drone sound of music[Privacy] Apparently thousands of people received drones for Christmas, meaning there will likely be a privacy-invading-high-definition camera flying over your property sooner than you think. If your first instinct is to shoot it down, that may not be legal, as some of the courts are saying that is no different than any other form of trespass. And if the offending drone is not threatening you or placing you in harm’s way, apparently you just have to allow it to photograph or video you in your backyard, or perhaps, right through your windows! Beware, those of you with outdoor showers or hot tubs!
And I thought getting rid of the damn turkey vultures on my roof was the worst I had to worry about.

Being politically correct used to be the same as being polite? Polite is being kind and respectful to others. It is based on the genuine desire to smooth relations with others, to treat them with respect, and to make them comfortable. People with class are always polite.
bounce26Whoever told me about placing a sheet of Bounce in my guitar cast to remove the stale odor is a wonderful person. It really worked. The stale smell really bothered me, but no longer. I even but a sheet in my car to remove that odor. that worked too.

[Cheap Non Tippers] To all those people who keep telling everyone why they are cheap non tippers — please keep it to yourselves. No matter how much you try and justify your cheapness it just won’t wash. Everyone else knows who you are and how cheap you are, but have a merry Christmas anyway with all the money you saved.
santa island palmYes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias.

There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus.

The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there.

Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart.

Only faith, poetry, love, romance can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

(Editor: “Is There a Santa Claus?” reprinted from the Sept. 21, 1897, edition of The New York Sun.)

[Grammar Police] Why do so many folks say, “I, personally …” If “I” isn’t personal what is? Its redundant.

It happened! I was visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of Bob Marley for being a Scrooge, but I didn’t expect him to bring along all of the Wailers. I found it difficult to sleep with all those ghosts in my bedroom playing reggae.

gibson26I bought a top of the line Gibson acoustic guitar with the Fishman Prefix Plus-T pre-amp. Every time I move the guitar the preamp rattles in it’s mounting because of its poor design and fit. Also the little wire holder inside the guitar came unglued from just in back of the sound hole. Now the wire ‘slaps’ when the guitar is moved. I’ve tried taping it but it comes undone. I’m often asked what that rattle is.I could have bought a high end Asian guitar and not have had that problem and saved big bucks. I didn’t expect that sort of poor quality from a Gibson — made in America guitar. I complained on their website, but never heard a peep from them; the Asians would have sent me a million emails asking what they could do to fix my problem.

What a pain. Even if they did have a fix. UPS would cost $90 and I’d be without a guitar for the time it would take for them to fix and return it. Boo Gibson. I wedged a piece of paper in the space and it works, but looks stupid on a $3000 guitar.

What separates a sea from an ocean is, literally, a fluid boundary: Geographers define a sea as a portion of an ocean that is partially enclosed by land, and they define the “entrance” to that sea as the imaginary line between the two closest points of land at the mouth. Some landlocked bodies of water are also called seas-think of the Dead Sea or the Caspian Sea-and not lakes because they’re composed of saltwater.

The next meeting of the Big Pine Computer Club is coming up this Saturday, December 27, 10 am at the senior center.  Hope to see you there. Merry Christmas! Events
Air travel used to be fun now it is a boring chore. If I can drive somewhere in Florida I will. I used to fly everywhere, but with the hour drive from Big Pine and the two hour security thing, I’d rather spend the time driving (plus I get to bring all my stuff with me). The only thing I miss is the actual flying and looking and wondering at the people in the terminals.

One of the great features of Firefox Hello is that you don’t need to create an account in order to connect with the people that matter to you most. You simply share a callback link with the person you want to connect with and when they click on the link the call begins. Chrome and Internet Explorer both support this new technology. This is going to be big once it’s out of beta testing.

ornament snowingWhat a wonderful Christmas. We had a magnificent feast with dear friends, great companionship, gift giving and getting, a fabulous dinner, and joy was upon the land. And one of my daughters and her family are enroute to spend some time with us.Our host, a retired NYC police officer said grace and asked the Lord to protect those who protect and serve us. That plea could not have come at a better time.

We seem to be careening into a time when law enforcement is presumed guilty of wrong doing whenever an officer finds it necessary to use lethal force in effecting the arrest of a minority.

Just the other day, near Furgeson Mo, in Berkerly, Mo, a white police officer shot and killed an armed robber, a young black man, who threatened him with a pistol. In this instance the event was captured by a surveillance camera, and there is no doubt as to the facts. In this instance, the majority of the officers of the PD are black as is the Chief. Nonetheless, riot and looting ensued.

In NYC, the Mayor remained silent about the assault on two police lieutenants who were trying to control a demonstration that sprang from the death of Eric Garner.

In NYC mobs chant that they want dead cops … now!

The NYC mayor tells the world that he has instructed his bi racial son to be “cautious” when encountering a police officer.

police protectIt is fascinating to observe that Obama’s knee jerk reaction to these events is to call for requiring police officers to wear body cameras. Actually there could be instances when that practice could be beneficial.

The much bigger issue is that Obama’s decision makes it clear that he does not trust the police. He does not respect them.   That message resonates throughout the black community. He and his make no suggestion to embark on an initiative to curb black crime. Nor does he suggest development and implementation of programs to ensure that all youths are taught self-respect and respect for the law. Instead, Obama’s reaction to any such incident to suggest guilt on the part of law enforcement.

Unless that changes, even more turbulent times lie ahead.
