"A
new study has reaffirmed a growing demographic trend in Florida: The state
is seeing its population growth slow to its lowest level in three decades.
The lower rate of growth is caused largely by people leaving
South Florida
where the cost of living is driving them away from the region."
You are taxing yourselves to death and allowing your elected officials
to "spend" your hard earned dollars in crazy schemes. Meanwhile your
services are being cut off and your neighbors laid-off. The
school enrollment is dropping each year as your young couples flee Monroe
County. Your roads are looking a whole lot like those in Mexico (and some of
those are better). Soon, it looks as if you will have more tax added onto
your fuel bill, more sales tax than most states if it goes to 8.5% or 9%, an
additional fire assessment to homeowners and I believe, if they thought they
could get away with it on a Federal Highway, a toll to keep more tourists
away or they will just increase the bed tax again.
Because of the sewer mess and possible fines after 6/1/10 if you do not have
an interim system or hooked up to a central sewer which your elected
officials have just ignored as far as an outsider can see, they have had
years, yet, where is the money set aside and where is the plan? Is it
possible that it may cost homeowners $6,500 to $10,000 to hook up if it is
ever built? How much will the fines be until the sewer is finished? After
all these years down here, I am very sad to see the locals and business
owners drowning in taxes and red tape. Take a good look around you and see
the buildings and sites where business is trying to survive and what shows
up the worst is the ones that have all ready gone under.
There
is light at the end of the tunnel. The United States, Monroe County and
especially those on Big Pine Key and No Name have to take back their rights
as Americans from the environmental wackos and the animal rights groups that
have taken you down this slippery slope. On a national level, we have to
build nuclear power plants to get weaned off oil fired electricity; we have
to drill in Anwar to stop the fists of Arabs choking the price of oil in an
ever upward spiral. We have to out vote those who have misguided the many
and put our country at the brink.
You,
the voters have a chance to get some of your money back from the sinking
ship fiasco. You voters should go to the next meeting and demand your down
payment back and ask those who represent you to refuse to allow another
penny to be spent on something that the few divers that can dive already
have. A good old Boston Tea Party type meeting may finally open the eyes of
those elected. No yelling and screaming, never any violence and it will
take time, but if you want your Keys back the only ones that can do it are
looking you in the mirror each morning. If you care about your Keys and you
vote here, let’s hear your voice. If that money was earmarked for tourist
tax dollars, then it’s high time that it went toward the sewers and the
percentage of tourist poop that will be going in the sewers. |
GLEE’s
1st Annual Green Living Awards will highlight progressive steps
towards sustainability taken by local citizens, businesses and policy
makers. The goals of the Green Living Awards are to promote Keys
initiatives, educate about what’s possible, encourage social norms, identify
local leaders and promote pride and spirit in our islands.
Four local awards
will be bestowed amongst GLEE’s three audiences: Individuals, Businesses,
and Policy makers (Agency/Organizations and will have a separate award from
Local Governments) Nomination notifications may be made by anyone via GLEE’s
website. All website visitors are allowed one vote for their favorite of
each category. GLEE’s “Green Ribbon” committee will choose one final Award
Winner from the high scorers from each category, with all other high scorers
receiving Honorable Mentions. Final selections will be announced at Expo

This is just a naked little note about my feelings
regarding Sandra Downs' recent accusations of unethical behavior
at MCSO. You may remember me as the petite, dark-haired librarian with
the office in the far corner of the Public Library in Key West.
As a librarian, I'm an active supporter of First
Amendment rights. I am proud that these rights are a core value of my
profession. Free speech must extend to all, even though we might
ardently disagree.
What is causing me great pain is Ms. Downs'
accusations against my husband, Mike Rice. Mike and I met just a few
days after my arrival in Key West. I was smitten by his deep sense of
integrity, stellar work ethic and darling dimples. That was 10 years ago
and I remain in awe of his strong character and abiding sensitivity. I
grieve to hear these very qualities impugned by Ms. Downs.
Ms. Downs recent complaint to the State Ethics
Commission is akin to throwing noodles at the cupboard and hoping some
will stick. Her accusations are not based on fact. For example, Mike's
father did not perform his son's psychological test for employment. That
would be wrong. Ms. Downs has no information in this matter and is
merely HOPING that something will stick.
Our local print and radio media reported on the
complaint with utter disregard to journalistic integrity. Was there any
attempt at investigative reporting? No, the stories were just meant to
be tantalizing. (On your website, you even characterize Ms. Downs as
"colorful" and her stories as "yarns".) The truth is utterly boring in
this case. And when the State Ethics Commission releases its findings on
Ms. Downs' complaint, will that story receive play in the local media?
Sigh, I expect not.
During this sad time, I meditate on God's words:
"Be still and know that I am God." I'm trying to shut out this
distracting chatter of utter meanness that surrounds my family and to
treasure what I know is Truth.
So, yes, the First Amendment protects our freedom
to vilify someone's character with all manners of nasty lies. And with
the Internet, it is available for all to read anywhere/anytime. But I
will continue to champion Ms. Downs' rights to free speech and your
rights to print her colorful yarns.
In my job, I'm constantly reminding our customers,
especially senior citizens and children, that just because
something appears on the 'net doesn't mean it's fact. Now I have a very
apt and personal example.

