Letters to the editor with pictures since 2002. Published on Big Pine Key’s garbage days, Tuesdays and Fridays.

[Liveaboards Prohibited] I’m getting many different answers about waterfront lots that allow liveaboard boats on Big Pine. Some say there are a few sections that allow a liveaboard boat and then I hear from realtors who say there are no liveaboard boats allowed. Can anyone who may know for sure which is the case and offer advice? Big Pine for some reason has no marinas that folks can liveaboard. Thanks, silentfaith1@gmail.com

“Failure To Mask” FTM? Is that a new category like DUI for us to get arrested for?

The Coral City Camera is an underwater camera streaming live from an urban reef in Miami, Florida. It is located along the shoreline at the east end of Port Miami in about 10’ of water. It was deployed by Coral Morphologic as a hybrid art-science research project produced with Bridge Initiative and Bas Fisher Invitational and initially funded through grants awarded by a Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

[“Swastikas”] The black squares in the roadway on Cudjoe Key were put there by surveyors along with a white cross directly over a point of location for aerial surveys. Some fool thought it would be cool to turn the crosses into swastikas. As a former land surveyor, I’ve painted many black squares in the roads with a PK[?] nail as the location point.

I get those free packets of seeds from China, so I think to myself what could possibly go wrong?

California’s Apple Fire has grown to more than 20,000 acres. In a Sunday evening update, officials said there were 2,266 personnel, 29 hand-crews, 9 helicopters, 260 engines and 11 water tenders fighting the fire. Link

[Back To School] Are those calling for children to  go back to the Petri dish some call school, sending their children? Or are they going to wait until they see how this experiment turns out?

[Wanted to Rent] A young couple with 3 kids, a dog and cat looking for a 3/2 house to rent.  eped75@gmail.com or (352) 445-3723. Budget range: $3000.

[Forgotten Felines in Marathon has kittens”] Their online application only partly works. I wasn’t able to complete it. I didn’t try the phone number listed (1-800-728-3273)

[Bud n Breakfast Denver, Air BnB] Bring your dogs, cats and lots of cash for recreational dispensary hopping! The host leaves you a perfect bud and two of Willie’s Reserve pre-rolled! Comfy little joint by the HIGHway. We brought our own steaks and wine plus had Lou Malnatis pizzas delivered. Tried to find some good Keys seafood which delivers but it seemed nonexistent. Ounces are about $230 after tax and hash, ETC is available too. Read the online reviews and find dispensaries down Broadway which are cheaper. They social distance everyone, masks are required and be patient. Link

If I buy gold, do I actually get gold in my hand? Or is it just pretend gold, a paper representation of real gold.

[“Swastikas”] Am I the only one who knows what happened on Big Torch?! Years ago some morons thought it would be funny to put graffiti on the road out there, a bunch of obscene words and stuff, including those swastikas. The County came out later and covered up the graffiti with black paint (removing it off the road would’ve been a nightmare). Now, years later, the sun has faded the black paint and the graffiti is visible again. Enough with the dumb conspiracies. It was just dumb kids and our bright sun at work.

[Dead Man’s Fingers] I thought those pictures posted a while ago of the red cage fungus were creepy, but this one is nightmare material. A fungus called Dead Man’s Fingers. It typically grows in rotting wood but some species have been observed sprouting in the restrooms of Key West bars.

I found it both interesting and telling that the story about Hermin Cain dying of the dreaded corona virus failed to mention that he was losing his long time battle with stage 4 cancer at the time of his unfortunate demise.

Drunk me is a slob. Sober me is a slob, but without the slurring and stumbling.

[Free Seeds From China] They say the seeds are just common vegetable and flower seeds. They also say not to plant the seeds, just in case they are not.

[“Swastikas”] The Florida Keys have seen a surge in COVID-19 related deaths in the past week. The number of deaths from the virus now totals 11, with two more cases being reported on Sunday, according to the Florida Department of Health. Both of the individuals, a 76-year-old and a 72-year-old, had underlying health conditions, according to the Health Department. There were 1,379 cases total cases as of Monday, with 12,548 residents tested.

Keep looking, you’ll see it eventually.

The sod next to the bike path on South Pine Channel looks great and maybe means that the whole project is almost done. The asphalt patches on the bike path in front of the Post Office/BP Rooster and Coldwell Banker offices are most welcome too!

[More Cruise Ships] The stakes in the Key West harbor pilots’ lawsuit, which is attempting to remove three referenda from the Nov. 3 general election ballot that would limit large cruise ships, just got higher. The lawsuit, originally filed on behalf of the Key West Bar Pilots Association, a four-man group responsible for helping cruise ships safely enter and leave the local deep-water port, has been joined by Pier B Development Corp. Pier B Development is controlled by Ocean Properties, Ltd., one of the largest hotel and development companies in the United States. Ocean Properties owns Margaritaville Key West Resort & Marina and is controlled by the Walsh brothers; Mark, Michael, and William. Pier B is one of the three piers in Key West Harbor that allow cruise ship moorings. Pier B is the only privately-owned of the piers, which include the city-owned pier at Mallory Square and the U.S. Navy pier at the Outer Mole. Link
