In the July 27 Edition of the News Barometer under "Feds nail two feral cats so far" it reports that, "They have trapped some raccoons and other small animals, all of which have been released". In the recent August 24 edition, the Feds announced, "we have determined that removal of both cats and raccoons from target habitat will be necessary". They report 34 removed so far. So that means the first time they were less than truthful. It is very interesting to know the level of honesty of our public servants, who spend millions and millions of our hard earned tax dollars, is so low.

We need some new management at our local Fish and Wildlife office. --EhriguanaXX@aol.com

Thank you Commissioner Neugent for taking the time to let the general public know what you think and where you are coming from. I want to let you know, the citizens here in Monroe County do appreciate all that you do for our county.

[sex scandal] All Washington politicians, regardless of party affiliation should be forced to leave their gonads in their home states.  If you go back to the '70's the sex scandal history is itself scandalous.  Each political party giggles with glee like foolish little girls when a member of the opposition party gets caught with his/her hand in the…the..well, let's just say the “cookie jar”. Each party revels in the perception that they gain power when the opposition is embarrassed.  Just a little checking though history shows that the shameful "score" is just about even, both in numbers of episodes and in the manner of misbehavior.  Many of these scandals are precipitated by revenge or by the hue and cry of sexual misconduct as political war.  These scandals cost you and me millions of dollars (try to imagine the costs of the Clinton imbroglio).  These sexual misfits deserve the scorn of Dems and Reps alike.  By the way, hi Betty!

[persecuted like Jews] How can a man, who finally got caught with an illegal rental unit, complain about it and then think he’s got it as bad as the Jews in the Holocaust? In the 15 years you’ve been renting illegally, haven’t you ever heard it mentioned that living below flood plane is illegal?

A shout out to all of you. I hear that on 16 Dec thru 1 Jan the state of Florida will have additional police units in the Keys. So I hope everybody takes heed of this warning and be safe out there.
I have noticed that the houses down here are way, way over priced. I don't know how somebody can try and sell a 900 square foot home for $300,000. It just amazes me how these people try to get that much money for a piece-of-crap home. I know it’s the Keys and everything, but I still do not understand how they are trying to sell it for so much. I live in a brand new home (built in 2006) that has over 4,000 sq. ft under air and I paid less than half of what some of these people are asking for there homes. I am even in a gated community. So could someone please explain this concept? I would truly appreciate it.

[Ernest
Hemingway House]
Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Hemingway House every year to see the famous 6-toed cats.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture wants to put the Hemingway cats in cages or inside an electric fence to confine them.  Why don't the Feds grow up and leave the cats alone?  If it's not broken, don't fix it.  Get a life Feds!  I know that cats are easy targets and job security for you all, but please do something worthwhile with our tax dollars instead of harassing the Hemingway House.

The guy on his back in the weeds is yours truly, the other, not quite finished falling down yet, is my monkey, Junebug. We just fell out of the side hack at 80 MPH, neither of us got a scratch. I only had to replace the handlebar on the bike. We won the main event!
I truly feel that it is for the safety for our Military personnel who enter those homes in Iraq. Everyday our US forces are shot at by snipers and every other crazy over there. It is imperative that we continue to do what we are doing! Maybe one day they will get the message.

If you interested in being involved in your community and meeting new people, come join the festivities for an Easter Seals fund raising event and meet some of your local area Realtors at the upcoming Key West Assoc. of Realtors (KWAR) Sept 13th at Century 21 Prestige Realty Group 3718 N. Roosevelt Blvd. Admission is $5 for KWAR members and $7 for non-members. There will be a 50-50 raffle to raise money for Easter Seals and door prizes. Monies raised in Monroe County stays in Monroe County. To quote the great Howard Livingston, "the Margaritas will flow like water; the girls keep getting hotter and hotter". A good time will be had by all. Bring your designated driver. Hope to see you there!

[persecuted like the Jewish people of World War II] What idiot could possible compare an illegal enclosure with the Holocaust?

I just got a call from some telemarketer saying they were from the Florida Highway Patrol and asking for donations. What gives with this crap?  This has got to be a scam!

The wildlife issue on BPK is pretty sickening, from the goons who tortured the alligator to the thugs who are killing our raccoons, possums and cats. To the person questioning the research about the killing of marsh rabbits, I've read all I could find. Most was done in the early 90's and is terribly flawed in it's statistics and it's generalization; as all the studies were done down on Boca Chica and Saddlebunch. There was one, I say again, one account of a raccoon killing a marsh rabbit! Believe the nay-sayers and the vitriolic paranoiacs if you choose, but while the discussion goes on, so does the killing of our wildlife by the Refuge thugs. You can do something about it if you'll just do it. You can file a formal objection with the USDA by going to their website. And you can object to these activities to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Both organizations are financing this farce and both have websites. Man, murdering 38 raccoons for no good reason--that's incredible!

As to the writer who thinks raccoons are being recreated by humans, I doubt you'll find many people on BPK who are into zoosexuality or bestiality. Raccoons are fully capable of reproducing themselves in the wild, given the chance.

Oh, waaaaaaaa!  Quit crying, you crackhead.  If you're a crack user, you're the one who is sick.  I'm not about to feel sorry for you or anyone else who is stupid enough to smoke that shit.  You did it yourself.  It's nobody's fault but your own.

I have always enjoyed the Square Grouper for both lunches and dinners and have never experienced anything except good service and excellent meals.  I can’t believe they have gone to plastic serving dishes as a permanent change.  Perhaps they have had a dishwashing equipment problem and were (are) using plastic until new equipment arrives.  Before criticizing the establishment it might have been a good idea to politely ask a server (or the manager) “what’s up with the plastic plates?”  I’m sure you would have been given an explanation.  I plan to go for lunch to see and ask for myself.

[Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center] They had a summer program on Saturdays for the kids.  We only made it the last Saturday before school started.  We were so impressed. The facility is beautiful and we were approached several times by their personnel who each pointed out something interesting we shouldn’t miss. The kids program was very thorough, it lasted about 3 hours and they had games, and projects, which included a pinecone bird feeder, a “stained glass” bird and a pair of “binoculars” which were used at the end of the class to go bird watching throughout the facility and the kids had to identify 15 birds and they got a beautiful certificate with their names.  The 2 young ladies that hosted the children’s event were great. I agree that it’s a must-see, especially for anyone with children. I suggest you call ahead because if they have something scheduled it’s definitely going to be worth it.

I never saw more rainbows than when I was on Maui in 2000, just before I came to Key West in December of that year. Rainbows on the north side of the island, Kahalui, Paia, and the incredible beach road all the way up to Hana. Rainbows became especially important to me in the fall of 1993, when several truly beautiful rainbow poems fell out of me, which I no longer have. But one small poem I remember:

Black is white,
White is black,
And when they fuse,
Rainbows bloom.

[Why is it that more Republicans are being caught with their pants down in the wrong places than Democrats are]   It’s not that more Republicans are being caught, it’s just that with Democrats it’s so common that no one takes any note of it. Being straight is only a Republican requirement.

[sentencing judge] I think it would be more interesting to lock Mr. Milo and Mr. Vick in a cage and the one that comes out alive would get a reduced sentence.

My property tax appraisal on Big Pine went up around 30%. The home is evidently worth more that I can sell it for. I called the Marathon office to protest, but I got a yawn and a comment "we've heard that before."  I guess the Keys governmental gurus are hedging their bets to guard against revenue losses if they revise the tax plans. It’s not fair guys. Quit spending so much money and give us a break!

Your picture of the Raccoon humping the dog should please the diversity lovers down here. I wonder what the offspring will look like?

You have to give the right-wing-nut credit for one thing. He, at least, admitted he lied thru his teeth about his made up facts concerning insurance rates jumping $300-$400 a year. That makes his postings nothing but fairy tales. And for awhile there we thought you were fun to debate with. Bye, bye Pinocchio. We knew you were lying all along.

Who can't get health care?  Anybody who wants it gets it.  It's just that they don't all pay for it or bother with insurance.  No one is turned away.

A German woman has started a business making clothes for customers from the hair of their pet dogs. Bettina Menkhoff, 50, from Stoetze in Germany makes scarves, gloves and other clothes and sells them over the internet at www.jolly-fellows.de  She said: "I got the idea after I bought a pair of socks made from Bobtail-wool. I have four Beardie-Collies myself and started to yarn their hair. It only works when the hair is longer than four centimeters though. "I regularly brush my dogs and keep the hair for processing. It's warmer than sheep wool." She added: "The best business though is with customers who send me the hairs of their dog to make clothes for them."

I am talking about the gay girl who wears glasses. And I am a women, not a man! I do not see anything wrong with meeting her, I would like to meet her girlfriend too. I mean no harm. Like I said, I just moved here and I would like to meet some people.

How come you changed the link to the Sheriff website? The new one sucks! (Ed: If others think so, I can change it back. Please let us know.)

It’s going to be real tough to elect anybody to anything if they must first be verified free of any kinky sex fetishes.  Very seldom anyone 'fesses up voluntarily.  Most often it's a nasty surprise that surfaces unexpectedly after they become public figures.

Is the Key Deer Bar really closed? I miss the Keys and all it’s drama.

Does anybody have a great seafood salad recipe like the way Monte's used to make with that imitation crabmeat?

[Jordan Milo is really a sergeant] In no way what he did to a lizard would affect my desire for him to be my son or daughter's leader in a combat zone. What kind of soldier and leader he is would!

The Aurigid meteor shower could put on a big show Sept. 1 before dawn. Although the little-known Aurigids often produce little or no display, conditions are favorable this year for a good or even an extraordinary burst of meteors. People in far-western North America will have the best chance to see them.

[Redneck Vasectomy] A Southern couple, both certified rednecks, had nine children. They went to the doctor to see about getting the husband "fixed”. The doctor gladly started the required procedure and asked them what finally made them make the decision--why after nine children, would they choose to do this. The husband replied that they had read in a recent article that one out of every ten children being born in the United States was Mexican or Cuban, and they did not want to take a chance  with another baby because neither of them could speak Spanish.

[National Health Insurance] Sorry, that was not my intent to sway any statistics to fit any agenda. I just want to show it costs a great amount to have universal health care. It is not all the same for everyone with universal health care either. If you can pay more, you also get more. For instance, a friend of mine who is Canadian (of which I am not) had prostate cancer, he paid an extra $1800 dollars to a Doctor in the universal health care system of Canada to see if the Doctor could save the bundle of nerves (look that one up and see what it does for the male), but it did not help. Several Doctors here in Canada, do come to the States to practice medicine and would prefer to practice medicine in the States.

You’re right, there are a lot of New Yorker's here in the Keys and have been for many years. There are a lot of retired NYPD and NYFD.

Thursday August 30, 2007

All right, I can’t help it. I am so nosy, it’s killing me. What's the real story behind ATF closing Key Deer Bar and Grill? Is it because they are buying booze from retail outlets and not the wholesalers? Is it because they allow smoking inside? Is it because they are running it like a night club, serving booze without serving food? Is it because of the workers not getting paid? There is so much stuff going around I would like to know the bottom line even though its none of my business. I fall so short, I must work on minding my own business, but now I just got to know what's up.

Don't believe what you read in newspapers, except the News-Barometer. What I said at the end of the Hometown! PAC forum during my allotted minute and a half to close was that I would not ask for votes but would speak to the issues. I then spoke to the Truman Waterfront elder retirement project, which I said I flat oppose because it requires the city giving land to a developer for ninety-nine years, and the housing will be available to people all the way up to Marathon, all the way up to New Jersey even, and will not be limited to Key West elder residents who already don't have enough housing.

I then spoke to affordable housing and said Habitat For Humanity and Bahama Land Trust are doing something with it and are not in it for profit, and are not being curried by the City even though they are the leaders in the Keys with affordable housing. Believe it or not, neither the Truman Waterfront elder project or affordable housing were put to the candidates by the panel. I then said if people are satisfied with how things are going, then they don't want to vote for me, because I come from outside the box and I don't like how things are going and it will be very different if I am elected. That brought a lot of laughter. I ended my allotted time steering the audience toward www.goodmorningkeywest.com , if they really wanted to get to know me. I said I swiped the name from Robin Williams and Good Morning Vietnam, and it was about the same attitude. That brought a big chuckle. I repeated the name of the website. Then I was out of time, and there was a big applause.

I had begun it all, when I first got to speak, to say what I felt would help Key West, by saying Key West is a carnival; that the Lou Harris survey earlier this year discovered that the number one reason people gave for coming to Key West is for the night life. I said we need to exaggerate that, play on it. I said we should turn Key West into the pirate capitol of America. It would draw people from all over the world. Like I said to begin with, don't trust everything you read in the newspapers. I am running to win. Just not like politicians go about it. I'm not a politician. I don't tell people to vote for me. I speak to the issues and let people decide if what they hear makes them want to vote for me. Everything I post in Today's Cock-a-doodle-doo is part of the campaign. The forums and media interviews are part of the campaign. I'm sticking out like an ET at a Southern Baptist convention.

Thank you, ladies, for the advice on the hormones.  Thanks also to my husband who responded that I should put it over my mouth.  You know what that means, honey.

So no health care for people is supposed to be better then some health care for all? Gee, glad all the jobs at NASA are taken.

Comparing America to Canada is like comparing Iraq to Afghanistan. It doesn’t work unless you want to "sway" statistics to suit your agenda.

[Just hang out with gay girl] Wrong! If she already has a girlfriend there’s no room for you. Three’s a crowd when love is in the equation. Butt out.

[Leona Helmsley left 12 million dollars to her little doggie] And completely left out two of her grandchildren, which is probably the kindest thing she ever did.

Yes, the refuge is killing raccoons.  Last count 34.  It is a crime.  Our great protectors of wildlife are killing a species in its native habitat because their feral cat scheme didn’t produce. They are not bothered by the raccoons that may really be a threat.  They go after the wild ones that live in the woods.  USFWS are an embarrassment to this community.  What they are doing is immoral and should be illegal.  They are no better than the creeps out west shooting wolves and prairie dogs or the poachers of alligators and birds.  Maybe the fools just can’t find the flipping rabbits.  They are nocturnal and there workday ends at 5:00 sharp.  If they would read their own literature they may find that the more they kill the more the raccoons will reproduce to keep their family groups intact.  A never ending circle of disaster for all.

This is it folks, our final chance at showing our outrage to the premeditated blinding and bludgeoning of the Blue Hole alligator.  Our chance to voice our opinion that killing birds with a bb-gun to lure the alligator to its death is not just “boys being boys”.

The defense attorneys are trying very hard to put the incident in a different light.  Goll's attorney has painted the duo of Timothy Goll and Jordan Milo as "basically Florida Keys boys who go fishing and hunting.  They thought it was a fishing violation." (July 4th Keynoter Article )

It is important not to let them water down the severity of the premeditated acts.  Even though these men have only been charged and pled guilty to the charge of alligator poaching, this is more importantly an animal cruelty case.  This is a very important issue that could set a precedent on cases like this.

This case has been drug out for 17 months in an attempt to wear down our opposition.  It is very important that we make a strong showing, at this final sentencing, so the Judge sees that we are still here and we are still calling for justice.   The sentencing has now been set for Friday, September 7, 2007, at 8:45AM, at the Whitehead St. courthouse in Key West.  It will be in Courtroom B, on the 3rd floor, with sentencing by Judge Mark Jones.  Wear your green.  Bring a friend.  Let's fill the room! Please RSVP your intentions to naturelover@favorfloridakeys.com

If you cannot make it, mail or fax another letter to the newly appointed Judge Jones.  Refer to Case #CFK06-0000506 A & B (Timothy Goll and Jordan Milo) on any correspondence.  His address is    The Honorable Mark H. Jones 502 Whitehead St., 3rd Floor Key West, FL  33040 305-292-3422 FAX: 305-295-3625

Whoop, Whoop “Pull up!” Whoop, Whoop “Giraffe! Too low, Giraffe....too low Giraffe. Oh, shit"

I sure hope the responses about raccoons aren't true! If so, the only wildlife left on BPK will be rabbits and deer. Everything else has been defined as invasive exotic and targeted for destruction. We live on about 2 acres, keeping 1 acre as natural habitat. We have raccoons on that lot and we have neuter/spayed, vaccinated cats on the lot our home is located on. We have a couple of large iguanas who lay eggs every year, then we see a few small iguanas, then all we see are the two large iguanas again. We have extensive fenced (key deer) tropical gardens which have seen absolutely no damage from the iguanas.

For several years, everything seems to have balanced out.  Imagine that! On top of that, we have found only one dead bird on our property in the past. And still, the "experts" at the Refuge, the Audubon Society, etc. insist that the invasive exotics must be killed, except of course, the living creatures they like. Swell people.

By the way, that same individual in the F&W truck with the animal carriers in the back about ran us over while running  the stop sign at Second and Wilder (didn't even slow down), sped off down Wilder, then careened on to their property. It's reassuring to know we're in such safe, capable hands.

[17 children] I find this ridiculous. The father should learn to keep that thing in his pocket and the world will be a better place. Slide Show

[some moon shots] Thanks for the great pictures!  I didn't get to see it here, but I did try.

If that is the preppy guy from Boondocks and hopefully, you were talking about me, I am not gay and would like to meet you too.  We talked about dogs once at the joint across the street. I thought you were married and I don't mess with men who are owned.

When you stuff a turkey with a duck and stuff a duck with a chicken--you call it Turducken, and even thought its first syllable can be a little off-putting, it's a tasty thing!

Judging by all the Rudy rants, there seems to be a lot of New Yorkers in the Keys. I thought those folks all lived in condos with names like Del  Boca Vista. What the hell are they doing in the Keys anyway?

You’re saying that because you can afford health insurance and don’t like waiting in a Doctor’s office that no one should have universal health care?

Gay Senator Larry Craig, Michael Vick, the Kennedy's and all other rich bastards prove that money buys happiness, freedom, and judges!

Funny how often the “Jesus defense” appears at the threshold of the prison gate.

[Worlds Fair being held Zaragosa, Spain.] Gee, everybody can go there and get captured by the Ragheads. Spain is now about 75% Moslem and growing. It will be the next Iraq/Iran front in a year.

While yellowtail fishing on the outside edge of the reef off Big Pine Key, this young Boy Scout caught this fine and very under-rated Barracuda. The young man was using 15lb test line and a monofilament leader. Everything had to go just right to land this bad boy. Job well done; and a fine mess of yellow tail to boot. The fish was released unharmed and no worse for the ware.

You are a sick, sick person if you can call yourself a person. Not caring if a family member had a crack problem and wanting them to die. What is wrong with you? Were you beat up a lot when you were little? I now feel sorry for you. You need help more then anyone. I guess you have never done anything you were sorry for. I guess I will just call you Mr Wonderful. Please find yourself help and God bless your family because they will need it having you around.

[Justice] I hope the sentencing judge in the Milo alligator killings follows the Vick dog fighting case.  Both crimes are equally as serious and both should carry jail time.

Mr. Milo and Mr. Vick should be locked in a cage with an alligator and one of Vick's fighting dogs.

[Raccoons] If there is an overabundance of raccoons in marsh rabbit habitat, they should be removed.  It is people who are responsible for the raccoon birth rate explosion.

[Senator Craig] Why is it that more Republicans are being caught with their pants down in the wrong places than Democrats are?

How come Bush is planning on asking for $50 billion dollars for continuing the Iraq war before the Generals give their report? It seems he’s asking everyone to not do anything until the report comes out, yet he’s already planning on no withdraws and no Iraqi accountability. What a sham.

How about that creep arrested in KW for exposing himself to children. He has been arrested for the same thing many times and they still let him roam free.

Love, Magic and Pirates, Mostly. Yesterday morning, I received an email at keysmyhome@hotmail.com  from the producer of a radio show out of Indianapolis, Indiana, close to where my last wife is from and now lives.

Only the night before, I’d seen “Stardust” at Regal Cinema, about a magic world that parallels a community in old England. A young man with a father from the English community and a mother from the magic world goes into the magic world and meets and falls in love with a woman who is a star that came to this world like a meteor. Literally. He’s in love with a girl in the English community, but of course, there would be no story to tell, if it remains that way. A great deal of intrigue and plenty of good and bad men and women with somewhat different faculties than mere human beings enjoy...GoodMorningKeyWest.com

After 15 years Code enforcement are after me. Florida Keys stilt homeowners with under house apartments are getting persecuted like the Jewish people of World War II. Everything they and their families have worked for all their lives are being taken away by Code enforcement, destroying our homes and livelihood.

