[Bush spreading democracy] I also read that warlords including the ones that have killed Americans such as Sader’s Militia are getting to control their own areas. In other words the predictions that the Democrats and others in the Republican Party have made over the last few years are coming true. Iraq is not going to be a centrally governed democracy because some of the warlords taking over regions are against having a central government. They want their own little fiefdom. In fact things are going so great in Iraq that the northern Iraqi Kurds are fighting against the Turkish military. So Kurdish Iraqis are fighting against a NATO organization. How wonderful?

When we leave Iraq it will be none the better off then it was. Did you also read that Iran is paying millions to help Iraq rebuild? Isn’t it great that Iran, that wonderful nation, is helping restore its friendship with Iraq and sending tons of money to help Iraq rebuild. Did you also read that the government of Iraq wants American military contractors out? Take a day and read all of the news. Don’t just read and listen to American news listen and read articles and reports from other countries too. Iraq is going great. The flowered parades and free candy cannot be more then a year ahead can it? Rumsfeld promised us the parades would begin 6 1/2 years ago. It’s a delightful place. "Honey hand me those rose colored shades over there and turn up O'Reilly".

I can not believe Tom Willi talking about the BP and Islamorada Library’s possible closing.  He says "Some services are essential, some are not."  Has he been into either one of those libraries?  Does he even have a library card?  He seems to forget our children use them for homework help, book reports, projects, etc.  Are they not essential?  There are a lot of kids here in BP and the surrounding keys that depend on the library for help with school.  There are a lot of us tax payers here that use the library on a regular basis for books, movies and other services they provide.  The only thing that has to go is Tom. ~valdez424@hotmail.com

Blackwater contractors are the epitome of what happens when you sub-contract out a war. If Americans are not willing to sacrifice, we shouldn’t go to war. It’s just not important enough.

Two weeks after the fear-inducing nuclear disaster film The China Syndrome debuted the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania suffered a partial meltdown. That effectively stopped nuclear energy in the country. It looks times are changing, there has been an application submitted to build, in Texas, the first new nuclear power plant in fifty years.

PMS feels ten times worse down here, closer to the Equator.  Alcohol seems to help more than drugs from the pharmacy.  It's fun to be a woman. We get to birth the babies and have  mental-pause too. While the fellows get handsomer and drive really nice cars.

Why don’t they make a laptop computer with a detachable monitor so I can connect my 21” monitor at home and use it as both a PC and then reattach the monitor and use it as a laptop when I need one? Having two computers is too much work keeping them updated.

[Good realtors deserve money] What a lot of people don’t know is that realtors are self-employed independent contractors who get no salary only commission (how many would want to go without a known paycheck). The fact is that realtors mostly get only 1/2 of a typical 6% listing. Another mostly unknown fact is that they have to split that 3% with a broker (a realtor must work for a broker) anywhere from 50/50 to 90/10 depending on their contract. Some even have to pay a desk fee and for color copies. After that they have to buy expensive color ads, error and special car insurance, office supplies, web sites, monthly and yearly dues, signs, postage, promo branded items, etc. A good realtor will get you more for your house in a slow market than a warehouse, discount outlet realtor which brings cheaper clients. Most good realtors earn it.

Parrot Heads know that there is only one Jimmy Buffett.

[No farm subsidies] If you hate giving your money to subsidize others feel free to lead the parade against farm subsidies. Why should 1 penny of my hard earned money go to someone that’s paid to not grow something? Conservatives against farm subsidies is a great idea,  If the farmers can’t make a buck, oh, well, better grow something else. Farmers stay out of our pockets. Support yourself. It’s time real conservatives take this stand.

Kudos to Big Piners Bob and Sue D'Antonio for Grand Prize in the Fantasy Fest parade on Saturday. Also kudos to Marshall and Christa of Ramrod Key whose float "Duvalocity" also took top honors.  It's cool that the Lower Keys beat all those other floats.

Hey, Woody, I hope you’re happy wherever you are. We all love you.

So what happened to the tattooed bartender cutie from Key Deer Bar and Grill?  Did I hear she's been seeing some guy from the mainland.

How is it possible a republican supporter can say with a straight face, "Don’t spend more money then you have" then support President Bush? Amazing. China thanks you for your borrowing practices. They said, "Don’t worry about the principal just continue making the interest payments". Cheney said it best "Deficits don’t matter". It will matter to the next President.

[Dennis Cooper/The Blue Paper] One thing you failed to mention is that it's easier for you to publish the Blue Paper without making much money on it because you got a nice check back from the City (for the old Police Chief's screw-up) to help pay for it.

Regardless of how much corruption and malfeasance you uncover, it doesn't excuse the cases where you slander people and put words into their mouths just because you don't like them. How about reporting the facts without inventing things that didn't happen? When you make things up, you just reduce your credibility.

[Real Estate Agents]  I'm not sure why people are singling them out vs any other occupation.  We just bought a house in the keys and if someone thinks they could have sold us one without an agent, they're very mistaken.  Our search spanned over a year, and included, at least 4 full days worth of house visits--a heck of a time investment by the realtor with no guarantees we would buy.

On the selling side, we just sold a house in another state, and it was the same thing--they fielded so many calls, hosted a ton of visits, and guided everything through the closing.  Our closing ended up with a bit of a terms and conditions debate, and our realtor negotiated it with the buyer’s agent.

So don't look at the return on the sale, look at the effort involved. Maybe 1 of 10 buy, and they spend 40 working days on it.  They carry the advertising costs, office expenses, travel costs, etc. It's a very competitive market too so weaker agents won't cut it for long. I look for successful agents to work with, not cheap ones. You get what you pay for.

Thanks for stealing our pumpkin from Lost Cargo Trading Post. I hope it spits seeds at you and turns you into a goblin! Happy Halloween!

[Realtors] I am going to make a guess and say that the person who feels there should be a flat fee for a Realtor selling a house weather it is $500,000 or $5M and for sale by owner has never bought or sold a house.  Just think about a $5M house or even a $1M house.  Think about the buyers of such houses.  Do you think Donald Trump drives around and looks for a "For Sale By Owner" sign in the front yard?  If you wish to sell your house by owner, please do.  A Realtor will gladly sell your next door neighbor's house.  Most by owner sellers end up listing their house after a year of failure trying to sell it them self.  There is no shortage of listings these days.

Yesterday, I left out a couple of pages. Oopsie. This should get you caught up, right up until the conclusion. Sorry I couldn't find time to color any more pages. With the badminton tournament going on, studying for my Origami final exam, and reading David Lee Roth's auto-biography there’s just no time. I hoped you liked Dr. Dread. If you have any questions, comments, or racy photos of Jessica Alba please drop me a line at keytoons@yahoo.com Happy Halloween, folks! ~Dan Schwab

How come we don't get to vote on who gets to be in such a powerful position as the county Planning Commission? How do they get there and how can we get rid of them?

Everyone I know is a realtor.

