turbididyKudos to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for cutting 50 -ft. openings along 2 miles of fence erected by contractors to control turbidity — as mandated by law — during sewer construction on Long Beach Road. Entrapment of deer absolutely needed to be prevented, but not in a haphazard way that created gaps that allow runoff from road fill into the water, especially after the recent heavy rains.Only a relatively short turbidity fence along the active work area is needed, not miles of fencing. As the trench work is done and the road power cleaned (as is done now), the lightweight fence — or better yet, basal turbidity “snakes” — should be moved progressively down the road. This is a far better solution that not only precludes deer entrapment but protects mangroves and water from runoff from fill — as mandated by state law. The contractor had already removing the fence on areas where the work had been completed — the easily corrected mistake was putting out 2 miles of fence when only a short section was needed.

It’s been many years since the deer fence and overpasses on the east end of Big Pine were completed. When will we know why the night speed limit is still 30mph instead of 45mph? People have been asking for years and have never gotten a satisfactory answer. People have been asking why the fence was built if Key deer are still using that portion of US1 causing the speed limit to remain at 30mph at night. If it doesn’t work, admit it and, “Mr Refuge, tear down that fence!”
[Wasps] Our stilt home is being riddled with wasp nests underneath. They love to nest in between the floor trusses. Does anyone know of a product we can apply to the wood to deter them? We’re tired of spraying the nest and have a new one pop up the next day somewhere else. I noticed this past year when they stopped spraying for mosquitoes, the nests really started multiplying.

[Today is Lobster Season] There’s a restaurant around here that specializes in Maine lobster, duh! Didn’t they notice tourists come to the Keys for our fine lobster? I agree that Maine lobster is better, but the tourists want local products.

[Letter from Cuba] I got this email from a friend who teaches Computer Science at the University on an old iPhone a sympathetic tourist gave him. It’s hard to understand because he doesn’t speak English very well.

“Hello how is everything, we hope that all it good, especially yours and your immediate family health. Maru was last week working in Havana and I am at home making a table for laptops, internal divisions of a closet, y hooks for hanging clothes. All to better organize the house and Maru is happier. These days I have not had work tour guide and as a freelancer I’ve only worked at home and a hostel (Casa Mario y Damaris) where I do promotional work online. Over here they are making unbearable heat, ideal for being at home, in the shower all day. In Cuba everything stays the same, the worst is that there is no hope of real change that will help change the landscape. More and more restrictions and changes do not appear to help professionals like me to find a safe y working according to what one has studied . Maru and I are considering the possibility of eventually trying to leave Cuba, but still this idea is a project unrealizable by the associated costs and the inability to do together at the same time.

I’m not working on cubahostales.com because it did not benefit as competition entered the large foreign companies y others with more budget and technical possibilities, in addition to it all the US Treasury Department got caught blocking our site for a full month in high season booking. All the work of a year lost.
So things are going around here, hugs and take care.”

[KW Mayor] Without Sloan Bashinsky in the debate a lot of issues wouldn’t have been discussed like homelessness for example and Eimers’ death.

[Lobsters] Removing casitas from the ocean floor is going on by the Fish and wildlife people in earnest. I heard that there is a measure right now to legalize casitas. Go to jail one day for something and the next day it’s legal?

Who cares where Sloan’s guidance comes from. As long as his guidance is good for Key West he should be mayor! He is not crazy to think angels guide his dreams. Indians since before the white man came to America believed spirits guided them. Church believes a higher power is out there too. So if you want Tony Yaniz in Drag (Romero) or more of our happy-go-lucky mayor who does nothing but attend charity events, quit worrying about Sloan’s angels.
[Rotten Road] If you want to drive on a road that is really coming apart, and who doesn’t, try the Overseas Highway from Rockland Key into Key West.  Am I the only one around who notices this?

[Contaminated Water Supply] One of reasons for the Toledo water crisis is people’s concern for their property values.  They all want that perfect lawn so they dump on the fertilizer which ends up washing into Lake Erie and helps to promote the algae bloom.  You think they will stop? No more than they will stop texting while driving.