If Jordan Milo is really a sergeant, this is a sad reflection on the standards of our modern volunteer army. The cruelty is bad enough. His lack of judgment in doing such a thing is perhaps even more disturbing. Assuming he is a sergeant in the military, would you want this young man in charge of your son or daughter in a combat situation? I think not.

[Picture of the moon from an airplane
] Rarely do all the factors line up...lighting, distance, clarity, composition, etc. so that a terrific picture is taken.

[Universal health care] I'm confused by the Hillary hater who says come on up to Canada, but then says he lives in the USA.  Whichever it is, I've been to every one of the countries he indicates are bad places to live. I have met happy, fun and outgoing people in each of them who are proud of their heritage and love their respective countries.  They don't need a huge military because Uncle Sucker takes care of that with our tax dollars.  Japan is a great example of building an economic powerhouse while we have defended them for the past 62 years.

I'm happy that we both can afford our expensive health insurance, but don't you have any sympathy for the millions around you who can't? (On second thought, don't go there.)  We may have “got ours” but I don't mind a little redistribution of tax revenues--more to the needs at home and less to boondoggles like Iraq.  Notice that I didn't propose taking one extra cent out of your stingy pocket with a tax increase.

Ever watch a rabbit run? Ever watch a rabbit trick a dog and circle back on the trail and hear the dog in the distance yelping, having lost the scent? Have you ever seen a raccoon run?  So what do these raccoons do? Sneak up on rabbits and pounce?

I know after all these years of animal study, all these Universities studying wildlife, there must be a study to back up the Wildlife Refuge's notion that these Keys Raccoons are rabbit hunters. Where is the study? Show it to us.

In the old days Indians, settlers and sailors would do a burn on the upwind side of the islands and wait on the down wind side and catch the deer, raccoons, rabbits and whatever other protein came out of the fire. Hunger was the driving force. The hunters moved on.

Now we have autos killing raccoons at a fairly good rate though not fast enough for the “Refuge” people. The Wildlife “refuge” now has become hunters with traps for the wildlife that have been here in the lower keys since the melt of the ice age 6-8 thousand years ago.  The animals have adapted to vegetation and environment, the small and tough surviving.

The Great White Heron Wildlife Refuge and The Key West Wildlife Refuge are just that. They are set up for protecting the environment, wildlife and keeping exotic species from overwhelming the lands around us (who are the most exotic of all).

How many people got sea lice at Picnic Island this past weekend?

[Raccoons] I thought the raccoons were being killed by a virus. Isn’t that what I’ve read about six months ago? What...they recovered from the deadly virus so they are now being killed by those that are supposed to protect them? This conservation thing is really confusing.

In his first major foreign policy speech as president, Nicolas Sarkozy of France said Monday that Iran could be attacked militarily if it did not live up to its international obligations to curb its nuclear program.

[$350-$400 per mo. health care]  When you’re partially right, you’re partially right.  The estimate I posted was nothing more than my wild ass guess.  That guess was my belief as to what the additional tax burden for the average person might be under Hills’ Health Care Plan.  On further reflection I concede that my guess was probably low, very, very low.  It’s kind of hard to make a really sharp guess because we haven’t been told what her plan might be, or what she estimates the costs might be.  I suppose she’s just been too busy.  You’re absolutely right about the government pissing away money.  As I recall the Dems promised to do away with “set asides”, aka “earmarks” aka “pork barrel projects”.  I don’t recall any Dem sponsored legislation about that, do you?

When you’re wrong, you’re wrong.  I really hate to be disagreeable, but we already have tax payer paid health care in place.  After all, Medicaid provides tax payer paid health care services for the poor.  Remember Medicare, tax payer paid health care for old farts?  Isn’t it true that an emergency room cannot deny you emergency care even if you can’t pay?

Kudos to the poster who wrote so well of Canada’s health care system, it’s a real eye opener and an accurate forecast of what’s in store for you and I if we adopt their system.

I believe that many people simply don’t want to pay the freight for their own health care.  These people want some one else to pay their health care costs.  Far too many folks choose to spend their bucks on new cars, boats, cell phones, plasma TV’s, etc, rather than spending their bucks on health care insurance.  Admit it, how many people do you know who live high on the hog, make good bucks, but don’t bother with health insurance?  These folks should live with the consequences of their decisions; you and I shouldn’t be forced to subsidize their life style by paying for their health care.  The issue of reducing health care costs is an entirely different beast that needs discussion.

By the way, it's a damned shame about the market, employment, inflation, and that damned surge isn't it!

[Senator Craig] The Republican Party, the holier-then-thou self proclaimed guardians of our morality and patriotism, have once again shown their true colors.  It turns out they are not much different then those of any other population.

There was a big battle yesterday between Shia fighting Shia. 50 people were killed and a bunch more wounded.

They can’t even agree with themselves, how are they supposed to get along with their historical enemies? The US should pull out now! This is a political fiasco with our soldiers dying for no reason, but Bush’s ego. He’s a madman.

I am neither friend nor foe to Tom Willi. I had a similar position for eleven years so I have an understanding of his very tough job. The positive poster from the other day did not do Willi a service by saying he called Bill Becker “a political assassin and rumor monger.” Willi’s words were better chosen and softer. The dilemma of a show like Becker’s is the conflict between “entertainment” and “local news.” When Sonny was on Friday mornings we all knew it was the former.

Disgruntled employees are often too quick to go public and the Citizen and Becker do thrive on it. An appropriate and thoughtful response by Willi cannot fit into the Becker radio format.

The Grusin’s Sunday morning talk show is a better format to discuss county government and I hope it continues.

As to terminations and firings, the press should keep their noses out it until the processes run their course. There are built in protections that take time. It’s called due process. If the county gets slapped for wrongful termination, print it. If not, the county was correct in their decision.

The “cost overrun” issues are another matter. I would love to hear Willi explain the management and oversight in his administration of construction projects. The press should be vigilant.

Conakry anchorage, Guinea. About 30 robbers armed with guns boarded a chemical tanker. Crew locked all access to ship and attempted to contact local authorities for help but failed to get any response.  Robbers later left the ship. Nothing stolen and no harm to crew / ship.  Ship weighed anchor and proceeded to high seas for safety.

(Ed: Bigpinekey.com’s sister website PirateDocuments.com has a link to Modern Piracy that updates piracy around the world every week. Most piracy is against freighters and tankers because the pirates know there are sizeable amounts of American dollars in the safe. The captains have to keep cash because many places they travel to only accept cash and it has to be in American dollars.)

The Grand Jury says there was mis-management in the KW Airport construction. Duh! What happened to the County’s project director, Larry Chalmers, who was always raising a fuss about the contractor not doing what was supposed to be done? He seemed to be the only guy looking out for our interests. Where is he?

I’ve been an avid boater down here most of my long life, but only realized yesterday the vast differences in tides in the keys. Yesterday’s full moon high tide was almost three feet high in Marathon (Sombrero Key) and Islamorada’s Whale Harbor high tide was less than a foot.

Mr. Willi should look up the definition of professionalism. He certainly does not know the meaning of the word. -- Abbylehighacres@aol.com

The Queen of Mean, Leona Helmsley left 12 million dollars to her little doggie. Awww, how cute!

You have to love the man that worships at the alter of Rudy. He states "The firefighters hate him because he’s a republican". What an asinine comment to make. He acts like the firefighters are not smart enough to support someone they really feel helps them in the tough jobs they do. How insulting. You have to love the way he tells us all "why we really support someone". Chances are he’s the same person that picked a number out of thin air and said "If Hillary is elected she’s going to raise your insurance by $300 - $400 a month".

If you want people with that mindset running this country vote republican. If you think Firefighters, Policemen and Teachers are smart enough to make up their own minds vote Democrat or for an independent candidate. Don’t be fooled again.

[
Refuge killing raccoons] I don't know how they handle it now, but a few years ago my sister, who was living on Little Torch, got a Have a Heart trap because she was having trouble with raccoons. Well, she caught one the first night then called the refuge to ask what she was supposed to do with it. A guy went over to her house and shot the raccoon in the trap with a .22 which pretty much horrified her. She got rid of the trap and learned to live with them until she went back to America.

I was sorry to read the Gay girl at Boondocks has a girlfriend. Nothing wrong with looking! I still would like to meet her. Maybe we could just hang out? I guess I should just introduce myself to her the next time I see her there.

[who will receive more jail time] At least the dog killer was man enough to admit to his crime. What was Milo Jordan’s defense again? Oh, yea, he just thought it was a minor fishing violation which made it all ok.

Here are some moon shots taken from our porch in Ramrod Key. from 8/28/07 between 5 AM and 6 AM.

[
Report illegal drugs] This works well in theory until you report it and the cops say they have to see it to take any action.

Those who are lucky enough to be elected to office, as public servants, have an obligation to the media which disperses responses to the residents and voters so that they understand the positions of their elected officials. During the course of the term you are elected to serve, voters and residents really get to know exactly what you stand for. So many times someone is elected, based upon their campaign rhetoric, and not what they truly represent in their votes on the commission.

The Mayor and the County Administrator have the opportunity to clarify and correct any misrepresentation that Mr. Becker, Mr. Tuell or Mr. Kahn may state. However, when you are unwilling to go on the air and answer questions and/or define or defend yourself the listeners have a right to ask, why?

Why is that person not prepared to clarify why he/she feels that they have been misrepresented? I’ve listened to Mr. Willi and he clearly can defend himself (he may create more questions than answers, but he certainly has the ability to speak his mind). For any elected official to avoid the press/media creates questions of why Commissioner McCoy, whether you like him or not, is the epitome of being able to give and take in a question and answer situation. Yea, Becker can twist your shorts and the press can have reporters who twist and tangle words and quotes, however, they have a tough job.

We, as elected officials, have tough jobs, but the public has a right to know. So act like the big person you’re supposed to be; the one who ran for office. If you’re honest and straightforward with the folks you’ve got no problem. Come on Tom, Mario, Dixie – it’s going to be election time here shortly, lets here what you’ve got to say.  --Neugent-George@monroecounty-fl.gov

NYFD union hatred for Rudy: C'mon, we all know that the FDNY union hated Rudy G long before 9/11. You're wrong about the search for WTC victim remains. The search for WTC remains was never “called off”. During the search for body parts a vault containing gold was uncovered. By the time the gold was found thousands of body parts had been recovered.T here is nothing, repeat nothing to that suggests that the gold recovery had any affect on remains recovery timetable or methods. This is a fiction that probably springs from the union. It's true that the recovery method was changed. The hand/forensic search ended and machine recovery was begun. By the time the forensic recovery protocol was changed, there was zero chance of finding any survivor.

Fires in the rubble had ensured that sorry fact. Forensic searching for body parts requires examining virtually every item found to determine its’ origin. This type of search at that site placed the searchers at risk of immediate injury and  to exposure to biologic and perhaps environmental hazard. There is no doubt that had the forensic body part search method continued, the search at ground zero would have continued for years. Nonetheless the debris collected by heavy machinery at ground zero was hand searched for body parts at the Staten Island disposal site. Thousands of body parts were recovered and identified during this process. This process located body parts much quicker than hand/forensic searching could have. Please consider some of the facts available to the managing entity: 1.] There is no chance of finding survivors. 2.] The forensic search protocol is endangering the searchers. 3.] The rubble field may pose environmental hazard to the searchers.
4.] The site is a grim reminder of the efficiency of the terrorist attackers.

The managing entity was NYC’s Department of Design and Construction. The New York City Fire Department was designated as the lead agency for finding remains. According to AP, 10/24/06, Chief of Department Sal Cassano said in a statement that the FDNY "had final sign-off on areas where the recovery effort was deemed complete, and at no time was pressured to say otherwise.".

It is truly tragic that not every piece of the millions of body parts were not found and identified.

The Department of Design and Construction decided  to change the recovery method only after  the Fire Department gave the go-ahead. Life must go on.. The decision to move on was the proper decision, a decision that the Fire Department validated.  I hope we can agree that  it's wrong for anyone, including the Firefighters Union to write political screed with the blood of the victims.

By the way, Rudy G would have looked a lot better in a basic-black sheath.

"Subterfuge" is like back when certain factions pushed for incorporation in the lower Keys in order to control short term rentals in the neighborhoods for their own benefit.  They were repulsed at election time.

Elect Billary, oops Hillary. Come on up to Canada, they have universal health care. The average public pays $.48 cents on the dollar. They have a 15% sales tax on top of that tax dollar. A bottle of booze costs over $50. A pack of cigarettes costs over $7. Gas is $3.68 a gallon. Diesel fuel is $3.64 a gallon. If you can find a good sale a loaf of bread is $3.99. You wait in a doctor’s office with an appointment, sometimes 3 hours after your appointment time then you get an average of 9 minutes to see the Doctor. Go ahead and get universal health care; look what it has done to England, Germany, Japan and Canada. They have no Navy, Army, Air Force or Marines to speak of. Canada has no roads or highways to speak of. Only one way into Canada from New York called the QEW.

I will pay my own health care. I pay a little more a month than you do and live in the greatest county in the world called the US of A. No universal health care or Hillary for me.

Unless someone forced a crack pipe into your mouth and made you inhale, I have no sympathy for you.  Crack-heads are nasty, filthy people.  They steal from all their neighbors and friends just to support their habit.  Don't give me this "feel sorry for Crackheads" song and dance.  It's not like they came down with cancer.  If you think I would feel sorry for someone in my family smoking crack, you're dead wrong.  Crackheads don't deserve sympathy.  They deserve prison, or death.

Another "Family Values" do-gooder got busted in a men's room sting at the Minneapolis Airport a couple of months ago. The story only just broke yesterday. This time added to the list of hypocrites: (drum roll)  the Republican Senator from Idaho, Larry Craig who tried to solicit an undercover cop.  And you just got to love his opening line at the press conference he held on Tuesday, "I want to thank everyone for coming out today". Don't you just love it?

[The Key Deer Bar & Grill]  The first thoughts that come to my mind are, “Why on earth, a disagreement between and ex-employee and her ex-boss would have been posted in the first place?  My second thought is that unless one is completely sure of the facts, one should be most careful in what one says (and publishes) as the words “liable” and “lawsuit” comes to mind.  Friendly banter (on this gossip column) is one thing, but slanderous and vindictive behavior resulting in harm (to any person or business) is quite another!

If an employee isn’t working out for whatever reason, the owner of said business has a right to replace said employee. Said employee does not have a right to then (publicly) harass and defame their ex-employer because of this.

I know that the Key Deer Bar & Grill has a new partner and they have plans for revamping the place.  So instead of spending yours days fanning the flames here and trying to push yet another business out (of business) in Big Pine; we all would be better served with your support of that business (unless of course you would prefer to see yet another empty building along US1 in Big Pine, and the remaining dozen or so employees unemployed).

I suggest all of you out there go on in, say “hello” to the owners, and support you local businesses.  That’s what I’m going to do.

Refuge is killing the raccoons
It is true.  They couldn't round up any kitties so some genius decided it's now the raccoons that are killing the marsh rabbits.  I saw a truck full of traps head down the dirt road between Watson field and Wilder.  Got to keep someone on payroll, don't you know?  Funny thing, though, we used to have a family of coons across the canal in the woods, but I haven't seen them in a very long time.

Todd German replied to yesterday’s email, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” not happy that I’d aired what had passed privately between us. I replied that it was good to get it out in the open. Now people will know he doesn’t support me, which might help his candidacy. I opined that voters need to know which candidates other candidates support, because if they get elected they will be running the city together, and voters don’t need any more squishing and squirming politics that leaves voters wondering what is really going on, or living in bliss and not wondering at all, which is a big piece of what is wrong in Key West.  GoodMorningKeyWest.com

[they want the crack heads to OD] I smoked crack for 2 yrs and it was a drug that took over my life. It is hard to stop once you start smoking it. I have been clean for three years. When I see people who have been smoking crack I feel sorry for them.  You do not know what people go though. It is a drug that you can never get enough of. You  need to read up about this drug instead of wanting to see people die from it. You never know, but your own child, sister or brother could be a user so watch what you say. You never  know when it could happen to someone in you family.

[Willi sets the record straight] The writer says that Willi characterizes Bill Becker as a "political assassin", this puts Mr. Becker in the company of John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Sirhan. I actually listened to the show; I think Willi was referring to character assassination. It seems to be that Willi will not go on a show that asks question that the public wants answers to. (I like Grusin's show, but he didn't do much of an interview.) This is not character assassination, just the right of the public to know what public employees are up to.

I tried the search feature on the archives and it's not working, is there another way to search the archives? (Ed: Yeah, it sucks, but that all we’ve got. I wish I know how to get a better one for free.)

A Rudy Ranter brays that Rudy G is on a power trip and that he is an egomaniac.  Ranter, you’re right on!  Every bloody candidate, Rep or Dem is an egomaniac, every one of them is convinced that he/she is capable of being President and will make a better President than any of the others.  Every single one of them lusts to be the most powerful human on the face of the earth.  If that doesn’t make every damned one of them an “egomaniac on a power trip”, nothing does.  I sure hope the Rudy Ranter doesn’t want a shy violet as our President.  The firefighters union, which is Democratic controlled, is opposed to Rudy G simply because Rudy G is a Republican and because he wouldn’t increase the NYC tax burden by bloating the union firefighter pay.  Firefighters are heroes and they deserve great pay and pension.  Please remember that NYC firefighters and police are among the highest paid in the country.

As for the Rudy G divorce(s), I just don’t share the ranter’s view that firefighters are so intolerant that they can’t understand domestic strife.  Rudy G is no jackass.  The jackass is the symbol of the Democrat Party (very appropriate).  Every one knows that Rudy G brought some sanity and fiscal responsibility to NYC, so it’s no surprise that so much venom has been squirted at Rudy by the Jackasses at this stage of the proceedings.  You’ve got to believe that they are afraid of him.  Oh, yeah, please research all the candidates on the web, but please check out the authors too.  Check the candidates’ record and question the motivation of the authors.

All of the above does not suggest that Rudy is my candidate; Romney’s health care proposal makes a lot of sense to me.  Romney has a proven record as a policy maker and manager in government and private industry.  I wonder what the specifics of Hill’s health plan are, why hasn’t she announced it?  I sure hope that somebody will soon tell us what her accomplishments have been.  I’m anxious to learn.  I’m glad to see that she has again changed her mind and is now supporting our troops, GWB and the surge in Iraq.

Why does Bush wear that flag lapel pin? Is it so he can remember what country he mis-represents?

[To Kay Thacker from Tom Willi] Subterfuge?  Isn’t that calling the kettle black?  Subterfuge is defined as a deceptive device or stratagem.  I think your post qualifies as both and is therefore 100% subterfuge.

To bad you don’t have a clue about which you write.  It does illuminate your ignorance though. You missed your calling and should write fiction for a local newspaper.

I would ask you to get your story straight but that wouldn’t assist you in your crusade now would it?

My last day with the Town of Davie was October 15, 2004. You actually got that part correct. To bad it is the only thing that is correct. I attended every budget meeting and all of the adoption hearings as the town’s budget was processed in September just like every other city and county budget in the state.  How can you use the term disappear to describe a process that I followed through to completion?

The audit that you mention was a direct result of alleged fraud and embezzlement by the administrator who assumed my position.  I left the Town long before the audit was even proposed by the Town Council.  The audit happened about a year after I had left the position.  Check your facts.  Your time reference is way off.

To clarify, I have never been implicated in any way with the activities of Kovanes.

Better luck next time.  The facts speak for themselves.

It is a violation of County policy to disparage another county employee and to act unprofessionally.  These must be hard concepts for you to understand as evidenced by your actions.

Why would you think kids stole your fishing pole?  (From the Classified section)  Most kids don't want anything to do with the water; they stay indoors playing games, watching TV, studying and harassing their parents.  Most likely some drug addict took it to pay for cocaine which has infested the better parts of Big Pine.  It is a highly organized drug ring and they barter for goods and services.

Let's roll on some neighborhood crime watches or call in The Guardian Angels with the red hats.  The police cannot bring them down.

[hormone patch] Yes, it does work. It’s easy to use and doesn't affect other parts of your body. It does take a while. Also, try a small amount at first in case you have sensitive skin.

Rudy is an “egomaniac jackass on a power trip”. All presidential candidates are! That’s why they want to be the most powerful person in the world, the President.

[Best in the South Fried Okra] Cut into small pieces, dip into egg, then bread with 2 part cornmeal, 1 part flour, salt and pepper. Freeze for at least one hour (this gets it crispier) then fry 2-3 minutes or until crispy golden brown. Salt and pepper again to taste. It’s the best in the South!

