[Famous Person Coming to Big Pine
] Tim Dorsey to speak at the Big Pine Key Library] Bottom feeders beware: the Sunshine State’s favorite psychotic killer and lovable Floridaphile Serge Storms has found a new calling, legal eagle, and he’s going to make a killing as a crusading attorney—and star as a dashing lawyer on the big screen—in this madcap escapade from the insanely funny New York Times bestselling author Tim Dorsey.

Author Tim Dorsey will be at the Big Pine Key Library to promote his new novel, meet admirers and sign copies of his books on October 28th, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. Tim Dorsey was a reporter and editor for the Tampa Tribune from 1987 to 1999, and is the author of seventeen novels. [Rain] Not only do we now have a 70% chance of a Gulf storm this week (can you say ‘Hanna’), but the models are forecasting a potentially nasty storm for Halloween too.
[Malfeasance] Is it coincidental that the major big ticket equipment in the Cudjoe Regional sewer system in all collection, transmission, and treatment contracts was sole sourced to the supply subsidiaries of big US military contractors? The sole sourcing is a clear violation of State and Federal government purchasing laws. Here is a direct quote from one of the contracts: “Acceptable manufacturer of this type of pump is Wilo-EMU; no other manufacturers will be accepted.”

Wilo is a European manufacturer. A consulting engineer for FKAA prepared a formal comparison that found that it would cost $9,000 more to buy 2 European Wilos than to buy 2 US made Hidrostal pumps and it would take an extra 20 horsepower each to do the same job due to low efficiency of the European pumps. At current electric prices, it will cost an extra $238,520 over 20 years to use the pumps that were sole-sourced, not counting the electrical supply, VFDs and back-up generator, nor the shorter life of Wilo impellers compared to the stainless steel impeller of the Hidrostal. So you see, it’s not just about saving money after all, is it?

Be aware that the higher operating cost of imported pumps is charged to your sewer bill. That does not come from the infrastructure sales tax. Next, maybe FKAA will start sole-sourcing Audi staff cars instead of buying Fords or Chevys at discounted State Contract prices?

[“The way we were”] Vic Latham threw me out of his Full Moon Saloon! I saw Jimmy Buffett play at the Mermaid Lounge, Captain Hornblower’s jazz club and The Monster were hot spots on White Street. You could come by boat at Peg Legs on BPK. B.O.’s Fishwagon was a street cart on Duval St.  The conch salad man and the cookie lady at Mallory Square before the cruise ships and current circus were thought of. Dang, I miss Barbara at Turtle Kralls and Greek at the Half Shell, my drinks were always right and I was always remembered. Keys locals, not all gone; all but forgotten now.
Key West restaurants were a lot better when 3 main players didn’t own the Bight (now called the Historical Seaport) and half of Duval.

picadillo22I’ve been trying Picadillo recipes for many years and I finally found one that tastes just like El Sibony’s, my standard for all Cuban food.

Picadillo
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 medium-size yellow onions, peeled and chopped
2 ounces dried chorizo, diced
4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
1 1/2 pounds ground beef or turkey
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
4 ripe tomatoes, chopped, or one 28-ounce can whole tomatoes, drained and crushed
2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 bay leaves
Pinch of ground cloves
Pinch of nutmeg
2/3 cup raisins
2/3 cup pitted, stuffed olives

Put the olive oil in a large, heavy pan set over a medium-high flame, and heat until it begins to shimmer.
Add onions, chorizo and garlic, stir to combine and cook until the onions have started to soften, approximately 10 minutes.
Add the ground beef, and allow it to brown, crumbling the meat with a fork as it does. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
Add tomatoes, vinegar, cinnamon, cumin, bay leaves, cloves and nutmeg and stir to combine. Lower the heat, and let the stew simmer, covered, for approximately 30 minutes.
Uncover the pan, and add the raisins and the olives. Allow the stew to cook for another 15 minutes or so, then serve, accompanied by white rice.

