You’ve got to give the Muslim-fundamentalist-terrorist-gorilla plenty of respect. They sure as hell aren’t sneaky; they’ve told us over and over that they intend to destroy us. Their existence and mission has been known for years, every President and many European leaders, since Nixon have experienced their wrath and fire. They have fed and thrived on our lack of resolve to vanquish them. They have benefited immensely by our national largess. They rejoice in and taunt our timidity. They are bright and analytical; they recognize our weaknesses and exploit them. Their solidity and unity of purpose is superior to ours. Their will to prevail is superior to ours. Clinton and Bush have shot their national wads, each will best be judged years from now. I hope that our way of life can continue to exist so that each of us will be able to read their true history, not the rant of a Muslim fundamentalist’s official Sharia Government historian. |

[bomb threat] If, in fact, a bomb threat was made. The Federal Key Deer Refuge will have the F.B.I. looking into It. If a cell phone was used it will be easy to look up who used what at what time. I can only say that not only was it a very dumb thing to do, but there is a very good chance that the Federal Gov. will spend whatever it takes to catch the folks or person involved. There will be jail time and a very big fine. My money is on the Feds. |

My young ones have done dumb things; this is beyond dumb. Not all young people learn from their mistakes; that is why the prisons are full of people that never did learn. One of my sons was on the wrong path and kept getting into more and more trouble. He finally spent one year in jail and it totally turned him around. There is no telling what he might have become if he hadn't gone to jail. |

I am a little confused. I read on a constant basics, of animals being killed here in the Keys; from iguanas being put onto freezers to kill them (Their crime, eating plants, their natural food) Feral Cats being killed because some people don’t like them, to Marsh Rabbits being killed for why?
What those boys did to the
alligator maybe wasn’t right, but when did we start putting human life
above the life of wild animals? There are people out there who have lived
all these years as perfect human beings, so, okay, they have the right to
throw stones I guess. (Just so we never find out their past mistakes and
blow them up.) I just do mot understand why some people want to wreck the
rest of two boys lives for a mistake they made when they were 17 years old.
All I can think of is that you have no life of your own or you are perfect
people, in which case I want to see you walk on water. |

I’d like to write in to support our local service workers because I know many of them and I know their good nature. And I know that we agreed not to humor the cop hater. But I know who he is and thought I would shed some light on him. I will not specifically mention his name. This man attempted to start a dive business in Key West but failed miserably. Ocean Key House impounded his boat because he owed them a lot of money. His house on Privateer in Cudjoe was just foreclosed on by the bank. Now he sits in Columbus, OH writing endless diatribes about cops, big businesses, and other government entities because he blames them for his failed life. To make things worse, he has a boat half-sunk at the Cudjoe house, polluting the whole canal. He has no respect for laws, environment, or any of his neighbors. By the way, the canal-front stilt house is advertised for $299,000! Now, he has nothing better to do than go on an anonymous website 1300 miles from his home and make cowardly postings. He's the same guy who thought Sheriff Roth was to blame for Tom Willi's screw-ups. Truth is, and I'm sure everyone could see this in his numerous posts, he has some screws loose. He does not live here anymore, so I suggest he annoy his new neighbors in Ohio, not us. |

Breezeswept Beach has had a
series of calls to code enforcement for stupid things over the last two
weeks. I have also noticed that same couple who lives on Indies Road about
1/2 way down driving around in the big white pick up with the diesel engine
or in the white Jeep Cherokee driving around a lot over the last two weeks.
The guy is driving and the lady is writing things down on a pad of paper.
What a coincidence? They are back driving around and code enforcement calls
go up. |

![]() There was a bomb threat to the Key Deer Refuge Office last evening. They had the south end of Winn Dixie parking lot cordoned off while the bomb squad made sure the call was a hoax. I'm wondering if someone hates deer enough to do such a stupid thing or maybe it had to do with the feral cat trapping. Who knows what nuts think. |

I would like to submit the following comments on
behalf of Jordan Milo. I do not know the other fellow, but I can speak
for Jordan. I understand what Jordan did when he was 17 years old should not go unpunished, but I do not believe this young man should be marked for the rest of his life. To have his life destroyed as a young man would render no gain for anyone, not Jordan and certainly not society. As a single mother of two boys, who at times in their younger years did dumb things, they have turned out to be fine young men. I can not honestly say this would have been true, if certain people along their road to adulthood had not given them a second chance. Young people learn from their mistakes, if they are not destroyed in the process, it is part of the human growing process. Jordan is a very caring young man, who has finally found his calling in life, and wants nothing more than to serve his country with honor. He has a clean record other than this instance, and has a Great Military Record. I ask that the court take all of this into consideration and find a suitable punishment, and not mark this young man as a felon, which will destroy his entire future. I understand that the folks at Lucky’s Landing are having a big bash on July 15th (Saturday). This is their final day at this waterfront mobile home park and would like to invite all friends and neighbors to attend and celebrate their many years of happy (affordable) living in the keys. There is plenty of parking now and room to tie your boat (if you choose to come by boat). They ask that you bring your own beverages, (ice and grills will be available). Make sure to bring your swim suits. Several tiki huts and outside showers will be there for your use. Come have a good time and remember the "good times". |

Things
I like about the Keys1. Where else can you see a Casino Boat sitting in 4 feet of water that wasn't tugged in there. 2. Around here we call each other Jerk or tell each other "here's your sign" and "you can't fix stupid" but we don't shoot each other. 3. I like the way the county tells us "we may switch to year round water restrictions" but we all know what the next line whispered is, “Pssst, that way we can replace more single family houses with multi unit condos". 4. We don't wear plaid pants here. 5. Bikinis. |

87 The
Hungarian]
It wasn't a headline, it was an inside page story. A picture and a half
column, it said, "Hungarian Families Arrive in Washington D.C. Escape
Russians with Nothing but the Clothes on Their Back" The response was
overwhelming. Poor Marion could not step away from the phone. Dad and
Uncle George had all kinds of job offers. People wanted to bring furniture,
household goods, clothing, food, somebody wanted to donate a car. Marion had
to tell them, since we just arrived, wait a few days until we are in a
place of our own. A bank account was set up with Suburban Trust, and
donations were referred to that account. It was so generous that we were
able to repay the Schattensteins for the bus fares and even had some left
over... |

Size limit for boats in canals. I believe the width must be less than one-third the width of the canal. To allow equal storage on both sides of the canal, and to let other boats pass. Logic also dictates that the length of the boat must be less than the with of the canal to allow for the boat to be turned around. |
|||||||||
|
|
|||||||||

I don't think there are any ordinances for boat sizes in canals. Up until now it's been more or less regulated by the boat's draft. |

Toyota Hybrid
automobiles cause more pollution than most of their tree hugging drivers
know. John Hammerstrom, one of the chief defenders of the Florida Keys
environment not only built his house in an environmentally sensitive
hardwood hammock but drives one of the most polluting cars made, a Toyota
Prius. It just so happens that their nickel batteries have far more harmful
impacts on the earth's environment than people think. Researchers have
discovered that a Hummerhas less environmental impact on the earth's
environment than John Hammerstrom’s Toyota Prius
The batteries that power the Toyota Prius and other Hybrid vehicles come from the Inco Mines in Canada, one of the most polluted places on earth......The Inco mines are responsible for all the acid rain in the upper part of the United states, and all the land within a 100 mile radius of the plant is completely void of all visible foliage. Once again Mr. Hammerstrom has shown his hypocritical status that lies beneath his environmental façade. --govwatch05@comcast.net |