We enjoy restaurants which are run by grown-ups, with high quality food, professionally trained chefs and good wine selections which would not include screw caps.  You are better served to travel up or down the Keys for a nice dinner out or go to Robs on Friday or the Big Pine Restaurant.  (Baby back ribs are five star.)  I had surf ‘n turf at A & B Lobster House in Key West that knocked my socks off.  It was orgasmic, along with the view, the people watching, great wine and a very nice server named Chopper!

Someone posted that Hillary, if elected, will try to push thru a health plan that will cost the average person an additional $300 - $400 a month. Please post the site you read that information on. If you can’t then we know you are either 1. Mis-informed. 2. Mis-reading something or 3. A liar. I’m hoping you’re one of the first two.

Hillary has been supporting the troops from all along and has said she would leave some troops in Iraq if elected. Are you just listening to the rightwing nuts and not verifying their hyperbole?

I’m no Hillary fan or real pleased with Giuliani’s theatrics, but Hillary seems to be the more intelligent and stable of the two. Time will tell. I look forward to verifying your "increased insurance cost" information. Facts please, not a hatchet site.

[The anti-Rudy ranter is gone] What, you never take a vacation? Rudy’s a weasel. I am glad you missed me though. I hope you do vote for Rudy in the primaries. I would love to see him  run against  Hillary.

[They should have a detachable monitor on laptop computers so you can hook up a proper LCD flat panel monitor to it for improved viewing without the laptop's monitor in the way]

They do - sort of. Many notebooks have custom docking stations. I'm using a full size monitor, keyboard and mouse now with an IBM/Lenovo T60. Dell makes them, too. Attach all the peripherals and the network to the docking station and it uses them for the notebook. Easy, but costs several hundred dollars. If you have one of the cheaper Dell computers, you may be stuck with tying everything to a "port replicator" and then plugging it into your notebook.

It can be done with almost any brand, just search for the appropriate docking station or port replicator for your computer.

Refuge is killing the raccoons that they're trapping during this absurd cat trapping project. I thought the raccoons were being taken to a wildlife expert on Stock Island for relocation. Does anyone know the truth?

The last I heard, they have managed to trap 3 cats, 2 of which are apparently someone's pets.  The refuge has clearly done a great job getting their facts straight and going after these ruthless rabbit killers that are clearly running amok on BPK. I just can't think of a better environmental project to have my money wasted on.

[Waitressing jobs come a dime a dozen] You’re cold, buddy. It doesn’t matter what work you do, when you have money coming, its yours. If someone beats you out of it it’s wrong. I bet if you had kids, rent, water, car payments, insurance and electricity and some one didn’t pay you…well, I bet you would fell different. You’re a cold, mean person.

I was away for a few weeks and an reading the archives of this great site.  I’ve been laughing all morning.  It appears the two hot topics are Tom Willi and Key Deer Grill firing servers.  I can't even think of anything to add about Tom Willi.  I don't understand why he still has a job.  He should go to work for George W. so they can have the two biggest wastes of human life working together.  I have deposited things smarter than Willi in the toilette via my anus.  --realflestate@hotmail.com

As for Key Deer, someone like Tom Willi should go hang out there.  How can any place of business bounce employees' pay checks?  They should be reported to the labor board and shut down.  It sounds like they are issuing hand written checks as pay.  Are all the taxes taken out?  I went in there once in a while when Captain Dan owned it and I know Betty served me.  I am not sure if Shelly ever did.  Betty was a wonderful person who was always friendly and had a smile on her face. Call the labor board and if he wasn't taking taxes out of your check report it to the IRS.  They will bite like a pit bull.  Nobody in a cash heavy business wants the IRS in the building.  If Betty and Shelly are reading this send it to the IRS.  I just might send this email there myself.  Good luck girls, your better off away from that place.

To everyone who writes in here, thank You for the laughs.  This is a great way to break up a day.

My daughter went to Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for "minimal lettuce." He said he was sorry, but they only had the iceberg.

[an egomaniac jackass on a power trip] Isn't that one of the prerequisites to seeking political office?

[whitetail deer's
body size] I had this 8point key deer buck in my yard yesterday. He was about the biggest I’ve seen.

[hormone patch]  I've had some friends tell me it works very well for them.  Others are using some gel stuff I don't understand.  Pills still sound the easiest, but there seem to be a lot of alternatives that work for different metabolisms.  Sometimes you have to try a couple of different combinations, but there is help, just give it time to work.

The NYC firefighters hatred for Rudy goes way beyond any union beefs that they may have with him. One of the biggest things that bother them is the fact that under his direction, the remains of many firefighters and others who lost their lives at ground zero have been buried in a dump at Staten Island.  After a load of gold was removed from the site, Rudy called off the search for remains and ordered the rubble (containing remains) to be hauled to the dump. When firefighters protested, they were arrested.  Imagine having your friends or family give their lives only to be hauled away to a dump. Then imagine the guy who ordered this to happen running for president based on his record of how he handled the event.  That's why the firefighters hate him so much.

I'm not a Democrat, but when I learned about how the events of 9/11 were handled by Giuliani and how he has profited from his association with this tragedy it makes me sick and I've come to realize that he would make an awful president in spite of how good he looks in a dress.  Please don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself if you are interested. What you learn might shock you.

Everybody's bitching and gripping about the local restaurants. Deer Editor: why not set up a list so we can vote for the places on a scale from 1 to 10?  Only one email address input allowed per vote.

whitetail deer's body size]  That was very interesting, thanks.  I grew up in Iowa, where the whitetails would often blend in with the Hereford cattle, both in size and color.  Now I understand better why they are so much smaller in the south.

[Garbage and Recycling] Garbage and yard waste are two days per week, recyclables are one day per week, hardly qualifies as crap in your front yard every day. If setting your trash out is so distasteful, you can always take it to the waste station on Cudjoe yourself - of course that's too much like work, so it may not work. At least there are people down here who will do your dirty work for you!

Actually the Key West Citizen is a broadside, not a tabloid. The Keynoter is a tabloid. Key West The Newspaper is a tabloid. Solaris Hill is a tabloid. The Miami Herald is a broadside.  Get the picture? Tom Willi may have done various things during his "tenure", but I'll bet any money he didn't do it during his "tenor". And Bill Becker's show is "Morning” (not Mourning) Magazine.

[hormone patch] Hopefully they work and they’re probably best positioned over the user’s mouth.

[Colorado wildlife, nobody panic!) Driving out of our neighborhood a little squirrel was in the road.  He was just standing in the road in front of our vehicle, not moving a muscle.  I got out to scare him off the road, but he just looked at me.  When I reached down to him, he lifted a little paw up like he was asking for help.  Poor baby.

So I scooped him up and surprised my parents by meeting them with a squirrel in my hands.  Not knowing what else to do, I put him in the back seat of my car, and we went out to eat.  When we came back he was sitting in the driver's seat.  I called my sister who had rescued a squirrel a few years ago that was much tinier than this little guy and got some tips on what to do.  We started searching the Internet for wildlife rehabilitators.  I placed a call and they called me back within the hour and gave me the name of a Squirrel rehabber  right in our town.  She was willing to come and get him, but we agreed to take the squirrel to her.

Now, how in the world would "being an Army Ranger" give anyone the ability to access military records? Answer:  It wouldn't. So that was more invented crap.  Surprised?

Adam and Eve in Afghanistan.

I commend you all for taking the time to voice an opinion on the over-development of our communities. The developers build, get their dough and leave the county, heading for another area. Please continue to speak out and show up for the Development Review Committee (DRC), Planning Commission, and the Board of County Commission (BOCC) meetings. If you want the agendas sent out to you please drop me an email and I will add you to the list: oktcraft@terranova.net Thank you for caring about our unique community called the Florida Keys.

I just can't believe anyone can say a good word for Tom Willi. Truly, to be objective, he has over spent the counties monies. He took the top bid for the Hickory House, and instead of offering the owner 2.5 million, decided to pay 3.2 million. Where is the sense in that? We are in a budget crises and he ups his direct staff salaries to over $100,000 plus. This is the Keys people, not a major city, nor rich company who is able to afford such high wages. If you listen to his replies to questions asked during BOCC meetings, they are only responses, and not answers. He rarely answers questions, but rather takes a side step. He was in favor of including the private Shark Key, into the county waste water sewering program to put more burden on this financial mess. These are just a few of the other actions Willi has done. It would be great if anyone could list all of his wrong doings. Is there anyone out there with this list? At this time, there is no doubt the county would be much better off without this man.  --iwffa@iwffa.com

Who is it that is allowed to assassinate Bill Becker and the Key West Citizen on the Coconut Telegraph and yet not have their email address revealed? C'mon editor, what is the policy? And referring to Willi as the best thing that happened to Monroe County is kind of like saying Alberto Gonzales is the best thing that ever happened to the Department of Justice.

Either someone was being seriously sarcastic, or one of the gang of three has figured out how to use email. (Ed: I’ve corrected my error. Sorry.)

I wonder who will receive more jail time, the dog killer or the gator killer?

Try pickled okra. If you slice it and add it to a salad it's a wonderful extra and most people won't realize what it is.

[smart ass answer #4] A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store but she couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead."

[smart ass answer #6] It was mealtime during a flight. "Would you like dinner?" the flight attendant asked the man seated in front. "What are my choices?" he asked. "Yes or no," she replied.

Monroe County government mismanages the airport expansion project, blowing $6 million dollars. All officials run free. Meanwhile, Key West police arrest three men on felony pot charges for a $20 deal. Something smells here and it ain’t the pot!

[Universal Health Care for $350-$400 a month]  Even though you pulled these figures out of your arse, sign me up.  It's cheaper than my BC/BS group rate through my employer which has a $250 deductible and a $1500 out of pocket expense per year.  Not to mention the hassles involving in network vs. out of network, billing snafus, etc.  Like it or not, every legitimate citizen of a rich country like ours that can afford to piss away billions of dollars on foreign aid and frivolous wars has a birth right to at least some form of minimal health care.

Do you know what happened this week back in 1850, in California?  California became a state.  The State had no electricity.  The State had no money.  Almost everyone spoke Spanish.  There were gunfights in the streets.  Basically, it was just like California today, except the women had real boobs and the men didn't hold hands.

In 1981, Rabbit Key Basin, in the middle keys, had water that looked like pea soup. I guess this is nothing new, just more people around to see it.

I noticed that the Square Grouper basher's identity was not mentioned. What is up? (Ed: I was so shocked at plastic plates that we forgot to ID them.)

Why exercise frightens me!

The latest algae bloom in the Content Key area is proof that our nutrient problem is from the mainland and all other points north.  Since the net flow of water is from the Gulf to the Atlantic side we are not the cause of the over nutrification that is occurring on the Gulf side.

Willi sets the record straight on Richard Grusin’s Sunday morning talk show.  I think Tom did a stellar job of pointing out his plan to take Monroe County government to more efficient levels during his tenor. Tom also stated that many of the good in his administration is never praised and all the media picks up on is the bad rumors and misinformation mostly touted on the Bill Becker “Mourning Magazine Show" and "The KW Citizen" a 2 or 3 page tabloid newspaper. (Tom Tuell, editor)  Grusins asked Willi if he would ever return to the Becker show for anymore interviews.  Tom's stated that Bill Becker was a political assassin and rumor monger and adds nothing positive to their interviews and will not be returning to his show.  Other topics mentioned were some of the budget questions and some of the recent personnel problem that the county is facing.  I believe that Willi answered all Grusins’ questions honestly and still think that Tom Willi is the best thing that ever happened to Monroe County government. --govwatch05@tampabay.rr.com

Life is great in the keys. We went to Molasses reef and there was over 100 feet of Windex blue visibility. A couple of hundred pound jewfish, 10-15 huge permit and tons of fish. We were the only boat on the reef and the reef looked really healthy. Best of all when I came home my tax bill and insurance came. They both went down a decent amount.

Living in the keys is priceless and thanks to Governor Crist and FIRM for doing the right thing and making it easy and affordable.

Jordan Milo the alligator slayer isn’t a damn Sergeant.  I am a US. Army Ranger and I checked his background. He was a PFC at most, then discharged. Get your facts straight before you go blabbing about America’s finest supporting a law breaker!

Alberto Gonzales is history! About time. He resigned this morning because he only had one supporter in the country.

[Square Grouper] They shouldn’t charge those prices for service on plastic plates. Go to Parrotdise from now on, I am.

[Garbage and recycling] (For those of you that live in trailers please ignore this) For those of us who are very proud of our homes having garbage and recycled things in front of my half million dollar home is too much for my tastes. There’s nothing I can do about waste, but if I recycle that adds to the crap in front of my beautiful home. That means that there is crap in front of my house almost every day of my life (I put it out the evening before pickup). I didn’t work that hard to have the first thing I see when I come home is a bunch of crap! I agree with the other writer who has to take their crap out to the main road 4 times (waste and recycle) a week and then go out there and pick it up four more times. Yes, it can be done if you’re of a mind, but I’m not.

The algae has covered Cotrell Key reef for about thirty years. It completely killed it. I forgot what it’s from, but it completely removes any eatable life wherever it grows.

They should have a detachable monitor on laptop computers so you can hook up a proper LCD flat panel monitor to it for improved viewing without the laptop’s monitor in the way. If that were possible I wouldn’t need a PC, only a laptop and thus would end the task of trying to synchronize the info on my two computers. Michael Dell is you listening?

[Cause of the algae] The first time I noticed the green slime was 5 years ago during mini-season. At that time it was more west then the Content Keys. It was located between Snipe and Sawyer just off Johnson Key Channel. I did notice this year it was more east, but I did not see any on the rocks by the Content Keys. That was several weeks ago. I am sure there are many reasons for the slime. I also think all the reasons spin off of the biggest problem which is the ill-managed development of the Gulf coast, the keys and the destruction of the Everglades. Developers and politicians lack any kind of foresight or respect.

[Okra, ways to cook it] One way is to cut it into small pieces, batter, and fry it. Another way is to stew it down with a can of RoTel tomatoes; or you can boil the whole pods 'til done and serve with plenty of salt and butter. Good stuff.

Who gives a crap about the Key Deer Grill mess?  Waitressing jobs come a dime a dozen around here.  Get another job and move on.

I don't know if this has been posted on the forum.  But, if it hasn't, here's an enlightening site of speed traps for all of us who drive.  Even BPK made the list - and, no surprise, BPK readers have posted some comments.  http://www.speedtrap.org:80/speedtraps/stetlist.asp

Yeah, the thrill is gone.  When I was young, my high school music teacher told me, "You have a great voice...too bad you do not know how to sing with it."   I am a professional musician and like all musicians down here, I am a legend in my own mind.  I would like to think that I have some talent, but I’m sure the others do too.   If you go out and buy a guitar and learn four major chords, you too can be a rock star!  Hey, how about a Dm7-9-5?  No, huh?  Oh, well.

[About the water]  I got tendonitis from drinking this crappy-tasting water and since switching to spring water it went away, my skin is clear and I feel better.  I took a swig of tap water the other day and my body reacted by coughing.  I don't even think my animals should be drinking the tap water.

Are you kidding about the plastic plates at Square Grouper?  Why would this be acceptable to you?  Don't you know there are other places to go?  From now on, when an establishment attempts to serve me an $8 cocktail in a plastic cup, I am going to decline it unless I get a glass.  If I am at a pool or on a beach, then plastic is okay.  Maybe we will bring our own stem ware, full flasks and not spend our money at places who could give a rat’s ass if we're happy customers.

Dave Koppel is one of the true butt kissers that give butt kissing a bad name. He was the  one that got a nice raise even when he is the problem and every county job is over budget. And lets not forget his buddy Bill Bybo from years ago, that stole computers and sunk his own boat to collect insurance money and  Dave’s sewer department. -- Roadsuper5@aol.com

[Aslyum] I’ve been mulling tonight’s Hometown! PAC’s candidate forum at Tropic Cinema. Yesterday, Hometown sent out a last-minute change to its format: Due to the large number of candidates, they will not be allowed to make speeches, but will only be allowed to answer questions posed to them by other candidates and by the panel of questioners.

The question I should be asked tonight, the question everyone, really, should be asking me, is: “Have you, Sloan, ever been under the care of psychiatry?” Since Hometown is not here to ring the bell after a minute or so, I will answer the question by telling you about it. GoodMorningKeyWest.com

Does anyone remember that the State and County governments told us that septic tanks and cesspits and the untreated sewerage outflow in Key West was polluting the beaches? Now all the septic tanks, cesspits and outflow are gone, but the beaches are still closed due to pollution. Are they going to apologize? Hell, no. Now it's the chickens and cats polluting the beach. Aren't we glad we spent millions of dollars for nothing?

Giuliani’s children are not just “young teens” whose daddy left them bitter because of the divorce. The youngest one is 17 and the other is 20. That's old enough to know what's up and old enough to know that their father is a jerk.  Both of them will be old enough to vote for someone else in the election.   And what about the New York City firefighters?  The real heroes of 9/11 can't stand Mr 9/11. Isn't that ironic?  Why do you think that is?  Hint: It ain't because of his divorce(s).  Google it and find out for yourselves why Rudy is definitely not someone to vote for.  He's an egomaniac jackass on a power trip.

Found dog tag necklace with chain in waters off Picnic Island.  Dog tag has word “Braveheart” and a bible verse stamped into it.  Call 872-3180.

I want to thank everyone for the opinions of Tranquility Bay's restaurant.  I made reservations for tonight.  Key West has some great fine dining places, but I want to try a change.  We have some great restaurants in The Lower Keys (Some bad ones too) but no real fine dining at all.  Square Grouper, which is great, is about as upscale as we have.  I love Square Grouper, but any place you can eat in a bathing suite and T shirt isn't upscale.

What is this I hear about witchcraft and juveniles on Big Pine? I have lived here for 8 years and have never known about it. Can somebody fill me in?

It looks like the anti-Rudy Ranter has gone to ground now that it’s been proven that Rudy did not leave NYC with a bloated budget or government.  It’s true that he does not have the support of the police or fire unions.  Why?  Both unions are firmly in the pocket of Democratic politicos.  Both unions made outrageous salary demands for their members which would have plunged NYC government finances into the toilet. Rudy simply refused to kiss union butt.  Even so NYCPD and Fire Departments are among the highest paid in our nation, plus they have the some of the best pension plans in the nation.  They richly deserve good pay and comfortable pensions, but they’re human and they just want more.  They will fight any politician who resists their demands.

Hillary is looking better to me now that she’s again supporting our troops and is against our withdrawing from Iraq too soon. I believe that she knows that we can win.  Plus I'm starting to like her universal health care plan, it looks like the really rich folks will be paying for most of it and average people will only be paying an additional $350 - $425 per month in taxes...well worth it.

Island Girls

The last time I saw someone disciplined for calling names was in the third grade and even then the teacher asked the other kid what he had done to help cause the problem. Whatever. Are we supposed to believe that no one in the Monroe County government engages in name calling? I find that hard to believe. What I don't have trouble believing is the suspension of Sal Zappulla, our budget director, was calculated to mask a very real problem--the budget.

This kind of subterfuge is not new for Mr. Willi. In Sept, 2004 Mr. Willi disappeared during the budget hearings in Davie while he was the town administrator and he resigned (Oct.15, 2004) before the special audit could be digested by the Davie Town Council.

This time Mr. Willi, instead of disappearing before the budget hearings, has done the next best thing (to cover his butt. He has made the budget director disappear! -- oktcraft@terranova.net

One of the whitetail deer's survival strategies is to regulate their body temperature with their body size. the largest bodied deer are found up north where their heavy bodies help them stay warmer. Smaller body size lets them keep a little cooler, the farther south you go the smaller the deer. White tail deer range from Canada to Argentina. I have personally seen whitetails in Honduras, Belize and the Dominican Republic and they are about the size of key deer. Key deer seem to have shorter legs than south Florida deer, but the body size is the about the same. The last spike I checked at a Big Cypress preserve weigh station weighed 70 lbs.  A mature buck might go up to 120 lbs. There's an 8 point  buck that hangs around my yard on Big Pine that is probably close to that. Big Pine deer are bigger than the ones on the out islands because of the extra nutrition from your yards’ plants. Some people say the genes left over from the Wisconsin deer that were released to help the heard back in the 1950s might have something to do with it also.

[Lunar Eclipse tomorrow morning]
Sky watchers should set their alarms early for tomorrow morning, August 28 to see the year's second total lunar eclipse just before sunrise. It will be visible from the Americas, Oceania and parts of Asia.
I also worked with Betty and Shelly for one winter season at the Key Deer when Captain Dan was still there and they were going thru a tumultuous time with Barbara as team leader or whatever you’d like to call it;  then her getting fired and Betty and Shelly coming back to work and then leaving again.  That restaurant has such great potential and has always been my favorite place to go when I'm in the Keys for the season.  Shelly and Betty and Darrell were such assets to the place.