I
wanted to tell everyone how pleased and impressed I am with
Crazy Fish.
Betty and the gang have done a wonderful job. The food and service has been
awesome. I have eaten there probably 8 or 9 times over the past 2 weeks and
every time, I had had very good service with a smile and the food was
great. Thursday night, Mexican night has become my favorite. A lot has
changed there, the place is very bright and cheery and I think everyone
would enjoy the place. If for some reason you have any thing that you don’t
like about the place, whether it is the service, food or anything, let Betty
know. She will correct it if she can. Danny and I (Noreen) thank everyone
who has visited there and continues to go there. Capt Dan would be so proud
of what has become the Crazy Fish (Capt Dan's Key Deer Bar and Grill) I am
sure he is looking down and smiling big time. |

O'

nuts with short tempers, proceed letting the Republican party thrive, and
let Celine Dion have a fruitful career.

[Sink the Vandenberg] I
can’t let this go. Two days in a row someone said the Vandenberg money came
from a special County fund (or something like that) and would not affect the
budget (or something like that). Where do these hair-brains think that
special fund comes from? It comes from the property taxes paid from hard
working Keys homeowners like me. The County is in the worst fiscal shape in
the thirty-odd years that I’ve been paying taxes here and the last thing we
need at this time is to give $2000,000 to sink a ship than only a few people
will ever see or benefit from.
I agree that we do need more artificial reefs, but the
County just cannot afford it at this time. We are under orders from the
state to sewer the Keys by 2010 and we don’t have the money to do it. If
we’re not sewered by then every homeowner is going to be fined. If you owned
property in the Keys you would know all this and appreciate the mess our
leaders have put us in. |
|
[How
do you like that?] I am outraged to think that George Bush has that ultimate
power over my life. The congress that allowed the Military Commissions
Act to pass were cowards, liars, and thieves. They were cowardly in
front of the administration's propaganda about "soft on terror", liars about
the real reason for their votes, and thieves because that bill stole our
national identity and strength. My father, who died in France in WWII to
stop Nazi ultimate power over human life, is rolling over in his grave to
see what sniveling weaklings we have become before the world. |
|
Yes, I
am a Patriot Act lover. Because of the Act and many other changes
after 9/11/01 in our government we are more prepared for the next attack
from Muslim extremists. The way I see it is the more they try, the better
the world is getting at catching them then it was before the Act.
Especially important in all the surveillance is being able to tap the phones
of calls coming in from suspected Muslim extremists to American phones, in
fact to any other country where their cells may be plotting the next move
against freedom. Once the calls are made the Act makes it possible to keep
track of the person or persons called. Drug enforcement branches with a
court order can tap the phones of suspected drug dealers.
Lets
say the suspected drug dealers in the Keys were also business people (in
order to launder all that cash, I bet they have "fronts") Lets just say
that I called one of these black-hearted-low-life-scum-bags about the legit
business they are indulged in and do business with them. Oh, my goodness,
now my phone is tapped and the feds are hot on my trail. What a laugh...who
cares? I do not even cheat on my husband or my taxes, let alone drink or
smoke. I have been known to let a curse word fly, but usually muttered.
I love my country and even
appreciate that my Federal taxes do some good even if I feel there is waste
in the system. What you do not realize in your paranoia is that there are
millions of us out here that just work, live, love and go through life
obeying the law. And to the poor working federal wire tapper that may have
listened to my conversations (I do highly doubt this) the cow #810 did
finally take her calf after 3 days of persuading her that it was hers and
the Mystic Hill bull is fine, it was just a scratch, it wasn't too wet to
drag the cornfield and our surveillance system is working and all cameras
are a “go” and recording. All the kids, grand kids and great grands are
doing super. Down here in sunny Florida the Cobia bite has been stronger
earlier this year and the yellowtail are slamming, Grouper have been easy to
catch but because of size harder to bring home and the size of the Lane
snappers, wow! The American dream is alive and well if you just pursue what
is out there and let the Patriot Act protect America. |

I have to know. It seems the
biggest topic to hit The Keys in the past few years is the child molester

Even The Citizen printed one very small article on it and it died. Who's

Has
anyone else been receiving bills from doctors for services over a year?
(one of mine was 2 1/2 years later). You have an operation and at the time
your doctor has 3 or 4 more doctors there as well, that also charge for
their service but much later. They never send a bill for over a year and by
then the insurance is bypassed. Is this something doctors are doing so
they don't have to accept the contractual adjustment? Is this a ploy to get
ever penny and bypass the insurance we the people pay dearly for? I have
received two bills like this in the past month. I understand that they have
3 years to send a bill, along with a detailed explanation of the service and
you are liable to pay. |