This is a great video on why
people distrust cops. You need to watch the whole thing for the good
part. Here are two more worthless cops. One cop strangles a 13 year old girl
while the other ideally stands by watching. Only the one that strangled the
kids got suspended pending an investigation. The other which is an
accomplish should also be suspended. I wonder if the one got suspended with
pay or not? I'm curious what kind of investigation they are doing? The video
speaks for its self. Excessive force and aggravated assault sounds good. I
would probably have been put in jail and have to post bail for strangling a
little girl like that. Dirty pigs. Yeah yeah cops making your selves look
real good. I would go out on a limb and suggest as a percentage of the
population cops commit more crimes then the general population. They just
don't get caught. And just like in the video their fellow officers just
stand by and let them do it. Sick. Actions speak louder then words. |

I just wanted to give Kudos to Kim Kasey and her sidekick Cowboy Leroy on the afternoon trivia contest on US 1 radio lately. Finally there is some form of entertainment on the afternoon radio. They have taken the show up a notch, and let me say I giggled for 10 minutes straight with some of the answers that were given. The questions have been funny as hell. Keep up the good work you two, and thanks for entertaining an old woman like myself. P.S. Don’t fire the poor boy, he's kind of funny, and probably hot too, in his boots, but I'm old and my standards are not what they used to be. |

[To the Clinton basher] I can see where your confusion is. I think maybe you forgot that we didn’t go into Iraq to stop Muslim violence as you said we went in because Saddam had WMD that gave Saddam the ability to strike America in 45 minutes. As for Clinton helping to end the ethnic cleansing it really doesn’t matter if its Jewish people, Catholic people or Muslims. If we sat back and watched it happen it would have been a true shame. And I didn’t just make up the comment about Bush getting the best military in the worlds history. That claim was made by the field generals when they went before Congress to discuss the progress in Iraq. I hope you’re not implying they lied. It’s the continued occupation that is where the comment about placing our sons and daughters in the middle of a religious war is from. We could claim victory and let the people that have been killing each other for 2000 years keep doing it. |

throwing punches with his right, landing six or seven blows before a store
manager intervened. "I guess he thought I was an easy mark." Barnes is 72. |

[a school board member and charter boat owner just sold his land on Stock Island for 8.4 million dollars. I know no affordable housing will be built there. ] Of course not, but high end condos and maybe a resort, will be. Why, because Stock Island has deep water. Deep water means bigger yachts, and bigger yachts mean bigger bucks! The "affordable shacks" will be built from Bay Point to Big Pine Key, where the junta can push the Stock Island peasants to. Don't kid yourself, this is the plan because we don't have deep waters around the Lower Keys and transportation for the servant personnel will be supplied free to the Key West area. |

[Mercenary defender] May I ask you, did your mother have any smart children? What good it is to make a profit if you're dead. Or in your eyes a soldier has no right to stay alive. The uniformed code of military justice has nothing to do with combat. We all know that is immoral to kill defenseless women and children, they are noncombatants. But you see a kid or a female in a second story window with a rifle or a grenade. Run away, so she can have a go at you later? Sure there are some that are without scruples. Name me a profession that lacks those. I hate to think of my son, or any soldier loosing his life because he had to think about what he should do while looking down the barrel of a rifle held by a kid. I'll shoot a kid if he pointed a bow and arrow at me with intent. |

Homeland
security has a form for illegal immigrants entering our country to
declare a firearm. Isn't that simply hilarious? Like an illegal alien is
going to fill out a form for homeland security stating that he is bringing a
gun to the US. Why is homeland security getting involved with the girls who
are getting harassing phone messages? We have police and FBI for that. I
thought homeland security was for anti-terrorist stuff. But like the family
said the cops weren't doing anything. |

[Men kill animals; it has
always been that way] That's poppycock. I personally know lots of men who do
not kill animals, never have killed an animal, and never would. They also
don't eat them, wear them or have them around for their general amusement
purposes. So, no, that statement is in error. Just as much as there may be
"men" who kill animals, there are also other "men" out there who don't. I
personally think it comes down to compassion and respect for other living
things. It seems to me that there is a general aura of desensitization and
ignorance regarding animals, as demonstrated in the statement at the
beginning of this paragraph. |

It really is fascinating to see the different "takes" that can be made by people viewing the same facts. I've got to confess that I'm surprised by the depth of feeling that some express. I'm also intrigued by how much people are influenced by emotion rather than reason. |

My God, my God, who is the whacko
saying those men should get off their punishment after killing the
alligators by pulling some weeds along side of the road? Are you
freaking nuts? What do you want them to get when they rob the Dions next?
What will you want them to get when they rape a woman leaving a local
establishment? Everyone knows if they get off without jail time, their going
to jump for joy saying, "Look what we did, and we got off!" What can we do
next up on the ladder and see if we can get off with that too? |

[86 The Hungarian] The evening of the 23rd. was designated for a big Christmas Party, presents for everyone. I was looking forward to that. After a nice Christmas type dinner (mom raised many turkeys, but I never had a turkey dinner) we were to go to the post theater to get presents and see the movie White Christmas. The dinner was wonderful I don't know how many turkeys went to turkey heaven, but everybody got a drumstick. Christmas tunes were played at the dining hall and we ate until it ouched. The theater was all decorated in Christmas finery and there were at least a dozen soldiers in beautiful uniforms. The other soldiers wore their dress uniforms too. Speeches were made and I heard several references to Hungarians and freedom and revolution. When the speeches ended the curtain opened and on the stage was the biggest pile of toys that I have ever seen. The Hungarian |

| I'm getting a little confused here. How is it that someone saying how arrogant Jimmy Buffett is considered slander and has their email address printed but someone else calling our current and former President a murderer isn't? Selective editing at it's finest. I think out editor must listen to his Jimmy Buffett CD on his way to Key Deer Bar to see The Moon Dogs. I
was disappointed in one female volunteer at the Blue Hole. After
Wilma I personally reported to a female ranger at the Blue Hole about a
Logger Head Turtle swimming around. The women did nothing. She just went
back to her conversation with someone about a washer and dryer she lost
in the storm. So I then called the turtle rescue center and they too did
nothing or at least never let me know if they did. I have never
understood their complete apathy to the situation. I believe the turtle
died in there. The guys who killed the gator at the Blue Hole should not get more then one year in jail. Depending on how remorseful they are I could go as low as a couple of months and community service cleaning animal habitat. Long Beach is always disgusting with garbage. We should just put them to work cleaning up BPK. In my small mind the biggest crime they committed was killing a wild animal, not even a mammal that was living in a wildlife reserve. Men kill animals; it has always been that way and will always be that way. But there is a time and a place for it and an animal reserve is not the place. We have these reserves to protect animals. They deserve some punishment, but we already have enough men in prison. These two men could possibly be rehabilitated. They are still young and we should try. There are plenty worse things those guys could have done. There are plenty of dead pine trees that could be cut down and removed. This is a smart judge, and he will come up with something good for these guys. |

[And we can't send this scum and his lawyer to a penal colony in Afghanistan why?] Kenneth Glenn Hinson, 48, who had served time for raping a 12-year-old girl, was arrested last year after two teenage girls reported that they had been kidnapped from their bedroom and dragged into a tiny, dungeon-like hole in Hinson's backyard, bound with duct tape and repeatedly raped. Despite the evidence, defense lawyer Rick Hoefer managed to convince a jury in Darlington, S.C., to find Hinson not guilty on all charges in April (based on the girls' inconsistent testimony), and Hinson remains in jail today only on an unrelated gun charge. |

