Bird Walk
Friday,
February 10 – Long Beach Trail
March 9 – Watson Trail
April 6 – Ohio Key
Everyone is invited to join a guided refuge trail walk for birders and
outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. The centralized
meeting point for all walks will be at the National Key Deer Refuge
Visitor's Center, located at the southeast corner of the Big Pine
shopping plaza. From there, participants will caravan to the scheduled
trail site. Maps will be provided at the Visitor Center.
A prompt departure to the alternating trail locations will take place at
8:10 am to avoid missing out on morning bird activity, so arrive early
to get your bird-friendly, shade grown coffee or other beverages at
nearby shops. Each walk will end by 11:00 am, or whenever bird activity
drops for the mid-day heat.
Participants should bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, comfortable
walking shoes, water, binoculars or spotting scope, field guides, and
dress appropriately for the weather. A limited supply of loaner field
guides and binoculars will be available for participants during each
walk. Feel free to ask for one if you don't have your own. Call the
Visitor Center at 305-872-0774 for more information.
Walks are scheduled to take advantage of the spring and fall bird
migrations, and plant blooms in the Lower Florida Keys. It’s important
to meet at the Visitor Center, as walk locations are subject to change
without notice, depending on current weather and trail conditions.
Interested in Helping? Experienced birders, naturalists, and outdoor
enthusiasts are welcome to assist with wildlife/plant ID, teach others,
and lead additional walks. Call Karen at 305-872-2239, ext. 226 to sign

Kids' Nature Habitats
Wanted
Saturday, March 31, 2012
Kids in the Keys and elsewhere in Florida can enter the Florida Wildlife
Federation's third annual Kid's Wildlife Habitat Contest, open to youths
ages 12 and under. It's easy: Just tell contest organizers how your
nature habitat -- whether at home, school or somewhere else -- provides
water, food, cover and a place for wildlife to raise its young.
The habitat can be anything from a
butterfly garden to bird nests. The winning habitat will be featured on
the federation's website and in its newsletter. The winner will also get
an age-suitable gardening book and commemorative plaque. Entries must be
received by March 31.
The federation says there's great
concern among health-care specialists, educators, environmentalists and
parents about the shrinking amount of time children spend playing
outdoors. Less time outdoors can mean increased obesity and less
first-hand observation of basic scientific lessons to be learned from
being outdoors.
Trying to stem that is the reason
for the contest -- to get kids to reconnect with nature and at the same
time teach them something about identifying plants and animals in the
natural world. If your child or students don't already have a habitat to
nominate, go to www.fwfonline.org to see how to create one, and what
past winners did. The winner will be announced on Earth Day in April.

Hines at (850) 656-7113 |