Game Nightmare Before Christmas

[Realtors] How about some facts? How many hours of actual work does it take to sell a $400,000 house? How many to sell a $1,000,000 house? I'd bet they are pretty similar. How much do you spend to advertise each? How about paying realtors actual expenses and perhaps $100 an hour (pretty high pay for semi-skilled labor) for the time they actually spend working on selling my house. However, at 6% a $400,000 house amounts to $24,000 commission. From what I've seen they rarely work 40 hours showing and processing paperwork to sell a single house, let alone a couple of hundred hours. I seriously doubt if they spend $10,000 advertising such a house, either, but if they did they'd still have to put in 140 hours to earn a mere $100/hour. The main reason they are starving here is that there are too many of them.

State motto: Kansas. First of the rectangle states.

First Walk on Winn Dixie of the season is Friday November 2 from 7:00 to 9:00.  What is this?

[men still find me attractive] You can smoke your neck off and be ugly as sin, but guys will hit on you due to the lack of women. I would not, if I were you, venture into area where the women outnumber the men.

We have seen some terrorists are "home grown", born and raised right here in the USA.  Unfortunately, I fear the U.S. prison system is a fertile recruiting spot for terrorists and we will see more terrorism from within our own borders.

[Realtor Commissions: procedure the same for a $5000 shack or a $5 mil estate] Yes, the “closing” procedure is the same--after you have a willing buyer! The art is finding a buyer. It is up to a realtor to market a property. Take a look at the DuPont Registry, Florida Sportsman, even the Keynoter and the Citizen, maybe even on this web site. You'll find ads to sell properties on all of them. All of those ads cost real money and help people sell their houses. Who pays for the ad, the artwork, and the photography? The realtor pays out of his or her pocket and all of it on speculation, whether the house sells or not.

There are three different realtor associations in the Keys: Upper, Middle and Lower that provide computerized Multiple Listing Services. They cost over $1,000 a year to belong to each of them, so that a house for sale in Key West can be found by a potential buyer in Peoria by standardized criteria like location, price and floor space. Holding a real estate license requires continuing education and license fees--all paid by the realtor.

Who fields all the phone calls and decides who should get into see your house? How do you know they're qualified to buy? Who can structure a deal that will get the house sold? You, who might sell a few houses in a lifetime or a realtor who might sell a dozen in a year? There are times when the market is such that all you have to do is to price your house right and stick a sign out in front of your house to sell it. This is definitely not one of those times.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

[The Iraq war]  It continues, funded by a Democrat controlled congress.  Earmarks?  Still there.  We have to be understanding, after all, they have been spending a lot of time on investigations. I’m sure you will recall all the Bush administration corruption they dug up.  When are those trials supposed to start?  Again, lets be fair, after all, they voted about one thousand times and in those votes passed about sixty-one items of meaningful legislation. Hells bells folks, that a 6/10th of 1 percent success rate.  I wonder what those bills were all about.  I hope our friends in the Democrat controlled Congress enjoy their 4 day work week.

Make your Mountain Dew glow. Video

An informed buyer already knows through the MLS what is available in their price range and qualifications.   They would ask to see that house with the 4% commission.  If I found out a realtor, who was supposed to be working for me, was neglecting to show my houses because of the commission I would be over at the next realty firm so fast it would make your head spin.  And I would be telling others too.  Word of mouth is very effective in a small town.

As for 7% commission, I agree with you.  The only benefit there is that she (or he) may steer more of their own clients there to get double commissions.  They are operating on the premise that they are “top notch” and deserve a higher commission.   The problem is sometimes they forget to inform their buyers about some of the standard regulations.  One such 7 percenter  recently sold a neighborhood house to an investor who had a website offering the house for weekly rentals ("sleeps up to 28 people") before the sale even closed.  Maybe it wasn't their job to inform the investor that wasn't kosher.  But do I think they knew the investor's intention?   Oh, you bet.

[Real Estate fact left out] Realtors make a hell of a lot more money off a $1,000,000 home than a $300,000 home, and the honest ones will tell you the work they put into it is about the same. Why is the commission the same regardless of their profit?  Even lawyers and used car dealers bend on their commissions, so why not realtors?

Now that the oilman President Bush has put two more judges on the Supreme Court, The Court has decided to rehear the case against EXXON involving the punitive damages from the Exxon-Valdez accident. Those two justices should recuse themselves from the case but won’t. Political payoff for their appointment is to protect Exxon’s bottom line.  Quid Pro Quo!

[Your tax dollars at…work?] We should walk with our heads held high with pride for our Democrat Congress.  It seems like just yesterday when this Congress marched to the battlefield promising to work harder than ever before to vanquish the evil Republican hordes (whoops, minority).  Clarion calls for reform, end earmarks, end the Iraq war, and so on, rang throughout the land.  I guess they must have accomplished all they intended because they just announced that they were going to shorten their work week by 20%.  They have had about one thousand votes, of which 106 resulted in legislation, of which 45 were to name post offices or other public properties.

Talk about the humidifier prices, did you see the storage shed in the Classifieds with the same phone number on two ads? One is $600 and the other is $700. Looks like the same shed!

Noel, we are all waiting on that turn. What if it doesn't? I laid in plenty of rum.

We certainly do hate giving our money to freeloaders like the Iraqis?

[Rosy Republican reply redux]  I really should feel embarrassed for my Democrat friend who can’t or won't understand comparing our national debt to past times by factoring for inflation or for percentage of gross domestic product.  The absolute fact is that the national debt, when factored, is at 1957 levels, and is at the same level as it was during Clinton’s mid term.  The pity of the matter is that it demonstrates many Democrats slavish dedication to left wing propaganda.  This is no Republican defense “ploy”.  This Republican feels no need to be on defense, this Republican is on offense.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens to real estate down here.  The wealthy retired baby boomers are too smart to live next door or down the street from trashy, alcoholic dirt bags even if it's just for a few months at a time.  These are people who usually take good care of themselves and their possessions and would have a hard time living amongst the white trash, red-necky, New Yorkers who are rude money grabbers. Then add the gigantic demographics of Cubans who do not like the Americans. Do you see Donald Trump developing The Keys?

Yesterday afternoon I ran into Monroe County School Board Member John Dick in Key West. He told me to keep writing, the Keys need me. Hard to imagine any school kids tuning to what I’ve been writing, but perhaps I’m underestimating school kids, comparing them to the slug I was when I was a school kid, about as interested in government and politics as I was interested in going to school and working for my father’s company during the summers. Back in those days, the only thing I wrote was what I was made to write in school, which I enjoyed about as much as I liked going to school and working for my father’s company in the summer.
I told John that I’m scheduled to speak next January 10 ( 1 p.m.) at Kirk of the Keys Presbyterian Church, for that week’s Marathon Library Coffee and Books gathering. “Keys Politics” is the topic. I’ll be promoted as the author of GoodMorningKeyWest.com, and introduced at the meeting by County Commissioner George Neugent. Poor George, the company he keeps, what a reputation he’s developing. What do I know, maybe he’ll end up being my campaign manager when I run for dog catcher. Maybe that won’t bother Bicycle Joanie Nelson too much. I don’t remember her ever saying she wanted the job.