[“Best western”] The best western of all time is Welcome to Hard Times with Henry Fonda and Aldo Ray, a 1967 Western film based upon a novel by E. L. Doctorow. That’s the way the old west was! He kills the only men who stand up to him, the town founder Mr. Fee (Paul Birch) and town undertaker Mr. Hanson (Elisha Cook, Jr.), as well as raping and killing Fee’s girlfriend Flo (Ann McCrea). Before he leaves, he burns down the handful of buildings.

The really best western was “Once Upon a Time In the West” with Jason Robards, Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda and Claudia Cardinale. That was the best darn western I have ever seen, hands up!
I have to stop saying, “How stupid can you be.” I think people are starting to take it as a challenge.

[“7,000,000 Spams for Hawaii”] The Hawaiians discovered Spam during WW2, when it was being served to American GIs. It didn’t need refrigeration and had a long shelf life. A favorite snack is Spam Musubi, a sushi form of Spam. Even President Obama, who was raised in Hawaii, once ordered Spam Musubi, on the campaign trail.
[Crooks] Heads up Big Piners. The two Miami Cuban guys who drive around in the black pick-up, towing a wood-sided trailer, collecting scrap metal, are not to be trusted. A few weeks ago my husband put some metal out for them to take and quite innocently told them that he had more if they came back in a few hours because he had to take his wife to the doctor right then. When we returned, he found they had entered our fenced property and stolen several power tools and all of our hurricane panels. Keep those scummy bastards away from your home!

[“Best Western”] Technically speaking I wouldn’t call it a cowboy movie, but Sam Peckinpah’s ode to the dying old West, “The Wild Bunch”, is considered by many experts to be a  masterpiece of the cinematic art form.  I don’t  understand how he came up with it because the rest of his movies sucked by comparison. Brown Recluse Spiders
might not live here, but I’ve seen two ghastly bites on two different locals over the years. One of those bites was like hole into one guy’s leg. A big, deep ugly hole. So someone had better tell those two guys that there are no Brown Recluse Spiders in the Keys.
To the dreamers thinking about moving down here to paradise,  that’s fine with me.  Just bring plenty of grandma’s cash because I don’t have any intention of paying for your affordable housing if I can help it, in spite of what our local politicians want to force me to do.  I spent the best years of my life working in a s**thole up north in order to get here.  I don’t care if you were born here either, that doesn’t mean crap to me

hunting deer dead
[Deer Mortality] Last week, front-page stories in 3 local newspapers provided rosy, “problem-solved” stories that to prevent deer mortality the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service punched 50-ft. holes in a 2-mile plastic fence that had been erected by sewer contractors to control runoff into adjacent waters — as mandated by state law. Protecting the deer was absolutely justified, but it is disquieting that such crisis management was necessary, indicative once again that for the sewer project one agency doesn’t know what the other is doing. It appears that until prodded, there is a systemic indifference for cooperation among some agencies, a pervasive attitude that the rules apply to citizens but not agencies. Does DEP still exist? and who is overseeing the sewer construction work? The real story not carried by newspapers is how did 4 miles of plastic fence (2 miles on each side) get installed on Long Beach Road without anyone notifying the Key Deer Refuge? Sure makes one wonder about other issues with the sewer project, doesn’t it?

[“When to use baking soda”] I seem to remember my mom saying that you put soda in buttermilk biscuits according to how sour the milk was.
Forty-eight percent of participants in a French study rated soda in a blue glass as more thirst-quenching than soda in glasses of other colors, likely because they associated blue with cold.