[85 The Hungarian] It was a large dining hall, when we walked in the band started to play a marshal tune (Stars and Stripes Forever) and we all clapped to the beat of the music. When the band played the last note all the soldiers in unison said, "Welcome to America" I don't quite know how to explain it, but I really felt welcomed, tears welled up in my eyes, and I saw dad dabbing at his eyes too. A high ranking officer, with stars on his shoulder made a speech in English that none of us could understand. He made perfect sense when at the end he said in Hungarian, " Isten Hozott " which means '”God has brought you” I know he had something to do with it, but it really was a DC-4. We were invited to dinner; no one had to be asked twice. It was self service just like in Newfoundland and all you could eat. I heard dad make a comment to mom, "Dear if I was ten years younger I would sign up in this Army tomorrow." The Hungarian |

To the person bashing Sheriff Roth for corruption in County government. You are a bit off base with your comments. If you want to place any blame for ignoring various nefarious activities in county government you should look to the County Attorney’s Office or the Office of the State Attorney General. They should be held accountable for investigating any shady deals or illegal, behind the scenes activities of county government individuals. If they find evidence of malfeasance, corruption or illegal activities they would seek indictments and file charges. Most politicians are slick enough to know exactly how far they can go and how much they can get away with before being actually charged with criminal activity. However, the longer the crooks are in office and the more dirty deals they get away with the more bolder they become until, eventually, most get caught with their sticky fingers in the till. (Or, in the case of Bill Clinton, in the intern!) |

[sent yesterday] To Judge Miller:I have lived between Little Torch and Big Pine for the past 15 years. I moved down from Maryland for the tranquil beauty of the laid back atmosphere that these two islands had to offer. They both offer a view of the unique wildlife that lives here in the Keys. If we continue to get rid of that wildlife, no matter how small we think it is, then just how long will it be before there is none left for anyone to see or want to come here for. Indigenous animals that live here in the Keys should be protected and should have strict regulations and penalties for those who go against the law and put those animals in harms way, or worse, kill them. One of these individuals has had a track history with the law, lives on my road, and is a constant hassle for the community. This act that was committed was no surprise that he did it, however it was a surprise as to what was done, but nevertheless, a crime like this should not and cannot go unpunished. What is this teaching the youths of the area, that’s its okay to shoot anything you want to, no matter if protected or not, just join the forces, they’ll protect you and you can get away with anything you do. That’s just ludicrous, if you want more cases like this in your court room, clogging up the system over these kind of situations, then allow them to get off.
We need to set an example of this sort of behavior, and that it won’t be tolerated here in the Keys, or for that matter, anywhere. The youth of today are getting away with too much and we cannot afford to just send them off to the forces and get away with crimes that they committed just because their going to serve. It’s a growing cancer that needs to be rid of whenever a young individual commits a crime, they feel as though they can join up to one of our forces, and escape any penalties for their actions. That is an umbrella that is used and it puts a black spot on our forces, I say build back up the kind of correction policy that was in place years ago, that dealt with people like these two men, and let them feel the consequences of their actions, and not give them more and bigger guns to have in their possession. If any consideration is given to any physic analysis of people who do these types of actions, it is documented that they become much more than what they had started out as, they become habitual offenders, and escalating their actions as well. They were adults when this happened, so treat them like adults, you break the law, now pay the price for doing so, PERIOD. I say, cut the cord, and throw that damned pacifier away! |

Fiends or family of the alligator killers have done an internet search of the story and are doing everything in their power to support the little thugs. Perhaps this explains why the kids acted the way they did. With a lack of discipline, and family supporting their criminal behavior, it's no wonder they acted this way. I've got news for the person minimizing the incident and disputing what happened. They admitted to the crime. The baseball bats were not made up by the newspapers. And just because one of them is serving in the military does not mean he shouldn't be punished for his crimes. And to say the alligator was killed humanely is a joke. There was nothing legal or humane about the whole incident and the kids deserve to be punished harshly. |

[Conservancy
leaders say it's a ritualistic sacrifice]1) A severed goat's head wrapped in a plastic bag was found floating in the Key Largo pen where a newborn dolphin calf died last week. The calf, Wilson, had gained national attention because it was born to a deaf mother, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, rescued in November after being stranded near Vero Beach. The calf died June 15, four days after he was born. 2) The goat's head was in the calf's pen the day he was discovered dead. 3) On the afternoon of June 15, Monroe County Sheriff's Office Officer Gustavo Helago responded to a call from the president of the Marine Mammal Conservancy. 4) The goat's jaw was wired shut, its testicles were hanging from the mouth and the head was wrapped in a plastic bag. There's speculation that the head may be related to a ritual performed in the Afro-Cuban religion, Santeria, which combines both Catholic and African beliefs. “It's called a 'death's head,'...a male with horns, testicles hanging from its mouth,” “It means death to an area or death to a person.” 5) “This kind of thing is not uncommon in the Florida Keys,” said the public information officer with the Sheriff's Office, referring to ritualistic animal slaughter. The initial necropsy showed that the dolphin calf was very healthy at the time of death. The independent investigator said this was the healthiest calf they'd ever seen. What is going on with these marine mammal rescue people? Rumor has it a lowlife former member sits across the canal from this rescue facility and video tapes the goings on. Whoever did this to the goat deserves the same treatment. |

To the bleeding heart for the two "boys" being sentenced for the killing of the Blue Hole gator: all sources have been well considered. It is a shame that the juvenile and the midget were let off with just community service and probation, but evidently their part in the crime was being the driver and lookout. Milo and Goll were, according to the confessions and statements made to the arresting officers, the ones dealing the blows and shots. Yeah, the newspapers said the animal was tortured, and beaten to death with a baseball bat, but again, it came from the confessions and statements made to the officers.
You ask that we tell you the difference in killing this alligator and spearing a fish and eating it? You are one scary person if you can't tell the difference. Spear fishing in most areas is legal; although I feel fishing is a cruel sport, it is still legal. Killing an alligator without a permit, and especially in a federal wildlife refuge, is against the law. Where did you get all the info about the teens in Key Largo? They didn't drag the alligator anywhere. They shot the gator north of Monroe County and brought it back to their home, just for the skin. No one showed up in the courtroom because it never got that far. Maybe there was no evidence to support the charges, no confessions, no statements from witnesses, as there is in this case. It's a shame that they got away with their crime, but they will pay eventually. I guess you are talking about the American Crocodile, Charlie, who was killed by 4 Latinos from Miami, all in their 30's and 40's, by dragging behind a Hummer. I wish I could have been there, but that case looked cut and dried, until the stupid veterinarian that did the necropsy put as the cause of death "cancer." That pretty well shot the prosecution's case apart, but the guys did have to pay $5000.00 in fines, plus probation, plus community service. It should have been much worse punishment, but, unfortunately, each case is different in the eyes of the law. You say one is set to deploy to Baghdad July 15? I personally do not want someone of this mindset defending my country; and one of them got a DUI last July. Did you read their comments on Myspace.com? They have no respect for the laws of this county, state or country. I wonder what the Army will think of them when they find out they pleaded guilty to a third degree felony? So, yeah, I believe all sources have been well considered in this case. These "boys" are adults in the eyes of the law, and they need to be punished. |

Cats in the keys are pests and they serve no purpose in the natural ecosystem or natural environment here on Big Pine. I agree with that statement completely. If they weren't so cute as kittens they would be easier to euthanize. I've been ridding my area of them for a couple of years, and don't have a problem removing them from the ecosystem. [84 The Hungarian] Water, water everywhere and we’d been in the air for hours. The flight was smooth, mom wasn't suffering and that was a plus. After the stewardesses’ served lunch, somebody on the starboard side of the plane said, "I see land!" It was probably the same way aboard the 'Santa Maria' because just about everyone from the port side got up to get a glimpse of their future home. I too crowded to one of the windows, but could only see a grayish snow covered coastline. Mom was one of those who would rather rubberneck after we were on the ground. I do not know how much time had passed. Looking down at the ocean I started to see ships more frequently. From the port side again came the news, "I see a city!" This time there was no rush to the windows, the seat belt light was on and the stewardess wanted everyone to keep their seats. The Hungarian |