You know of all of the stupid stuff you guys talk about, you should be talking about something important like the crackheads. The numbers are growing more and more everyday and I'm tired of it. Even the kids are getting in to it now. Who knows, maybe your kid is next. Here’s at least one of many of my ideas for you all: Let’s give each crack head a huge amount crack, so much that they OD. One by one, another one bites the dust.

Did you all hear that NASA has screwed up there predictions about global warming? They really messed up again. Don't believe anything you hear from the feds.

[No recycling] The god-awful sound those 100 beer bottles a day we drink always wakes me up when they pick them up. Besides the sooner we put a dome over the planet and grow our food like our weed (hydro baby) the sooner we can get rid of winter. Oh, and alligator is some tasty stuff!

[Murder most foul] Maybe Key Largo's becoming a dumping ground for Miami.

[garbage pick-up] Saturday they emptied my can and left a pillow in it; they do it so fast and carelessly.

Really pretty pictures of Israel.  I’d love to go see it, but till things stop blowing up this slide show will do. Slide Show

Did I read it correctly that the budget director, (fired) Sal Zappulla, was responsible for the millions that the County is in debt and not the County Administrator?

The thing that you look at and point to and call a “computer” is a monitor. The computer is the tall box under your desk.

Does anyone know if the canals are polluted on the east side of Doctors Arm? There were some comments made about carcasses, but where?

Are any of you ladies using the hormone patch and does it work?  What works besides cigarettes and alcohol?  This is hot-n-horrible.  My poor husband.  Help!

[Cooking okra] I’ve tried cooking it a couple of times and it comes out slimy unless I batter it and fry it and clog my arteries.

Palmetto poppers
.

So now the algae bloom has reached the Content Keys! The same bloom covers all of Florida Bay between the Upper and Middle Keys and the mainland coast near Flamingo. The entire bay is like a dense pea soup, in some areas the visibility is less than 1 ft (you cannot see the propeller of your boat). The algae bloom is creeping out of the bay into the ocean through the area’s bridge channels.

In stews and soups it's kind of slimy to me, I think it’s best breaded and fried.

There must be some confusion here.  There is no connection between civilians living in government housing and the air station's Air Installation Compatible Use Zone (AICUZ) study.  Civilians who work on the air station can live in government housing.  Over 125 civilian families are living there today.  Again, you have to work on the base to qualify.  The AICUZ study is the Navy's recommendations for compatible use development around Boca Chica.  The AICUZ can limit construction of housing, affordable or otherwise on areas of Big Coppitt, Stock Island and Boca Chica.  However, since the County routinely ignores the Navy's recommendations, encroachment will continue and more people will get upset about jet noise.  Some people never take into account that living next to an air station could be noisy from time to time.

[Texas deer feeding] Those Texas deer sure look a lot like our little key deer. I didn’t know anyone else grew short deer. I though all other deer were big like up north.

[Murder most foul] Is Key Largo the new murder capitol of the Keys? Three murders in two months has to be a new record!

I was wondering if anyone knows the cause of the algae that is covering most of the Content Keys area.  In my 11 years I have never seen anything like it. I wonder also if it is affecting lobstering; it seems they are fewer this year.

[j-walkers] I do not know if people are getting more stupid or just nuts. J-walking has become the nations number one sport I think. Anyone dumb enough to step in front of 5000 pounds of moving metal deserves to get killed.  In my book, anything big enough to harm me has the right of way!

I have eaten at the Butterfly Cafe several times. Their luncheon menu is not expensive and the atmosphere is well worth the money. I love eating out on the veranda it is so Caribbean. You won't be sorry the food is excellent. They also let you see some of the rental units.

I didn't grow up with okra and have no idea how to cook it, but I did learn recently that it makes a really pretty flower, so I may have to grow some and learn.  Any chance Mable would share her recipes?

"Just passing through" I did the deed yesterday afternoon. Got tattooed at Key West Inc, Inc., between Angela and Petronia Sts. Met the owner, Jim, and some of his friends, or perhaps confederates. Polite, thorough: personal intake information, request for drug allergies, scanned my driver’s license, gave me a waiver to read and sign before anything started. I chose Pixie, a petite artist of twenty-five, at it since she was fifteen. Pleasant, good conversation. Took about 40 minutes of actual time under the needle. Hurt more than I anticipated, but seem to be doing fine this morning. GoodMorningKeyWest.com
95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.

My big property tax break in Palm Beach Gardens is $41!  Great job guys.

Unbelievable horse was on here before, but was so unbelievable that we’re having a repeat.

[tip jars at to-go places] I completely agree with you.  I refuse to tip when I am picking up a pizza or a sandwich.  That is ridiculous.  I would rather save those dollars for the pizza delivery guy to put gas in his car when I am too lazy to go pick up.  I also agree with you about tipping 20% unless the server has a bad personality, doesn't smile, or never shows up to refill my drink, then I start going down to 15% and so on.  My boyfriend always throws our change in those take-out tip jars and it ticks me off, seeing as how I save pennies I pick up off the street.  I should show him what you wrote.  Maybe I should bring a tip jar with me to take-out places and they can tip me for driving over there and using my gas.

My house was rumbling and making a sound that we‘ve never heard before. after checking that it wasn’t our goddamned cat again, I found the source. It was a large buck scraping the velvet off his antlers on my 6x6 upright supports for my steps.

To Wldfire5@aol.com and your comment about Betty and Shelly from Key Deer. A thank you for the laugh you gave me!  Anyone who ever saw Betty or Shelly in action would know how absolutely asinine terming them "lazy" would be.  Clearly you never worked with them.  I had the pleasure of working with both of these ladies and they never stopped. They were always moving, cleaning or stocking. Or maybe you did work with them and they expected the same performance from you, and now you're being the vindictive one.

Good luck ladies.  You will do so much better wherever you end up.  It's Key Deer (and Big Pine's) loss.

Have a great birthday PJ.

Didn't the County spend millions of bucks a while back to determine the best places to put wastewater treatment plants for the Florida Keys?  Was that just another huge waste of taxpayer money? Now they want us to pay millions more to FKAA so they don't have to deal with Key West Resort Utilities.  What’s the deal, guys?

I went to the Square Grouper restaurant for dinner on Friday night.  I was surprised at the extremely high prices ($29 for yellowtail snapper), and even more surprised when everything was served on plastic.   We started out with plastic tumblers for our water glasses, then plastic bread plates, and then our appetizers were served on plastic plates, and even our main entrees were served on plastic plates!  At least we didn’t have plastic silverware.

[Okra] Well, what are the two ways to cook it?

[Musical Review] Out clubbing Friday night, I saw 40 Foot Sharpie at Boondocks. What happened? The new lady singer made every song sound the same, like they were all supposed to be some R & B song. Also, she had so many effects on, she sounded like she was in an echo chamber. The guy singers sounded good, they weren't over effected and did justice to the original songs. The drummer was ok, but sped up all the time. All that said,  I still liked them, just not as much. They were my first choice to go see, now it's an even bet.

[once guarded military movements] I have to agree with this posting, it seems at times we are our own worst enemies as far as providing information.

I've had it with garbage pick-up. I will not line my cans up any more. And when I catch fish I will let the maggots infest the can before I put it out for pick-up.

What's the big deal about making recycle day the same as garbage day? Just bring out the garbage on garbage days and bring out the recyclables on recycle day. Stop whining.
[Good news about home values] My home value dropped, plummeted exactly 13%. Taxes decreased 17%. Someone must have made a mistake on your property so that's why there is an adjustment. Almost all property values dropped in Monroe County this year.
[Key Deer Bar] That was a very good retort by Betty. The balls in your court, Rick. So far my money is on Betty.

If you buy a house next to an airport and then complain about the noise you are stupid. The Naval Air Station is a hell of a lot more important than any ordinary airport. That's where they train our pilots to defend our country. It's always been there, way before those that are complaining about the noise.

Naval Air Station = jet noise, duh!

My sister lives in NYC and has for the last 30 years.  I asked her what she thought of Giuliani’s record.  She said he got tuff on small time crime.  If you got busted for certain small crimes you got a choice. You could go through the regular judicial system or you got help.  Drug counseling, GED's or English lessons if needed.  Helping to make citizens productive, not destructive.  What a concept!

What I noticed on my visit there recently is it was a very clean city. I have seen NYC at its worse, panhandlers, gross subway systems and garbage.  My sister says statistically it is the safest of the largest cities.  As far as his kids are concerned they are only young teenagers and a product of a divorce, of course they will not like their dad who left.

Preserve the raccoons from the animal preservation people!

[Texas deer feeding]  At the Key Deer Refuge, they'd just as soon have the deer starve as have anyone feed them.  "Let nature take its course."  But that doesn't apply to the Marsh rabbit.  They’re killing raccoons now as they may be a problem for marsh rabbits.  Go figure.

I never noticed a sulphur smell or taste to the tap water here, but have developed intestinal difficulties in the last 3 years here that required diagnostic testing.  When I was signing the pre-test paperwork and the nurse asked me if I had any allergies and I responded, "Yes, to sulfa", she said, "Wow, we're having a run on sulphur today!"  I asked her to clarify and she said that every single patient that was there for intestinal difficulties, like myself, was allergic to sulphur.   Hmmm.  I do not drink tap water anymore and I'm feeling much better.
A Canadian Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the Canadian, U.S., English, Australian and French navies.  At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a group of half dozen or so officers that included personnel from most of the countries.  Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French Admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.  He then asked: "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?"  Without hesitating, the Canadian Admiral replied: "Perhaps it's because the Canadians, Brits, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German."

[water filters] I connected a twenty-five dollar filter form Ace Hardware to my cold water pipes that comes to my kitchen faucet and the refrigerator’s ice maker. It can’t be beat. I did a blind taste test with two glasses of designer water and one of filtered tap water. None of my fussy family could tell the difference.

[Tranquility Bay in Marathon] We’ve been there for brunch and it was excellent even though the waitress was out of it. The atmosphere was excellent too, sitting out on the veranda overlooking the Bay. We were hungry for a classy place and that is it. We’ll be back. (Bring money.)

[Only 20% recycle] More would recycle if they picked up on the same day trash is picked up. I don’t care for the excuses why they can’t pick up on the same day. Until the County gets serious about recycling it will remain at 20%.

Since the start of the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, the time period from the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 through now, we have lost a total of 3,140 soldiers.  As tragic as the loss of any single soldier is, consider this:

Below is a list of deaths of soldiers while actively serving in the armed forces from 1980 through 2004 (figures are confirmed on department of defense site):

1980 2,392
1981 2,380
1982 2,319
1983 2,465
1984 1,999
1985 2,252
1986 1,984
1987 1,983
1988 1,819

[The Hamburg Plan] I think if the government standardized a category of health insurance that everyone could understand and call it Basic Insurance, it would make all health insurance plans easy to compare. As it is now you don’t have a chance out there. And the Insurance companies like it like that.

If you didn’t like the Basic Insurance and wanted better care you could add on a supplement for, say, eyeglasses or, maybe, a dental supplement. It would be like a hamburger.

Everyone knows what a hamburger is. It’s a sliced bun with cooked ground beef in it. Under the Hamburg Plan, if you wanted condiments you would pay a small extra monthly fee for them. If you wanted cheese, that supplement would cost you a lot more. Hell, you could even get a double cheeseburger if you were real rich!

We really should have government Basic Insurance. I think is is another of our God-given inalienable rights. But corporations run the country and I'm not likely to see any satisfactory change in my lifetime.

All I want is not to lose my everything if I get cancer.

This morning news announced that Pakistan has successfully test–fired a new cruise missile that is capable of delivering a nuclear warhead. Frightening , to say the least.

[don't have any right to bitch about it]  Yah, but without the whiners it wouldn't take near so long to read this column and I enjoy the break.

[Tranquility Bay] You would be talking about the Butterfly Cafe and it is well worth the visit.

Why build more houses?  We have so many houses on the market for so many years, where's the common sense when people are struggling to sell our homes. I listen to the stories from my clients who are stuck in the keys because they can’t sell there homes.  I have seen new homes go up and no one is moving in, I have seen neighborhoods destroyed by overdevelopment by greedy land developers who can’t even fill those homes. There are terrible decisions being made by our government that cause many of our much needed working class to be ousted.  Where's the fairness to the families that live here? Lets get involved and save our beloved islands. I hope others will speak out.

[nobody drinks the tap water] I have lived here most of my life and I have always drank the tap water and have never experienced a sulfur taste but then I do brush my teeth three time a day also.

Ground-Breaking Antilandmine Radar

[Key Deer Bar] What’s going on with Key Deer Bar and Grill lately?  Does Capt Dan have any part of that place anymore?  Next we will be hearing that they closed down too.

[Texas deer feeding] Deer Editor, You have published a link to a stolen video, mine, labeled Deer for Breakfast.  In your article, it is inferred that we are doing something illegal by feeding the deer.  We are in Texas where it is legal to feed deer, so the post you printed is inaccurate, among other things. The link goes to Yahoo video, where the thief has posted our video with a link to his site, called JTTigger.  He has also put the stolen video on that website.

If you want to link to the video, my wife has posted it on Metacafe, so please use this link so we will get credit for it instead of the thief.

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/316898/deer_for_breakfast_in_texas/

PS. After the video appeared on your site  I got a call from Steve with Florida Parks and Wildlife.  He seemed a bit uneager to pursue the matter (of feeding deer), and relieved when he found out I wasn't anywhere near Florida.  Now you've made me wonder what the story is at the Key Deer Refuge

[Tap water] There’s no Sulphur taste, or any taste, in Keys’ water. I’ve always drunk it.

[Good news about home values]  My tax statement says my market value has increased over 40% this year alone.  Wow!  (No, I haven't done any improvements.)  And here I was thinking mine and everybody else's had gone down in value.  So this is my thought to keep the county and state honest in their valuations of our property.  They should have to stand behind their claim and buy the property from the owner at the stated value, if the owner so chooses. How else can we keep them in-line?  Does anyone believe they can win an appeal otherwise? I know if they had to purchase my property, they wouldn't be so flippant about its valuation.

I'm glad to hear the business at Key Deer Bar and Grill has picked up since I am no longer an employee.  Rick, you have quite an imagination.  A week before you let me go you told me about your 3 spotters and how you needed 2 bartenders behind the bar to make it more efficient.  I did explain to you why the sales were down or did you forget that conversation?  1. The bar outside was charging $2 for the 3 Olives Vodka that I charged $5.25 for inside.  Then it changed to tequila shots for $2.   Don't forget Rick, I was standing next to you when a customer came up to you and told you they stood outside while the bartender was giving everyone free beers and shots.  The bartender even came inside to get a T-shirt to give to a customer.   It was a little difficult to keep sales up because I couldn't compete with "Free".   2. Yes, when you put another girl on, sales did go up inside. Only because it was the first night you closed the bar outside.  3.  I have to admit I could have paid more attention to my customers if  I wasn’t busy helping  the Russian waitress put in orders due to the language barrier between her and I and also her and her customers.  Or if I wasn't delivering every drink ordered by the 16 year old waitresses.  3.  Food sales do go down when we had to give a discount or completely void the sale due to the food coming out slow or burnt or sometimes not at all.

You were right about one thing, you did cut food cost.  You raised the prices and cut the portions, but most of the time we didn't have the product at all.   I just wanted to refresh your memory about that conversation.  Your call to me 2 hours before my shift was, "Betty, you cost me $175 last night and I have to let you go".

As to the problem with my pay, let’s just say I didn't realize it took 4-6 weeks to open a checking account.  When I came to pick up my pay you did offer me $210. I didn't throw it back, I didn't touch it, I wanted all my pay.  You told me to come back at 4:00pm and you would have all the money.  Then you called me an hour later offering me $100 and the rest of my money in a check. You even asked me what I was going to do with the check, cash it or deposit it?  Are you nuts?

On Thursday, Aug.16 I was told by the bartender my check was going to be mailed to me by certified mail.  Well it is Aug 24 and still no check.  I know by your standards, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to set up a bank account, so let's see, in order to mail a certified check you go to the Big Pine post office to mail it. Isn't that strange that my mailing address is a P.O. Box at Big Pine post office.  Since we live on an island and everything is so slow here, why don't you send it by Pony Express or Coconut Telegraph, I might get it faster.

But let’s face the facts, the real reason I still don't have it all boils down to  "Non-sufficient funds".  Don't blame the banks and don't blame the post office.  You were only my boss for 10 days and you were going to “change the cluster f**k”, as you said.  Well, first pay me and all the employees you owe.

To all the ex-"disgruntled" employees, call the dept. of labor wage and hour 305-596-9874. They are waiting to hear from you.  Just so you know the check the band received that night, didn't cash due to " Non-sufficient funds” go figure” -- keysbetty@yahoo.com

[The ultimate in woman's body piercing] Men all over the country are urging their wives and sweethearts to get this 'chic' procedure

[Affordable Housing Task Force] Don’t you just love it that a banker is the head of the affordable housing task force?  He surely got a great motivation to build houses that are below market rate (he said, sarcastically).

[Storms] No kidding, guys, I have stayed in the keys for every storm from 1955 to date. If you have special needs of any kind--leave. If you can not take care of yourself and loved ones for several days without any outside help--leave. If you can not live without city water and elec--Leave. If you have trouble sleeping in 90+ heat and must have TV-leave

Yes, a generator makes things a little better, but just a little.

[Tranquility Bay] My wife and her mom had a very fine meal there. I have not found time to try it. I must work so my wife and her mom can eat out at fancy places.

Sorry to hear that the Key Deer is having such a hard time. However Betty and Shelly are lazy and vindictive. They couldn't cut it back when Betty was part owner of Capt' Anne's. Why would anyone think they would be any better as employees?. --Wldfire5@aol.com

Anything with OBGYN in the name has to be good! Ob-gyn answering

[Butterfly Cafe at Tranquility Bay] I have been there several times and recommend it without hesitation--it's not inexpensive (on a par with Square Grouper or Mangrove Mama's) but the surroundings delight (typical Pritham Singh stuff) and the food is delicious.

Please excuse me folks, but I have to get this off my chest. Why is it that once guarded military movements of boots and equipment gets reported in the news every day. Today I read that the new target of choice for the insurgents is the new Humvees that were built to deflect shrapnel from IEDs. For some reason our own military told the world how many we are making, how many are currently in theater and how they deflect the shrapnel and when the rest will be moved in. I, we, the enemies don’t need to know how many are already there. Let them find out on their own. In fact, I’ve heard the President himself make a statement a while back at a press conference where he said "because of the increased hostilities in Baghdad we will be moving in forces from the Northern section of Iraq into Baghdad" and he gave the date. I’m sorry, but to me, that’s telling the enemy scheduled troop movements. I hate to sound suspicious, but I have to wonder if that’s a way of saying "things are improving" because surprise, surprise the enemy moved away from where the troops were going and went into the areas they left. But things did improve where they were moved to. All I’m saying is the government should shut the hell up because we don’t need to know these things.

Love Bill Clinton or hate him you have to admit one of the wisest things he did was when he fired missiles over Pakistan’s border without their permission and hit the terrorist camps. He told them hours after the attacks what he did. He didn’t give them time to respond.

At least act like we can keep a secret. Thanks for the soapbox. This isn’t a slam against Bush, except for the troops movement gaff, because none of them can keep their traps shut.

The Cub Scouts are holding a fund raiser for the expenses they accrue for the year. This supports camping, pinewood derby, patches etc. They are selling popcorn (various kinds) as well as a tin that can be bought for troops overseas and their families. They will be in front of the Winn-Dixie selling over the next couple weekends. We've also covered the "Ships Way" neighborhood of Big Pine (thanks to all who have bought already). Thanks!

Great posting on the Workforce Housing Task Force...spot on!

Please don’t hassle the folks who have second homes in the Keys.  Maybe they don’t provide workers, but they pay full taxes without burdening our infrastructure as much as full-timers.

This is a picture of my okra patch with me doing my early morning cuttings.  The real reason you find me on this page today is about my disappointment about an okra segment on the Today show.  There is something about okra that all people should know. Okra is like a good lookin' woman. She's good looking no matter if she is with her husband or another man or if she goes to Wal-Mart or to the Waldorf. There are just no two ways about it. It's just like Mable down at Mable's Lucky Break Cafe in Port St. Joe, Florida.  She only makes okra two different ways and for last 45 years, the only problem was that she never made enough.  The other day on the Today show they had some fairy-assed chef from Atlanta, Georgia with that yuppie bimbo host trying to show us how to cook okra ten different ways.