Meanwhile, back in Weirdville, I early-voted yesterday at the Elections Office in the government building kiddie-corner to the Green Parrot on Whitehead Street. Took me about two minutes to fill out the information form and then write “Sloan Bashinsky for Mayor” over Jimmy Weekley’s and Morgan McPeherson’s names on the ballot, and black out the ovals for Ty Symroski for Utility Board and Bahama Conch Community Land Trust’s referendum, and the oval for the City of Key West needing voter approval for any land it annexes or buys in the future. I sold my house on Ramrod and another I owned in Key West and used a Realtor who charged me 6% to do so on each sale.  He was worth every bit of the 6% and then some.  The boob who commented on the $50,000 to $75,000 cars needs to get a life.  My Realtor drove a Mercedes too.  Maybe he drives a Mercedes because he is very good at what he does and is successful.  I was willing to take $600,000 for my house and he suggested we list it at $725,000 so we could come down a lot on price negotiating.  I sold the house for $675,000.  My Realtor made me an extra $75,000 on the sale.  Another Realtor, who was going to charge me 4%, told me that she thought that I was right on the money asking $600,000 for the house.  So, the 6% commission on $675,000 gave me $634,500 and the 4% commission on $600,000 would have given me $576,000.  I plan to buy and sell again when things get better and when I do I will call my 6%-Mercedes-driving-Realtor over the 4%-Jaguar-driving-Realtor.  If you want a bargain go to K-Mart.

My friend dressed as a defrocked monk for Halloween and walked around KW carrying a sign that said, "Horney Again Christian". They’re lots of funny people out there!

[Rosy Republican Reply] The conservative defender has taken a new turn; he now tries to excuse the ridiculous national debt in terms of the past value of the dollar trying to make it look not quite as bad as it is. This is a typical Republican ploy. If they can’t blame someone else or instill fear they deny facts. I couldn’t finish his fantasy post, it was too dreamlike.

Coconuts will be having a Halloween Party tomorrow on Halloween, October 31st. I know that will throw everyone a real curve. That being said, it will be late. Coconuts is a late night club. Tell your boss today you will be a little late for work tomorrow, or better yet, take Thursday off! Coconuts will have cash awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for best costumes. There will be food and music. Stop by and say Hi and get a little spooky at the Nut.

[Real estate commissions]  3% vs 4%, split or no split.  Your comments tell me a lot about your business ethics.  If you will only show the houses that make the most for the realtor, it tells me that you really don't give a damn about the client that listed the house and could care less about selling a purchaser the right house for him or her.  That's the problem with the industry.  Too many whores in the business hoping to slam dunk a couple of sales here and there and not really providing a service to anyone.

No peeing in public! Paris mayor moves to stop public urinating

[Dennis Cooper/The Blue Paper] Cooper tackles uncomfortable topics and the Blue Paper doesn't just keep cops and other public figures "on their toes"--it's the only consistent force against corruption. He doesn't make a dime keeping that paper going--that's why so many weekly papers come and go--some rich person thinks it'll be fun to run a paper, but when they go from barely breaking even to losing money, they shut down. Cooper lives for what that paper stands for. Nobody gets it right all the time, but he takes risks nobody else is willing to take and doesn't care if he's revered or reviled. Nobody wants to be him, but nobody wants him to go away, either, unless they've been in the headlines. The general public probably has no idea what he's actually done and what he's given up for the purpose of exposing corruption and other nonsense in Key West.

Yesterday afternoon, I heard mayoral candidate Jimmy Weekley say in a radio commercial that he’s going to use what remains of the Truman Waterfront property to generate the revenues the City needs to crank its economy back up. I don’t see how he’s going to be able to pull it off.

In the first place, it will take a majority of the city commissioners, which includes the mayor, to decide what will be done with the 33 acres of land given to the City by the Navy.

In the second place, a good bit of the 33 acres is supposed to go for green space, which will generate no revenue for the City.

In the third place, Jimmy was on the ground floor of a referendum now on the November 6 ballot for 4 of the 33 acres being leased by the City to a private or charitable developer for 99 years for $1. The developer will build a retirement community, units in which will be sold to elders. The City will receive none of the sales proceeds, rents, etc.

In the fourth place, its is not yet known if the City will even have access to most of the 33 acres that are directly served by Southard Street, because who has control over Southard Street is tied up in a lawsuit in federal court in Miami. This lawsuit traces its origins back to when Jimmy Weekley was on the City Commission and the sale of the Truman Annex Navy land to Marathon developer Pritam Singh took place, and control over Southard Street was not nailed down in the City’s favor. [Hillary Hens] I’m pretty sure that a lot of Piners think that Ms Hillary is the best thing since the under wire bra.  I just heard a rumor that some left wing Piner is so caught up with the Clintons that he has started breeding a brand new hybrid chicken.  They call it the Hillary Hen.  These fowl hybrids are easy to spot.  They are free range, you just can’t keep them fenced in.  The males are smaller than the females and have a snow white crown.  Note that the females are dominant.  Males are seldom seen unless following a gaggle of young hens.  These young hens have ample breasts, dark blue plumage with a conspicuous spot, many vocalize by calling “ooh bill…ooh bill”.  The male has a unique crowing vocalization, “cop my doodle…woo woo”, often repeated.  The male spends most of his waking hours strutting, preening, displaying, and crowing for various gaggles of females.  He is a prolific breeder.  The male is only occasionally seen in the company of mature females.  The mature female is easily identified by her plump thighs, ample hips, and minimal breast; most notable is the presence of two left wings.  Her plumage is usually drab, except on those occasions when she is found in the presence of large groups of non hybrid brood hens, (NHBH), then, she is often seen in pale pink colors, sometimes displaying apron like artifacts apparently designed to calm the brood hen audience.  The female vocalization is unique in that it varies from NHBH audience flock to NHBH audience flock.  The vocalization sounds might include “ewe-all”, “wee-uns”, or other sounds that mimic the vocalizations of the local NHBH audience flock.  A distinguishing sound is laughter like braying cackle that is sometimes directed at threats.  These Hillary Hens are a unique breed; they are skilled at raiding neighboring NHBH hen houses, removing food and chicks that are then used by the Hillary Hens for their own needs.  The Hillary Hen is reported to be poor table fare, one taster, a Ms. M.L., reported that a male Hillary Hen left her with a foul (fowl?) taste in her mouth.  The Hillary Hens are subjugating flockers in that they are extremely aggressive, if left unchecked have the potential of subjugating other flocks.

Don't forget to bring the kids to the Big Pine Shopping Center on Wednesday between 6:00 and 7:00 for Trick or Treat.  And for the adults, the first Walk on Winn Dixie of the season is Friday November 2 from 7:00 to 9:00.