Reading the depraved babble from
these nut cases that enjoy killing and torturing animals, or who are
trying to get attention claiming they do, or who engage in
other psychopathic ravings (“the best guns to use to kill people and
animals”) have become disgusting. Maybe one of these mental midgets can get
some help putting together a website where their kind can threaten and brag
and share torture stories with each other. Fortunately, I can choose not to
read this garbage, so I'll opt out of the Telegraph for a while until these
clowns finish getting their pathetic kicks, at our expense. |

How
come there was no e-mail address attached to the posting concerning
Cindy and Bob Peryam? That has to be the most accusatory, slanderous
posting I have seen in a long time. No facts, just accusations, yet no name
attached to the posting. For goodness sake, the man is running for
sheriff. Could this have been sent by one of his opponents? Or maybe one
of their minions? Come on, please let us know who sent that in. The public
deserves to know the truth! (Ed: I forgot to put the link. I thought of
it at 5pm and added it then.) |

[Money
from Heaven] There is so much misinformation floating around about the
Vandenberg. I agree with the writer yesterday who said "It is not taking
yours, mine, and other's tax dollars in lieu of spending those funds in
other areas, such as fire support. Those are totally different areas and are
funded by dollars earmarked for each specific area. Please do not confuse
these."
Having an artificial reef will help save our natural reefs by taking the
pressure off them. The top area of the Vandenberg, once sunk, will be only
20 feet below sea level. I know I have friends that want to come down next
year to dive on the Vandenberg. If it is not sunk, they will go elsewhere
to dive. Tourism dollars will be diverted to other areas that have more
choices for diving.
I listened to the song written by Howard Livingston. It's a great song,
very nautical sounding. It really doesn't sound like his other songs, but
it's a wonderful sentiment to the Vandenberg and the "treasure she will
become". Thank you Mr. Livingston. I, personally, have sent the web link
www.bigshipwrecks.com to my diving friends and asked them to donate to the
cause. I hope the Vandenberg will raise the funds needed and will “go down”
on May 15th. |

Yes
it’s true that a goat may ram you if it gets the chance. Sometimes
it can hurt the person, but usually they look like they are being playful.
My Hubby was replacing a swimming pool weir (the flapper on the skimmer that
catches leaves and debris) and the homeowner’s goat quietly came up and
butted him into the pool. Luckily, there was water in the pool so he just
had to swim out and drip dry. He says its mostly male goats that do it and
he hasn't any idea other than it’s bred into them to ram anything in sight.
That was thirty years ago and we still haven't let him live that one down.
Needless to say goats do not live on our farm! |

It appears to this casual observer that Al-Sadr has much more power
over events in Iraq than American puppet Al-Maliki. He can start and turn
off violence with a phone call. Why haven't American and Iraqi forces
removed him from the scene? It's because he has such a wide following
(perhaps a majority) in the region that to mess with him would provoke a
bloodbath and prove the so-called Bush surge success to be totally dependent
on Al-Sadr and his army. |

[House
on barge] That was an interesting idea and
might work for New Orleans. But what happens when flood waters recede and
debris is sitting under the barge such as a tree or automobile? The barge
isn't going to settle level and if it's a big object underneath, it could
cause everything inside the house to shift to one side, possible creating
such torque on the supports that they rip loose. Stilt houses seem a better
idea given this scenario. How would you get that debris from underneath the
house after the flood has passed? |

Someone wrote in today asking
about Realtor bashing and they mentioned, quoted, "Alleged head butting
incident". I was at The Westin and saw the head butt, saw the victim
and saw the blood. I saw another man beat that coward. There was no
alleged incident it is fact. I, along with hundreds of other people, saw
it. The assailant called The Westin wanting to pay for the damages the very
next day. I know the manager who received the call. That is not alleged.
That is also fact. The only people wanting to call it alleged is the
assailant and his employer. If you ask the victim or anyone who saw her
they will tell you the blood was real and the two black eyes were real. |

[Incredulous] People who
have no clue about public funding should check out their facts
before contending that the Vandenberg project money was created by Monroe
County and the City of Key West from some magic fund. The $2M given by
Monroe County to this project is from infrastructure funding money. It is
from Ad Valorem taxes. It is "taking yours, mine, and other's
tax dollars" in lieu of spending those funds in other areas. There is no
"special set aside" or special tax district for Monroe County for this
project. No federal grant covers this $2M. This is $2M that COULD have been
spent on sewers, or parks, or people to maintain them.
Where do you think the money is coming from?
I was in a Division Director's meeting where then County Administrator Tom
Willi and County Attorney Suzanne Hutton discussed funding the Vandenberg
with infrastructure money, considering it analogous to a park. I was
incredulous. |