Yield: 6 servings. Full Menu > Recipes

[Sewers] I received the following email correcting the Citizen article about the deep well needed at the Cudjoe poop plant: Here are the facts:
Dear Neighbors: You may have seen various newspaper articles indicating that a settlement about the deep well litigation is close to being reached, allowing the shallow wells to be used for sewage effluent until levels of nitrogen and other contaminants are detectable in monitoring wells being built by FKAA. This is totally inaccurate. Almost as inaccurate as monitoring wells. Almost as inaccurate as the newspaper articles. The articles make it seem that the deep well will be drilled, but what DigDeepCudjoe proposed and FKAA took to the BOCC was for a 5 year study that might or might NOT result in a deep well. Other environmentalists I have spoken with about DigDeep’s proposal have called it ‘the Cave in at Dig Deep’ and a total farce scientifically.
DigDeep’s proposal has NOT been approved by the petitioners in the litigation. There is NO agreement.
The so called agreement was the result of a private meeting between Jan Edelstein, for DigDeepCudjoe, and Kirk Zuelch for FKAA which was not authorized by petitioners or their attorneys; We didn’t even know about the so-called settlement until after it was already being touted by Kirk Zuelch to the media and the BOCC.
Rest assured, there is no such agreement. DigDeep doesn’t speak for any of the petitioners or for their counsel. It is not a party to the litigation. I’m sure their intentions were good. I don’t know why they did this, but petitioners’ counsel were not involved and there is no agreement.
We continue to prepare for the hearing. We will attend the formal settlement meeting on November 7 between the parties to the litigation and will do our best to reach an agreement on behalf of all petitioners that gets us the deep well as soon as possible. For those of you who haven’t yet sent in your petitions supporting the deep well, we need them now more than ever. Any questions, please let me know. Thanks. Caron Balkany
frankenstein electric charge[Franken-skeeter] Captain Lynda Schuh, Independent, has my vote for Mosquito Control. Partly because she has no political party influencing her decisions, but mainly because she is the only candidate that does not think that releasing swarms of genetically modified Franken-skeeters amongst us is a wonderful idea.
Even if introducing a new transgenic life form into a fragile environment was somewhat sensible instead of totally idiotic, think about this: After releasing a couple million dollars worth of GMO mosquitoes, do you suppose Mosquito Control will bust their butts trying to kill them? Or will they back off on eradication while they let the skeeters breed to produce even more? Remember that the lady skeeters will be looking for a blood meal from you when breeding. What happens to natural predators like dragonflies that eat GMO Franken-skeeters? Are you aware that a single serving of GMO soy or corn can produce mutant bacteria in your gut and can actually be incorporated into your own DNA? You are what you eat, so eat carefully. And please vote for common sense Lynda for Mosquito Control.
By the way, did you notice that during the time that Mosquito Control was banned from spraying Big Pine that there were scads of dragonflies, but damn few skeeters? I never had a year here with fewer bites. Methods could improve. Maybe buy normal dragonflies instead of mutant skeeters and more toxic poisons?
Uh-oh, I don’t think hurricane season will go out with a whimper! There’s a disturbance in the Gulf that could be a depression by Wednesday, and forecasts for a potential storm next week too. This rain sucks, but a storm would be a real bummer.

solar-flare22[Extreme Ultraviolet Image of a Significant Solar Flare] The sun emitted a significant solar flare on Oct. 19, 2014, peaking at 1:01 a.m. EDT. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which is always observing the sun, captured this image of the event in extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 131 Angstroms – a wavelength that can see the intense heat of a flare and that is typically colorized in teal. This flare is classified as an X1.1-class flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 flare is twice as intense as an X1, and an X3 is three times as intense. .

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth’s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however — when intense enough — they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.

[Change] Many of you blame new people for changing the Keys, but it is the old families who have done most of the changing. The new ones are just more noticeable. Yes there are many new developers, but if you’ll look closely you see old Keys’ family names among their investors and directors.

[“The way we were”] Remember Cow Key Marina. It was a bar falling in the ocean. The owner was so cool. I brought my ex-wife there. She orders a Chablis. He say what? She says a white wine. He says oh no honey all we got here are beer and sodies. I talked to him a lot. That place was a happening when the navy hospital was up and running. He had black and white pictures of movie stars all over the walls. He started getting old so he hired some help. She was a hot big breasted girl. He had a heart attack within two weeks. She had to go. The pool table was fun. All the balls rolled to the same side.
Remember when there were markers going through the back country all the way to Key West. The inside passage was just too cool. They got rid of the marker so people wouldn’t run aground. That was smart. Now everyone runs aground back there.
why22Why do men’s clothes have buttons on the right while women’s clothes have buttons on the left? Because when buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left.  Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s right.   And that’s where women’s buttons have remained since.

-Why do ships and aircraft use ‘mayday’ as their call for help? Because this comes from the French word m’aidez – meaning ‘help me’ – and is pronounced, approximately, ‘mayday.’
-Why are zero scores in tennis called ‘love’? Because in  France, where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called ‘l’oeuf,’ which is French for ‘the egg.’  When tennis was introduced in the  US , Americans (naturally), mispronounced it ‘love.’
-Why do x’s at the end of a letter signify kisses? Because in the middle ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an x. Kissing the x represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The x and the kiss eventually became synonymous.
-Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called ‘passing the buck’? Because in card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal.  If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would  ‘pass the buck’ to the next player.

-Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast? Because in earlier times it used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink.  To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host.  Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host’s glass with his own.

-Why are people in the public eye said to be ‘in the limelight’? Because, invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer ‘in the limelight’ was the centre of attention.

-Why is someone who is feeling great ‘on cloud nine’? Because types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

-Why in golf, where did the term ‘caddie’ come from? Because when Mary Queen of Scots Went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game ‘golf.’ He had the first course outside of  Scotland built for her enjoyment.  To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her.  Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced ‘ca-day’ and the Scots changed it into caddie.
-Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs? Because long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called ‘pygg’. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as ‘pygg banks.’  When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig.  And it caught on

[“The way we were”] Long long ago (1980) in a place far far away (Long Key) going to the grocery store was an adventure. We had two choices – the Trading Post in Islamorada or Winn Dixie in Marathon (where Beals is today). To go to the Trading Post after dark meant traveling on the old skinny bridges (white knuckles) and running from your vehicle into the store from the parking lot to avoid the clouds of mosquitoes. After buying groceries and loading them, you would hurry back on the road and roll down all your windows to blow out all the mosquitoes that had gotten in. Going to the Winn in Marathon was almost as much fun, I was going there with a friend and asked him, “What are all those round rubber things that are always on the road on the Long Key Bridge?” He told me that they were the rubber gaskets from the side mirrors when two vehicles passed too close together. Oh, the good ole days–not.

heliocopter apacheBig, unmarked gray helicopters are real! I was not joking. I trimmed the mangroves a bit too aggressively and here they came. I was confronted by the FDEP doing the Army Corps of Engineers’ bidding. I was presented with the high resolution pictures of my private property and blah blah, but, I won’t go into the hell that ensued. The point I am making is that now the helicopters are tormenting me. They are real. Spying on me. And I am not crazy. Freaked out, yes. Thump, thump, thump. Out comes my middle finger. And a moon.

[Sewers] In an attempt to avoid litigation over not having the legally required deep disposal wells at the Cudjoe wastewater facility, FKAA made a wordy offer to Dig Deep Cudjoe. I have seen the offer and it is a shameful farce. FKAA is being run like Monsanto, not a public service entity. It is time to purge their management in favor of some honesty, transparency, and civic responsibility. Too bad our referendum in favor of an elected FKAA board of directors was ignored and too bad the governor is such a useless turd that he will not even enforce the laws of Florida. Vote for anyone but him.

packers_truck16k[“Montego Bay”]  Without question the best bar on Big Pine was Montego Bay.  Formerly the Pelican Post and many years before that the home of the Big Pine Glass Factory.  Mo Bay was a gathering place for everyone from the economically challenged to the local movers and shakers of the community.  The food was good, (The Pelican Post fish sandwich was the best in the Keys and the Hot and Crabby dip was a  perfect afternoon nosh with a favorite libation).  The drinks were generous and the atmosphere was just right for us folks on Big Pine.  Those of us who were regulars actually had our brass name tags at our seats at “Pirate’s Corner” at the bar where we spent many afternoons playing dice games like Ship, Captain and Crew and the infamous 7-14-21 drinking game that could leave you face down if you were a big loser.  They had good entertainment on weekends and were host to the Southernmost Packer Backer Bar where the local Green Bay Packer fans would show up in full Packer regalia for every televised game. (Locals will remember the green and gold Packer truck parked in front that latter got moved to Captain Dan’s).  The various characters who came through the door were each unique in their own way and a book could be written on the shenanigans that went on from time to time.  As with many one-of-a-kind places there will never be another Mo Bay.  Those of us who enjoyed the hospitality of our favorite watering hole for many years we can only say, “We miss you. Thanks for the memories.”

[“The way we were”] So it looks like the specific reasons why people miss the way things used to be are:
1.Favorite bars have gone out of business
2.Favorite restaurants have gone out of business
3.Favorite liquor stores have gone out of business
4.There was less traffic
Okay that can be said about every single small town in the USA. Anything more profound to say? Was there mosquito control? Was there the same problem with the homeless back then? How about the cops? Better or worse then? Assuming there weren’t as many, did less tourist/snowbird money impact the economy?
I’m not being sarcastic. I like it here now, the way it is. I like Springer’s, Coconuts, the Tiki Bar, Mango Mamas, Boondocks (Monday night open mike!), the Hurricane and Porky’s in Marathon. Was the Winn Dixie plaza built then? Look, the plaza is kind of dumpy, but I’d hate to have to drive to Marathon for groceries. What about FKAA water? Were all the houses ground level?