brown recluse spider5Brown recluse spiders do live here! I have been bitten 3 times over the years. The bite itself is painless, the post bite is very ugly. It took months to heal. The bite will start with a red bump that will change into a mark that looks like a bulls eye, dark in the center and a lighter ring around the outside. It will open up and remain open. The wound will get bigger and deeper. Get some professional help, No kidding, my friends. ~Joe /Coconuts   Link
The world’s first electric traffic signal is put into place on the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio, on this day in 1914. In the earliest days of the automobile, navigating America’s roads was a chaotic experience, with pedestrians, bicycles, horses and streetcars all competing with motor vehicles for right of way. The problem was alleviated somewhat with the gradual disappearance of horse-drawn carriages, but even before World War I it had become clear that a system of regulations was necessary to keep traffic moving and reduce the number of accidents on the roads. As Christopher Finch writes in his “Highways to Heaven: The AUTO Biography of America” (1992), the first traffic island was put into use in San Francisco, California in 1907; left-hand drive became standard in American cars in 1908; the first center painted dividing line appeared in 1911, in Michigan; and the first “No Left Turn” sign would debut in Buffalo, New York, in 1916.

Various competing claims exist as to who was responsible for the world’s first traffic signal. A device installed in London in 1868 featured two semaphore arms that extended horizontally to signal “stop” and at a 45-degree angle to signal “caution.” In 1912, a Salt Lake City, Utah, police officer named Lester Wire mounted a handmade wooden box with colored red and green lights on a pole, with the wires attached to overhead trolley and light wires. Most prominently, the inventor Garrett Morgan has been given credit for having invented the traffic signal based on his T-shaped design, patented in 1923 and later reportedly sold to General Electric.

Despite Morgan’s greater visibility, the system installed in Cleveland on August 5, 1914, is widely regarded as the first electric traffic signal. Based on a design by James Hoge, who received U.S. patent 1,251,666 for his “Municipal Traffic Control System” in 1918, it consisted of four pairs of red and green lights that served as stop-go indicators, each mounted on a corner post. Wired to a manually operated switch inside a control booth, the system was configured so that conflicting signals were impossible. According to an article in The Motorist, published by the Cleveland Automobile Club in August 1914: “This system is, perhaps, destined to revolutionize the handling of traffic in congested city streets and should be seriously considered by traffic committees for general adoption.”

The Magnificent Seven. It may not be the best western of all time, but it’s my favorite. Fantastic music and is there a better line anywhere than when James Coburn says, “Nobody throws me my own guns and tells me to run … nobody!”
[Sewer Connection] I feel sick in my stomach after reading a reply from a professional friend in the business who has had years of experience building commercial and residential structures and designing and installing sewer systems. I sent him a picture of my lot and house asking how I should go about hooking up to the street connection. He laughed and said he could do it in two hours with a $150 back hoe rental and about $50 to $100 in parts. Now lets hear it from all you plumbers out there!

don’t think Dems have too worry to much about this election cycle. Check out the fiasco in the Republican race in Mississippi. Photographing elderly folks in senior housing and all kinds of the usual crazy right wing goings on weve come to love.

We can also never forget Karl Roves election night meltdown………..NOOOOOOOO its not over yet. Now that was a crazy moment.

In reference to FTR and the man that had to listen to the rant against Obama. I understand the mans problem. I have listened to and tried to discuss with people that have gone off on Uber Right wing rants. FTR assumes that the man was there Mooching drinks. Yet another example of the Fanatical Right Wing way of thinking. This man ( who could have been there and bought his drink first ) did not correct the person that was obviously speaking about things that he probably did not understand. I would assume that you Mr. FTR might have something to do with that. Could it be that after reading your posts with other people that have tried to have a rational discussion with you only to have you ignore their facts and dismiss them as if they were of somewhat less intellect. Arguing with someone that will not listen to the other side is like pounding your head against the wall. You won’t change the walls mind and you are only going to give yourself a headache.
Another good example why you should never take anything FTR writes seriously.
Yesterday he wrote, “11,472,000 Americans have left workforce since Obama took office. In July 2014, there were 92,001,000 Americans, 16 and over, who were classified as “not in the labor force,” meaning they not only did not have a job, but they didn’t actively seek one in the last four weeks.”
Sounds bad. He has repeated this stat ad nauseam with no mention or recognition that there is an explosion of baby boomers retiring. Once again FTR wins the “lie of omission” award.
“I had to listen to a guy railing against the President yesterday at a Marathon bar” Dear FTR guy, why do you waste your time rebutting lefty losers like that poster yesterday? We who have a slightest bit of gray matter know the left are nuts and are the waste products of bad education and religious BS. They cannot help themselves except at the welfare office. You make mistakes in logic sometimes, but that is allowed. They live in a mistake!
from the right
A POSTER WROTE: “Fox News, true to form, is busily trying to stir up a panic over Ebola in this country.”