[Happy

Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You. I said to the Lord, "You

[Attention Patriot Act lovers] If there was ever any doubt, and
right here in our little haven:Wiretaps were far-reaching /By Kyle Teal
Keynoter 3/29/08
Hundreds of letters mailed to Key West residents have alerted them to
phones being tapped during a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration
investigation that started last July and finished in late October. Phone
conversations with suspected drug dealers were recorded but innocent
people who called the suspects or were called by suspects also received
letters, sources say.
The Keynoter obtained a copy of one letter. It says that on July 17,
2007, and Aug. 14, 2007, an order was entered by a judge with the Third
District Court of Appeal in Miami “authorizing the interception of wire
communications.” and that “during the period of authorized interception,
wire communications to or from your telephone were intercepted.”
The article concludes "Indictments are expected in the future, sources
say, though it's unsure who are the targets of the investigation."
Whew! Good to know it
wasn't all for nothing. What are a few civil rights' infringements as
long as maybe somebody might get indicted some day, somewhere. |

[Vandenberg
"This is a call to arms from the Conch Republic"] Howard Livingston has
done a lot of good for the community since he moved down here. It seems
that anytime he can play at a benefit, he'll do it. That said, I can't
understand why he hooked up with this project. As the other posters
yesterday, I don't know why anyone would want to throw good money after
bad. As I understand it, if the Vandenberg project goes under, (sorry I
couldn't resist it) the County, the TDC and the City of Key West may be
able to recoup their money, and use it for more necessary projects. If
this is so, I say "Keep the Vandenberg afloat". That is until it can be
sold for scrap. |

Okay boys and girls, we finally have a serious topic to debate -
toilet paper! Lefty/righty, Muslim/Christian, scented/unscented,
one-ply/two-ply; the options are infinitesimal. I have come to the
conclusion if we just unload our secret cache of TP we have hoarded in
our government warehouses and send a generous supply to the Middle East
in exchange for oil; we can end this war crap (pun intended) forever.
And if we feel real generous, we can send our government contractors
over to install the Political lobbyists’ special interest Can-Licker
model IV in all the Emirs mansions. |
|
[Sewers] What options
are there other than letting the individual or treatment plant operator
upgrade their system to meet the 2010 standards, now, at no cost to the
taxpayer or wait until the fines start occurring? Then the individual
must start paying daily fines and the village uses that for an excuse to
bring in the $200 million dollar central sewer system. There is a
terrible history of mismanagement by village staff and the
village elected officials, resulting in out of control pollution, salt
water in the re-use system designed to water the lawn at Flounders Park,
that cost almost $2 million dollars resulting in causing fines by DEP
and an impossible financial burden on our taxpayers/voters of Islamorada
which results in a bureaucratic victory by the village staff for bigger
government. Your Plantation Key Colony Waste Water program, under your
direct supervision, is currently over one million dollars in debt and
getting worst every month. Dave’s political double talk: "There are many
alternatives available to us, but they must be cost effective" is why
you should be replaced, except your opponent is even worst than
you. The taxpayers are in a terrible dilemma. |
You'll
find little support for sinking the Vandenberg in the county,
maybe in Key west, but not in the county. We are all angry at the
financial cesspit our Commission has put us in. One of the reasons we're
in this hole is the $2,000,000 the County has earmarked for sinking this
ship. |
|
People should have the facts before commenting about the Vandenberg
project. It is not taking yours, mine, and other's tax dollars in
lieu of spending those funds in other areas, such as fire support. Those
are totally different areas and are funded by dollars earmarked for each
specific area. Please do not confuse these. The Vandenberg Project is
asking for the public's support. The great thing about our country is
freedom of speech. Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band have
chosen to speak up in support of this project.
Howard has written a
beautiful song about the Vandenberg and has donated proceeds to the
project. If you want to listen to it, go to
www.bigshipwrecks.com. It's truly a beautiful song that anyone can
tell was written from the heart.
Howard and the Band donate their services and goods
to many wonderful charities in the Keys and elsewhere. If you know
Howard and the other Band members, then you know they're the most
generally kindhearted folks you've ever meet. They have chosen to
support the sinking of The Vandenberg. If you disagree, so be it, but
don't put people down for helping others. |
|

I don't have to put hooks on my trap lines, the snow birds snag
enough of them on my lines for me. |
|
[Sewers] Since the
local governments are responsible for not providing the sewer system
meeting 2010 standards then the local government should pay for any
fines levied by the state. In lieu of that, let the individuals pay for
their upgrade, then promise not to force them to hookup to a central
system. |