Just how clever can you get? This took some ingenuity, just to show you what Texas law enforcement is faced with on a daily basis, they can't take anything for granted or of face value. Someone cloned a Texas DOT truck and got busted smuggling drugs. I wonder how long they got away with it before they got busted? The vehicle was stopped by an alert Trooper on I-10 between San Antonio and Seguin, TX

A poster stated that "If the Iraqis decide to go back to the way they were then that’s their choice". Didn’t they have the chance to do that before? It seems we took their chance to stay the way they were away from them using that logic. I guess just acting like nothing ever happened is one way of looking at it. Over 3,000 dead American troops so the Iraqis can be just like they were before except now their country’s infrastructure is destroyed makes this war look even worse. Thanks for the bad news. Oh, well, lets just stare at our bank accounts it makes everything wonderful. Screw the war, who cares? It’s all about me.

[Celebration of a creative life] Please join us as we come together to remember photographer, teacher and friend, Marty Groffman Sunday, November 4 4-6 p.m. Marathon Community Theatre, MM49 Oceanside. [SCHIP]  It’s only been one day, but so far no poster has shared with us their knowledge of any child that has been denied lifesaving care specifically because of lack of ability to pay.  Ed has told us that this site gets about 50K hits per month.  I’m sure there are instances of this type of tragedy, but I’ll bet a no caffeine diet Coke that they are few and far between.  Health screening in school is a laudable goal, that’s why it is supported by many Republicans.  We most certainly do hate giving our money to free loaders, to worthless projects, to subsidize slackers, and to those who would use our money for their own personal political agenda.  I’ll tell you what, I’ve got a tooth ache, no dental insurance, and I’m on Social Security.  Why don’t you give me 25% of your next payday to get my tooth pulled?  Now let’s see, what is it called when you take something away from another person against his will?  Ummm, I guess it’s called stealing and it’s hateful.  What is called if the loot is used for “the common good”?  Ummm, I guess it’s called taxes and the left leaning folks call it “loving”.  So many liberal folks just can’t make an argument without using “hate” as a tool.  It’s a pity.

In August in Atlanta, televangelist Thomas Weeks was arrested for allegedly beating up and threatening to kill his estranged wife, televangelist Juanita Bynum, in a hotel parking lot before a bellman rescued her. (Weeks blamed Satan for the incident.)

[Iraqis came to America and killed 3,000 Americans] This bit of misinformation is linked to uninformed Americans believing the Republicans’ mantra that the Iraqi war is “The War on Terrorism”.

Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not.

I kind of try and keep track of what’s going on in Iraq. I’m a worrier, and I want us to win. It wasn’t until late Monday night that, quite by accident, I learned that we (the U.S.) had already turned over responsibility for local security of 7 of the 18 Iraq provinces to Iraq police and army personnel. On Monday, the Iraq government took over the control of security in Karbala province, a Shiite enclave. That’s the 8th province recently turned over to the Iraq government by U.S. forces. Not only that, Imams at Baghdad mosques are calling worshippers to expel al-Qaida from the area, labeling them as "false mujahedeens" or false holy warriors, according to an AP report. Has this good news been previously delivered to us by the big media, or have I just missed it? Damn, that sure sounds like great news to me. Is it possible that we’re getting ahead of the game? That loud “oh shit” you just heard was from your Bush Bashing pals in your ’hood who just heard the news.

The forecasters are now saying that this hurricane season may be the most inactive in 30 years. I guess we can all give credit to the hybrid vehicle owners for preventing this potential catastrophe. They should be very proud.

[Realtor's commission] The only difference between a realtor and a pirate is that it's legal to be a realtor.  The percentage charged for selling a property is ridicules. 7% of a million dollar property is $70,000 for doing what? The procedure is exactly the same for a $5000 shack or a $5 mil estate. The whole R/S business sticks and should be regulated to a simple fee of no more than $1000 per contract. For Sale By Owner should be the law.

Here's a photo of Woody taken in September at a friend's house. Woody had a best buddy in the form of his beloved dog, Zeke. When it was time for Zeke to go because he was so sick, Woody, myself, and another friend took him out front and buried him at sea. That was last year or earlier this year (I'm very bad these days with time frames). I think that was the only time I saw him cry. Woody could be a little rough sometimes, but his heart was good. He and I had a little agreement going that if he was starting to be too much of a ball breaker, I would remind him that he was "stirring the pot" and generally he would come back down to earth. But I hadn't had too much time for him lately, and of course now, this I regret.

My 80+ father met him a few years ago, after I moved here, and after that he always asked about Woody. Now my father was always a force to be reckoned with, even in his last few years. But Woody made an impression on him. And that's saying something! No, Woody was not perfect, and he had money difficulties, but for a few of us, he was a diehard friend. So here's to you, Woodman. Give Zeke a pat on the head for me. Oh, and by the way Woody, in case you didn't see, a bunch of your friends went out and planted a coconut tree at your favorite recreational island. It was a guy thing, so we ladies weren't part of it this time. There'll be something for you that we'll all attend in the near future and I promise I will be there.

men still find me attractive] That's because there about 20 guy's to every girl.

Kingston's Clam Bar is opening on Sugarloaf Key. Finally a down home restaurant and bar aimed at we locals. It's a bit off the beaten path but well worth the hunt. I know Jeff the owner, Michael the chef and Ginnie the bartender. We can count on them to bring us fantastic local fare, good fun and top shelf service. And no charge for refills of my favorite, ice tea! Take Crane Blvd to the old Sugarloaf Leisure Club.

[you are a freaking unstable freakmonster Iraq war is costing $100,000 per minute but the ability to mock the far right wing: Priceless!

[Mile Marker 24 Band] We have a fun week coming up with the annual Meeting Of The Minds Parrot Head Convention in Key West. These folks are the nicest people you will ever meet and all the money they raise goes to local charities. We are very honored to have been asked to perform at this year’s event. We will be playing at the Margaritaville Street Fest at the corner of Duval and Fleming Streets from 2:30 until 4:00 PM on Friday November 2nd. Then at 6:00 PM we will lead a conga line up Duval Street (Police Escort) to the Conch Republic Seafood Company where we will perform outside under the stars at 7:00 PM. Both events are open to the public and we would love to see all of our friends come out and show everyone how we party Keys style. We will also be giving away two trips to the Bahamas at the 7:00 o’clock show. One winner for the best Parrot Head costume and a second trip will be given away from a free drawing. Get your free tickets at our merchandise table. We are also videotaping and recording both concerts for use on our upcoming live CD and video.

I have been watching how Bubbas in top Key West jobs are getting replaced with people with no experience. The City Commission had several very experienced city manager candidates and they went ahead and hired the guy with absolutely no city manager experience (but he hangs out in Duval bars). They also hired a city attorney who's 35 years old and has no experience at all over several candidates who have worked for other cities in this very demanding position. The City Police chief is the same; 30 years in the military, none as a police officer and he gets chosen, without a bid process, to be Police Chief. I sure hope we get some experienced candidates running (Colonel Ramsay?) when Sheriff Roth steps down next year.

[Iraqis came to America and killed 3,000 Americans] When did that happen? I know Saudi Arabians and some nuts from Jordon are responsible for 9/11. Please notify the State Dept about your having information on Iraqis attacking America. They don’t seem to have that knowledge.