They obviously weren't around when the real okra cooks were walking this earth. There are some things you just don't mess with and those two "okra experts" didn't realize that they were in somebody's nut sack, when the real thing was happening.  By the way, what's that I hear about a Mangrove Pie down there in the Keys?

When the idea of using the Navy housing came up, it never occurred on anyone that the new AICUZ Navy fly zones would prohibit that (or is there more action going to take place in order to make this change too).

I am seriously wondering what the AICUZ would have to do with allowing the civilian workforce to live in housing? Sounds like another excuse from the CO of the base. First it was the security issue, now this. If the new AICUZ would prohibit the housing to be occupied as workforce housing, how can it be used for AD military and their civilian dependents and DOD civilian employee housing? They are the workforce too.

Yet again a poster wrongly claims that Rudy grew NYC government by 40%.  I sure hope this poster is not intentionally lying, but that he/she is simply misinformed.  The fact is that in 1993 NYC had 248,850 employees.  In 2001 NYC had 249,824 employees, a growth of 974 bodies.  Dear friends, that is 4/10th of one percent growth over 8 years.  That’s no spin, no BS, no Dem/Repub propaganda, just government report numbers.  Proof Pudding is a tasty treat, but you're trying to sell a crap sandwich.  By the way, I'm leaning toward Romney or maybe Hillary (that is if she'd just make a clean breast of Filegate).

CORRECTION (Ed: On yesterday’s home page ad for Parrotdise Waterfront Dining I wrote that they were closed for vacation. I was wrong. Sorry Keb and crew!) They are open for business and serving some of the finest food in the Keys in one of the most beautiful natural settings. They are open Wednesday through Sunday from 11AM-10PM. Stop by for their daily happy hour from 3-7.

[County Budget Director firing] Although those on the outside might be surprised by your action, those familiar with the problems Sal (Zappulla) has created realize this action is long over due. From my perspective, I have never seen someone talk as badly about so many people as Sal has. Commissioners, County Clerk’s staff, Division Directors and yourself, Sal has bashed them all. He might act nice to them, but when they’re gone he lets his true feelings be known.

Aside from that, in my opinion Sal has demonstrated a total lack of understanding in multi-year budgeting. This is evident with the County’s Capital Improvements Plan. A sufficient fund balance should have been maintained in order to fund the projects in the other years. This was not done and now we have a large deficit that needs to be addressed. I have lost confidence in his abilities long ago.

I know a lot of staff will be happy with your action. --David S. Koppel (Email to Mr Wili forwarded to Bigpinekey.com)

I am proud to know Sgt Jordan Milo, who is a great person and dedicated to serving our country.  You can be sure every supporter of America’s finest will be in Key West on Sept. 7 to support him at his sentencing.

[Helping 1,000 Families in 1,000 Days - Affordable / Workforce Housing in the Keys] I went to this meeting, August 8th, and noticed something was wrong with the picture. The meeting was headed by John Dolan-Heitlinger (President and CEO of Keys Federal Bank). Also present were Realtors, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Navy Captain, School Superintendent, County Commissioner, Press, and a few concerned citizens. Why weren't the people who truly need affordable housing present at this meeting? You know, like servers, house cleaners, hotel workers, retail store workers, laborers, school aids, etc. Instead, the impression I got was that most of these people did not worry about money, and would be more interested to sell homes, offer mortgages and approve building permits to developers rather than to find real solutions to this "affordable housing crises"

During this meeting, I asked: how the number of 1,000 homes came up. John explained it was an arbitrary number. I asked why is there no list of persons and families needing affordable housing, from which we would then know how and what to build or rent?

Because there was never a study done to establish the need (how long have we been doing this affordable housing crises thing).

We are giving developers huge breaks on building fees, land use, ROGOs, density, etc. in order to build affordable. There must be a list to work from!

I suggested we go to each business, get names of workers seeking workforce housing, find out if they would like to rent or own, what their  wages are and start getting facts instead of ideas for marketing slogans or mantras.

Another problem contributing to the housing shortage is second homes. I suggested we proportion the number of second homes we allowed to be sold in the Keys since buyers would not be full-time residents and contribute to our workforce/community. Other countries do this to safeguard housing for their workers--who come first. But as I was facing realtor Donna Windle she explained. “You cannot deny anyone the right to buy a home in America.” I don't wonder why she said this. Because now we're cutting into her livelihood. And this is the problem with these task forces. They are filled with the wrong people.

Imagine the response the Chamber had when I suggested workers get paid (gasp) affordable wages!

When the idea of using the Navy housing came up, it never occurred on anyone that the new AICUZ Navy fly zones would prohibit that (or is there more action going to take place in order to make this change too).

I have always wondered about the affordable/workforce phenomenon since it's inception. When the pro-development group created the mantra "affordable housing crises" they started to control just how this "crises" would be fought. Workshops/taskforce, planning, commission boards are packed with persons who serve the developers. It is so bad and so sad. What these islands became was/is decided by a group of developers, while the rest of us would just like to live our lives with some quality.

What is wrong with our Commissioners?  Another vote from commissioners Spehar, McCoy and DiGennaro allowing our Maine Resources Department to be gutted, and not re-in instated.  This is the second chance these commissioners have had to come to their senses, but no, they have voted the second time not to have our Marine Resources Department as it was. They are employees with a total combined service of over 58 years’ experience, contacts and knowledge.

Mr. Willi you may be able to pull the wool over McCoy, Spehar, and DiGennaro, but give the public a break!  These commissioners are supporting your bad decisions and when election time comes around the public who cast their votes will have the final say.  Commissioners, you can have Willi write explanations and reasons why he is being allowed by you to do the things he is doing to our county, till the birds come home, but the responsibility stops at your door.  You are his bosses and you are allowing what is happening in our County.

I was just notified that our Budget Director, Sal Zappulla was suspended without pay.  We are in a fight to cut and balance our County budget. Good move Mr. Willi and commissioners. You have this one on your plates too.  Commissioners, what are you doing to this County?  Why are the voters of this County not contacting Governor Crist and demanding your recall?  These firings, dismantling and suspensions are not doing the best for this county and that is the oath you swore when you took office. Election time is drawing near. --oktcraft@terranova.net

As you may already know, it is a sin for a Muslim male to see any woman other than his wife naked, and that he must commit suicide if he does. So next Saturday at 4 PM. Eastern Time all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists.

[My candidate] Must be mayor of fantasyland.

Key West is sure getting tough. The other night I was a bit polluted and asked a cop to call me a cab. He said, "You're a cab, now blow into this tube!”  I was walking home.  I got a WUI.

I received my 2007 Notice of Proposed Property Taxes and, low and behold, all three columns are greater than last year’s taxes.   I have been Homesteaded for over 15 years, so where is the roll back?  My assessed value even went up!  I was under the impression that the law stated a 5 - 7% discount and back to the 2006 rate.

Just another shell game by our great County!

[Kill All the Lawyers] In yesterday’s “The Secret of Salt,” I inadvertently wrote that Ed Swift came up and introduced himself to me after the candidates forum. It was Ed Scales, not Ed Swift. As far as I know, Ed Swift was not there. As far as I recall, I’ve never met Ed Swift; that is, we have not formally been introduced, shook hands. Yet in my mind he was there nonetheless. As I told someone yesterday, who wrote to me about the error, I have a hard time separating in my mind Ed Scales from Ed Swift, ever since learning when Ed Scales was on the Key West City Commission that he was Ed Swift’s company lawyer. I have read BPK.com for years. My utmost respect for you for doing your job. You can print what you want. They don't have to read it, and don't have any right to bitch about it.

[A candidate must prove his/her mettle] I agree. Rudy did expand the NYC government by over 40% proving he’s for bigger government. We can’t afford to increase the Federal government by that amount. We can’t afford Rudy. The proof’s in his pudding. On that we agree, sir.

[Evacuate Category 1, Chicken shit] Wheeuu, hot damn, you sure got cajones to fight out a Cat 5,  but I guess if I was like you and had me an ’87 Ranger big-cab, a ’92 Torino, a 16’ Mitchell with a 35 Merc,  two goats and a shoat all living in mom’s single-wide, I’d talk about staying too.  But Bubba, what about your wife? Do you make her leave?

Geraldo, this morning, was saying how Michael Vick is being overly penalized for his cruelty. He also said that some blacks are starting to make noised that Vick is being persecuted because of his race.

I’m so sick of this double standard we have in this country. Horrendous crimes are excused because of the perpetuator’s race.

Has anyone been to the restaurant at Tranquility Bay in Marathon?  I have been told it is amazing.  Looking for some opinions from people not affiliated with it.

I had the most pleasant experience getting my prescription filled at Walgreens in Marathon.  Jerry, the Pharmacist, gave the best customer service I have had down here in years.  Carmen, at the desk, was also very nice.  I am starving for kinder service and they exceeded my expectations.  I even asked John if he was new in town, but he has been here for ten years.  I told him that I was not used to being treated so nice. Walgreens forever!

Yeah!  Success!  My ring was found!   This is John from the Winn-Dixie dairy department.  I want to say thank you very much for all the help and concern everyone showed me.   Also, Kudos to Ed for letting me put out my call for help on this site.  A lot of people told me they read about my ring on here.  I'm so happy now.

I've never lived in a place where nobody drinks the tap water.  I understand the logistics of our water system are challenging, to say the least.  First you have to actually find usable fresh water in south Florida then pump it 170 miles to communities down the keys.  In my mind the Key's tap water has a sulfur taste to it.  I do believe the water is safe to drink, but where is that terrible taste coming from?  Is it the water source itself or hundreds of miles of piping?  It’s a well known fact that most tap water is safer to drink than bottled water, the only difference is the taste.  Has anyone had any luck with water filters in their homes or businesses?

It seems that The Nature Conservancy, in its wisdom, has really put a hurting on the pond on Summerland.

An impartial jury has been chosen for Michael Vick's trial.

[More Rudy favors small government] I haven’t decided yet if Rudy is my candidate, but I just can’t let a poster get away with posting untruths. The fact is that on March 5, 2001 the City of New York had a $2.3 billion budget surplus. Further, the city had enjoyed a large budget surplus for the previous 5 years.  My source: Testimony on that day by Ron Lowenstein, Director of the New York City Independent Budget Office to the New York City Council Finance Committee.  The NYCIBO is a City Charter non-partisan watchdog of the Big Apple’s fiscal practices and policies.

The poster who wrongly blamed a purported NYC budget deficit on Rudy is: 1. Wrong, 2. misinformed, or 3. lying.  I want to believe its 1 and 2.  C’mon folks, do your own research on all politicians’ claims. Don’t trust Republican or Democratic flaks to give you truthful and accurate presentations.

If you decide to stay for a Cat 5 hurricane to save your vehicles and boat, please kindly forward your preference for the type of casket you prefer and the preference of Bible passages that you would like read at your funeral.

[Evacuate Category 1] I’ve stood, or rather leaned, outside in a Cat 1 hurricane. There’s not going to be any damage from a Cat 1 storm; just some trees and stuff. I’ve been in about ten of them and 4 major hurricanes. The flooding and losing trees is the only damage I've ever had.

[From the new owner of Key Deer Bar & Grill] I don’t understand the posting from my two disgruntle ex-employees.  Shelly, you texted me (not called) that you quit to deal cards at a poker game.  Then texted me back asking if you could come to work the next day two hours late?  You were only scheduled to work 2 days a week and could not even work both schedules.

Betty was not in trouble for the band’s bar tab issue, that is an excuse you made up.  The truth is three Independent Scouting Reports came back very negative on Betty.  Chronic complaining, poor service and lack of training of fellow employees was her downfall. Since she left, our business on those shifts have increased. When approached with everything you could not assume responsibility, but pointed your finger at everyone else.

As for the check, you were told that because we were opening a new account not to cash, but deposit it only. If you wanted it cashed we could do it at the bar?

Betty, I handed you your final pay myself, but you threw the cash back at me and said you wanted a check and then you left without waiting for it.

We can understand that you’re upset and want to blame us for letting you go on the grounds of the band’s bar tab and trying to say that we have account problems with the bank, but you were told to deposit those checks before a certain date.  So please ladies take the termination with some grace!  And please do not call the bar cussing-out fellow employees; we do have Caller ID.

We do understand that you’re upset and are calling anyone who will listen to the drama, but that's what it is--drama.  So, ladies, good luck on your next venture and we wish you the best.

New nutcracker

I find it odd that when the Cubans came ashore in Key West they were greeted with smiles, given nice fluffy towels, the police took up a collection up for them and went out and bought them some food. Then they got to apply for over $10,000 of free money and privileges. All while the city was trying to figure out how to get American homeless people off Higgs Beach’s benches  because some families felt uncomfortable with the homeless there.

How telling in today’s world when our own Police award and coddle illegal border crossers and look at unfortunate American citizens as scumbags. Those Cubans could be even worse. GoodMorningKeyWest.com

One more try at finding the owners of a cream colored cat with blue eyes found on Summerland Key. We were able to catch it and brought it inside. It is definitely someone's pet because it used the litter box right away.  He has sort of charcoal colored ears, white toes and a touch of pink on his nose. It is a really nice cat, but a little skittish, probably from having to live outside.  One fellow called who was on vacation and lost his cat several months ago. I am hoping he will read this and come over and check the cat out. I forgive him for calling me an a**hole because I wasn't sure of the breed. Ha! Would Rudi have ran for president if there wasn't a 9/11?

World divided

I guess that makes it official...we're all African-Americans. JOURNEY OF MANKIND - The Peopling of the World

The recent Cuban rafters were treated like heroes. But if they hadn’t touched one foot on the beach and they still had both feet on the vessel they would have been treated like criminals. They could have been shot by the same police who were so kind to them after they set one foot on the beach.

The area of the brain responsible for self-control--where the decision not to do something occurs, after thinking about doing it, is separate from the area associated with taking action. The results illuminate a very important aspect of the brain's control of behavior, the ability to hold off doing something after you've developed the intention to do it. One might call it “free won't” as opposed to free will.

It is very important to identify the circuits that enable “free won't” because of the many psychiatric disorders for which self-control problems figure prominently (from attention deficit disorder to substance dependence and various personality disorders).

[more time at the ballpark then 9/11 site]  I don't care about Rudi one way or the other, but I'm sure the rescue workers were just as happy when he and his political entourage stayed the heck out of their way.

[Earth and Mars are converging] Right now the distance between the two planets is shrinking at a rate of 22,000 mph--or about 25 miles per sentence. Ultimately, this will lead to a close approach in late December 2007 when Mars will outshine every star in the night sky. Of a similar encounter in the 19th century, astronomer Percival Lowell wrote the following: "Mars blazes forth against the dark background of space with a splendor that outshines Sirius and rivals the giant Jupiter himself."

Contrary to rumor, though, Mars is never going to outshine the Moon. There is an email circulating the internet-called the "Mars Hoax" or the "Two Moons email"-claiming that Mars will soon swell as large as the full Moon, and the two will hang together side by side on the night of Aug. 27th.

By the time you finish reading just this one sentence, you'll be 25 miles closer to the planet Mars.

[Moon and Sun] A Solar Eclipse will take place when the Moon covers the Sun In the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 28 when the Moon crosses in to the shadow of the Earth, becoming completely immersed for one-hour and 30 minutes, a period of time much longer than most typical lunar eclipses. In fact, this eclipse will be the deepest and longest in 7 years. A startling metamorphosis occurs around 5:52 a.m. EDT. The color of the Moon changes from moondust-gray to sunset-red. This is totality, and it lasts for almost 90 minutes.

[How would immigrant learn a new language after 40]  Slowly and diligently.

[Rudy or Hillary] There is no lesser of the evils here. I guess I’ll have to vote for Alfred E. Newman.

You just don’t get it, or maybe it’s me?  How does one “act” like a nigger by behaving like a redneck?  Let’s create labels for everyone on earth.  Not!

Did Florida pass a law that cell phone usage must be hands-free while driving?  Answer  No. There is a rumor circulating that Florida has passed such a law, but it is not true.

There were several bills introduced in the 2007 legislative session about driving while using a cell phone, but none of those bills passed so they did not become law. You can read a summary of legislation passed during the 2007 legislative session concerning traffic laws by visiting the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website at http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/Leg2007.htm

[2nd language after 40] That's what the immigrants expect us to do in our own native land!

I cannot understand why our government doesn't automatically send back illegals. If I tried to do the same thing in any country, I would be thrown in jail, beat half to death, made to work for nothing and have to pray for escape.

with DUI conviction.

My boat lift is completely legal and is far less than 1/4 the width of my canal.  If you really have to worry about hitting my boat lift hard enough to cause you serious injury, perhaps you should slow down and stop throwing a wake in my canal.  You shouldn't be crowding the seawall anyway.  I've got news for you.  If you run into my lift, that's called a crash.  And guess who's going to be at fault--you!

[Your Honor, my clients are illiterate and idiots] Two men and a woman were among the recent wave of people trying to cash in on the high price of copper scrap metal when they broke into an abandoned nursing home in Gainesville, Ga., in July. However, they had missed the sign at the entrance announcing that the building had recently been converted into a training facility and kennel for police dogs, and they were quickly sicced on and arrested.

My daughter’s baby is due in 2 weeks and her boyfriend worked for Key Deer Bar & Grill.  He was depositing his paychecks into a savings account to rent a place to live for her and the new baby.  All three of the paychecks came back non-sufficient funds and he was never paid for the last week that he worked there.  He has asked the owner numerous times that he be paid and has show the owner copies of the returned checks.  The last time he requested to be paid he was told by the owner he would call the police if he did not leave the premises.  As a result of this they have no place to live. They have contacted the State Attorney’s Office and were told they need the driver’s license number of the person who signed the checks in order to prosecute the case.

He is not in the financial position where he can hire and attorney.  Key Deer Bar & Grill is a DBA for a Corporation called GTFM LLC.  Does anybody have any advice on what he can do?  How can a business get away with this? --alliedflains@bellsouth.net

Yesterday I attended and participated in the Key West Chamber of Commerce candidates forum, held at Double Tree Grand Key Resort at the top of South Roosevelt Boulevard. I didn’t know how I was going to feel about being there, having seen the bull dozers and dump trucks come in there and terraform into a Five Star Destination Resort what had been a big chunk of Key West’s remaining wetlands. The terraforming occurred while City Commissioner Merili McCoy, wife of County Commissioner Sonny McCoy, was doing everything she could to preserve what was left of the wetlands on the island where she was born and grew up. Not long after that, Merili passed on from this world and was eulogized at St. Mary Star of the Sea as the “Tree Lady,” because of how interested she had been in planting trees on Key West. To be dead honest, I felt yesterday at Double Tree like I was in Naples or West Palm Beach, where I’ve spent a good bit of time in the past. GoodMorningKeyWest.com

[Rudy has accomplishments] For this voter, accomplishments are what the whole damned thing is about. I don’t give a rat’s rump if a candidate’s kids don’t like him, or that he/she has bitching ex-spouses.  I consider only what the candidate stands for and if there’s a track record to prove it.  My candidate must have a solid core of belief that is in concert with my beliefs.  My candidate must be a leader, a shaper of convictions.  My candidate must not be a panderer to polls.  My candidate will be “what you see is what you get”, not a poseur who changes faces so as to appeal to the audience of the moment.  Please God, deliver this nation from candidates who have no core beliefs, but who mold their pitch to meet the mood of the moment.  My candidate must have a record of accomplishments that prove his/her mettle.

MySpace.com makes me pretty darn happy; and people think it's just for kids. Be careful, it's addicting once you've learned how to navigate.

Check out there photos.  There’s some really funny people over there!

Isn't it funny how I leave a comment supporting the person who worked at Key Deer and out Editor doesn't print it.  Ed, how much is that place paying you to cut out comments about them? (Ed: Your comment wasn’t supporting anyone as much as it was trying to destroy a business.)

Try this: Sit down with any Yellow Pages and a marker, cross out any listing you think is irrelevant to humanity, to the planet, to conservation, to yourself. It will scare you!

Tonight we went to Key Deer Bar & Grill.  We had a wonderful bartender named Tara.  Unfortunately, there was no cheese; therefore we couldn't order the pizza we had stopped by to order.  Then when ordering drinks there was no Capt Morgan Rum, so we ordered Kamacuzi's  only to find out that there was no Triple Sec to make them.  Unfortunately, the bartender, Tara, took the brunt of the whole situation as, apparently, she had been doing all night.  We therefore offered to go to Winn Dixie to buy the cheese and the liquor store to buy the booze.  However, she declined, stating that the owners were in Key West buying what was needed. How can you have a bar in that situation when there really aren't that many too choose from?   This wasn't at 2 in the afternoon. -- Bigpineuner@aol.com

[is Sloan Bashinsky really running for mayor] God save the queens!