Almost seven years ago I sat,
as did millions of other Americans, and watched our government undergo a
peaceful transition of power. At first, I felt a swell of pride
and patriotism as I watched George W. Bush take his oath of office.
However, all that pride quickly vanished as I later watched the Clintons
board Air Force One for the last time. I saw 21 Marines, in full dress
uniform with rifles fire a 21-gun salute to the outgoing President and
first lady. It was then that I realized how far America's military had
deteriorated under the Clinton administration. Every last one of them
missed. |

[Concrete
barrier] Dear Ms. Leon, I have been informed you are the FDOT person
responsible for road safety in the reconstruction of US-1 and Florida
City. Obviously stripes on the road do not control the traffic or why
else is FDOT spending millions of dollars to install a concrete barrier
to prevent head on collisions on this highway? If indeed this is the a
solution to head-on collisions then you need to install a perpendicular
concrete barrier in place of a newly striped section of the south bound
road about to be opened for almost the same reason.
At MM 112 1/2 Morris Ave intersects the highway, from the east. FDOT has
created turn in and turn out lanes, on the southbound side of US-1 for
access to and from Morris Ave. These two lanes are only divided by
a small white striped section. Because of the notorious speeding drivers
who will be coming south bound and if for any reason the normal traffic
lane is backed up as soon as they see this unused lane on their left
they will use it for a passing lane--striping aside. If a southbound
vehicle is sitting in the left turn out lane waiting for traffic to
clear to proceed southbound they will be rear-ended by the speeding
vehicle. I would far rather they meet an immovable concrete barrier than
rear end my car. |

Finally, we found a great doctor down here that also has really good
nurses. Two other doctors had rude, cigarette smoking nurses, one rude
New Yorkah doctor had a nice male nurse.
Dr John
O'Connor and his people in
Marathon are the best. He is very smart, professional, his busy office
is spic and span and all of his nurses are very kind. A former nurse
down here administered our yearly flu shot by pulling off the cap with
her teeth and stabbing
the needle into our upper arms in a
violent manner. No dab of rubbing alcohol or a piece of cotton
afterwards. We requested a band aid and she said, "No."
Remember that we all have several options in where we take our business
and to keep our standards high among the many lower quality entities
which litter the Keys. |

[Who
is going to miss Sal] What is there to miss about a person that
tells half truths, smears good people’s
names, people that care about this County,
Community, and what is good for the citizens? Talk to some of the
people he has named, see how much of what Sal wrote was or is the
reality or the truth? Call some of your Commissioners and see if what
Sal said was straightforward or the whole story or even close to being
accurate? He is the froth of the earth, and when he does not get his
way, he acts like a big baby throwing tantrums, acting like a bully,
calling people names when these people will not talk to him or allow him
to waste their time; he then starts his smear tactics.
Want to see Sal have a
fit? Sal has a hearing with the Development Review Committee (DRC).
The meeting will be in Marathon on Tuesday April 8th starting at 1pm at
the Marathon Government Center. He is trying to transfer development
rights from Sugarloaf Key to Key Largo, MM 95 to build in a hammock, and
the county staff has recommended denial. ~keyscares@yahoo.com |

Can someone tell me what Obama

are bringing to the table? |
I’ve just caught up a little with what’s went on in
the Keys for the past week. Evidently it is just continuing to spiral
into a hole leading to hell. We’ve got drug dealers with wires and
incriminating evidence on sheriff deputies. Is there an Internal Affairs
investigation going on by the sheriff’s department to see who else may
be involved? It does not appear so, and why not? This alleged drug-using
deputy was sworn in as an officer to uphold and enforce the laws. He
must have friends that use drugs too. Isn’t Sheriff Roth concerned there
may be more of his staff involved?
Where
is the investigation by Sheriff Internal Affairs Director Cindy
Peryam? Or is Cindy busy shredding documents again; maybe the ones
pertaining to her husband’s affair with the young girl. Maybe Cindy
Peryam is so busy covering up her husband Capt. Bob Peryam’s messes,
that she has no time to pay attention to what is going on today. 27
years of clean-up for Cindy, because that’s how long her husband has
worked for the MCSO. And Capt. Bob was involved is some dirty messes:
affairs, young girls, drug dealer rings, disappeared persons, purloined
diplomas and alcohol related accidents.