[“7 Mile Bridge money”] Is it $77,000,000 that they are going to drop on the old 7 Mile Bridge. I wonder why it was not discussed to just re-deck say, a 1/8 or a 1/4 mile of the east end. Man, the way things are you would think the powers that be would have had a plan B don’t you? What an eye sore that project will create. I’ve heard they say it will only take them 18 months to do it. Dream on. And that $77,000,000? I’ll go with $85-90 with the estimated 18 months taking 22.

weirdbuilding[“Some architects should be shot”] Architects don’t build things, they design concepts. If someone wants an architectural concept built, those plans go to a licensed structural engineer who calculates all the scientific loading stuff and in turn tweaks the architect’s concept and produces site-specific detailed building plans. Once the licensed engineer’s plans have been submitted to and approved by the local building authority, a licensed contractor can proceed to build the engineered structure. But at the same time, the project needs to meet local zoning regulations, or the owner can apply for a variance. Or a change in the whole area’s use zoning. The construction process includes many mandatory inspections by the local authority to ensure that the contractor is adhering to both the engineer’s specifications as well as local building codes.

It isn’t the architect you want to shoot. Nor is it the engineer or the contractor’s masons and carpenters. Go back to your city’s planning board and present your issue with them. If they agree with you, you win and the round building in a neighborhood of squares won’t get built. If the majority votes against your proposal to ban round in squares, you lose. Suicide is your only option. Majority wins, just the same as the rest of our country works.

[“The Way We Were”] We visited Key Lime Resort in Marathon for two weeks every year from the late sixties until we were lucky enough to move here in the mid 80’s. Key Lime was a time share for tourists, but it was great and the locals always treated us well. Change for the worse started when the new bridges were completed. El Siboney was located at Duval and United in those days and they were open for breakfast back then. Great memories. We would go to Turtle Crawls after work and drink beers from around the world to earn a t-shirt with flags from each country. You could park right in front of the place for free at 4 or 5 in the afternoon. The big metal building in Bay Point was a restaurant. No AC, cats visiting with the patrons and the best tasting freshest fish and friendliest service you can imagine. The swimming holes on Boca Chica Road were great before the Navy fenced them off. The Blue Hole was crystal clear. It had normal looking fresh water fish and two big gators. Actually one big gator and one giant. Some friends of mine who grew up here said they used to swim in the Blue Hole when they were young. I asked about the gators and they said one of them would watch the gators while the others swam.

Looking at page one of the arrest log this evening, I think too many arrestees work as servers.  Being a former server who worked at the Islamorada Fish Company and Little Italy in Layton, I would want those arrestees to announce which damn restaurant is stupid enough to hire them because I don’t want those skeeve buckets to serve me my hogfish sandwich. [“The Way We Were”] Walking from White Street to Duval I remember visiting so many friends on their porch and at Mom and Pop stores and drinking a paper medicine cup of Cuban coffee called a “buchi” at each place so that you would be flying like a kite by noon.

I worked at Boca Chica Bar for my Dad in the early 70s on the weekend, 11PM to 7AM. Hardly anybody played golf at the course so it was a great place to have a picnic. Those days everybody knew everybody. Great fun. During the week I worked at FKAA so I will stop here.

[“The Way We Were”] Nobody mentioned Logan’s Lobster House and Fay Logan’s foul mouth or La Bodega sandwich shop with their outrageous sandwiches. Or the multi purpose (cocaine) Five Star Sandwich Shop on Packer and Virginia Streets. One stop shopping at its finest. The Deja vu motel at Atlantic Shores. Yep, Key West used to be cool and quirky now it’s just Disneyland South with crappy attractions.

I ran against George Neugent in 2006 and in 2010. George now is running for his 5th consecutive 4-year term, after claiming during the 2010 campaign that, win or lose, it was the last time he would run. George’s campaign slogan that year was: PROMISES MADE, PROMISES KEPT

tug tillyI am not against the county providing pump out services for liveaboard boats; in fact, I believe that is necessary, but liveaboards should pay for pumping out, just like all Keys property owners pay for sewerage collection and treatment. As for Tugboat Tilly, I personally saw the email sent by Naja and Arnaud Girard, who co-publish Key West the Newspaper, to all the county commissioners, warning them the Tilly was going to sink in the channel if it was not towed to port. And I read the email George Neugent fired back, beating up on the Girards for bothering him and the county commissioners with the Tilly, which soon did sink in the channel.