(?)Save the greenbacks is a bit of a stretch, but the roller coaster riding Kotex is really weird. I wonder if woman are running out to the store to get such a loop-d-loop product?

Two shark bites this month in Islamorada.
Home foreclosures are up over 93% since a year ago.
Is Sloan Bashinsky really running for mayor of Key West? I read his email exchanges and can't get a sense of his campaign other than as an advocate for the homeless. Is he a serious contender or "the perennial candidate"? He seems to be for the little man and not the developers, but I don't know.

Don't believe the posting about the new traffic fines that supposedly went into effect on 8/1/07.  It's an urban legend and simply not true. See www.snopes.com

Last day on the job

[There is a difference] I, too, was a bit surprised when I saw the word nigger in the first post, but after reading the entire thing I agree completely and don't understand what yesterday’s contributor was trying to say. White people that dress and act certain ways are labeled as rednecks and trailer trash just as certain blacks are labeled niggers because of their actions. Maybe it's not always a true representation of who that person is, but, unfortunately, most of society tends to judge "a book by its cover".

In my own case, I have lots of ink and shoulder length dreadlocks and at the age of 51 am not so naive not to realize that most people look at me as an "old-hippie" or a major druggie, of which, I'm neither. I know who and what I am and am not bothered by how people perceive me.

To Joe and Meri-Lyn. Let me be among the first to wish you a Happy Anniversary!  It is a blessing you have each other. You have been real kind to me and I appreciate it.

[not getting paid]  Contact the labor board, they will make sure you get your pay.

Someone say “low rent”? Where?  I'd really love to know.

[Depression and stress]  I have it bad here in Paradise and here is what works for me.  Intense exercise, treadmill addiction, cardio.  Quitting everything and everyone who is bad for me.  Eating more fruit and veggies.  Keeping my books, house, mind, body and soul in order.  Happy music. Making time for hobbies.  St. John's Wort Herbal Supplement (6 a day, and ask your Doctor or go online before taking this mood enhancer).  You cannot mix this with an anti-depressant or other prescription drugs.  Sunshine and light therapy.  Laughter.  Adopting pets from shelters.  Having at least one good friend who shares your interests.  Take the best and leave the rest (meaning ignore stuff you cannot control).  Drinking and drugs do not help - they only mask the depression and stress.  I feel really good from the above combination and hope more of you get on a healthier lifestyle.  What makes you happy?

[Toilets—pay as you go]  That has a very logical sound to it.  It also opens many new business opportunities; toilet meters, gadgets to defeat toilet meters…

[Inflammatory posts]  The origin of the dreaded “n” word was a legitimate descriptive term "niggardly" which meant lazy, sloppy, dirty, unkempt, ungentlemanly, rude, etc, and had nothing to do with skin color.  Somehow it got blended with a legitimate racial category (probably due to lack of correct pronunciation) and became a horrendous insult.  It still describes everything bad in behavior (and no skin color holds a patent on that), but using it is bad behavior in itself.

[“Do you need change?”]  I've had them say "I'll be right back with your change".  That gives me the opening to say, "don't bother" and saves them a trip during busy times and doesn't assume I meant to give them the overage.

A most fascinating visual way to learn about our origins. If they taught like this when I was in school I wouldn’t have gotten thrown out.
JOURNEY OF MANKIND - The Peopling of the World

[Rudy has accomplishments] That’s it?  Gee, what a stellar reason to vote for someone who’s kids don’t even like him. At least Hillary stood by her husband thru hard times. Rudy can’t even get his family to support him.

What a shot! Video

Higgs Beach Follies, Mostly. An item on last night’s City Commission agenda was the question of the City taking transfer of Higgs Beach from Monroe County, which I feel is what needs to happen and have felt that way since I came to Key West in late 2000. Quite a few people spoke to the use of the beach and park by homeless people, and a need for something to be done so families and people in general will feel comfortable using the beach and park without being hassled or grossed out by homeless people. Would anyone know if blended fruits and vegetables into a smoothie will keep the vitamins and minerals if put it in a refrigerator for 24 hours?

[boat lifts] Quit whining. When I lived there we had no lifts, the boats were tied to the docks on both sides of the canals.  It's the Keys, not Martha's Vineyard where you have to be real boaters with real skills.  The Keys are a place with skinny water and fact chicks. The locals (real locals, who fished for a living) have left, the reef is dying or dead. Figure it out.

I never heard this kind of crying when the boats were coming in low over the waterlines and the bows were packed full of bales. If you moved down from a state with "New" as part of it's name and don't like it, go back!

I’m enjoying the “Mangrove Pie/gambling boat bakery” riff. Posters, bring us more! When the bakery opens, what do y’all think about a Mangrove Pie eating contest? Maybe that Japanese competitive eater guy could be enticed to enter.

[There is a difference] I'd say there is, I'm sick and tired of this politically correct bullcrap. I believe that people should say what they mean. Call a spade, a spade, not an excavating instrument. I hate legalize lawyer talk. Lawyers should talk so that the average Joe could understand and contracts should be written in such way that I will not need a lawyer to interpret it for me. But that's how the sonsofbithches make sure that they are needed. Nice scam, and they’ve been doing it for years. But I'm getting of the main subject. I remember an admirable submission a while ago by Bill Cosby. Yes if someone acts like a Nigger why should I call him or her an African-American? If somebody behaves like a redneck, I don't call him or her a mentally impaired Caucasian, I call him or he a stupid Redneck.

[Rudy favors small government] How did his adding a  40% increase to the city's payroll prove that? "He cleaned up the garbage"  Hell, that’s easy to do if you rob the budget. He left New York City with a record deficit and that’s based on subtracting the 9/11 costs. He’s all show and rhetoric. Check it out yourself. Sorry, but reality cannot be spun.

[immigrants] Yes, they are taking jobs that the video game generation doesn’t want, but to having to learn English is a bitch. How would you learn a language like Polish or Thai after you turn 40?

[server ask if I need change] I say yes and let the server go all the way back to the cash register, make change, bring it to me and then I walk out with it. Maybe they’ll learn!

Now it means something.

Instead of hate, try Ignore. Put them on ice and look right through them. That kills the people who are trying hard to turn you in to a hater like themselves. Most people are not worthy of installing such emotion anyway

[hurricane evacuation] I’ve got a lot of confidence that my home can handle at least a strong Cat 2 storm. Anyone who elects to stay in a storm that is forecast to come ashore closer than 50 miles from your home is in real danger of death.  Nonetheless, for the last 10 years I have chosen to evacuate for even a Cat 1 that’s aimed at us.  The risks outweigh the rewards.  Forecasters just don’t have the means to precisely tell us where, and at what strength, the storm will come ashore.  The damn things can and will jog right or left and can increase strength dramatically in short order.

I worry more about flood damage to my cars than to wind damage to my home.  Without a car or truck you are seriously screwed down here.  Virtually every near miss or hit brings a flooding event of some degree.  Remember Wilma, little wind, massive water.  We take both cars and usually leave our home at about 3 AM (we’ve never encountered traffic problems) which puts us on the mainland just before daylight and we can then adjust our plan.  We take sufficient food, water, and back up gas so that we won’t be subject to panic situations on the mainland.  We have yet to have a problem returning after the event.  Wilma chased us to Lauderdale, we did have minor cosmetic damage to one of our vehicles.  Many of our friends elected to stay on BPK.  Every one of them who stayed lost vehicles to flooding.  We spent a few bucks on a motel room, but avoided spending thousands of dollars on new vehicles.

[Michael Vick is one of the worst animal abusers in history] Are you off your meds or what? What he did was disgusting, immoral and illegal, but I can think of many worse offenders (Frank Purdue for one). That being said, I like your idea of turning this into something positive. I just hope he serves time at the PMITA prison.

We eat weekly at Crossbones and have watched their transition from the Galley Grill. In my opinion they bought the cesspit of flies and bad service and have brought good service, fresh food and they have really cleaned the place up big time. A couple of times they messed up with my order and another time we waited 30 min for our food. The first time my wife's meal was free and the second time we were given half off. Every restaurant slips occasionally, especially new ones. Crossbones is a nice addition to Summerland. At least it's family owned and ran, unlike the major chains that could have bought the place.

[You can’t fix stupid] "There's an old saying in Tennessee. I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, fool me once, shame on…shame on you. Fool me…you can't get fooled again." —President George W. Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

[More stupid boat lift dribble]  Your comment about hoping you run into a boat lift so you can sue just about says it all.  Where are you coming from?  That's about as dumb as someone saying I hope you break into my house so I can shoot you between the eyes.   Personally, I prefer my davits over a lift, but I tolerate others in the neighborhood with lifts quite well.  As Rodney King said, "maybe we should all just get along."

English translation: no parking on bicyclists at any time

If the choice was between Rudy and Hillary, I'd have to write in someone. I can't believe that we're in that position again where almost all of the candidates suck.

I will no longer be sending e-mails. Thanks to the Post Office I am now going back to licking stamps.

OK, all of you boat lift owners. The lifts take up more than the width of the boat when they are up because of the extra length of the horizontal supports. When they are down, where most owners leave them when they go out to play, they use up even more space due to the angle of the dock to bottom beams. I haven't measured any yet, but it looks like about 4ft from dock to the boat plus the 10ft boat width plus the 2ft. extra. That comes to about 16ft. times four. Your lift seems to be out of compliance to me. I believe my canal to be 40ft.

[There is a difference between black and nigger] How noble of you to say so--and ignorant.  What an asinine post!  If you are going to start calling African-Americans various nicknames of your choosing, maybe the “white girl” with bra straps displayed or the “white” males with their boxers hanging out are actually hillbillies, rednecks, trailer trash, etc.  I’m sorry but there is a difference between a “white” person and a redneck, just as there is a difference between “black” and “nigger.”  One label describes skin color.  The other is a negative label implying unfavorable behaviors.  I find it alarming that this website allows such inflammatory posts.

This video is aptly named USA Wake Up!
http://www.usawakeup.org/

Evacuate? It would take a Category 11 for us to leave. If we were positive it was going to hit us we might leave at a Cat 4, but there are too many false alarms and it’s too costly to leave every time they tell us to. Many times they’ve told us to evacuate to Miami only to have Miami get hit hard and the Keys spared. It’s like a lottery. Plus they don’t let you return to your homes, sometimes for days, after the storm and I’d find not knowing if we still had a home, unbearable. They should have built hurricanes shelters down here years ago instead of widening the 18 Mile Stretch.

[The place where you live is coming apart at the seams because of incompetent and crooked politicians]  That pretty much sums up the state of the planet.

By attempting to convert one of history's worst animal abusers into an animal advocate, we have before us a solution that can result in a sanctuary for abused, abandoned, rescued, and forgotten fighting dogs. Such a shelter can only provide good things, and the penalty for Mr. Vick's abuse will be for him to finance the construction of, and continuing operation of that sanctuary.  His $13 million salary will be dedicated to that end. Should he not play football this year, there will be no sanctuary.  There will be no healing.

The prosecutor in the Michael Vick case is Mike Gill.  Mr. Gill's Phone: 1-804-819-5443,  FAX: 1-804-771-2316

Together, we can make this sanctuary happen. From evil, we can create good. Please let this be worth your while to make your statement.

These are new fines that were implemented on 8/1/07 for the State of Florida:
1. As of 08/01/07 cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving. Ticket is $285. They will be looking for this like crazy - easy money for police department.
2. Cell phone use in the construction zone. - Double fine as of 08/01/07. Cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving.
3. Carpool lane - 1st time $1,068.50 starting 8/1/07 (The $271 posted on the highway is old). Don't do it again because 2nd time is going to be double, 3rd time triple and 4th time license suspended.
4. Incorrect lane change - $380. Don't cross the lane on solid lines or intersections. Block intersection - $485.
5. Driving on the shoulder - $450.
6. Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts - both passengers and drivers get tickets.
7. Speeders can only drive 3 miles above the limit.
8. DUI (Driving under Influence=JAIL and stays on your driving record for 10 years!)

[When to evacuate] What Number? No Number. This is our home. We'll stick it out.

[Worst commercial] Radio commercial for a KW food delivery (the ad was so bad they never made it clear what they did). They spent the whole ad telling us how they want us to order their food, to “speak clearly”, etc. It was insulting, like if we didn’t order precisely they way they wanted, they wouldn’t do business with us and we were jerks. If they don’t have any patience with the public they’d better get out of the business (whatever it is).

[Cuban immigrants] 37 more reasons as to why the average Joe will have more difficulty finding a job, landed at Smathers Beach yesterday.  It has become way past the time we adopt some new immigration laws. Castro will live forever. I will not accept Spanish as our national language. I will no longer pay federal income tax. If you want to live here, please, please learn to speak English!

[Sewage System] People should pay for volume. Meaning if you flush a lot it will cost a lot. That would make it fair in my opinion.

A quick, poison-free way to get rid of fire ants:  I just boil a tea kettle of water and pour it onto the mound. It beats spraying pesticide or using gasoline, which I heard  many folks use on them.

[Stupid boat lifts and Old Milwaukee and watch where you are driving] This is typical of the ignorant. All you care about is your stupid self. I hope I run into your dull, non-reflecting, no safety markers lift some night. I not only will own you, but you will wish you never bought that oversized contraption in the first place.

Betz has a new dog.

I have to agree with the person who thinks a waiter or waitress asking if you need change is just rude.  I bartended many years and will think nothing of leaving 30% or more if I get good service.  If I am asked "Do you need change" I will lower the tip to well below the 15%.   When I am brought my bill I never ask "Do you expect a tip" so why should the server ask if I need change.

[What number does it take for you to hit the road?]  The worst mess I've seen was from a tropical storm, not a hurricane that even qualified for a number.  "Run from the water, hide from the wind".  Evacuation should consider more than wind speed, flooding is a greater danger!

An archeological team, digging in Islamorada, has uncovered 10,000 year old bones and fossil remains of what is believed to be the first Politician. (This is in no way meant to reference to our County Administrator.)

After spending the last five days in Key West, I realized why the Keys are dying. It is not greed, or tourism, or development or political egos. It is just plane dirt and dirty people. The Keys are now full of low rent trash who have pushed out the old locals who appreciated this paradise, but were too lazy to protect it. We deserve the New World Keys!

Well, another Redneck Prom has come and gone.

The prize for the rudest server I ever had would have to go to one who was at Bahama Jacks back when they were open.  She was taking my order and answered her cell phone in mid order having an argument with the person on the other end of the phone while at my table.

We are biking up and down shady mountain roads this month. We wish you all were here with us! These country folks are infective, and so is the slow life.

Please remember that the next ABATE meeting is Sept. 9th, at the BPK Moose lodge. They will be serving up breakfast before the 11am meeting, and they are good cooks!  The ABATE birthday party is Nov. 4th at the DAV in Marathon, following our meeting there. Always a good time.  And, of course, the Toy Run is on Nov. 25th this year, and we want it to be our best one ever.  Here we are in front of our little house here with our brother and sister-in-law from Colorado.

Confusion reigns supreme on the subject of the stock market.  “Rising on the average of 10% a year” you are comparing apples to oranges. When they said the market has risen about 10% annually, on average, they are not talking about the Dow Jones they are talking gross profit--a vast difference, if the Dow rose an average of 10% a year it would now be approximately 256,000. Just going back to about 1955, if one went back further it would be probably triple that. Do the math.

[Hillary v Rudy] Rudy never claimed to have spent more time at “ground zero” than did the all volunteers.  He did say that he spent a “helluva lot of time” there.  He did.  He did praise the great and heroic work of the volunteers and professionals.  Rudy did spend a pile of bucks on NYC, he took it from being a crime besotted sewer to being one of the safest mega cities in the world.  Rudy favors “winning” in Iraq and defeating world wide terrorism.  Rudy has accomplishments.  Hillary favors capitulation and negotiation with terrorist.  Hillary believes that government is brighter and more responsible than the governed.  Rudy favors smaller government and lower taxes (we all know for certain that those precepts are pure poison to Hillary).  Rudy apparently has a piss poor record as a husband, but Hillary most certainly is prepared to accept being lied to and humiliated time after time.  These are not desirable character traits for a wannabe leader of our great nation.  It appears that Hillary’s anger response is lamp throwing and screeching at subordinates.  Again, not problem solving behavior.  We all know that Hillary supporters are convinced that she is one of the most accomplished humans on the face of the earth.

Please educate the unbelievers as to her accomplishments that have actually bettered our society.

[Dead Parakeet] He's not dead, he's merely resting. Or pining for the fjords.

My name is Shelly I worked at Key Deer Bar & Grill.  For anyone wondering what's going on there, well I'd just like to say Betty (my mother) and I are no longer there.  I supposedly quit, and she got fired over a lame excuse.  The reason given to her by Rick a new partner, was that she didn't charge the band for their drinks.  Which, by the way, the bands have always drank for free, we just void the check at the end of the night.  Just ask any of the entertainment that plays there.  But she transferred the check to the next bartender, because the band was still playing when she finished her shift at 11 p.m.  But above and beyond that, we weren't getting our pay on time or when we did get paid we received 2 checks that were written on an account first from TIB bank, which wouldn't cash due to non-sufficient funds; and was eventually closed because of the longtime negative balance.  When we brought this to the attention of Clay and Rick (the business owners of Key Deer) they asked for the checks and said they'd cash them.  I cashed mine out of the drawer at the end of the night.  But they never cashed Betty’s or gave the checks back. Then on Aug 8 we each received a check. Mine was for 2 weeks, and hers for 4 weeks (which still did not bring her pay current)  written from Keys Federal, that yet again would not cash due to non-sufficient funds. Betty is still owed 11 days of pay and about eight weeks of paycheck stubs for her and about five or six weeks for me.  Supposedly they’re being sent by certified mail. --shelmt@yahoo.com

As for people’s fears about homeless people, a lot of what’s going on is pride and prejudice. But there is fear, as well, and I’m going to speak to the whole shebang.

I start by saying that everything dramatically shifted in Key West toward the chronic homeless immediately following 911. It was palpable. I witnessed it first hand. Before 911, we were allowed to sleep outside, even in doorways in Old Town. After 911, we were hunted like animals at night. Why? People were terrified, had no effective way to deal with their terror except by displacing it onto something nearby. Homeless people were nearby. GoodMorningKeyWest.com

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky all week until the Boat Poker Run, then it got lousy. What bad luck for the organizers who worked so hard to make this first time fun event possible. I predicted that there would be about twenty boats the first year, but I don’t know how many actually showed up because of that lousy weather. I hope the Rotary Club doesn’t get discouraged and will try it again next year.

I hate to, but I have to disagree with the person suggesting we vote for Giuliani instead of Clinton. Giuliani left New York City deeply in debt with no way to pay the bills. He also grew the government payroll by 40% and that was before 9/11. We all know he said that he “spent more time at the 9/11 site then all of the volunteers", but he’s a dog and pony show. Clinton, at least, has said she would leave some troops outside Baghdad and let the Iraqis run the city to help and she’s more fiscally responsible then Giuliani. Like her or hate her, she really is the more conservative of the two candidates. America can’t screw up this election like we did the last time. Hillary’s the best option. Vote for your country not your party. I’m not a big fan of hers, but she seems a lot more sane then Rudy. He just doesn’t seem right.

[Stupid boat lifts] A boat lift takes up no more room in a canal than a boat docked along a sea wall.  That is why code allows for taking up to 25% of the canal width just like a boat with a 10 foot beam would.  As long as it is raised up out of the water when not in use, hitting it would be on your nickel and there would be no liability on the part of the lift owner.  Put down your Old Milwaukee and watch where you are driving.   There should be no conflict as long as you are following the rules of navigation.  A little local knowledge about what's in your canal doesn't hurt either.

[The vagrant threat] Yesterday’s Key West Citizen Editorial, followed by some comments from the peanut gallery: Key West Mayor Morgan McPherson is pushing hard on his recommendation that the city of Key West assume responsibility for Higgs Beach, a property owned and maintained by Monroe County, located at the intersection of White Street and Atlantic Boulevard. We heartily support his recommendation and we see no reason why the county would not be disposed to accommodate him if the City Commission votes approval of his proposed resolution at its meeting Tuesday night.

The writer who mentioned the 500 million tons of Saddam's munitions the US let the insurgents take didn’t mention the 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles and pistols, bought with our money that have gone missing; or the 80,000 Glock pistols that we bought and are missing too. Yea, Bush sure knows what he’s doing and hires the best men to do the job! You can trust him.