Once
upon a time, Roy Stone inherited Roy’s Trailer Park on Stock Island
from his father, Roy Sr. The park was run down. It was full of drug addicts,
and some dealers. Scary people, the dealers. Roy rolled up his sleeves,
started going into the park, trying to get to know his tenants. It took a
while, but he finally befriended them and helped them organize a tenant
association. Now trusting Roy, they told him what was wrong with their
individual units. Faulty wiring, broken waterlines, etc. And about the drug
dealers. Roy dealt with the drug dealers, fixed the plumbing and wiring and
so forth. He installed a scaled-down version of Key West’s sewerage
treatment plant on Fleming Key. He offered these tenants a choice between
keeping their outdoor swimming pool, or all getting cable. They chose cable,
and the beautiful swimming pool was filled in.
After the park was in good shape, Roy offered his tenants a sweet buy-out
deal: small down payment and easy terms. Each tenant buying his or her own
lot, or the tenant association buying it all. There were no takers, even
though Roy kept telling them he would sell it some day, and they would be
better off if they bought it instead of letting it go to someone else.
Eventually Roy did sell it, and now the tenants live under the treat of the
purchaser some day refusing to renew their leases and trying to turn
the trailer park into yet another unneeded vacation or second-home
development.
If we are to have developers in the Keys, I propose Roy Stone as our role
model. He did everything right. His tenants did everything wrong. They
didn’t take his incredibly generous offer, a pittance compared to what their
lots would go for today. As I recall, Roy finally sold the park for $1.2 or
1.3 million. Last year, the purchaser was quoted in
Key West Citizen
as saying he could get close to $20 million, if he sold
it. He was trying to get one of our local governments to buy it for a few
million, and then lease it back to him for a maybe a dollar a year, and he
would manage the park and collect the rents--around $500,000 profit a year
after expenses. In this way, this much needed affordable housing stock would
be preserved. Affordable housing Roy’s tenants could have purchased for a
pittance, with very easy terms.

The
other day a poster submitted a moving and heart felt plea for more
Federal funding for medical research, the poster panned our cultures
values set and was especially harsh about the Bush admin.
The poster extolled the
praises of a powder which the application thereof enhances the bodies
ability to regenerate missing tissue. Here’s the flip side. The powder he
mentioned is the product of private research. The powder is to be sold for
profit. A couple of years ago a major Hollywood personality, suffering from
a debilitating disease, purposefully denied himself medication in order to
increase the visibility of his symptoms. This intended to garner sympathy
and credibility for his plea for increased federal funding for research into
human fetal stem cells. That plea theatrically presented with symptoms that
were staged by purposeful enhancement did not succeed in its goal. Shortly
thereafter private, not federally funded researchers, developed stem cell
generation techniques that did not require the destruction of human embryos
Federal funding of research is inherently inefficient because the
researchers are process oriented rather than goal oriented.
I hope that we will never
forget the nightmare of the 40 year ago Tuskegee experiment which was a
federally funded research program that utilized unknowing males as medical
guinea pigs in syphilis research. Many died terrible deaths. The poster is
correct when he says that tremendous strides are being made in medical
research, but the poster fails to tell us that most of the strides are being
made by privately funded researchers. This is as it should be. Perhaps we
should list all the major medical research triumphs, one column for tax
funded, and one column for private funded. Does anyone doubt that the
private funding column would tower over the tax paid column.

[Marathon no better than County]
You said a mouthful. Can you believe that 3 of the Marathon council laid
down for Singh? Councilmen Don Vasil and Mike Cinque were the dissenters.
(Thanks Don and Mike for standing up and doing the job you were elected to
do). Mayor Pete Worthington said the community needed the economic bump
that a conference center would bring to the Community. Councilwoman
Marilyn Tempest said the agreement would serve the greater good of the city
since affordable units would be built and the conference center could be
opened more quickly.
Citizens,
these council people were voted in to protect your welfare. The three
councilpersons that voted to give Singh his way better not hold their breath
for the affordable housing being built. Singh is one of the builders that
is causing the need for workforce housing along with the other developers,
but he and other developers are not building the non affordable housing for
their workforce, they expect the taxpayers to pay for the housing, just like
Monroe County has done for Ed Swift. When Swift builds homes for the
workforce, the County waives his affordable fees. That is money that our
Growth Management/Planning Department pays their costs out of, but now
Growth Mgr/Planning Department has increased public fees to cover their
costs, and transferred money out of the NROGO account so the County can loan
money to Islamorada ($50,000 plus) so the Middle Keys Land Authority can pay
their affordable fees. Out of our pockets comes the money. For the County
to cover their costs so Ed Swift doesn’t pay his affordable fees.
On Nov 2008 we need to ask our Commissioners to resend
this resolution allowing Ed Swift not to pay affordable fees, this money is
made up off our backs and our sweat.. Wake up Citizens get to these Council
meetings/BOCC meetings and watch what your elected officials are doing to

Where do people get
their information on Muslims? They make it sound much more exciting
than I had heard previously, what with all that
anal
intercourse and stuff. I thought there were only five things you have to do
to become a Muslim: declare yourself one, pray five times a day towards
Mecca,
give ten percent of
your income to the poor, observe the fasting period of Ramadan and make the
Hajj ( the pilgrimage) to Mecca if able.
All the other stuff
like using water instead of toilet paper is just a custom of various regions
within Islam (if you're left handed like I am, meal times can be quite
interesting!). All religion is crap, but when you start mocking one it
leaves your own wide open to the same public contempt. |