Mercenaries are not called mercenaries in Iraq. They all are called sub-contractors. It’s a more evasive name for the American public to swallow than calling the less politically correct “mercenary”. I
am sorry but I am so fed up with these nuts who have nothing to worry about
than trapping and getting rid of feral cats! These cats are a pest,
and they serve no purpose in the natural ecosystem or natural environment
here on Big Pine. To argue that they have some type of inherent value as one
of nature's creatures and therefore should run unchecked and uncontrolled is
absolutely ridiculous. Their existence here has some significant detrimental
side effects. We shouldn't even be arguing or worrying about the way they
are trapped or how they are disposed of unless people’s pets or creatures
that should be here loose on the island are harmed. Enough is enough! Who
gives a crap about how these filthy pests are disposed of? |

The surge will not work. This statement has been made by many including me. Not one decision about this war that has been made by Bush has worked, so why should the surge work? All it does it allow the Iraqis to kill more of our sons and daughters until we leave. The surge is a very bad idea and only delays our exit and gives them more time to kill more Americans. It’s not worth the cost as the end result will be the same. We are eventually leave in defeat as we did in Vietnam; why not leave now? Shame on you Mr Bush! |

[willing to send you a list of articles supporting my statements] I'm not interested in who you are, and you certainly have the right not to disclose information. I'm not going to print a list of links to all of these references, simply because it would take up too much space on The Telegraph’s site, but should you be interested, you'll find some of the articles by Googling "research on Lower Keys marsh rabbits," some on a CD provided by the Refuge used to support their grant application, and some on USFWS's site by following the links to "endangered species." There is a plethora of articles accessible by internet on population viability analysis. Unfortunately, you'll either have to have internet library access or make a trip to the Univ. of Florida for a copy of E. Forys dissertation entitled "Metapopulations of Marsh Rabbits: A Population Viability Analysis of the Lower Keys Marsh Rabbit (Sylvilagus Palustris Hefneri)," along with the associated spin-off articles. On page 26 of her dissertation, she is clear that all of her subsamples were from 6 habitat patches out of a possible 59 patches located throughout the Lower Keys. All were on U.S. Navy land. Five were from Boca Chica and 1 from Saddlebunch. None from BPK, or other Keys with habitat patches, were studied. The fact that it was U.S. Navy land with transient personnel who abandon pets and land that is largely fenced, presents a potentially serious source of error. There are many, many more possible sources of error and bias in the paper (and too numerous and lengthy to go into here) which could affect the outcomes, although this is not uncommon in studies of this nature. Forys addresses many of these which you can read for yourself. A point I was trying to make and that was cut off at the end of my comments was that there are alternative management strategies available to save the marsh rabbit that may be more promising and certainly more humane that killing animals. You'll find these discussed in Forys' research (pp 18-19, 164), although I admit that she prefers the idea of killing animals over these other possibilities. Over the past months, several alternatives and compromises have been presented and been rebuffed. If you have references, links, etc. that are worthwhile, please feel free to email them to me at concernedcitizen54@yahoo.com. I am open to other ideas. By the way, the grant for this project was submitted on a USFWS Intergovernmental Agreement Form, principally to the USFWS and secondarily to USDA Wildlife Services. It really doesn’t matter to which you refer, it all comes out of the same pot; our pockets. By the way, raccoons are being trapped, removed from BPK and turned over to a highly-regarded wild animal advocate who will relocate them. |

This is in regards to the two boys being sentenced for the killing of the
American alligator. All sources need to be well considered before all
the people of the keys go up in arms against them. Consider the midget Theo
Darleck is being let off with a little community service. The minor was let
off with six months of probation. Why should age or height save two when the
other two, Milo and Goll burn at the stake for the actions of four
individuals? Also there is an uproar about the animal being tortured. Who
said the animal was tortured, the newspaper? Can we believe everything
we read in the paper? |

Wetstock 2 sounds great. However the idea of spending a day in shallow water while everyone drinks and pee's around you and lets their dogs swim and of course use the facilities there isn’t that attractive to me. Throw in the millions of sea lice and it loses a bit more of its appeal. Enjoy the day folks and have fun. Think I’m going to wait until its a bit less crowded. Go ahead and enjoy yourselves and for heaven’s sake take a shower when you get home. |

[Hate Bill Clinton]
Nah, I don’t hate Slick Willie, but I sure has hell don’t respect him or
think that he was even a mediocre President. The problem of the delivery of
“military secrets” to the Chinese will continue to vex with us for decades.
The Clinton administration permitted the sale to China of software and
hardware that facilitated the insertion of satellites to orbit. Prior to the
sale, China had no reliable method of orbiting satellites or of accurately
aiming and delivering MRV’d ballistic missiles that can strike the US. They
do now! Now China is a major competitor in the space exploitation race. I
believe that the name of the business that facilitated the delivery
There’s lots more stuff like “Travel Gate” early on in his admin. The wonders of the “Hillary Care” fiasco educated many of us to the dangers of a single payer health care system. How about New Orleans and Katrina; the failure of the levee on the 17th street canal was traced back to its’ construction and the use of substandard techniques and materials on the Clinton watch. In 1993 World Trade Center 1. There’s plenty more, but why waste time and space. The issue of Clintons’ fondness for fellatio, (not that there’s anything wrong with that), is worth some discussion. Fellaltio fondness was not the issue. His actions placed his presidency and the security of this nation at risk. The very fact that he felt forced to lie about it proves that he was aware that his conduct with a paid intern was illegal, (it was) and that he was frightened at the prospect of the accusations being proved. What would have been the consequences if Monica had confided in an agent of a foreign enemy of this country? Now carry it just a tad further. Did Slick Willy lie in a federal investigation? Did that lie tie this country in knots and paralyze his administration? Yep! He got disbarred, big deal. Scooter Libby apparently lied in a federal investigation. He was convicted and sentenced to prison. Public officials shouldn’t lie about anything. Slick Willies admin is history, I don’t hate him, and in fact I might even take him fishing. As a president though, he blew. |

There has been one thing left out of the complaining about the neighbors on Coconut Palm Dr. One of these good neighbors dug up their septic system then took the dirt and spread it on their lawn. I know several people were affected by this. One person has COPD and that person’s life was made very difficult because of this. I have looked into this and found out that using the dirt like that is toxic and is harmful to people. There are young children and elderly people on this street and this wonderful man could have cared less about other people that live on this street. Using human waste like that spreads disease. Don't write in and tell me I'm wrong about this because I checked into it and I used several different resources and they all said the same thing: human waste is not meant to be used as fertilizer. |

According to Val Winter, the assistant state attorney, the sentencing for Milo and Goll's guilty plea has now been set for Tuesday, July 3, at 10AM at the courthouse on Whitehead St. in Key West. He wasn't sure which courtroom it would be in, but it will be by Judge Wayne Miller. We need to fill that courtroom up, so the judge sees that people are tired of these kinds of cases being thrown out with no just punishment. Please try to be there; you don't have to say anything, unless you want to...just be there, wearing some green for unity. Whether you can be there or not, please write a letter to the Honorable Judge Wayne Miller, asking him to not be lenient with these guys (it doesn't matter where you live). Since the sentencing is just a little over one week away, you will need to fax the letter, made out to the judge, to the attention of Val Winter at 305-294-7707. On the cover letter, put "letter to Judge Miller c/o Val Winter". He will make sure the judge gets it in time, before the sentencing. In all correspondence, you should refer to case #CFK06-0000506 (A & B). A is for Goll and B is for Milo.