Captain Dan would love to hear from everyone. You can send him a card at: 1670 Whitesville Road, Toms River, NJ   08755. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He sends hugs to all.

Have you ever noticed that the people always complaining about how terrible they feel are the same ones who smoke cigarettes and drink alcoholic beverages every day? Ignorant people who drink alcoholic beverages create the same circumstances as those who throw gasoline on an open flame.

[Burn it down! They have to learn the hard way not to screw people] You can't be serious. How would you like it? That's why I bought an acre to keep assholes like you as far as I could afford to keep you away. Apparently the builder was complying with all the codes he was obligated to, or it would never have been permitted. You aren't going to get away with saying the structure would have been fine complying with your idea of propriety, because no one would ever make you happy short of your neighbors paying taxes on property kept vacant for your enjoyment. Again the responsibility for your happiness comes back to you. If the "friend", if you really had one, wanted to live in a deed restricted neighborhood then that's what he should've done.

That will never make sense to most dregs and parasites who have come to live here in the last forty years, because everyone else is responsible for your health and welfare, like the other asshole who thinks she's entitled to her "share of someone else's "wealth". Screw, baby. No one will ever have a chance to get on in life if jerks like these have their way. Your words "honor, caring, class" have no meaning or use to you, just only as they're applied to everyone else.

Another economics lesson for those claiming that the Real Estate agents should lower their rates now:  You have it ass-backward. When it's easy to sell a house, there are lots of fair-weather realtors out there ready to drop their rates, because they can sell more houses to make up for it.  But times are hard now, so the fair-weather discount realtors are gone (they can't sell anything now with the level of service they were providing), leaving the hard-working more expensive realtors to sell your houses.

Easy market = lower commissions.  Tough market = higher commissions. You get what you pay for.

Whoever thinks that the average realtor is driving a Lexus or a Mercedes must only be looking at the Spottswood or Bemke ads. Most realtors are barely getting by, driving high-milage PT Cruisers and such.  The "hard-working" statement isn't a joke, they will not be able to sell the house unless they work it. When they're able to sell the house, they have earned their commission.

Sure there are half-assed realtors who don't work the listing and waste everyone's time when it doesn't sell.  Any ire directed that way is clearly warranted.  But plenty of them do earn the money. It ain't all just "paperwork". Most realtors know that houses are overpriced. It's the sellers who won't drop the price.  Believe me, every realtor in the keys is pushing those who're listing with them to lower their asking prices.  It just takes time.

I wonder if the of Parrotdise ever gets tired of talking about himself? ~ohio.fan@hotmail.com

Monday October 29, 2007

[Stupid boating tricks] I got to the marina Sunday trailing a 50’ garden hose that was still attached to the flush valve on my outboard motor (talk about your “line overboard”). It’s a good thing the deer broke off the hose bibb when they were mating last week and I had to disconnect the flush hose to repair the faucet; otherwise there would have been water gushing all over my yard while I was out boating! To top it off, while I was out cruising around I smelled gas. My fuel filter had rusted and there was a pin-hole leak sending gas into my bilge. I immediately went back to the dock and pulled my boat out with my new 2006 Silverado 4x4 truck. To add insult to injury the drive shaft to the front wheels broke in two when pulling out the 20’ boat. The thing’s only got 15,000 miles on it. I had to get it and the boat towed. What a piece of junk, what a day. I also had to take it to Key West last month to replace the lower steering column shaft. I guess I’m through with Chevy trucks. I’m through with yesterday too. What an unpleasant afternoon. This all happened within an hour and a half. I drank the rest of the day away.

I am a "regular" at the BOCC meetings for the past year and half. I am there from beginning till end, and if there is an issue I oppose or support, I speak. So, I go up to the podium regularly.

Recently, events have happened which I find over the top and blatant. It is the treatment of our speakers, who oppose any decisions for development. It is so bad that I must write to the public to let our citizens understand what is happening at our Planning and County Commissioner Board meetings. It is these meetings that have brought drastic changes, negative impact and eviction of hundreds of trailer park residents in the Keys.

When the public speaks at these meetings, they share deeper thoughts on most issues and explain what impact the agenda item would have in our communities. Intelligent issues are brought up, which are omitted when developers make their presentations to these boards. These speakers open up "the other side" and bring balance. However, because developers have the majority 3 - 2 votes on both Boards,  it does not matter what is said, as it will not change the minds of those three votes.

It goes even further as I witnessed Donna Windle (P/C) and Dixie Spehar (BOCC) (both are members of the Workforce Housing Task Force) who, after confusing discussions, would ask their staff how to word a motion to pass an ordinance. In other words, they did not understand the subject matter enough, to word the motion themselves, so they ask staff to word the motion for them. This astonishes me as I sit in the audience, because instead of tabling the item for further research to answer unanswered questions and understand all elements of the ordinance they force the vote for approval at that meeting.

If you listen to Jerry Coleman, he goes on, at times over an hour, talking about things unrelated to the topic (I remind you, the county pays him $350 an hour of our tax dollars during our current budget crises). He is never interrupted! And he is not staff. He is an outside contractor.

However, lately the speakers are being distracted and ridiculed. While speaking they are interrupted in the middle of their sentences, hurried, told they "are not germane" (they are) and completely intimidated. It is a tactic used to embarrass speakers to make them shy away. I have been treated like this several times by: Mario DiGenaro, Jim Cameron and most recently John Marston.

I resent this, because I may not be speaking to three persons sitting on these boards, but I am speaking to my fellow citizens at these public meetings or watching on T.V.

I am supposed to have the right of freedom of speech, and in those instances when I am badgered, and stopped in mid-sentence, I have lost my right.

I want these boards to respect my right as a citizen and for all citizens who take time to attend these meetings who also want to speak. I want to hear what they have to say.

Regarding Sloan Bashinski's insistence that everyone needs to read the Blue Paper's hatchet job about Weekley and TAMPOA.

Dennis' paper's stories about police malfeasance are worthwhile (though often somewhat overstated) and do help to keep the cops on their toes. And he does expose some corruption here and there. But for those who he's developed a severe attitude toward, he just goes completely overboard. Three people he "hates" more than anybody: Tom Tukey, Julio Avael and Jimmy Weekley. He takes every opportunity to bash any of them, no matter how big a stretch for an excuse to do so. In a previous article he drug out (now private citizen) Avael's emails encouraging people to vote for Weekley and Dennis bashed them both. This week it's Tukey's, as well as the Truman Annex neighborhood's turn.

He dredges up the old "cat thief" thing again since he knows how relevant that is these days. He repeats all the common misconceptions about the Southard Street agreement. Then adds this false statement: "Not surprisingly, Weekley told US1 Radio newsman Bill Becker that he would push for implementation of the controversial 2000 agreement with TAMPOA." I listened to that interview and he said no such thing. He didn't state that he'd "push" for anything. He merely stated that he could see Southard St being closed late at night when the park is closed.(What would that hurt?) That's not anything like the agreement that the city had made and then balked at.