[The Big O and Rezko
cont’d] At this point it’s unclear exactly where when and how Obama came to
be associated with Rezko. The ultra liberal blog site “The Huffington Post”
reported that “Antoin "Tony" Rezko and Barack Obama are
deeply linked throughout O’s political career and have been friends since
1990.Mr. Obama turned to Mr. Rezko for help at several important junctures.
Records show that when Mr. Obama needed cash in the waning days of his
losing 2000 Congressional campaign, Mr. Rezko rounded up thousands of
dollars from business contacts. In 2003, Mr. Rezko helped Mr. Obama expand
his fund-raising for the Senate primary by being host of a dinner at his
Mediterranean-style home for 150 people, including some whose names have
since come up in the (in trial) influence scandal”.
It
is known that while O was at Harvard Law School Rezko offered him a job that
Obama declined, nonetheless early on he worked in Chicago as a “community
organizer”, and then for a Chicago law firm that was retained by Rezko. O,
a member of that firm, personally performed legal work for one of Rezkos
partners in a redevelopment project. Rezko became one of O’s first campaign
supporters and contributors when O made his first run for state senate.
Rezko has continued to be a major contributor and fund raiser for O’s
endeavors. O wanted to buy a mansion on Chicago’s South side, in ’04 he
wanted to bid on a property, but the price was a little out of his price
range. The seller agreed to split the property, but refused to sell unless
both parcels were sold simultaneously. The price? $165 million. O was able
to buy the mansion because Rezko’s wife purchased the second parcel.
Shortly thereafter O purchased a “slice” of that property from Rezko.
Subsequent to that Rezko and O made a deal wherein O would landscape the
entire Rezko property and Rezko would build a security fence around the
entire property. Voila! O now has a huge vacant side lot for his personal
use. Legal? Perhaps. Given that O was by then, an influential elected
public official, and that a huge component of the Rezko empire was dependant
on political favors, it most certainly was ethically questionable, you’re
damned right it was. Did I mention that it was widely known that Rezko was
under federal investigation at the time of these transactions? There’s more
to come, but for now Rezko is accused of using his position on two state
boards in an extortion scheme designed to enrich him and his political
friends. Obama’s pal and benefactor, Rezko has pleaded not guilty of
attempted extortion, money laundering, fraud and aiding and abetting
bribery. So, Kool-aid lovers, are you still anxious to trust our nation’s
future to the big O? By know, you know the challenge, don’t believe me, why
don’t you take just a few minutes and look it up yourself. I left a lot
out. |

[Voters

Yikes, brakes on boys! The misinformation steam
roller stops here before this post gets any traction. No government money
spent on things religious is a good thing. In fact words like US
Constitution, separation of church and state, etc are really applicable (and
beware religious right - this is one you're not going to win, because we got

If America has nothing

things.” I don’t need freedom I only need things and money. I am an American
of the 21st century. No matter what happens with the war on
terror Bush will be known as the president that has had the most detrimental
effect on Americans right to privacy. The new world order is leveling the
playing field financially, politically and socially among all countries. On
open boarders, we lose some of our freedom and they get a little until it
evens out. It makes it easier to sell products and less product differences.

It’s not just Muslims who don’t use toilet paper. India and Southeast
Asia are two places I’ve had to frantically search out a roll. They keep a

hand in the bucket. I don’t know. |

Cuba announced on Friday that it will allow Cubans the unrestricted use
of mobile telephones for the first time in the latest step by new
President Raul Castro to improve access to consumer goods. Cuba has the
lowest rate of cellular telephone use in Latin America with the service been
mainly restricted until now to foreigners and government officials. |

[Honda
of Key West] My son just called, having returned from his visit to Honda
of Key West. As it turns out, the owner had a problem with the credit card
company, and had genuinely thought that the problem had been resolved. To
his horror, it had not. My son said "he (the owner) bent over backwards to
correct the problem." My son earlier had agreed that the shop owner should
at least keep a hundred dollars for the inconvenience. Under the
circumstances the owner did not keep the $100.
My apologies to Honda of Key West. Also, thank you for
renewing my faith in local businesses. The other reader's responses,
supporting the dealer, were "spot on." Now, do I feel like a jerk? Yeah. |