[Port Pine Heights] Eugene Gordon Kyle III, the attorney's father not grand father named the streets. Eugene, George, and Jim were the three brothers who did the developing. The Kyle's also named streets for family members in subdivisions that they developed on Grassy Key and on Knights Key in Marathon. I grew up spending a lot of time with E.G. III, and while I really enjoyed my time with the family, the first thing that you learned about them was they were not shy about throwing the family's names around. E.G. II was also the first or second president of the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce. |

The true nature of some people was exposed over something totally irrelevant. After a couple of cop cars were parked at a house in Eden Pines, the paranoia of you people really shined. Anyone who knows that woman at that house knows her husband just died. They were friends to many Deputies. Not only have the cops been checking up on her, but since her husband's death that woman has been distributing some of his possessions to the cops that she has no use for, such as old guns. So as you can see, this has nothing to do with video cameras, complaining about neighbors, or any of the other crap you people want to stir. Maybe some of you should mind your own business and not be so nosey. |

[History of Port Pine Heights] As I recall it was the Kyle Bros. who brought us the "North End", I also believe they were the boys who made Knight Key camp ground happen. I think they started it about 50 years ago. I am sure that if I am wrong someone will help me out. For many, many years there was no one on the north end of Big Pine Key. It was ....just there. Like some many things change has been going on for a long time way before W/D and Banks. I can tell you there was very little here when I was a kid. It was nice, but it’s nicer now. Enjoy our Island. It is special and some change was very much needed; of this I am sure. |

Thanks very much for posting your memories of Port Pine Heights. I’ll try to contact the individual you mentioned to see if there is other info that can be shared. I recall having a promotional map for the development which showed the layout and posted prices. Madam Wilma decided that she wanted it more than I did. The map and other pictures I had are now being recycled in a grove of thatch palm and dogwood somewhere east of Key Deer Blvd. If anyone has a copy of that map that I might copy or purchase, or any pictures of anything taken in Port Pine Heights before or shortly after the canals were cut, or any other memories of the Heights, please let me know. I’m Walt, 515-0204. By the way, I think that the reason the name Port Pine Heights came to be used is because the name Short Deer Droppings just wasn’t sexy enough. |

[To the Uninformed Writer of the Feral Cat Trapping Posts and Others] I am sorry, but you are wrong in your guess at my identity. You really have no idea where this opposition to your ignorance is coming from. It is neither professional or graduate. I am just an informed citizen combating false statements. Derisiveness can be called for sometimes to get a point across when the intended recipient seems to be particularly ignorant and uninformed, and this is just a forum where people can speak freely. If you were to actually make these comments to the professionals involved in this project you would get a professional response that would be meant not to offend you and would have the sole objective of getting you to understand the reasoning behind the organizations actions; giving facts, data, and evidence to support them. But guess what...you are not so lucky here...this is by no means a "professional" debate...and I will make fun of your ignorance if I so please. If your background in research is so great, then why o why would you go through all of the trouble to look up an article which supposedly supports you and then provide nothing but dates---no sources, authors, or publications---on which we are suppose to believe that these reports actually do exist. And then on top of that, you can't even understand that the one article was actually arguing against the point you were trying to make (the USFWS's use of bad science was discredited...meaning that accusation is false---yes, that is what you said). I do like the fact that you have offered to show me these articles, if only I give you my email address. I am not an idiot like some people, and would rather that my computer not be infected with a virus or have some creepy stalker after me. I do not see a reason why you could not just post a link to these articles, or at least some form of citation, if they really do exist. The fact is that there are articles supporting and condemning just about everything out there, and I would love to argue with you about the merits of your research if you would only give a few details instead of hiding behind the words "I've done my research" as a substitute for the actually research. I like the snootiness I sensed when you made the comment that your research came from professional biologists, but still gave no more information about where your "information" is actually coming from. You are in no doubt entitled to your opinion on this trapping program. I am simply here to prevent you from posting false information and swaying the public to your views without a glance of the other side of the story. I am sorry if it makes you mad that there is someone out there telling everyone when the stuff you write is wrong. When dealing with an extremely low population of an endangered species it would be stupid not to at least try and use the techniques of estimating population viability. Even if the techniques available presently are limited in their accuracy it is better than standing idly by and watching a species go extinct. My point about you misusing the FWS was not that you were lacking a US in front of it. Did you think I was making sure you were talking about the United States Fish and Wildlife service and not some other country's fish and wildlife service? If so you were poorly mistaken. I was referring to the fact that the USFWS is not the ones trapping here on BPK. It has been contracted out to the USDA Wildlife Services. You speak of other options that supersede the trapping of feral cats yet fail to provide any. That is a cowards way out. If you have a brilliant idea, then share it and try to get the people in charge to listen and see the benefits of your plan over the present course of action. The facts are that the rabbit population has stable habitat and yet it continues to dwindle. All evidence points to predation by feral cats as the leading cause of this continued decline. Controlling cats is the next logical step in the rescue efforts of this species unless you have any better ideas that you have failed to mention. Thankfully, professionals who consider and understand the science and politics behind species protection are in charge of the taxpayers money and not wannabee biologists that have read a few questionable papers. It is perfectly fine to express when you feel the government is handling a situation wrong but it is also perfectly fine for me to tell you you are wrong. And thankfully this is a democracy and crazy people like you are a minority---my sincere thanks go out to the person who posted praise for my work on June 23. If I have yet to mature in the realities of science and the environment than you are a mere twinkle in your daddy's eye. You have yet to prove to me that you have any knowledge in the field. Again, perhaps there are better ways that you could be using this passion for wildlife than complaining on this blog site about a program that is based in sound science and will help the lower keys marsh rabbit. To the other misinformed writer, neither panthers or black bears have ever been a part of the Florida keys ecosystem. Male panthers need a home range of 200 sq miles and there is just not enough land here in the keys to support a viable population, especially with current land development levels. It is the same story with the black bear. Yes it is true that opossums and raccoons are a natural part of this ecosystem but not at the current population levels. A lack of resources once kept populations in check but with a steady supply of food via human waste these animal populations have been able to grow out of control, endangering the lower keys marsh rabbit's survival. Extinction is forever. |

[history of Port Pine Heights] I don’t know any history, but I do remember about thirty years ago driving around and looking at houses wondering how anyone could live in that desolate place. The recipient would be Horn Gyula prime minister from '94 to 98'. How he got elected is a mystery to me. In 1956 the man killed unarmed protesters. When asked a bout it he said, "They were braking the law" Who's law, the Russians? There are eye witnesses to these murders. This man is a traitor, a communist, a collaborator, ass kisser of the Russians. He should not be decorated, but publicly hung with Gyurcsány Ferenc, the current prime minister right next to him. |

An old friend told me he witnessed developers with machinery like bobcats/front end loaders clearing the dense hammock along the west side of Key Deer Blvd., (around 1965, I think he said). Would someone please tell me what in the hell is going on in Eden Pines? From my understanding they have a home-owners association, so why are these neighbors fighting amongst themselves? At the end of a days work, who cares where who parks? To quote the infamous Mr. Rodney King "Can't we all just get along?" I for one would welcome a heavy police presence in my "hood". If this rhetorical is against a little old lady living alone, well, I am sorry, but she needs to be left alone. However, it sounds as if they are young parents (i.e. taking the kids to the bus stop). Is this something you want your kids to remember you by? My mother used to scream obscenities to the neighbors she thought were a threat to our well-being as she walked me to the bus stop. Stand back, and stop and think who the better person is, then become that person. Attitude is 90% of our lives. You can choose to react, or walk away saying a prayer that the other "idiot" gets his. |

