Letters to the editor with pictures since 0202. Published on Big Pine Key’s garbage days, Tuesdays and Fridays.

[Kenny Lowe Leaving Winn Dixie] I was just informed that Friday will be the last day for Kenny Lowe Jr, manager of Winn Dixie. All of you remember how Kenny helped all the residents of BPK make it thru the aftermath of Hurricane Irma passing out free ice and water, keeping the store open, doing allow he could to help the residents who lost everything. He’s surely going to be missed. I’ve been shopping at the Winn Dixie/S. E. groceries for 32 years and have had to deal with schlock managers, but Kenny has been hands down the best manager ever and I doubt the replacement will be half as effective. Kenny was truly committed to his customers and Big Pine Key. I’m sure that I’ll be making the run to Publix in Marathon to buy name brand items that S. E. Groceries has decided to drop from their shelves in favor of the “store” brand which is advertised as “just as good” but it isn’t. Maybe now there will be a push to get a Publix on BPK just like they did in Islamorada. One can only hope.
[Cheers and Jeers] Jeers to the Key West Citizen for pricing their internet subscriptions the same as their home delivery service. It’s obvious that internet delivery is more eco-friendly and the costs are far less than those involved in home delivery (no printing costs, no wasting paper, and no delivery costs of a driver, vehicle, and gas). So why aren’t these cost savings passed along to the internet subscribing customer?

[Uber Back in KW] Uber, one of the nation’s largest ride-hailing companies, will start up again in Key West on July 1, two years after city police arrested a man for driving for the then-outlawed vehicle-for-hire outfit. State lawmakers did what Key West city commissioners wouldn’t do: Decide on ride-sharing and in the companies’ favor. The new law allowing ride-sharing companies to work freely in Florida takes effect July 1. Link

[Wounded Warrior Bicycle Ride] All are welcomed to greet our Wounded Warriors as they depart from their buses and prepare for their bicycle ride through the Keys on January 11th at 8AM, at the Upper Keys VFW Post 10211, located at Mile Marker 102 on the Oceanside.

These severely wounded combatants could use your uplifting thoughts and encouragement as they ready themselves for their ride. If your unable to say Hi to them at the VFW Post, perhaps you can keep abreast of their travels as they ride to Coral Shores High School and give them a wave as they pass by on US1.

We thank you for your willingness to enthusiastically support of this rehabilitative and therapeutic event.

[1517 Rome] The Popes had in the meanwhile become temporal rulers, with the lusts and pomps of other potentates, yet they claimed to carry with them the spiritual power as well. The revenues of the Church were swelled by the sale of “Indulgences” to remit Purgatory both for the living and the dead. The offices of bishop and cardinal were bought and sold, and the common people taxed to the limit of their credulity. These and other abuses in the organization of the Church were widely recognized and much resented, but as yet they went uncorrected.

[Shut Down] I think that if politicians shut down the government they should not be paid either. Let’s see how quickly they resolve issues then!
Deer Ed, I try not to miss a posting. You helped keep me in touch when I couldn’t come home for 7 months after Irma. Thank God for the Coconut Telegraph!

[Architecture] Ecuador (AP) — It’s a gravity-defying edifice that befits the lofty ambitions of what was supposed to be a symbol of South American unity. Set against an arid moonscape on the equatorial line, two cantilevered glass wings soar dramatically above a reflecting pool, symbolizing freedom and transparency and looking like something out of a science-fiction movie. It looks more like a stylized big gun emplacement. Link

[Gen Z] I just learned what Generation Z or Gen Z is. So I thought I as a fellow senior I thought I would share.  It also is known by a number of other names is the demographic cohort after the Millennials (Generation Y). There is no precise date for when Generation Z begins, but demographers and researchers typically use the mid-1990s to mid-2000s as starting birth years. There is little consensus regarding ending birth years. Most of Generation Z have used the Internet since a young age and are comfortable with technology and social media. Link

In 1996, Coach Scolinos was 78 years old and five years retired from a college coaching career that began in 1948. He shuffled to the stage to an impressive standing ovation, wearing dark polyester pants, a light blue shirt, and a string around his neck from which home plate hung — a full-sized, stark-white home plate.Seriously, I wondered, who in the hell is this guy? [Paris on Verge of Being Lost to Migrants] 99 vehicles were set on fire in Saint Denis, a suburb of Paris just six miles from the Eiffel Tower, which is home to more than 400,000 illegal immigrants. Out of the suburb’s 1.5-million population, 600,000 are Muslims from North Africa or sub-Saharan Africa and there are at least 160 mosques. France’s former Interior Minister, Gérard Collomb, warned that the country’s internal security is dire thanks to immigration. He said that, within five years, the situation could become irreversible.
