What a great party at Big Pine Key park for 4th of July. It was a great time, the fireworks were fabulous, the weather cooperated, good music, etc. Is was a great day to celebrate. Congratulations to all who put in the hard work to make it such a great success. Thank you!

I noticed on the sheriffs website that many people arrested list their address as the Streets Of Key West. Is this a condo development?

[Benefit For Cynthia] today, Sunday from 1 – 6. Big time Splash party, come have lots of fun. Big Pine Moose lodge on Wilder road, just past Winn-Dixie. Lots of fun for the kids, waterslide, bounce house, Dunk tank, food, music and so much more, Got plenty of shade to sit back and listen to Ray West and his amazing musical friends. Come support Cynthia, Queen Mother #29 of Key West, she needs our support. See you there! Events
[End Cuba Embargo] Candidate for governor Charlie Crist went into the ‘lion’s den’ in Little Havana and called for the end to the Cuban embargo. Surprisingly, he got out alive! Even more surprising was the Cuban-Americans that cheered him. Strange things like that just don’t happen in Little Habana.

Democrat Hillary Clinton, who backed trade limits when she ran for president in 2008, is now calling for the embargo to be lifted. Her words mark the first time a leading presidential contender from either political party has suggested reversing the 52-year-old policy.

The embargo has failed because it has not toppled the Castro government but has hurt the Cuban people.

I moved to Monroe County in 1979 then the lower Keys in 1986. I came here to escape from the real world and worked from 1 to 3 jobs a day in order to stay. Staying in a place that has been paradise to me for almost 35 years, but now paradise is lost. I am just so tired of listening to people talking about bringing more people here. Well, they win. Now 30 years too late they want sewers. The near shore waters is a graveyard of coral. It makes me so sad when I jump in to do a little spear fishing. I moved here to get away from those of greed. They’re here and I must find somewhere new to run to.
no-take-zone
[No-Take Zones No-Working] The benefits from the 24 no-take reserves in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary haven’t trickled down from the fish to the coral reefs. That’s the finding of a study published online in April by the peer-reviewed journal Coral Reefs. “We can’t assume that addressing one problem, in this case fishing, will take care of other problems the ecosystem faces. For the corals themselves, the sort of action that needs to be taken is a combination of local and global changes.”
[Fox Blondes] I will take a little time to share with you some back ground of the blonds on FOX. Brenda Buttner graduated from Harvard University with honors with a bachelor’s degree in social studies. Buttner went on to be a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where she graduated with high honors and a bachelor’s degree in politics and economics. Shannon Bream is a graduate of Liberty University and earned a Juris Doctorate with honors from Florida State University College of Law. One of my favorites, Gretchen Carlson, graduated with honors from Stanford University and also studied at Oxford University in England. She is also a superb violinist. Jamie Colby, aside from her journalism career, Colby is an attorney and served in private practice for 10 years. She is an attorney admitted to practice in New York, California, the District of Columbia and Florida. Colby is also a former law professor, a member of Law Review and has been a National Board member of American Women in Radio and Television for the last several years. Attending the University of Miami International School of Business at age 14, she received a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting as well as her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Miami School of Law at age 22. Harris Faulkner, A graduate from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a degree in mass communication. Jennifer Griffin, A graduate of Harvard University in 1992, Griffin received a Bachelor’s degree in comparative politics. Kimberly Guilfoyle, Guilfoyle is a magna cum laude graduate of University of California , Davis and attended the University of San Francisco School of Law and Trinity College in Dublin , Ireland, where she studied and was published for her research in international children’s rights and European Economic Community law. Molly Henneberg, Henneberg earned her bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, graduating summa cum laude.

I could go on and on folks, why brother I’m thinking, your mind seems to be made up that blonds are dumb and FOX is bad. You’re just plain wrong. Bottom line: The next time you hear someone criticizing FOX News for supposedly having a “bunch of dumb gals” doing the news, etc. that are only on the tube to serve as eye candy.

[“Miami driver tailgating”] I am a poster that treated you harshly based on your post; that implied you were driving 55 in a 55 and someone was tailing you too closely. Your clarification makes all the difference in the world; you were in a 45 zone and doing 55 and a driver was still all up on you and that bothered you. This is perfectly justified and warranted. I hate those Miami drivers too. Please accept my apology. You are decent Keys folk.

[Life Worthless] I was just sitting here reading the news — more killings. A fool, I think, would blame guns, but something occurred to me some time ago. What it seems to me is happening is that there has simply occurred a very basic reevaluation of the worth of life. That I firmly believe comes from houses or homes. Video games, movies, rap music, church being uncool (I always thought it was). ‘Niggas’ are now cool, disrespect shown to everyone is cool, boastful ignorance of the world they live in is cool. Maybe its the fault of what one may see in the mirror. I just think it horrorably sad that young or old think so little of themselves and thus others, that “kill ’em all, it don’t matter.” Perhaps we can change it. But I don’t know how. Do you?