Dennis goes on with: "That’s why we call Jimmy Weekley TAMPOA’s Boy. Make no mistake about it. He is the TAMPOA candidate and he has openly admitted that if elected, he will try to use his position to push the TAMPOA agenda--including restricting traffic on Southard Street and screwing over the residents of Bahama Village." Weekley has neither said nor implied any such thing.

Many in Truman Annex, too, are wary of Jimmy, but since he's not overtly antagonistic against any individual or neighborhood as Morgan has been, it's understandable when many of them lean in Jimmy's direction. Would you vote for a mayor who openly speaks poorly of your neighborhood?

There's really no connection between Jimmy Weekley and TAMPOA except in Dennis' warped imagination. Yet Dennis characterizes the election as being "McPhearson vs TAMPOA". The last I heard, Jimmy got over 3100 votes in the last election, while there are less than 200 registered voters in the Truman Annex (and undoubtedly even less who actually voted).

[teeming with gays] I'm not sure about that, but more than a few times the different places I have traveled when people find out I live in the Keys they say isn't that where Key West is, the town full of gays?

(Ed: the caps are on purpose, it's the only way i can shriek). (Ed: I hear you, but I still had to change case.) Unstable republican: unstable, unstable, how in the hell can you call me unstable? Dammit, I’m not unstable.  I’m very, very, very, very, very stable! You are unstable, you are just a freaking unstable freakmonster. You’re so dammed unstable you can’t even sleep unless your on your left side. I’ll bet your car is so unstable it can only turn left. I’ll bet you can’t even stand on your right foot; that’s how unstable you are. Your furniture is so unstable you have bricks under one leg of both pieces. You’re so unstable you call left turns “clockwise.” Everybody knows you hate NASCAR and why.  You were so unstable when you were a kid that you were always “left” out when the kids chose teams. Everybody knows how messed up and unstable you are. Remember “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey”? I’ll bet you can’t even pick the right side of your nose with your right hand. That’s how unstable you are. Not me, I’m stable. I gotta go, I just heard from Ronnie Reagan. Right now I’m gonna meet with him and a right-wing troll under the old Bahia Honda Bridge. Unstable…huh!

I do not think our Moosette is the marrying kind of gal. It usually doesn't take. Who knows about him, but I hear he's been married about three times already.

[Then I realized that my friend’s computer wasn’t connected to the internet.]

I have done that first thing in the morning when I boot up and forget to switch on the modem.  One of life's signals to hit the caffeine a bit harder.

[Real estate agents] Are they really different than car sales people. They tell the seller they can get this much (and overprice the home) then they tell them to reduce the price. They tell the buyer they are getting a great deal, then they tell the seller they have a pretty good offer if you would reduce the price just a little more. I had a realtor tell me I should reduce the price because of the great profit I was making and didn't have a mortgage. I told the idiot, “I made the investment and was lucky. If you want to give the buyer several thousand off my house cut you commission.” I feel sorry that they have to get jobs like the rest of the world, that's life. They should sell their $50,000 to $75,000 cars if they need money. Houses sell houses--not realtors. They fill out the paper work. (Did p.o. all the realtors?)

Why does Sloan Bashinsky repeatedly refer to his old Birmingham friend by his former religion? Is Sloan referring to his friend’s nation of birth, then, if so, shouldn’t he call him an Israeli?  Is it ok because Sloan’s a Jew and if rappers can call each other n****r then he can call his friends Jew? Or is he just trying to stir the pot?

The republicans have made their choice. They want to keep borrowing for the war and deny our children health care. Go Republicans!

[SCHIP] It’s not lifesaving care that the SCHIP legislation is designed for specifically; it’s the notion that a healthier child is less likely to develop more costly medical care in the future. It’s the “An ounce of prevention” theory. I like it. Republicans don’t. They don’t like it because they hate sharing their wealth now, even if it will make for a better tomorrow for all.

I had lunch on Friday with my friend, Ginger G, who goes from Sacramento to Ontario, CA, every week, Monday thru Thursday, for an IT project she's been working on. The office she works in and the hotel she stays in are 10-20 miles from the fire areas but the atmosphere this week around her has been smoky and overcast. Landing at the Ontario airport last Monday morning was horrific as the Santa Ana winds continued to blow, well over 80-90 mph. Her flight had two aborted landings before finally being able to land for real. Lots of Hail Marys going on.

Her hotel room is normally well-ventilated but there is a layer of dust and grit on all surfaces and bedding. The hotel restaurant is serving meals, but everything, including drinks, is covered by napkins for minimal exposure.

[Telegraph Review] So you don't like what you read here? Then don't read it! This is a forum for (almost) all opinions and we already have a reviewer called ED. You fail.

Also that cake was tacky in the extreme. I mean, when they carved it up do they ask if you want breast or butt? It is probably a good thing that ED did not see fit to post the picture I sent along with my post as you would really had something to complain about.

[Rosy Republican Reply]  My dear Democrat friends, don’t you love it when you’re right, well you are right.  Well, maybe a little right.  In 2007 dollars the national debt is too high, in fact it's the highest it has ever been, but, and it’s a huge but, the insightful way to consider the national debt is to gauge it as a percentage of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP).  Today the national debt is at about 64% of our GDP, this is about the same level that it was in 1957.  I suggest if you’re a fan of Bill Clinton, you’d better be seated.  That level is the same as it was during Clinton’s mid term. Do you know who we owe the money to?  Look out, the sky is falling, oil prices are piercing the sky!  Yep, the prices are too damned high, but, if you adjust today’s oil prices for inflation, they equal the prices in the late 70’s to early 80’s. Did somebody say Carter?  If you champion low oil prices, tell us why we fail to exploit our own national resources, what party promotes drilling and what party is against?  If we fail in Iraq, hold onto your ankles on the oil price issue. Is immigration out of control?  Egad, how can you deny that the Democrat party fought tooth and nail to avoid any reform or tightening of our sieve like borders?  At least the Republicans got us the beginnings of a fence on our Mexican border?  We need to do more.  Civil rights in shambles?  This is an easy wail to make, but it’s impossible to prove, I challenge the poster to explain what American civil rights are in shambles.  Are yours, do you know anyone who has suffered any diminution of their civil rights?  Iraq?  C’mon, even the big 3 networks are reporting that the surge is having success.  Will we win?  I don’t know, I hope so.  I think that the too many Democrats hope we don’t.  You are right on Iran and Syria, both nations do harbor Islamic terrorist.  I guess you’ve been missing the news about our brand new economic sanctions and diplomatic moves against Iran.  I guess you’ve been missing the news about our latest military actions against the Iranian cross border attacks.  I’ve got to admit I have no clue about what we are now doing about Syria.  Sorry.  O.K. what about inflation?  Today inflation is about 3.24%, when Bush took office the inflation rate was about 3.38%.  Now what was the name of the President that was before Bush? Guess what President earned us an inflation rate of 13.5% (Hint: peanut farmer) What about foreclosures?  You are right on this one; the rate is the highest it has been in 50 years.  Why do people go into foreclosure?  Many reasons, the bottom line is that people spend more than they can afford.  Sub prime lenders and aggressive banking practices exploit this human frailty.  Subprime mortgages foreclose at about a rate of 14.5%, regular loans fail rate is about 4.75%.  There is a message here: “don’t spend more dollars that you have”.  Both parties should take heed.  Make sure you take time to sniff the flowers, even if they happen to be roses.