boo5FTR’S RESPONSE: For the left, Fox news is the boogie man. BOO. The left’s propaganda machine has carefully inculcated into the psyche of the left true believers that nothing that Fox reports is true. Currently the left and the admin are doing all in their power to convince their true believers that the current border invasion is totally benign. That there is no danger from any infectious disease being carried by the tsunami of illegal immigrants and the children seeking asylum from Central America. But is that spin true?

The short answer no. An emphatic no! It’s been widely reported that the admin is bussing and shipping the children all over the country, from Alaska to Louisiana. It is also widely reported that that many of these children are infected with chicken pox, scabies, MRSA staph infections, lice, cholera, malaria, and digestive tract illnesses, particularly because people are being detained in close quarters. The children are coming from areas with no medical care, many of these children have never seen a doctor, been to a health clinic, or had any access to medical care, never mind being vaccinated.

But what about Ebola? Very recently a leaked intelligence analysis from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed the exact numbers of illegal immigrants entering and attempting to enter the U.S. from more than 75 different countries. The numbers are frightening. It is important to note these numbers do not include data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Among the significant revelations are that large numbers of individuals from nations currently suffering from the world’s largest Ebola outbreak have been caught attempting to sneak across the porous U.S. border into the interior of the United States. At least 71 individuals from the three nations affected by the current Ebola outbreak have either turned themselves in or been caught attempting to illegally enter the U.S. by U.S. authorities between January 2014 and July 2014. Please think about the fact that border authorities estimate that about 4 times as many that get caught, get through into the US.

The two patients returned to the US in isolation pose virtually no threat of spreading Ebola, but the untold numbers of people from the Ebola stricken nations pose a grave threat. And still our friends on the left, and the Obama administration refuse to even consider actually securing our southern border. Ask yourself why. And no, the source for the foregoing was not Fox news. Link

Part 2) A new poll conducted by Marist College’s Institute for Public Opinion for WSJ and NBC News, reveals that a narrow plurality of registered voters said they preferred Republicans to take control the Senate. Registered voters preferred Republicans maintain control of the House by the same margin. Deer Friends, if you really want to make a difference, pick a Republican Senate candidate in any state, and send him/her a few bucks….it will really help. I suggest Georgia, Kentucky, Iowa, Michigan, Arkansas, Louisiana or North Carolina.

Fingers-cross_I_swear-liePart 3) The White House is vigorously defending CIA Director John Brennan, calling him a man of “great integrity” amid calls for the intelligence chief to step down after the agency admitted to spying on Senate staffers. The White House assures us that “John Brennan is a man of great integrity and ability. He’s someone the president knows very well and has confidence in.” Yup, yup, it makes perfect sense that Team Obama would admire a man who has proven to be a serial liar under oath to Congress, a man who has illegally bugged Angela Markel’s phone, illegally bugged certain Senators computers, and illegally accessed Congressional staff email. I believe that when he took his oath of office, he swore to uphold the laws and the Constitution of our nation. He has violated that oath.

Here’s what Brennan first said about hacking Senate computers. “As far as the allegations of the CIA hacking into Senate computers, nothing could be further from the truth,” “We wouldn’t do that. I mean, that’s just beyond the, you know, the scope of reason in terms of what we do.” But they did, and he later was forced to admit it.

Brennan should be booted out the door. Each of us should think carefully about the slope we are on that is sliding us into more and more intrusive government. It is our freedom to lose.