As I read Jerry Coleman's
letter denouncing Kay Thacker, something seemed very wrong. Coleman
described how educated and intelligent he was, comparing his knowledge with
Kay Thacker’s. He gave the impression he knows what he is talking about, and
not Kay. Coleman also stated two commissioners (who have shown good
judgment for the county) are "boobs". What was the point of his letter?
Why Coleman would bother to attack a concerned citizen, who goes to all the
BOCC, Planning and DRC meetings on her own time and expense, tells me she's
probably on the right track. It has been Jerry Coleman's actions in the
past, listening to him speak at public meetings, reading his letters to
editors and what he has charged us tax payers for his work, that I have
determined Coleman to be a non-credible person.
In a time when developers, the people he represents, seem to get their way
all the time, it saddens me that Coleman would try to intimidate future
activists who are desperately needed to stand up against special favors to
these developers. We need to get more citizens involved because of people
like Coleman who use unfair tactics, abuse rules and regulations for the
benefit of developers who have money, time and power while the rest of us
work two to three jobs to make ends meet.
Developers have bought up trailer parks, got them rezoned, evicted families
living in these parks, displacing them and forced most to leave the Keys.
This is a workforce we loose for the benefit of the developer and loss to
our community. Developers make money off these people's hardship. This is
what Coleman stands for.
At the planning board meeting, when the "preservation for working
waterfront" item first came up, it was very late into the night, with only
one staff person left as Coleman was arguing for it left and right. Bay
bottom, never taken into consideration for land use, was then calculated
into the math to determine how much density should be allowed (people, bay
bottom cannot
be built on!). The density, normally 2 units per ace, was increased to 16
units per acre! There also was a hotel that developers wanted to build
which all of a sudden became a place for our '"emergency personnel" to
stay during times of hurricane evacuation. This "hotel" is promoted as a
much needed "hurricane shelter", but emergency personal already have
category 5 hotels in which they stay in during these storms. The benefit to
developers in building a "hurricane evacuation shelter" is that it does not
require ROGO units! (by the way, the hotel at the Key West airport also
will not require ROGOs)
So, developers have their "tricks", lawyers like Coleman and three county
commissioners to push whatever they want through. For this reason, we need
more people like Kay Thacker.
Jerry, it is your "gang of three" who should be considered the "boobs" and
you can throw yourself in with that crowd. |

Bush sent Taiwan sensitive top secret missile parts. When China

Local police departments do not get $100 per
arrest either. In fact, departments have to pay to jail the inmates. If
someone is found guilty, in addition to court costs, the arrestee has to pay
$40 per hour for the cost of investigation to the involved department. I'm
not sure how or why this is an issue, but there's your answer. |
In
yesterday’s Key West Citizen
was a report about Key West Police Chief Bill Mauldin accused of
sexually harassing Christie Phillips, who works in his office and in
City Hall. That reminded me of charges filed by Celeste Bruno against Monroe
County Commissioner Sonny McCoy over stuff that happened while she was his
aide, and later when she was Commissioner Dixie Spehar’s aide.

Even if Iraq turns out to be the best democracy
there ever was, President Bush was wrong to invade a sovereign nation. He’s
the worst president in the United States of America’s history. He was right
to invade Afghanistan because there was no government and the Taliban was a
direct threat to our security. Iraq had a government and was not a threat to
the United States. If a bad government is cause to invade a country why
don’t we invade Darfur or the Sudan? Their leaders are far worse than Saddam
was and have tortured and murdered far more than he did. |

[There
must be something to Islam I think the attraction is the moral values
they embrace]
Good God man, are you that stupid or what?
They don't drink but do hard drugs.
They hide their woman under rags but have sex with boys and goats.
They are sworn to kill every human being that is not a Muslim.
They eat food with their right hand and wipe their butt with their left
hand.
They use no soap or t-paper.
They only have virginal sex to make kids, otherwise it's the back door.
They give all their riches to the tribal chieftains and think it is Allah's
way to be poor.
They will die for the Koran.
And you call them sane with moral values? Pigs have better values. |

It's amusing the
author of
GoodMorningFloridaKeys.com
would be complaining about the editorial slant of a news story. When you
use a newspaper to carry your message, don't think they're going to print
what you tell them to print. If that's what you expect, I recommend you buy
an ad the next time. Many times have I wanted to write
GoodMorningFloridaKeys.com about what was posted and the error of his
writings. Informed citizens are best served by reading a variety of
newspapers, websites and watching more than one cable news station to ensure
they understand all perspectives of the same story. |

Sal Gutierrez is gone...yippee! Thank goodness.
Enough of his dirty, mean, nasty and untrue mouth. He reminds me of a fat

Good job Ed. You do not need the money that much to put up with his trash.

I’ve
seen George Bush walking hand in hand with a Saudi sheik in the Rose
Garden. You know, the Saudis, the ones where women still have zero rights
and where the Princes of the royals in Saudi Arabia was caught funneling
money to the terrorists. Republicans applaud Bush man kissing Saudi terror
supporters in his garden but whine like babies because of Obama’s pastor.
Where is the outrage concerning Pat Robertson’s saying America had 9/11
coming because of the gay issues? Republican morality is bought and sold
like the sales at Winn Dixie. They are selling and I’m not buying. Give them
hell Obama you have my vote. |
|
I am an Independent, not affiliated with either
political party. I choose to keep an open mind and vote for whoever I think
is the best choice. But I've seen a disturbing trend in The Democratic
party. Would someone please explain to me why they focus so hard at
slinging mud, not only at the Republicans, but at each other? If it
keeps going this way, McCain has my vote just on maturity. |