Police are looking for a badly burned bicycle thief who's genitals and anal areas might be in dire need of medical attention. It seems a bicycle owner booby-trapped his bicycle seat with incendiary explosives because he was sick and tired of losing his new bikes to thieves on a monthly basis. No names were given, but all emergency rooms have been notified. I considers the bike owner a hero!

[Get over yourself; it was just a large lizard]  Lesson learned. If you reply to ridiculous postings it seems to draw out the mental midgets from the mangroves. Surprise? Not only do some have electricity, some even have a PC, and there's the few that even have a keyboard, proving that some people shouldn't be allowed in the same room with that keyboard.

[Insurgent weapons] That reminds me of when during the Vietnam war the Australians placed close to twenty thousand anti-personnel land mines along a de-militarized zone then failed to secure the area for lack of troops. The enemy eventually figured out how to disarm, then re-arm them. Close to 500 of our guys were killed by our own mines that were used against us by the North Vietnamese.

Do men think that a women’s bra strap hanging out is sexy?  As a women I think it’s gross.  Here it is the first day of school and this young girl I know is walking down the street with a black bra on under a white shirt, and she thinks she looks good.  I know she has an attentive father.  Why does he let her dress like that?  Why do fathers think that look is ok?  Doesn't this society have any pride anymore?  Why do our young boys think that wearing their underwear out and talking like an uneducated nigger from jail is cool?  Why are we glorifying that mentality of violence and ignorance?  I have asked a few young white men why they want to be niggers. It's the mentality of the kids I worry about. (There is a difference between black and nigger. I respect black people. Hard working, well educated, self-supporting.  I even admire those people; they have a grace and class that we, as white people, will never have. They have had a lot more issues to overcome and they overcame them) It’s too bad they are not the ones glorified by society.

A hurricane relief effort has been established in response to the impending onslaught of Hurricane Dean in Jamaica.  Warren and Abby Leamard have launched an initiative to collect non-perishable, ready-to-eat items and personal care items to assist those in need.

We hope to help as many as possible to rebuild their lives. This effort reaches out to the entire community to provide a medium that will help.   Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.  Every little bit can make a difference.

Donations are being accepted at Coco Palms, Jamaican Me Hungry 300 Front Street. Key West.  For more information, please contact Chef Warren Leamard at (305) 923-1906 or e-mail Jamhungry1@aol.com

So is it racial profiling or the odds of probability that 50% of all homicide victims in the USA are black and they only make up 13 percent of the population?

Why is it that in every election, we have to vote for the lesser of the two evils instead of the most qualified candidate? Career politicians are what's ruining our country. They only care about getting re-elected, power and lining their pockets. If campaign promises were made under oath and breaking them meant removal from office, along with unshackling ourselves from the 2 party system and eliminating career politicians thru term limits, our country would be much better off. I know this will never happen because they, that have the power, won’t give it up.

[Fire Ants] Self-rising corn meal works fine. Pour it in a circle around the mound.  It takes longer than the very expensive stuff, but it’s much safer and cheaper.  You will need to re-apply it after a big rain, of course.  I think the self-rising quality of it causes it to swell in the ants' little bellies and kills them.  I've used it successfully many times.

[On the subject of tipping] I think it's pretty unprofessional to ask a person if they need change; and it's amazing how many waitresses ask you this question. Bring me all my change and I will tip you accordingly.

I heard this, did you hear this?  They are going to be doing a scratch-off lottery ticket for the sewer effort and it's going to be called, the “Lot Turd Tree”.  You scratch off the fruit spots on the tree to see if you get 3 like amounts to win and you get a "double the amount" bonus if you expose a turd!  I also heard they have one in the works where you rub off the little toilet seats to see if you get a "flush" to win!  How cool is that?

[Does Rudy Giuliani have that same "sneaky, stooped" look as Nixon]   Yes, he absolutely does!  I keep expecting to see a little "mini-mustache" to appear under his nose too.  Lots of people hate Rudy, including his own children and the NY firefighters that he pretends to embrace. Rudy has the potential to be worse than GW.  Check out his idea on freedom:  "Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do and how you do it.”  Is it just me, or is that more like the opposite of freedom? That guy scares me.

Why aren't people evacuating Jamaica?  How many of you down here will leave if a Category 4 is heading straight towards us?  Our stuff is not worth losing our lives over and I think we will evacuate.  We stayed for Wilma which people say was an anomaly and will not happen again for many years.  I do not know what to do.  It costs a lot of money to stay in a hotel and if the bridges go out we're stuck up there in Miami hell.  Which is worse?  Maybe we should stock-up and stay home no matter what.  What number does it take for you to hit the road?

I can't believe it! The Key's that I loved so much could be so full of whining pansies. I wrote a post about the Catholic Church the other day, but Ed didn't post it. I wanted somebody to pray for me too. The place where you live is coming apart at the seams because of incompetent and crooked politicians, and all you can do is whine about a lousy alligator and the stupid sewer line.

There are thousands of alligators on the mainland. Just go up to Tamiami trail and catch one. As far as the sewers are concerned, don't worry about it. If you all don't wake up real soon, you won't have a place to shit anyway! Those units that Lyle Starr was selling worked real well, and didn't have an impact on the environment. If people who have those have to pay to hook up to a sewer, they are being screwed. I think this is a scheme to camouflage all the money that is missing, and line some pockets. Pretty soon most Key's people will walk pigeon-toed.

[trimming along the canal to 4ft. of the edge by the property owner.] The law is flush with the sea wall. All canals have to maintain full width clearance for navigation. How the hell those stupid metal boat lifts got passed into law, beats me. They are killers. I can't wait until some kid gets his face mashed by an I beam. Also, cutting back canal growth pass the sea wall edge is illegal by the EPA. Cut it flush!

[On the subject of tipping]  I always use 20% as a guide for tipping a server, provided the service was acceptable. And I am pretty lenient with what I consider to be bad service. I go to a certain restaurant pretty often, and I can see the difference in the service level from server to server. One will constantly refill or offer to refill my coffee, another has her head planted in butt-land and you have to ask for coffee several times and have a hard time getting her attention. But this is no big deal to me. The second one is younger and while she is pleasant, she lacks the experience and focus, but she will get pretty much the same tip.  The question I have is this:  if I order something for takeout and I am not having it delivered; I feel that there is no tip involved whatsoever.

This question came about when the young lady who handed me my order was just assuming that she could keep the change.  I disagree with that. By virtue of handing me a bag, you are not providing service. Am I wrong? Another thing that irks me is the number of places that put out a tip jar that really has no business being there at all.  Is it necessary for me to tip you for simply doing your job? Is there an extreme skill level in handing me my laundry or selling me a soft drink (unless you are a bartender)? Waitresses, bartenders, delivery drivers, musicians are the ones that deserve tips; and once again, if they do their job well and provide service. So am I wrong?  Does the girl deserve a tip for handing me a bag? What about the cook who made this food? What do you think?

Type a doggy command and see what happens. Sit, roll over, down, stand, sing, dance, shake, fetch, play dead, sneeze, jump, walk, beg, paw, wave, up, etc. It's also very cute if you type in a command that's not recognized. Make sure you type in "Kiss" too, but do it last. Click here: I Do Dog Tricks

[home repair experience]  After having several bad experiences with local auto repair shops (overcharging, work not performed, shoddy service, etc.) I was referred by a friend to Lube on the Move.  (They come to your location and perform the service work on-site)  I called them for my scheduled service and also requested a new battery be installed.  The service truck was 10 minutes early for the scheduled appointment, the service was done in a prompt, professional manner by a knowledgeable auto tech and the charge was in line with other local service places.  No sitting around in a greasy waiting area, no excuses for not getting the work done timely as promised and no sales pitch for extras.  I recommend Lube on the Move.  They can be reached at 296-5823

The Indian Mound Estates homeowners and renters picnic and B-B-Q is today (Sunday 8/19) at 4pm at the boat ramp/pavilion area. The association will provide hot dogs and hamburgers. Bring drinks and a dish to pass (simple is fine!). Don't be shy, stop by. Get reacquainted with long-time neighbors and meet new ones. Let's talk about the necessary safety improvements for our common area. Keeping it up improves our property values, but more importantly, our quality of life in the neighborhood. It's a great place to live. For more info call Bobby at 923-1430
As Hurricane Dean heads toward Jamaica and then to who knows where, I am to be a guest on Island 107 radio this afternoon (Sunday) from 4:30 to 5 pm. Isand 107 will be interviewing candidates for some weeks, up to the election. I hope Key Wert folks tune into those interviews and candidate interviews aired by other radio and television stations, and attend candiate forums, such as those to be sponsored by Hometown! PAC at Tropic Cinema. My experience on the campaign trails has been that a great deal can be learned about canddiates in "live ammo" situations such as spontaneous interviews and candidate forums, which might not be learned from the more traditional forms of campaign advertising. --Paid political advertisement Sloan Bashinsky for Mayor GoodMorningKeyWest.com

I like that cold wave Saturday. I turned my ceiling fan down to two and covered my shins with a cloth it was so cold, below 90, I think.

Hillman Wonders of the World

I’m glad that mankind is finally turning the corner on the planet’s health (read: global warming). I’ve been bitching about this for a long time and I am now optimistic that I’ll probably see some results of this change in thinking before I die. All we have to do is all think in the same direction and that is harmony.

The average American consumes about forty pounds of Everglades’ sugar a year. That’s how big a political force Big Sugar is.

You see, politics are the whole problem. Because of politics (which are necessary) we don’t live balanced with nature. We have to dominate to exist. What a pity. If we could live in balance with the planet we would be happier.

[Where do the insurgents get all their explosives] When Saddam fell and the American invaders failed to secure his arsenals, insurgents picked up about 500 million tons of bombs, artillery shells and ammunition that were, basically, left lying around.

[cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies] This rumor has been circulating forever.  Check it out on http://www.snopes.com

In the wake of this dog fighting ring involving NFL Superstar Vick and the NBA gambling referees, can anyone remind me what had happened to legendary MLB baller Pete Rose -- the costs, penalties, etc.? I just can't help but wonder why, with Vick, the courts have chosen not to charge him with federal gambling counts. A year's plea seems a sweet deal.  I think of some of the people I have known who it appears have done far less and have received far more penalties.

[BBQ on Cudjoe] You're right, it is easy to miss. It's a little white wagon-thing like you might see at a street fair and it sits right there in the corner of the lot where that garden store is. Turn onto Blimp Road and it's on your immediate right. Definitely worth looking for.

I would really like to know how that fire ant killer works. You have to wet it. What does wetting do? Does it make the nodules swell an be tasty? Do the ants bring the morsels back to the queen?

The new formula for the Super Exemption would exempt 75 percent of the first $200,000 in property value — with a minimum exemption of $50,000 — and then 15 percent of the next $300,000 in value. The tax savings with the proposed amendment is high on the lower end. It's too high.  The legislature in their haste failed to provide a plan that would spread the relief to all property taxpayers.  It seems the legislature of 2007 only has slightly better foresight than their forefathers who thought up “Save Our Homes”.   Their vision is no farther than the next election.  The more expensive a home and the faster its appreciation, the sooner the Save Our Homes scenario would be more beneficial.

Residents of Florida are much better without the Super Exemption in the long run, especially those in Monroe County.

One of Alaska's most active volcanoes could be working toward a massive eruption that could affect air travel but was not expected to threaten any of the towns in the area, scientists said Thursday.

Adrienne and David of Injade are going out of town for the week, so this announcement is a bit early for you good rock 'n roll folks out there.... still we'll be in the boonies of Wisconsin at a national forest campground called Lost lake, with no internet access at all, thus the early notice!

Injade will be back at the Looe Key Tiki Bar next Friday night August 24th.  And Saturday night August 25th we'll be at Sloppy Joe's in KW from 5:30-9:30. Sunday August 26th from 1:30-5:30 Injade will be poolside at Dante's in KW. So drink and swim by the pool with us on Sunday, and or any of these other dates. You know we love to party with you! Of course, Adrienne will be back at the Parrotdise Sunday night August 26th, playing solo in a more mellow fashion. See you there!

[cell phone numbers released to telemarketing companies] They always were released, but you did not get any marketing call, just paper mail advertising.  The law says if a phone number is published in the public phone book, is fare game to all for any use.  Sounds to me it is time to teach these marketing whores a lesson. Any marketer who bugs my phone will get their email address published internationally in hope they get bombarded with irate feedback. I can play that game too!

To the fellow who is so well versed on the status of Generals in the US Army.  I am very impressed by this useless knowledge as I am sure so many other people are. "It was just a big lizard, get over it."  You are what is wrong with the whole situation.  I was in the army, and I served in Viet Nam and was decorated but had the sense to get out when my tour was up.  The words: "Wildlife Preserve" should have some meaning. This was not a nuisance animal roaming the canals and eating small dogs. It was a peaceful, benign animal protected by law.  I do not know what the outcome of the sentencing was but I am sure it was no where tough enough.  If I showed up at work and wore my medals of honor, I would still be an a--hole.

When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is  black, that is not racial profiling; it is the Law of Probability.

[Fine points of the law] The New Zealand Herald reported in June that a prostitute may be eligible for worker's compensation based on her having been injured when the car in which she was riding plunged down a hillside. Because the driver was a john who was taking her to a site he had chosen for their encounter, the Prostitutes Collective trade union said hers were "workplace" injuries.

[Get over yourself; it was just a large lizard]  Well, that statement let everyone know what kind of person is responding about the army reservists.  I guess we are supposed to take your word, an anonymous poster,  that you served in the Army for 30 years, and therefore know more than the judge, who indicated he was in the military.  You've got to be one of Milo's Army buddies.  I think you need to get over yourself.

[to the disgruntled restaurant patron] Did it ever occur to you that maybe you are an a**hole and the servers don't want to deal with you? Hold on, let me break out the violins.

[Stuffed Pig] If you know their name you can look it up on the County appraiser website.

Hugs not drugs. http://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=19853

[it was just a big lizard] That statement is so wrong on many levels. I guess 30 years in the Army didn't produce a person that can comprehend the depravity of torturing animals. Will you be a character witness for Michael Vick? Anyway, I've just got 4 words for you.

I liked the idea of suspending the TDC until our sewers were paid for. But don’t get your hopes up because the hospitality industry has most of the commissioners in its pocket. They would never ask Tallahassee to back-burner the TDC under any circumstances.

We got crabs, ointment too.

[Why do all you Keys people expect outsiders to pay for your sewers] Because we’re being forced, against our will, by the State. We already paid for our septic systems that were inspected by the County. The State should pay for what it demands.

NPR reported that there have been over nine hundred suicides of Iraq veterans and no one’s talking about it.

[Paradise lost] I left the FL. Keys 1 1/2 years ago after living there for 23 years and cried all the way up US 1. Now I know I made the right decision after reading the Big Pine Web site and the Key West paper. I do not know the Keys anymore thanks to Mr. Willi. I hope the commission meetings are overflowing with enraged citizens and the commissioners are truly listening to them. If not, there should be a county shake-up at the next elections, if not before. The only commissioner who truly cares about the Keys and its residents is George Nugent. He always did. Wake up people or your paradise will be no more. It’s on its way out now!

A good candidate for a lawyer to represent Michael Vick. Mama_’n_em Video

The guy that has lived here for under a year and feeds the fish is an arrogant moron.

Could someone please tell me if the people who own the Stuff Pig also own several rental properties?

[Killing alligator in animal refuge] There are about fifty Army Major Generals (2 star rank) that are reservists serving on active duty. I'm sure that they will be quite surprised to learn that they are not "careerists". They are the state Adjutant Generals. Any private that goes to Sergeant in 2 years is, at the least, a good soldier. The Army will not bump up just anyone fill a vacancy. I only served in the Army over 30 years, so what do I know? Get over yourself; it was just a large lizard!

[Fish Cutters Gossip] I heard the same thing, that they would not be re-opening.  I heard they are just saying that, Like PT's are doing. They have a sign that says Gone Fishing, but heard they were done for.

[The Duct Tape Bandit] Here's the news video link http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=44c_1187175321

I know the gay girl at Boondocks. She doe's always smile and she is a nice person. There is one thing you should know; she doe's have a girlfriend. I know her girlfriend too. They have been together for a while. So I guess your out of luck, but you could try Key West there are lots of girls down there. Good luck.

Here’s the truth about the gambling boat stuck in the mangroves. We have been in contact with the state of Florida trying to work a tourist angle. Mainly, making the old gambling boat the Mangrove Pie world headquarters. Everything was going ok until we got to the part about the off ramp and the bridge out to the boat and how to finance it. We suggested a one penny increase in the sales tax (what the hell, a penny here, a penny there, who cares). The boys in Tallahassee seemed to like the idea, especially if they could sneak the sewer deal in behind it. We felt that something was starting to smell, but figured as long as we were getting the first scoop of ice cream, it was ok with us. So if you see a bridge being built out to the gambling boat, you'll know the sewer deal is in like flint. Oh, yeah, the smoke that was coming from the gambling boat a few weeks ago was because we left a couple of pies in the oven too long, no big deal.

[I need a book] John Vieles’ books are available everywhere. When in doubt, use the library or check out stores that commercialize the "old Keys".

It truly must be nice to be so far down the canal system that the tides wash your fish entrails and septic water out to sea, leaving the water so clean you can see the little fishies frolic and feed. Please take the time to take a boat ride up to the other end of the system and I think you will be shocked how opaque and lifeless the water is.

On another canal note, the law requires the trimming of the growth along the canal to within, I believe, 4ft. of the edge by the property owner. I know there are a lot of people that don't own boats on the system, however, that doesn't relieve the responsibility. Please get the trees out of the canal. This is the law. Code enforcement is the next move, and from what I've heard, you don't want them to show up to insist that you comply. They will almost certainly find something else to write you up for.

The stock market, historically, has risen an average of 10% a year. The Stock market was near 11,000 when Bush became President in Jan 2001. Bush has been president for 6 1/2 years. If the market continued to rise at its historic average, it should be well above 17,500 now.

If limestone is such a good filter that it can cleanse the by-products of Ocala and surrounding villages that it gets the water to exit Silver Springs at 99.95% pure, then I don't see why we need a better sewer system than what we have. There is nothing but porous rock here in the Keys. Or maybe the water from the spring is ancient water that has been circulating and filtering itself for millennia.

[Bigamy refined] Have you noticed that all the major Republican candidates have had multiple marriages? Every one except the Mormon!

Reggie Miller
may join the Celtics!  If this happens I will become a groupie again and sit courtside watching him score three pointers and getting a ring this time.  That's what I'm talkin’ about!

The administration is at odds with Iran for allegedly supplying weapons to the insurgents in Iraq.  Refresh my memory, but didn't Reagan bag man Oliver North sell weapons to Iran in order to finance the Contras in Nicaragua?  What goes around comes around.  I'll bet you won't get this connection on FOX News.

The first word I should hear from my server is, "Hello" and not a napkin thrown down asking what I want to drink.  Why are some of these people in businesses where they have to deal with the public when they obviously hate people so much?  (This goes for nasty nurses too.)  Another tip for you unfriendly servers, don't carry my drink over with your fingers all over the rim of the glass.  Try holding the stem, you moron.  When someone requests ground pepper on their salad, it's your job to work the pepper mill, not place it on the table.  I'm not asking for a hug or for you to act like my new best friend.  From now on I am going to speak directly to the owner and not leave such generous gratuities for bad service.  My strong opinion is that they just want young stupid people and shy away from hiring the over forty servers.

[BBQ] I've read the positive reports on this site about a BBQ emporium on Cudjoe.  I thought that it was supposed to be near Blimp Road.  We went looking for Q tonight and wound (rhymes with injury) up at Coco's Cantina.  Now, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't BBQ.  What is the name of the BBQ house, where is it, and is really worth finding?

Is it me or does Rudy Giuliani have that same "sneaky, stooped" look that Nixon had? Now he's comparing himself to the first responders at the World Trade Center, saying he was there as much as they were. Don't even go there Rudy. You couldn't shine their shoes. You can pull that "America's Mayor" crap on the great unwashed, but you don't fool me.  Let's hope America has come to its senses and doesn't elect another Republican. And if we do, please don't let it be him. Go Hilary! Ahhhh, now I feel better.

[GWB tax cuts have generated loads of bucks] Someone hasn’t spoken with the country’s States’ governors. What color’s the sky there?

Do not fear the end is not near at Lost Cargo Trading Post.  We have plenty of tomatoes right now. I've got some from the Carolinas and soon will get some from Tennessee and then we will be back in the Florida area again.