If everyone can be so sure that the government is wrong to trap animals on BPK or going to Iraq or most anything else, then how can everyone be sure that the government is correct about global warming? More and more scientists are changing their minds about man causing it. In response to yesterday's long-winded tome regarding feral cat trapping, I'm glad that USF&W is eradicating opossums, if indeed they did catch some down here. They have no place in nature below the 7 Mile Bridge. As for eradicating raccoons in marsh rabbit habitat, if that's what it takes to save the Lower Keys marsh rabbit, then it should be done. P.S. If people hadn't messed up the equation, there would be no need to remove rabbit killers. Keep your cat indoors. |

Nosey lady across the street with nothing else to do but hold onto a longtime vendetta. Do you realize that people use cameras to protect themselves? A lot of your neighbors have cameras (they want to make sure the lady in the house across the street doesn't come on their property). I know you realize that the lady across the street does not need this from you. What kind of person are you? I feel so sorry for you. I never see any cars parked at your house (well that is unless you’re away and then you have quit the party house). You are jealous because the lady across the street has friends and family around her constantly. She is not a lonely old lady like you've become. Also, for the record, if the young lady hits you when she "runs the stop sign" you shouldn't be worried about how our cop friends are going to write up the report; you should be worried that your karma caught up with you and nobody will be around to help you. We all wonder who will be there when we need them. I feel very sorry for you being all alone. Make peace with yourself and your neighbors. You never know who you may need one day. If you would like, I could park on that pretty grass out front of your house so it looks like you have friends. |

It’s becoming clearer. We have no intention of leaving Iraq. Sure the majority of our forces will leave, but as the outgoing commander testified to Congress last week we are there to protect our interests (oil). If we weren’t intending to stay there why are we building the largest embassy in the world in Baghdad? I suspect history will show that we invaded Iraq with the intention of establishing a foothold in the Mideast. After all Bush and Chaney are both oil men. |

To the person with nothing better to do than to dwell on what is happening across the street from her house. Police officers are allowed to drive their vehicles when they are off duty. You are a very paranoid person. What is it that you are hiding behind your own windows? Are you worried the police may find out something they shouldn't about you? Worry about yourself, your family and your children. Where are they? Do you even know? Don't be jealous because the lady across the street has friends and you sit in your house lonely and sad while your whole family has abandoned you. The only thing you have to look forward to everyday is whether or not someone has commented on what you wrote. You need to go contribute to your community…go get a life. Write your daughters a letter and leave the police alone, leave the lady across the street alone, and let it go. Nobody wants to read what you have to say anymore. P.S. Kharma! |

We don't need new ideas. What we need is to implement rational ones that have been self-evident for millennia. Men need to reclaim self-respect, courage and control over their women. That would be a good start. With the family nucleus buttressed, society can and would be secured. If we continue to rot from within, there is no salvation to be had, tactical or otherwise. I know that's easier said than done but it's the sine qua non for a new world to emerge that can withstand the onslaught of barbarian self-righteousness. And yes, I know, that's not the answer we want to hear. |

FWS
has begun trapping feral cats on Big Pine. As one writer commented,
they have managed to capture four raccoons, two possums and one turtle.
Although it has not been published, FWS is eradicating all wildlife that it
traps, except perhaps the turtles. The raccoons are being sent off to a
containment center and the possums have disappeared. All of this is being
done with absolutely no research support and no substantiation, but because
FWS will do what they want to do. It's reminiscent of the "circle burn" that
was done on BPK that killed all the trapped wildlife caught in the burn area
as well as deforesting the area. The only substantial data speaking to the
demise of marsh rabbits relates to the destruction of habitat. So FWS has
destroyed a significant amount of habitat which may never reseed to provide
new native habitat which is needed to support new marsh rabbit warrens. The Marathon and Big Pine Free Press included in the Key West Citizen this morning contained an article about the trapping. FWS claimed that they are posting the trapping areas. If anyone sees any of these notifications, please post it on the Telegraph as my information indicates that they are keeping this strictly secret so that they remain unaccountable. FWS also stated that a report would be published on the results of this program. If you expect honesty and accuracy, don't hold your breath! The most accurate predictor of future behavior is past behavior. |

I don’t care if the cops are parked at the house on Coconut Palm, I just hope they take time to tell that wreck less young lady that lives there to slow down and stop blowing through stop signs in the neighborhood. [Keys Iguanas Fight Back] In a show of solidarity for all the Keys wildlife a Key West Iguana, called Lucky by his friends, demonstrates how they can fight back against the recent harassment and carnage against his kind throughout the Keys.
Barroso said the animal survived the incident, although it is missing part of its tail. "He or she is lucky — he could have fried," he said. The tie line was re-energized at 12:47 p.m., with more than 25,000 customers energized by 1 p.m. All affected Keys Energy customers were re-energized by 1:46 p.m. In an exclusive interview, Lucky said, "I am doing this interview to educate the Humans that this was not an accident, as suggested by the one called Barroso. This is just the beginning of a campaign, by local wildlife, to show that we aren't going to just sit back and watch as one species attempts to control what is our home too." Stay tuned. |

Sheriff Rick Roth is just as much a victim of Tom Willi as the rest of us. Because of Willi's poor management, Roth had to cut the School Resource Officers, several Road Patrol positions, and numerous other expenses within his department that aided in serving this community. Now, this community isn't getting the service it needs and deserves because of it. If you familiarize yourself with the county structure, you'll see it isn't up to the Sheriff to pursue Willi's fumbles. It's up to you, the taxpayers, to get off your asses and demand Willi be fired. [global warming, taxation, drought, etc] There’s a hysterical kafuffle about global warming. Some say it’s man caused, some say it’s natural change, some say we can stop it, some say “can’t be done”. It looks like a rapid rise in the CO2 in the atmosphere began in the mid 1700s. Some blame this CO2 rise as being the “cause” of global warming. They argue that human’s use of carbon fuels will cause the demise of our specie. Let’s look at a different view. The mid 1700s saw the beginning of an incredible rise in the human population of the earth. When the population stats are graphed the rise is virtually vertical. Birth rates soared, infant death dramatically declined, diseases were conquered, and human longevity roared ahead. The population of virtually every nation ran off the charts. Folks, we are up to our hips in us. Maybe, just maybe, the reason that the CO2 has spiked is that there are just too many humans exhaling CO2.
Developers rule!
I don’t think it
can be cured, but I do think it can be slowed. A start would be to stop
federal tax breaks for parents of more than one child. I believe that
existing families should be exempt, but only newly born first born
children should trigger any tax breaks. If you choose to have more
children, you’re on your own, no tax breaks. Couples who elect not to
have children should receive tax relief. Local and state

[79 The Hungarian] The bus ride to Gratz was beautiful. The seats were comfortable and you could lean back, and they were warm and comfortable. The only draw back was that we didn't see anything because it was dark outside. The ride was only ninety miles and it was over very fast. The buses pulled into a complex of buildings and stopped. We were told to get off the buses. As we got off I noticed that the buses were surrounded by a phalanx of soldiers in field grey uniforms blocking all other ways except to the entrance of this one building. I had the same feeling as Jews must have had on arrival to Auschwitz or Buchenwald; a kind of uneasiness on the inside. There was no reason for worry, a pillow, a blanket, and an army cot, waited for everyone inside. I don't remember any more from the rest of the evening because as soon as my head hit the pillow I was asleep. The Hungarian |

For dependability after a hurricane, definitely go with satellite. Once the power goes out the cable is out, but if you have a generator you can have satellite. After having both for many years I am sticking with the satellite. The couple of minutes at a time that I might loose my signal during even the most violent storm is much better than the days at a time that the cable goes out when there is no power. p.s. To insure satellite after a hurricane have a spare dish or take it down for the storm itself. |