I pulled this from the Monroe County Supervisor of Election’s website:
Active Registered Voters – 10/13/2014

from the right
A poster criticized Governor Scott for not being at the podium at the instant the recent debate was scheduled to start. There was an excellent reason for Scott’s absence.

rules22Crist had violated, broken the rules, of the debate. Rules that he had personally signed off on. The rules specifically forbad any fans in the podiums. Those rules had been negotiated many weeks prior to the debate. Charlie agreed to the rules, and signed them. On the evening of the debate, Crist demanded that a fan be put in place, he refused to participate if there was no fan. One can only guess why he is so obsessed with a fan.

Scott’s team said no, rules are rules. Both Scott and Crist were on the premises. Scott had been told that Crist was refusing to go on stage without his security blankey, a fan. Scott waited for a resolution to the problem, he believed that Crist was hiding off stage refusing to go to the podium.

Just before “show time” a Crist team member went on stage, and put the fan in place, clearly another example of Crist’s disdain for rules and the truth. Shortly thereafter Crist came on stage. The stage temperature was 67’.

Because of the dust up that Crist had created, Scott was unaware that Crist had taken the stage, it took several minutes to clear up the confusion that Crist had caused. Scott was not told that Crist was on stage for several minutes after Crist took the stage. Crist managed, by breaking the rules, to pull off an example of Democrat political theater, another dirty trick.

Remember that Crist had stated that he would not appear unless he had his security blankey, a fan. Even the moderator criticized Crist for breaking the rules. But Crist breaking rules and promises is no surprise.

The poster also wrote of Crist’s support of a huge hike in the minimum wage. That is yet another of Crist’s loving embraces of Obama’s reckless fiscal policies. Only 4.3% Americans make the minimum wage, most are youths just entering the labor arena. There are very few families who live on the minimum wage. It is a gateway wage usually earned by people with little skill and little experience in the work force. It is the first rung in a ladder of increasing wages. There is no way to know how many persons choose to stay on the minimum wage, supplementing their income by food stamps and other government largess. The Congressional Budget office has reported that imposition of a higher minimum wage will kill half a million jobs. That would be a huge setback for our terribly meager recovery, the longest and weakest in our nation’s history. Please recall that the recession ended just 6 months after Obama took office. We still are suffering the effects of Obamnomics and Democrat control of our economy.

Part 2) The same poster discussed above, also wrote: “But wait, he (FTR) has moved on now claiming (with absolutely no proof) that certain childhood diseases have been caused by immigration policies.”

fever kid temp nurseFTR’S RESPONSE: The surge in EV D-68 in the U.S. became evident in mid-September when the CDC first reported it had reached epidemic levels in six U.S. states: Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky and Missouri. There is a serious outbreak affecting our children across all but 4 states and on an epidemic scale in at least 7 states. Infected children are suffering from polio like symptoms and children are dying. The surge in the disease coincides with the surge of illegal immigrant children from Central America. It must be remembered that the administration dispersed the illegal immigrant children all over our nation.

The virus, EV D-68 is common in Central America. It is nearly certain that the Central American children have built up immunity to it, our children do not have such immunity. Link

Part 3) Once again, Roger Cousineau, candidate for FKMCD board has chosen to address the CT community. I’m sure that we all take comfort in his statement that: “I know the earth is round (No Zombie Mosquitoes!)”. Certainly Mr. C. was making an attempt at humor. But, this race is much too important for silly jokes. His comment reinforces my belief that his mind set is frivolity. I urge each of you to look again at the photo he submitted yesterday. The job of FKMCD commissioner is serious business, not a Zombie bike ride replete with cutesy caricatures of mosquitoes, and a goofy cap. Mosquitoes can be deadly, they are not cute, not funny.

The balance of his posting is the functional equivalent of Moms apple pie. It is all sweetness and light.

But he does not tell you that he supports increasing FKMCD spending and raising your taxes. He does not tell you that he supports the frivolous idea of wasting tax dollars by spending long tons of money to house fiscal staff in a special facility nearly 50 miles away from the Administrative office of FKMCD. He does not tell us why he contemplates increasing the size of FKMCD when we now and always will have just 137.3 sq. miles of land to service.

And we must wonder why Mr. C. has hidden from us his experience in management, budgets, and personnel matters.

Mr. C. presents as a silly man with silly ideas. Mosquito control is a deadly serious task, it requires competency, dedication, and vision.

If you want serious, qualified, and dedicated oversight of the FKMCD, please vote for Phil Goodman. We need him.