My two
favorite fish in the world are grouper and cod. Both have large segment to their flesh and stay firm when cooked. Dolphin is my least favorite and is very much over rated.

I think Dr Dread should do his “eviling” on the Gang of Three in the County Commission.

Gary Blodgett moved to N.Y., then to Calif where he is touring with a band, last I heard.  Louie moved to N. Carolina.

I smoke and men still find me attractive when I go to bars; so lay off the smokers. I am getting tired of it.

[A man's home isn't his castle] Take 2: The post says nothing about not wanting a house to be built there. It says all the builder had to do was conform (to make like the rest) to the neighborhood; but no, you cannot see a point if someone stuck you with it!

I know a chef who works in Key West (he used to live in Michigan).  I asked him if he cuts out the worms in the grouper fillets and he said no way, it takes too much time. He also said that people don't even notice the cooked worms in the meat. I still am disgusted by grouper, which are nothing more than a bag of interlocking worms covered with KY jelly. You local folks that smoke (and most do) can't taste anything, so you are welcome to all my worm infested fillets. Bon appetite!

Gosh, yesterday’s poster was really down on the country. Yeah, we are in for a rough patch, but one thing you can learn is to invest in oil (and the ride has been just super).  If you want to keep up you have to be alert to what is making money and steer your little pile that way and then the old pile is too heavy to lug around and you can share with the family.  There are plenty of ways to make money, and the way the dividend payments are coming in most of us can't spend it quick enough before Hill and Bill try to take their chunk.  I assure you that the majority of the mega rich have all ready moved the big bucks off shore to keep it from their grasp.  Lower taxes mean more jobs and investment for business in America.  Just keep on clapping at higher taxes on the rich all the way thru the recession that Hills' taxes are going to cause.  Dems all ready have most of  the power of the House and Senate since the last election and we have been making steady progress backwards since then. You just do not realize that the mega rich are not going to change their style of living one iota, but they just hold back on infrastructure investment (less jobs) and don't replace workers who retire or move (less jobs) and don't build that new factory until they get the tax incentives they need (less jobs). Unless you are all ready wealthy no one is going to give it to you so you need a good job to make it!

Who else can you work for (as an independent contractor, person on the line, time clock puncher etc) except rich people.  Without them hiring me years ago to do what I did I wouldn't be down here in the winter fishing.  God Bless all rich and poor alike! The thing we all have to realize is that we need each other.

So I guess this long winded ramble is just to counter the down, down, down poster from yesterday.  From this old hard working sot’s viewpoint, things could not be better, the summers hard work is over and its time to coast thru the winter catching fish in the Keys and having a great laid back time recharging the old batteries.  The war in Iraq is starting to turn the corner, and our brave sons and daughters will be able to slowly turn that country over to an elected democratic government which can choose to do as they wish.  They may choose to go back to the old ways and that is their right, at least we made it so they had a voice.  There are a lot less terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan and it may be, that wherever they are, they will think twice before they come back over here and kill over 3,000 innocent Americans just going about their days work.  Here is a novel idea, lets all pull for the good old USA like in the old days and try to make it the best it can be?  It has been done.

Who is Woody? Does anyone have a picture?

I see someone brings the Realtor's commission back in the picture.  My guess is the person who wrote this is either someone who has no clue about business or is one of the carpet bagger Realtors who will lower themselves to a lower commission.  Let's just go over a common economics lesson here and cover a bit of business as well.

Fact: The Real Estate Market is very low.  Fact:  Real Estate buyers are very rare.  Fact:  The Realtor who represents that rare buyer receives 50% of the 6% commission being paid.

Here’s an example:  Sales are down and a Realtor has a rare buyer.  Two houses are similar and close in price.  Which house does the intelligent person think the Realtor controlling the buyer will show more?  House A is paying 1/2 of a 4% commission to the Realtor who has the buyer.  House B is paying 1/2 of a 6% commission to the Realtor who has the buyer.  How many people guessed house B, which is paying more money?  Still want a 4% discount broker?

There is one exception where too much money may be charged.  Some local Big Pine Key Real Estate firms will tell you they charge 7% and your home will get shown more because of that.  Make sure you ask them if it is a 3.5% split with the Realtor who brings the buyer.  A company will very often will keep 4% and split 3% with the Realtor who brings the buyer.  You are paying more and getting nothing extra in return.  That is an extra 1% for nothing.  If that happens word gets around and their listings actually get shown even less because the buyer's Realtor feels they have been cheated.  If your house is listed with a Realtor at a 7% commission be sure to ask to see the "Agent" version of the MLS print out that shows the commission split as 3.5%.  I'm glad I retired from selling Real Estate.

I have news for you, Bubba; we are already in a recession.

[Film is so obsolete] The only reason film is now obsolete is that people have been dumbed-down to think digital imagery is good, when in fact is sucks compared to the quality of film.

[Hugh burning object over Cudjoe] That ball of fire was most likely the back-end of a Navy jet which now cruise regularly over Cudjoe Key since they have changed their flight pattern. It’s funny that since the ex-head of NAS Key West retired and now works for the City of Key West and has moved or is planning to move to Key West from Cudjoe Key, the flight patterns have been changed? It also may be to help Ed Swift who is planning major development in the area on Key West where the jets used to fly over. I thought the Navy needed permission to change flight routes or did this happen under the table like so many other things.

[SCHIP] This makes me sick. If you can't afford them or you can't control them, you shouldn't have had them period! Don't come knocking on my wallet to feed, house, and insure your horde of mistakes, get fixed.

[trouble with your new link] There is absolutely nothing wrong with your new link. The problem is most people who own computers shouldn't!  Way back when computers and the web started, I prayed people needed to be licensed to have one.

[Screw the property rights of the guy who owned the waterfront land]  Not exactly, the property owner, if he had any class, any honor, any care for others would have built a conforming structure that would not have hampered his neighbors, but like you, he must not give a damn about anything except profit. The Keys are full of mutants like that!

Halloween sky
.

I noticed in your classifieds that someone is giving a 50 pint dehumidifier away free because it doesn't work.  If you scroll down the same person is selling it for $40 claiming it works great. (Ed Take the free one.)

I just love all the horror films on TV these days. Some of them are so bad that I watch them as I would a comedy.

I agree with the comment on the real estate sales percentage in the Keys. Nothing is moving, yet the realtors insist that they get their 6%. I am guessing most of those Lexus-driving women are just dabbling in real estate and don't really need to earn anything as they are living off of their husband's money. Maybe they should open up gift shops in Key West and leave real estate to the professionals.