[Cable vs Satellite] Our home is on a full service generator. We lost cable along with electricity during the hurricanes two summers ago. The property tax reform is just a way to get us to give up our Save Our Homes 3% protection. The politicians and liberal media have hated us having control over our property taxes. I will keep my Save Our Homes amendment, but I will vote yes at the polls because it does cut 7billion dollars from the bloated, corrupt and spoiled school system. |

[What is better during a hurricane satellite or cable] For
starters, where I live, the cable company gets it's feed
from...satellite. I got a dish, every time a pigeon flies over it I
lose the signal (OK, it's not that bad.) I do, however, lose
signal when the rain clouds are dense enough to block the signal in the
southern skies. You have a better chance of your sat dish working and
getting a signal with your generator power because cable requires
electricity at all its facilities in the chain to give you a feed. A word of caution, don't try to run your plasma or flat panel on your generator as the electricity from them is "not flat" or "clean" so I am told. Generator spikes or surges and could damage your set. A surge protector between the TV and the generator could help, but I ain't gambling. I keep a small 13" standard TV for use with my generator. Hope this helps |

What is better during a hurricane? It is better to leave and watch cable or satellite from a hotel room. OK a real answer: satellites are in space and do not get blown around by wind. [Sheriff Rick Roth] You have been in that post now for more than a decade and for me it's very hard to believe that if you are as intelligent as you claim to be that you can't see what goes on in the Monroe County Government. Maybe you have sat at the round table too long and can't see the forest through the trees. Or does the gang of three have you on their payroll? Something is definitely wrong when a man like Tom Willi covers up one lie with another and everyone who should take notice doesn't, and the whole barrel with the rotten apples just keeps rotting. You should know that corruption is also a crime; or is it your practice to sweep that under the carpet? How is it possible that a county that is in the black and financially sound from one year to the next with no major projects being done be millions in the red? Somebody has been dipping into the till. How much did you get? If this is an insult to your integrity it is meant to be and I hope it really pisses you off. [Tales from the old country-brutality] Some folks have remarked that I have seemed to have had a pleasant childhood, free from the notorious brutality prevalent in the old country. I wish to correct that assumption; my childhood was just as painful as any of my countrymen. One of my most vivid memories was of a cruel game that my brother Gröömpt and I invented called “Beat Karl.” Karl was a fat boy from Alsónémedi who was a bit slow, and rumored to have a small amount of brain damage. We would corner Karl whenever he came into the village and give him a large burlap sack filled with kle’shnaks (goat testicles). Gröömpt and I would then see how many Karl could eat, and then we would try to beat that number. The one who ate the most “Beat Karl” and won the game. In all of my childhood years, we beat Karl only twice--he really loved his kle’shnaks. The brutality part of this story happened when my Mother Krenka found out we were giving away kle’shnaks. She would force my brother and I to watch our saintly Gramma Krevlik get naked and take a bath. I will never forget that torture for as long as I live. As for Karl, he did what he could do best with his background; he went into politics and was mayor of Alsónémedi for many years. |

[77 The Hungarian] Dad stopped and motioned for us to stop too. Ten yards in front of him was a footpath and a funny little man in a hunting getup walked by at a rapid pace. When he spotted us he motioned for us to follow him. Were about to do that when a whole slew of people came marching by carrying all kinds of weird stuff on their backs, like radios, and gramophones with the big funnel. When the last guy came by we attached ourselves to the tail end and followed. After a brisk twenty minute walk the border lay before us. It was a strip of plowed land twenty-five yards wide and on the far side Austrian flags were attached to the trees, just like the bus driver said earlier that day. The funny little man was waiting at the edge of the plowed strip and told us to run across as fast as we could and pointed to our right. A sinister looking guard tower loomed about five hundred yards away. The crossing was a little uphill and mom went first as fast as she could. I could hear her labored breathing as she climbed. | Once again, Tom Willi shows his utter lack of integrity and honesty. And for the sake of Monroe County and the taxpayers who will be called upon to pick up the tab, the sooner the better! --chartrac@bellsouth.net

I have no connection with Key Deer Bar except I live in the neighborhood and would like to have somewhere near to go to for dancing and drinking, occasionally to eat. I see nothing wrong with the local bands blowing their own horn. Lord knows it is better than all that negativity about the Keys. |

[Tales from the old country-my sister] I remember when one of my sisters reached körblenik’, which loosely translates into “breeding age”. My father would brutally interview any of the village boys who wanted to take her out; he had a list of questions that would have embarrassed a perverted longshoreman. Now I need to mention that my sister wasn't a beauty queen; she was ugly as a termite-ridden post due to the rampant inbreeding problem in our country- she was short, fat, about 4 feet tall, had a bulbous, warty nose, stumpy legs, and thick black hair all over her body- But she was one of the few eligible women in town, so men from eight to eighty fought over her like she was the last woman on earth. It seemed that their dating criteria boiled down to what my Gramma Krevlik called dööka ka döinki, which literally means “hole and a heartbeat.” I have experienced a similar situation while living in your Florida Keys, but that is another story that may be addressed later. One incident in the old country that I vividly remember occurred during one of Papa’s probing interviews with a young lad from the nearby village of Alsónémedi. He asked the suitor, Pesco, what he would like to do with his daughter while on the date. Pesco, being not too bright but very straightforward answered, pukuslek' (hump) her. This so angered my father that he picked up Pesco by his hair, looked him right in the eye and screamed, “ If anyone does pukuslek' with my lovely daughter, it will be me. We never saw Pesco again. Rumor has it that he moved to America, settled down with a woman from West Virginia and has a thriving business as a personal injury attorney. They have many ugly children. If you think logically about the results of the study and put them into social perspective you may have a different opinion of the results. Perhaps the reason spending is out of whack for the two holidays is because we have so many single parent households (headed by women). So why spend money on the absent parent? Not! The intention of the study was to get you to spend more if you were going to buy something in the first place by making you feel you that weren't spending enough. Victory to retailers and Wall Street! Our elections are swayed the same way because the same ad agencies make their ads too. Wake up America, you are sheep being lead to social slaughter. |

| [76The Hungarian] Uncle George took the lead, and was the first to descend from the road. I was right behind him. When we were on the side of the hill on the footpath it was easy walking. The snow wasn't deep and Uncle George had big feet, I trod in his footsteps. To our right the hill dropped away fifty yards and started up again. The next hill’s crest was even in height with the footpath, and everywhere there were pine trees. These were planted trees, not a natural forest; you could look down the rows. We’d been walking a half an hour or so at a quick pace, Uncle George had a long stride. The poor sonufabitch at the end of the line was probably running. Behind me was my mother then Steve then dad. I was checking the moss on the trunks of the trees to find which way we were traveling. Moss only grows on the north side. We were heading west. As I glanced to my right on the skyline between the trees, I saw people walking in single file. We were far enough away that we didn't hear their footfalls. I looked again and Christ all Mighty, they were soldiers! The Hungarian | ||||||||||||

[Sloan
Bashinsky is leaving the Keys] Imagine what it’s like for me to
remember my father buying 2 acres on Lower Matecumbe Key in 1963,
running from US 1 to the Atlantic Ocean, with a 4-bedroom, 4-bath main
house, with swimming pool and canal, and a 2-bedroom, 1-bath caretaker’s
cottage, in which lived a resident flats/back country guide and his
wife, a world-record holder for women on permit, who both looked after
the place. 7 percent real estate commission on $2.6 million is just over
three times what my father paid the seller directly — $60,000.Last spring I purchased one acre of mostly wooded land, and what turned out to be a knock-down trailer on Little Torch Key, next to a wildlife refuge, with a ROGO letter on the property, for $375,000, directly from the owner. Over six times what my father paid for his lovely place in 1963. Hard to believe, isn’t it? I’ve been grousing to God lately about why I seemed moved to buy the Little Torch property in the first place, and perhaps this reminiscing has something to do with that. I have loved the Keys since I was 14 years old. I have never felt right living any where else. Yet my dreams last night said for me to leave the Keys and move on to something new. So that’s what I’m going to do, even as I wonder what’s to become of the land on Little Torch. Maybe someone who wants to live next to a wildlife refuge will end up with it. Or maybe it will become part of the refuge by osmosis |