[Procrastinate] The Keys have had 30 years of dithering about building the State mandated central sewer system.  How did it come to be so mucked up after all of that available  time to plan for it?  Will the Keys ever have a BOCC with  5 competent and focused members all at one time, or is that too much to wish for?

diver6
[“Why do divers openly invade my fishing space”] This one is almost too hard to address because it appears the writer seems to think he has a deed to a particular spot in the ocean. How do I get past that thinking? Respecting the diver down flag is a safety issue not a territorial issue.

[“Mangrove Mama’s”] After all the complaints, we went there on Thursday night and had a great time. The place was packed and the music was very good (amazing what 1 guy and a guitar will do). The service was quick (we feared worse with all the people) and the food was good (I couldn’t finish, so tomorrow I’ll have a chicken parm sandwich for lunch). The people at the table next to ours even commented how they always drive by and couldn’t believe what they were missing. It’s not going to get 5 stars from Fodors, but it is what it is and we like it along with many, many others.

hogfish6
[Hogfish] I have been wondering about all the hogfish being touted by the local restaurants. If I am not mistaken, hogfish are usually not netted or taken by hook and line; they have to be speared. Are there all kinds of commercial divers out there harvesting these fish, or could the restaurants be substituting Tilapia? They are both white, mild fish and difficult to tell apart by taste. When is the last time you have been diving and seen an abundance of hogfish? Methinks something is rotten in paradise. And one more thing to consider, Tilapia are farm raised and eat poop
[“Mangrove Mama’s”] Restaurants seem to peak in popularity, change owners, rise or fall, change owners, etc. Mama’s Is good example. A decade ago it was our “Cheers” in the lower Keys. We came for the camaraderie of our friends. We came to laugh with the bartenders. We came because the owners cared for the locals. The owners threw a locals’ party every year that couldn’t be beat. After Wilma we pitched in to get the ‘old gal’ up and running. Tourists returned every year, not necessarily for the food, but to hang with the locals. If you were part of it, you were aware that you were part of something magical. Things change. Watch this video to get a taste of the past and listen to Howard Livingston as he rooted down here. (to the critic who compared the Grouper to Mamas, you will never get it). Video
bluewater-750w
[Rude Divers] A few weekends ago a boat repeatedly passed between me and another anchored boat fishing for yellow tail.  We (anchored) were not much more than 20-30 yards apart.  The boat would drop off it’s “free divers” up current, then pass between us to retrieve the divers after they had drifted past our chum line and since I’m suppose to maintain a safe distance from them, I feel they should be doing the same.  Since this isn’t the first time this has happened, I was wondering where to report the unsafe activity. They passed so close, getting their boat numbers would have been no problem.  I thought readers might have some input

The price of drinks and food in the Keys is getting carried away by greedy entrepreneurs everywhere. $5, 6, 8, 10 dollars or more for a shot of booze in a glass full of ice with a touch of mixer, is out-right theft. $15 for a stinking cheeseburger? A dinner for a family of four is $100 at a low rent beanery today. Enough is enough. These business owners should take a look at what they really are. Unimportant utilities supplying some sort of goods and services that people have no true need for. To dine out is not important. Buying food for cooking at home is! If the supermarkets start ripping off people like the restaurant and bar trades do, there will be hell to pay. It will be a cold day in Miami when my family and I go out again at these prices.

an_earth-meteor
We are living in a time of huge world wide human migrations.  People are seeking safety, food, shelter and a future.  Unfortunately the places they are migrating to are already overcrowded with not nearly enough jobs to go around for the people there now, many of whom have been displaced by ever growing technology.  There are just way too many longer living people now,  with more on the way.  There doesn’t look to be any way for man himself to end the current trend.  Maybe a collision with a big asteroid would re-balance things.
[Mangrove Mama’s] To all the folks complaining about Mangrove Mama’s food, it is just a mater of time before the owner sells out or completely goes out of business. It is the nature of restaurant owners who seek profit over quality. We see it all the time and then we see restaurants that thrive year after year, that sell good food, good service and a clean environment. Don’t worry they will be gone soon.