[Rude awakening] just planed a 365 day trip to see my own country, America. I priced everything both high and low, and through two travel agents who specialize in this type package. I got it all down to the penny, or so I thought. Then my friend showed me his trick. He emailed my itinerary to his cousin in France, who processed it through their people. It was half the cost for the exact same trip. It pisses me off to know an American pays more to see his own country than a foreigner. It sucks!

Sunday October 28, 2007

Grouper in only wormy in the late summer (from the warm water) and usually only the larger fish. all good local cooks will just cut the little buggers out.

Prayers for Captain Dan. The word is he is not doing well. We love you captain.

‘Who to vote for” got it mostly wrong yesterday. We are heading towards inflation, the national debt it the largest ever, we’re mired in an unwinnable war, our national reputation is at an all time low, immigration is out of control, our civil rights are in shambles, housing foreclosures are at an all time record high, oil is approaching a hundred dollars a barrel (just wait until crude prices get reflected into gasoline and heating oil), Iran and Syria are harboring terrorists and we’re fighting the Iraqis.

I guess if you’re looking through rose colored glasses everything does look rosy to a republican.

[Key West Comes First] is Jimmy Weekley’s campaign slogan in this mayoral campaign. Jimmy’s been saying that he made some mistakes in the past. I attended every candidate forum and heard everything Jimmy said. I really believe he needs to explain his mistakes publicly. I know I would do it publicly, if I were in his shoes. The angels Melchizedek would make me do it, if I didn’t do it on my own.

Meanwhile, I really do believe Key West people owe it to themselves, Key West and Jimmy Weekley to locate a hard or online copy of the October 19th issue of Key West the Newspaper, and read the front-page piece entitled “The Race for Mayor: McPherson vs. Tampoa.” They should not do this to be persuaded by Dennis Reeves Cooper to re-elect Morgan McPherson as Key West’s Mayor, which would be about the same as making Monroe County Mayor Mario Di Gennaro and his Marathon and mainstream cronies and Dennis Reeves Cooper Mayor of Key West. Key West people should do it to see why they should not make Jimmy Weekley Mayor of Key West. GoodMorningKeyWest.com

My ex-wife started taking flying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was final, later that same year. She’s limited to a single corn broom.

[Coconut Tele Review] I read through yesterday’s posts and was amazed from the start at the statements made. Who is living here now? Here are five quotes:
1) But if you are quick you can steal a lot of stuff and lower the overall cost of shopping. (From Winn-Dixie)
2) The "teeming with gays" question from just a visitor’s observation. (Fantasy Fest was a gay event it's early days)
3) [Beautiful cake/work of art] Are you a friend of the bride or just retarded? (It was a unique cake, leave it alone)
4) [A man's home isn't his castle any more. “Burn it down!"] (Apparently the guy did not own the waterfront lot!)
5) A friend of mine who winters in the Keys says that grouper are one of the most disgusting fish out there. (True, grouper, hog fish and a few other species can have worms, especially the big ones!)
6) And then I saw this, which explained it all The original Coconut Castaways (from Iowa).

Thieving, homophobic, opinionated, hateful “winter-in-the-keys-wannabees”. if you don't like it the way it is, go home, put on a silly tropical shirt and go eat surf and turf at your local Sizzler.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) staged a fake news conference this week, with agency staff officials, pretending to be reporters, peppering one of their own bosses with decidedly friendly questions about the response to the California fires, the Department of Homeland Security acknowledged Friday.

[SCHIP] We’ve read a lot about health care and socialized medicine here, but it’s hard to figure out just how many kids are deprived of health care because the parents just don’t make enough money to pay for it.  One set of statistics says that the health care needs of 31.1 million kids were covered under Medicaid and another 7 million were covered under the existing SCHIP program during 2006.  That’s about one half of all the kids in the USA.  The new Democrat SCHIP legislation would “extend” coverage to 10 million children and would remove 2 million children from the private health care market at an additional cost of 35 Billion over the next 5 years.  That adds up to 51.1 million kids who would be covered by tax paid medical services.  We’ve got about 73 million American kids, so that’s 68% of all our kids. The Democrats propose to pay for this new entitlement with taxes on tobacco products.  The Herald says that cigars will cost an additional $3 apiece, and cigarettes an additional $1 per pack.  You’ve got to wonder how long the smokers will be around to pay that tax, and who will pay for it after they’re gone.  Frankly, I think it’s a lot of crap, I don’t believe that anywhere near 68% of our families can’t pay for their kids’ medical care.  Do you?  Do you personally know any kid who has been refused life saving care because the parents couldn’t pay?

Does anyone still have a film camera? I’ll bet Kodak wished they’d gotten into the digital business long before they did. Film is so obsolete.

[Who to vote for]  Why did you forget to mention that the housing market is trashed in most parts of the country, oil is over $90 a barrel, world opinion of the U.S. is at an all time low and going lower, good jobs are being exported at a stampede rate in order to boost the corporate bottom line,  and China will probably emerge as the new leading nation sometime in the next 50-100 years?  Fair and balanced as they say, but seldom practice on FOX.

[A man's home isn't his castle]  Is the 2 1/2 story box house on John Silver Rd and painted turquoise?  Maybe your friend should check out the height to see if the code folks measured correctly.

[More bar wisdom] My to-do list consists of women's names and drugs.

[Florida Keys Dragon Boat Club]
I don't know about this group, but the Florida Keys Dragon Breath Club meets anywhere smokers are present.

[A man's home isn't his castle] When you buy a home that has a vacant lot between you and the open water, you just might consider that someone will build on it someday. And that someone usually lives up North and doesn't really care about you view!

Someone asked about the Keys having a reputation about being gay.  I wish that reputation would become true.  The gay community is one of the most upscale classy groups of people around.  They keep their things nice, they are friendly and overall fun to be around.  (For those wondering, no, I'm not gay.)  One question to the person who wrote that comment, what position does your wife like best?  Your first thought was probably, "None of my business" right?  So why is it your business what a gay couple does behind a closed door?  If you don't like it move.

 Live Haunted House Video Feed

The person on Cudjoe who is pissy about a house being built spoiling his view should have purchased the property when it was a vacant lot if they felt that strongly about not having a house on it.  The problem would have been solved.

[I'd only enjoy carving her up]
Another sign of our society’s continuing decline and bragging about it!

Real estate agents still refuse to drop their percentage of sale commission.  That’s funny to me.  A lot of them are now doing lawn care, used car sales and whatever to survive.  We tried to tell you last year to drop your rates and you would not listen, so sink, very deeply. By the way, it will be at least another year before it even starts to rebound--if that soon.  Sometimes it pays to listen to the consumer and make adjustments accordingly; obviously most of you assumed that this could never happen to the real estate business. Therefore you maintained your stubborn "they will pay my rate or else". Well, guess what, it’s "or else" time.

[Animals deserve to be loved] I don't think of my animals as children but they are part of my family and if someone killed on I would gladly beat them to death, call me pathetic.<