I went to see Injade yesterday after seeing the Key Deer Bar ad here and someone’s comment that they had improved. I’ve never seen them before and I was impressed. I was especially impressed with the harmonies that the girl singer and guitar player made. I think those particular songs might have been originals because I’ve never heard them before. They were the best things they did in the set I heard. I can only repeat what great harmonies those two had. The woman has the best voice I’ve heard in a long while. It was so controlled and pure. No gimmicks at all. The guitar player sure can play that thing too. |

I am really starting to wonder if our Editor doesn't either have a financial interest in Key Deer Bar or play with 40 Foot Sharpie and Injade. All three seem to get a lot of free advertising on this page and Key Deer is always defended if someone dares to say anything bad about it. The band schedule or menu is never mentioned at Tiki Bar, Rob's, Boondocks or any place else. I haven't been to Key Deer in years but am going to have to go back and give it a try with the new management. I went in a few times several years back and was disgusted by the staff, food, clients and atmosphere, but I have heard from people (other than our Editor) that the new crew has really turned it around. I really liked it back in the days when Cynthia owned it. She and Jerry are great people. |

There isn't a prosecutor or police agency anywhere that would entertain the idea of charging someone based on what was said on this web-site. If the person to whom the threat was made really feels threatened and wants to file a police report, go ahead. But to investigate a comment without the so-called victim filing a report is a waste of everyone's time. You can't investigate a harassment charge without a victim who wants to press charges. And frankly, I don't think anyone cares. Everyone knows that the internet is not policed. Therefore, everyone's a tough guy. Besides, the duck killer probably has no idea people are even talking about him. |

The
Hungarian]
On the outskirts of Győr another roadblock was waiting for us. A mean
looking Mongol stepped aboard our bus. This guy could be blindfolded with
dental floss. He had his weapon in his hand waving it all over the place and
was speaking in an unintelligent language on my part. Between the waving and
the few words of Russian he made himself understood that he wanted everyone
off the bus. When everyone was off, he got the paper from the driver and
lined us all up in single file with the help of his comrades, none too
gently either. This mental giant ordered us on board one at a time while he
counted, adgyn, dwa, chitiry, piat, when he got to ten I expected him to
take off his boots. He finally finished the count, and happy with his
success sent us on our way. When I was eighteen and nineteen years old I rode the Greyhound several times from Ft. Campbell, Ky. to Washington D.C., that's 600 miles. I swear this 120 miles seemed longer, the uncomfortable seats and the tension took their toll. Before we entered Sopron there was another road block, but this one went smoothly. Other than the Mongols, there were some local cops that knew some of the passengers and we sailed right on through. All the passengers debussed at the depot, and the five of us rode back to the garage with the driver. He was a friend of dad's and showed us to the driver’s locker room area. The Hungarian |

I like about the Keys.1. The three stripped Keys babes. Yesterdays sunburn line, last weeks brown tan line and "Oh, my God, was I really that white when I left Pennsylvania" line? 2. Newborn Key deer. Full of spots and can jump in the air and spin around and continue spazing-out all in about 10 seconds while running in circles. 3. The huge Jewfish (I'm old school) on the Adolphus Busch wreck. 4. Bahia Honda 5. Taking visitors out to the snorkel balls behind Little Palm Island. 6. My favorite swimming hole. (Nope I'm not telling you where it is). 7. Spoken in my best Fast Times at Ridgemont High voice, “All I need is some flat water, some ice cold brews and some cool Buds. | [speeding cars on Key Deer Blvd]. I agree, but did you ever drive from Big Pine to Key West in the AM, between, say, 4:30AM - 6:00AM, and count how many Key West Police cars (marked) are screaming down US1, tailgating the motorists doing the speed limit, passing in "no passing" zones, etc. That is the "real" pisser! The ones that are supposed to be enforcing are also the problem. Oh wait, they're not in their jurisdiction. Maybe the FHP could get them since I don't think they are part of the bubba system..

[Democrats always back down] Tell that to the citizens of Nagasaki and to the Russians during the Cuban Missile crisis. Can you say "When they do speak there’s no BS?" Democrats may not do well with a dog and pony show, but don’t piss them off. You can also ask Milosevic in Kosovo. His ethnic cleansing plan was put to an abrupt halt by the last Democrat in office. |
|
| [speeding cars] Is this the new fad, to drive with your headlights pressed up against the rear bumper of the car in front of you, driving with the left set of tires on the center line? And I am guessing whether they are looking to see when they can pass, or they are trying to influence the car in front of them to go faster. Speed should be enforced when it is excessive, but they need to add tail-gating to their list of things to enforce. It's too dangerous, and if you have to swerve, where are you going to go? You either are on a bridge, or next to mangroves. And if you are following a semi trailer truck closer than 100 feet you are a certified idiot (I'll keep it clean for now). | |

[Never hurts to refresh one's memory of a pleasure]
In case you are having a rough day, here is a stress management technique
recommended in all the latest psychological journals. Just follow the 7
steps below. The funny thing is that it really does work. 1. Picture yourself lying on your belly on a warm rock that hangs out over a crystal clear stream. 2. Picture yourself with both your hands dangling in the cool running water. 3. Birds are sweetly singing in the cool mountain air. 4. No one knows your secret place. 5. You are in total seclusion from that hectic place called the world. 6. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity. 7. The water is so crystal clear that you can easily make out the face of the person you are holding underwater. |

To those posters that are thanking the truck driver for running over the iguana: you are sick individuals. Anyone that deliberately runs over an animal, of any kind, or thinks it's okay to do so, have major psychological problems. I truly hope that I don't know you or ever meet you. You are on the same low level as the a'holes that killed the alligator and birds in the Blue Hole last year. |

[74 The Hungarian] The bridgehead was lousy with soldiers, Mongol ones. Two T-55 tanks were blocking the bridge and the soldiers were milling around. It took me a while to figure it out. A group of Mongols would line up off to one side of the bridge with the Danube in the background for a posed picture with the front row kneeling and the back row standing, with all their guns of course. The Mongol who got to be in the middle always held a sign painted on poster board and I could only make it out when we got closer. It said The Suez Canal. If these assholes thought that the Danube was the River Nile then they must have thought that St.Gellért mount was a pyramid. I don't think these Mongols had ever been in a city. After the picture was taken, another group would take their place. The Hungarian |

All day yesterday and
all night I kept hearing the sounds of a desperate struggle. In my naiveté I
expected to hear the drone of hundreds of aircraft like I’d seen in the
movies and white parachutes blossoming in the sky bringing us the needed
things. The only airplanes that I heard were Russian planes. They were
probably adjusting artillery fire. Mom heard while she was out that on the
evening of the 3rd. of November a delegation went to the Russian commander
at the airbase at Tököl. The new defense minister Paul Maléter was the head
of the delegation. As soon as the delegation arrived they were arrested. On
the morning of the 5th, at about 9:30, my father came home and
had a worried look on his face. He was definitely not the happy person we
saw on the 29th. I heard him talk to my mother, "Maria, we have to go now!" That got her upset, "What the hell you mean, now?" "Just what I said dear, NOW! This minute, this instant, an hour ago." "What about all our things that both you and I worked for all these years." "Maria, the ÁVÓ is looking for me!" |