[Gay Discrimination] I remember watching “The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly” with my father when I was about 11 or 12. I also remember asking my father, “Was it really like that back then Dad?” I can’t help but think somewhere, some kid is watching “Glee” with both his fathers and will ask, “Dads, can I be a dancer when I grow up?”
Adam Carolla hit the nail on the head when he titled his book “In 50 Years We’ll All Be Chicks”. Will there ever be another paper printed that dose not have mention of gays and their issues? Truly I have not one issue with gay people, but I am damn sick of having to hear about all of theirs. Just go and be gay for gay sake and shut up please. There are a lot of people I would rather not be around then gay people. Gay people I find to be polite, happy, very funny and I generally like them. Get to know a gay person and I think you’ll agree. Some people, on the other hand, are simply rude, obnoxious jerks

Firefox has the worst bookmark options of all browsers. It is complicated to use; not at all intuitive. Editing a bookmark is not among the right-click options. That is just one of the problems. They recently updated the bookmark section, but only made it more convoluted to use.

Can anyone in the Keys receive T.V. without cable? In the old days we voted to put in translator towers. The towers are still there, but I can’t find a signal. I don’t remember voting to give up what we paid for. I am sick of paying $162 per month to watch the same channels I used to watch for free. I am paying more for cable TV than for electric and water combined. There has to be a way to get channels 4- 7- and 10 without being robbed. Any help would be appreciated.

Deer Friends: sorry I missed Friday, but I simply forgot to send the following postings that I had written for Friday. (Ed: Don’t feel bad, FTR, I forgot to publish one day last week.)

colored only6Part 1) Fifty years ago, on July 2nd, 1964, former President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. Amazingly most Democrat legislators fiercely resisted passage of the law. They even filibustered against it. Nonetheless it was passed with overwhelming Republican support. The act set about to establish “equality” and ended Jim Crow laws for all Americans.

The law has done much good, but much remains to be accomplished.

On the surface, the Civil Rights Act has certainly transformed American life. We have a Black President. Blacks and Whites are more integrated in work and education than ever before. Blacks vote in larger numbers and hold more political offices than ever before. Blacks hold prominent positions in and are spokespersons for both parties. They hold private and public sector jobs that once were solely the domain for Whites. They hold public office in ever growing numbers.

But these successes seem superficial compared to the deep and abiding problems that still afflict the American of African ancestry community. Poverty lingers for generation after generation, it has become an epidemic. It is visible in small pockets in some communities and is as vast as the City of Detroit. Black on Black crime is the scourge of many communities. Blacks are arrested and convicted, and jailed in vastly disproportionate rates to Whites. The unemployment rate of Whites dwarfs that of Blacks. About 72% of Black babies are born out of wedlock. Those children, absent a solid family experience, are much more likely to face poverty and welfare dependence.

In the coming days, there will be much flag-waving and fireworks, much talk of faith and freedom, pride and patriotism. But if this country was conceived in liberty, it was also conceived in slavery. To ignore that fact is not only dishonest, it robs us of the opportunity to heal this country, to make it whole. Our society has a fundamental duty to reform the laws that have created and perpetuated an underclass. The 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act is a good time to think about that. So is the Fourth of July.

vot for mePart 2) RECENTLY A POSTER WROTE: “Since FTR pays for space he must put the standard public disclaimer at the bottom of his diatribe anytime he talks about a specific candidate. He must also report these contributions to the candidate for financial disclosure. If he declines it behooves Deer Ed to do it for him. Goodman can be removed from the ballot and both Deer Ed and FTR fined for campaign violations. Just a friendly reminder.”

FTR’S RESPONSE: I believe that the poster is the publisher of a free Big Pine weekly publication that is primarily devoted to advertising and self-described “drivel.” I have great admiration and respect for the publisher’s humanity and commitment to community service, but our political philosophies are poles apart. Some might believe that his posting was less than “friendly” concern. But I take it at face value. It would be possible to conclude that his labeling my postings as being “diatribes” is less than “friendly”. But I consider it flattering that the poster takes the time to read my “diatribes.” I invite him to favor the CT by posting his criticisms of my postings. That’s a “friendly” invitation.

The poster is wrong, flat wrong about the campaign law. What follows is the apropos section of the Florida State Statutes:

Florida Statutes 106.143 – Political advertisements circulated prior to election; requirements:

(10) This section does not apply to any campaign message or political  advertisement used by a candidate and the candidate’s supporters or by a political committee if the message or advertisement is:

Placed at no cost on an Internet website for which there is no cost to post content for public users. (d)

The statute is crystal clear and precisely on point.

The Coconut Telegraph is a free public website, no one is charged to post. I am not charged to post. Our Deer Ed does charge for advertising. The FTR logo is advertising. I pay to advertise because I hope that it will draw more readers to my postings and to support the CT. I’ve been posting here for years, long before I decided to advertise with my logo. The FTR logo does not promote nor even mention any candidate. My postings will continue to express my opinions concerning political candidates.