At first I thought that some of the talk about diverting funding from the TDC to Keys sewer projects was just plain crazy.  But then, if funding was stopped to the TDC, do you think that the Tourist would stop coming, or the fisherman find another destination or the nature lovers a better area of the country? I doubt it. Just look around and see what a great job the TDC has done over the years.  The Florida Keys are known world wide as a great place to visit. You could shut down that funding for 5 years and not notice a decline in the number of tourist coming to visit. Free up the needed money for our mandated sewers.

4 days from today all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. You will be charged for these calls from telemarketers. To prevent this call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. This is the same number for your home phone’s Do Not Call list. You can also register on their website www.donotcall.gov . If, after 31 days, you receive a telemarketer’s call you can file a complaint at the website.

[Isn’t it hard enough and tiring enough to go from here to Miami] Those 2 inconveniences are equal; however Miami makes money on our trip there. We should be as kind to them and make some money for their "Inconvenience" by putting in a toll booth.

I just played a movie I haven't watched in years.  It is, in my opinion, the ultimate male bonding movie for those of us who grew up in the late 60s and early 70s.  It's called "Big Wednesday".  Watch it and tell me if I'm wrong.

[Football season] This site is getting to cereal...I mean serious.
Can you smell the Bratwurst in Green Bay, the Sushi in San Diego and the smell of Terrible Towels waving in Pittsburgh? (God bless Myron Cope.)
Yep, its Football time again, finally!
So here's the seasons locks and guarantees:
AFC
North - Cincinnati. That's as far as they go. If they all make bail.
South - Indianapolis. What's so southern about almost being in Canada?
East - New England. No matter what you say the "tuck rule” call still sucked, But, then, they are tough at home.
West - San Diego. No more Marty ball may mean a championship.
Wildcards
Jacksonville - They always choke in the end.
Pittsburgh - How's Ben's head?
NFC
North - Minnesota. Nope, I'm not drinking. yet.
South - Carolina. Have to pick someone in that horrible division.
East - Dallas. What's so “east” on the border of Mexico and New Mexico?
West - Seattle. Even with the biggest crybaby coach in football history.
Wildcards
Philadelphia. The boo Santa Claus curse continues.
St. Louis Rams. Now they could surprise everyone.
Super Bowl. (Drum roll please) Forget it. San Diego crushes Seattle
There it is folks. Bet the house, car, boat, the wife. I take back the wife part, they have to bring the beer and buy the chips.
Now back to the tax increase…

China has banned Buddhist monks from reincarnating without government permission. They feel that by barring any Buddhist monk living outside China from seeking reincarnation, the government will be able to choose the next Dali Lama. This law is to prevent the real Dali Lama, who lives in India, from having political and religious influence over the Tibetans in the future.
Hometown PAC is strictly a volunteer organization with no staff. The events we host cost money (i.e. $600 for food at Dante's for this Friday's event), renting the Tropic for forums, etc. Maintaining a website also incurs costs. I don't think it is unreasonable to ask for membership donations. Our Board Members are busy people, volunteering their time with the best of intentions. Thank you for taking the time to understand.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday at Dante's and at the Tropic Cinema.

I had a great pizza yesterday from 2 for 20 Pizza. I hadn’t eaten there in several months, I don’t know if they changed anything, but it sure was good. I woke up this morning thinking about it and had to tell someone besides my dog, although she is a good listener.

On a nicer note, I was a Mangrove Mama's for the first time since the new owners took over and had a really nice evening with friends from Ohio and our server, Kaydee, was delightful.

A poster asked what supporters of GWB’s economic policies think of the current stock market situation.  A good question!  I assume that the poster believes that GWB’s policies are responsible for the current market situation.  I also assume that the poster is not a Bush fan.

Here’s the facts:
In January of 2000, near the end of the Clinton administration, the stock market began a slide that temporarily bottomed out at about 8850 in September of 2001.  The market then began a rally until March of 2002; then it plummeted to a low of about 7591 in September of 2002, (about the time of the beginning of the GWB tax program).  Since that low, the market has reached historic heights, topping out above 14k a few days ago.  Since that historic high, the market has corrected to about 12850 at the close of business Thursday.  A correction of about 8% from it’s high.  Put another way, the market, right now, is about 70% above its 09/02 lows.  So, poster, to answer your question:  I like GWB’s tax cuts, the cuts have generated tons of new bucks for the treasury.

By the way, I suggest spreading peanut butter between your toes, it might cut the bile, and make the foot in mouth taste a little better.

Thanks Mr. Neugent for standing up to Willi and not allowing them to cut the funds for lighting at the Sugarloaf school.  You’re right, we have been denied quality recreation for our youth for too long.  Which reminds me, when are we going to get Mariners Park developed?  The money has been set aside for many years.  I am under the impression that the permits have been released.  Never mind that all the families will be gone by the time it’s done. (Sorry about the cynicisms, it must be something in the water.)

[The Constant Gardener]
This past Wednesday’s Keynoter brought yet another description of me as a candidate for Mayor of Key West: the perpetual candidate, a preacher. Some time ago, Key West Citizen labeled me the perennial candidate. I don’t recall every calling myself a preacher. Priest, minister, yes, those terms I have used. But preacher? Well, perhaps the Keynoter is onto something. Maybe in more ways than one, actually. GoodMorningKeyWest.com

[Highway toll]  I heard this morning that Mr. Saunders does not want the 1cent tax, as he wants some sort of bond issue to come into play first.  That sounds good to this single mom.  But then they talked about the Feds wanting to make the Keys a National Park. You can bet if they make us a park they won't have any problem putting up a toll booth.  Someone asked why workers should be exempt from the toll.  Cause they have to pay for the hook-up and the taxes to maintain the system. Again the lack of government decision making has cost us such a costly increase in this issue.  We should have started over 10 years ago with this project.  We would have been done by now and the reef would be healthier then it is.  But then 20 years ago I wanted to see a no growth moratorium placed on all the Keys not just Big Pine.  (First they would not let them develop BP, now they are shoving it down our throats.)  The sewers need to come, and quickly, but I won't be able to stay much longer.

[Your Honor my client is a idiot and hopefully will never reproduce] Laughter might be unexpected in a Kentucky liquor store where a robbery just occurred. But that's how employees responded to the "Duct Tape Bandit" who hit Shamrock Liquors in Ashland and fled nearly empty handed. A man who had his head wrapped in duct tape to conceal his identity walked into the store last Friday. Store manager Bill Steele had some duct tape of his own, but his was wrapped around a wooden club that sent the robber fleeing. Store employee Craig Miller said he chased the man to the parking lot, tackled him and held him in a choke position until police arrived. An unidentified customer also helped, police said.

Kasey G. Kazee, 24, was charged with first-degree robbery. Kazee denied he was the bandit who robbed the store of two rolls of change. Kazee pleaded not guilty Monday in Boyd County District Court and was ordered held under a $250,000 cash bond.

[they’re following us home anyway] Islamic extremists embedded in the U.S. posing as Hispanic nationals are partnering with violent Mexican drug gangs to finance terror networks in the Middle East, according to a DEA report.  An El Paso, Texas, law enforcement report documents the influx of approximately 20 Arab persons a week utilizing the Travis County Court in Austin to change their names and driver's licenses from Arabic to Hispanic surnames.

Since drug traffickers and terrorists operate in a clandestine environment, both groups utilize similar methodologies to function. There’s an ongoing scheme in which multiple Middle Eastern drug-trafficking and terrorist cells operating in the U.S. fund terror networks overseas, aided by established Mexican cartels with highly sophisticated trafficking routes.

[disgusting catholic comments] I must have missed that one, and I looked at the last few days’ posts. Anybody know what the comment was?

Why don't they take everything off the gambling boat that can hurt the environment and plant mangroves around it?  It would eventually disappear.

[telemarketer to Ms Inc] I get junk mail addressed to F. A. Mily (a weird version of family)

[an aerobatic sewer system] Actually, I wouldn't mind paying just to
see that one.  Let me know when you get it installed.

[take the TDC's money]  HA! HA! HA! Are you kidding? Once a political money-grabbing situation is formed, there is no way it can be touched. Politicians are for politicians and will bite the hands that feed them to the bone!

I read a good little paperback book about the history of the Keys and about Flagler building the railroad and all that. Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean.

Most homes that are rentals are second homes without a homestead exemption. Insurance rates will not go down for non-homestead properties.

Neal Boortz's Nuze:  Let's all refer to God as Allah http://boortz.com/nuze/index.html

How come no one has talked about the burning waste treatment system for homes? It is used all over the world on ships and in homes, and the ash is disposable anywhere. I bet if the gas company knew about this, it would be a great idea!

I agree that the TDC should be abolished.  Now how do we actually get together and do something about it?

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Gun control is a sharp eye and a steady hand.  Gun control is grouping all shots in the 10” Ring.  They can have mine when they pry it from my cold, dead hands!

I do not think a toll booth is the solution.  Have you ever gone to Miami to shop and tried to get back to the Keys at a certain time only to find too much traffic on the stretch or Card Sound?  How terrible it would be to sit for hours while people have to make change, ask for directions (and, yes, this happens on US1) just to get home?  Holiday traffic is always a nightmare. Now imagine having to sit behind all that traffic so the toll booth operators can see who does and does not have to pay.  Some would suggest something similar to a Sun Pass, but is there an alternative where you fly through without having to pay?

Face it, getting to the Keys some days is hard and tiring enough without having to pay a toll, or wait for those that do.  The construction going on only adds to the problem. We are in hurricane season and they are doing construction on Card Sound and you all down here already have seen the Stretch, it has a long way to go!

This link shows how much the track of a storm can change. Ernesto from last year was supposed to take a similar track to what they are predicting Dean to take, but instead it hooked north. You can watch how the meteorologists keep changing the track. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2006/graphics/al05/loop_5W.shtml

Why do all you Keys people expect outsiders to pay for your sewers?  It makes me glad that I moved out of that place called the Lower Keys when I read all the verbal diarrhea posted on this website.  Ideas like: only Monroe County residents should be able to participate in lobster week, and let's make all the tourists pay a toll to pay for our sewers. Stuff like that makes me glad that I got out when I did.  Now that windstorm rates are through the roof, and nobody can sell their house because the prices are so disgustingly inflated really gives me great comfort that I am not surrounded by a bunch of pompous whiners anymore.

Will UPS or FedEx take our properly packaged human waste and deliver it to Iraq?

[ask the federal Government for the toll] You mean the county government didn’t know that while they considered that option? Hmmm, believe them or you? Gee that’s a tough one, but I think I’m going to believe them.

How can you not like the caveman? I have said from the first time I saw him on TV that he is my kind of guy. He is smart, he is a good looking caveman and he has all his teeth. That is more then I can say about half the man in the keys. I can't wait for the show. Maybe you could learn something from the show and that would be not to judge the caveman. The caveman rocks!

Sewage System Toll Road Fee: $10.00
- $3 for Administration Expenses
- $3 for engineering and studies
- $1 for toll booth maintenance and construction
- $.50 for the politicians land rental
- $.50 for political favors
- $.50 Sewage System Redesign
- $.50 for labor
- $.50 profit loss insurance for the local businesses.
- $.25 for the 4 Lane Super Highway Idea to the Cuban Bridge
- $.25 for Sewage System

And there will still be a $128.00 per month dumping fee per household!

My wife’s corporate credit card says her Company Name Inc. and yesterday she received a call from a telemarketer who asked for Ms "Inc".

[Betty Cracker] My idea of a spaghetti sauce is to cook it slowly until the bell peppers, onions and tomatoes have dissolved and the color is a darker reddish-brown. This usual takes about 5-7 hours at minimum heat, on the stove top, uncovered. That’s real sauce like the Sicilians taught me.

Lisa at Lost Cargo Trading Post wants to remind us.

[Highway toll] The federal government does not allow local communities to place a toll on any roadway that receives federal funding.  That includes the Overseas Highway.   Every local government would do it if they could.  In the rare instances that they do allow a toll, the revenue may only be used for highway purposes.  To do so requires federal legislation.  Go ahead; tell them you want to use the money for sewers. They need a good laugh now and then.

[set aside time every week to take her osteoporosis pill]  Ya, that's a dumb one, but the part they don't mention about those pills is that you have to have an empty stomach and can't take any other pills or food or juice for half an hour.  Also, you can't go back to bed, because you aren't allowed to lay down for that half hour.  It just adds a bit of inconvenience to m'lady's morning schedule, but I guess the advertiser figured it was worth a pitch.

[To the Toll issue] $10 per car did not create a great funding stream. It needs to be in the neighborhood of $20 – $50 to really generate some money after the cost of operation was subtracted. (Cost of construction, administration cost of money collected, employees to collect the money, maintenance of facility, etc.)

As to why Dade County wants a piece of the action. It’s human nature to want some of the money if it’s being made on their turf. 11 miles of the 18 miles is in Dade County. In its completed form the 18 mile stretch will have two lanes out for evacuation purposes. Card Sound Rd could never, never accommodate that flow of traffic.

The State will not allow discrimination on toll collection; it will allow tag discounts to all in the form of annual discounts.

I am in support of your position on the environment and recognize the disregard for it. The one penny sales tax appears to be the way to go. To the person who thinks this, the sales tax, is a bad idea: Without a revenue source, individuals will have to pay the cost of installation including commercial connections to the tune of $20K per EDU, equivalent dwelling unit. I personally would prefer having tourist pay half my cost through the 1 penny sales tax. --Neugent-George@monroecounty-fl.gov

[lived here little under a year
] And you are going tell us what’s good and bad for the canal water? My pop’s been down here since the 1940s, me since the 70s and we both bag up and throw away all bug heads and fish carcasses. I will say this, anyone who throws anything in the canal for any reason is a total f**king idiot. Enough said.

Wacky McCrackers for president!  The skunk ape doesn’t have a chance.

A $10 dollar per car toll for the sewer bill?  That's some expensive shit.

Does anyone have any information about the giant algae bloom that covers Florida Bay from Key Largo to Long Key to the mainland coast? The fish and fish-eating birds have mostly disappeared from this area and the visibility is less than one foot.

Has anyone heard how Connie McSorley is doing?  I heard a while back that she was pretty sick.  My thoughts are with her.

Little Debbie’s at Fancie Seafood now so come by and see her there because Fishcutter closed for a long time. Good thing we’ve got good people to get good jobs.

No, it is cool that Commissioner Neugent and Administrator Willi take the time and care enough to have contact with Monroe County citizens through this forum.  I believe that they are trying to do what is best for the residents of Monroe County, which is not an easy task at the present time.

What are you breathing, drinking or eating now-a-days? Check the left hand column under Health Hazards, Chemical Profiles and input anything you use to kill bugs, wash cloths, etc. http://www.scorecard.org/

[Fish Cutters Gossip] Another one bites the dust. I have friends in the restaurant business and the word is that the owners are out and done.

[Sewer Lottery] Now that's the crap!

[abolish the TDC] Now this is the best idea I have seen here in a while. I mean, you would have to have lived in a deep dark cave all your life to not know about the Florida Keys. They've done their job.

[homesteaded residents and workforce families would be exempted ]  I'm trying to understand why those who would use the sewer the most would be exempted from paying anything towards it.

I am new to the keys. I have been here about a week and I was wondering if anyone knows who the gay girl is that works at Boondocks Grill? I think she is hot stuff. She always has a smile on her face and is always so happy. I hope someone could let me know something  about her.

[Boat Poker Run] Just stay out of your local watering hole Friday night and you ought to be able to get up bright and early.

Commissioner McCoy wants to connect the proposed sewers from Big Coppitt to Stock Island to the private sewer company called KW Resort Utilities even though KWRU does not comply with the 2010 standards. Something smells here more than the sewerage does.

Abolish the TDC.
They’re the reason we have so many problems here. Use the money for sewers.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment strips all nutrients from the waste water to almost drinking water quality – there are no nutrients in AWT water.

Yep, the gambling boat is going back out soon.

[Underground aquifer] This is a direct quote from your post "They don't have a clue where the water from the large springs up-state comes from." The water comes from the Floridian Aquifer. You did not state where the water from the aquifer comes or came from. Either way "they" do know. You are the one that does not. But I will give you a little hint. Think about rain, limestone, other rocks, minerals and lots of time. What you come up with is the Floridian and Biscayne aquifers. These aquifers are still getting replenished today by places called recharge areas. The aquifers and the water in them are there due to the processes of percolation and speleogenesis. Check this link out to learn more. If nothing more comes from these sewer posts at least everyone will learn something. http://www.floridasprings.org/anatomy/jow/

Why are women more attractive than men?

I agree with the take the TDC's money post. Even if they totally quit advertising the keys we would still be inundated with people. Its the hoards of tourists that impact the infrastructure. Take the TDC money to pay for the sewers.

[Irritating commercials] The cavemen suck big time and now they actually are putting a show on TV in the fall. Can you say “moronic”?

A boat poker run?  I finally have to comment.  Do we really want thousands of drunks on the water for a drinking event?

[Dear dogs and cats post] Dogs have masters. Cats have staff.

[Gambling boat] John the bartender at the Dockside told me that the Navy wanted to remove it as a training exercise but was nixed by the Refuge or someone like that.

[Update on Blue Hole alligator poachers]  Last Monday, August 6, Judge Mark Jones (who has been assigned the alligator poaching case since Judge Wayne Miller had to recuse himself) held a hearing, to listen to a new motion made by one of the defense attorneys.  The motion made by attorney Smith was for Jordan Milo's sentencing to be delayed until he came back from Iraq.  He tried to build up Milo's integrity by saying he wanted to be career Army, and that he had gone from a 0 to E5 (sergeant) in two years.  The judge said that since Milo is only an Army reservist, that is not exactly a "career" person, and he also said that if the Army had an E5 position open, and no one qualified for it, they could bump someone up that was not qualified.  He denied the motion, saying that this has gone on long enough.  The sentencing of both Milo and Goll will be Friday, September 7, at 8:45AM at the Key West courthouse on Whitehead St., Room B on 3rd floor.

Now is the time for everyone to put their actions where their mouths are, and show up, wearing something green to show unity.  In the meantime, mail or fax another letter to Judge Jones.  Refer to Case #CFK06-0000506 A & B (Timothy Goll and Jordan Milo) on any correspondence.  His address is:  The Honorable Mark H. Jones, 502 Whitehead St., 3rd Floor, Key West, FL  33040, FAX: 305-295-3625.

To the person who made the disgusting Catholic Church comment: I will pray for you.

A toll road would be the best way to raise the money for the waste system. Mini season, Fantasy Fest, summer vacations and the regular lobster season along with the Bike poker runs from Miami and such would by 2010 pay a huge portion of that debt alone. Don’t be tricked into voting for a tax increase that will cost you thousands more as time goes on. Tax increases don’t disappear. As for the back up in traffic at the tolls well, have you ever driven thru Miami? It’s time those folks returned some of the money we pay up there. Keep hurricane permit holders exempt and quit looking for the "easiest way" out. Raising everyone’s bills is ridiculous.$1 per car and $.50 per additional axle over 4. That way the boats being brought in will help pay for their increased damage to the highway. $1 to visit the Florida Keys is a great deal.

[Fish Carcasses] While it's true fish eat other fish and you might think fish carcasses are fine to throw in the canal--they aren't.  The brown pelican eats fish and fish carcasses can kill them.  Read why you shouldn't toss fish heads and other guts into the canal:  http://www.marathonwildbirdcenter.org/injuries.html

If you find any run down "deer burger" you just might want to check the front end of that big white pick-up truck with the Alabama plates (sub-contracting for Keys Energy). That little hard hat has been flying around Port Pine Heights and Key Deer Blvd. What's the fine now, anyway? Oh, that's right; Keys Energy will just tack a charge on our bill to cover it like everything else. Besides, only the working locals get the tickets. My bad, never mind, I forgot where I was.

I was just wondering what those who have posted here in the past regarding Bush's economic policies think of the stock market now!  There goes your tax cut and more.

The picture of the Indian electric grid wiring system made me thankful for our "pesky" code enforcers.

Looks like there isn't enough money left in the county for anything but the Pigeon Key Yacht Club

Half a billion dollars to sewer the entire Keys?  That's chump change compared to the $12 billion we are blowing in Iraq every month.  Think about that one!

Wednesday August 15, 2007

To all my friends in Big Pine and at Overseas Lumber Supply, Joey and Leah had the baby on 08/13 and I am now a grandmother. I would like to introduce to you Jaden Christopher Patterson!

Dear Mr. Neugent, As for the toll booth, how high would the toll have had to be?  I feel that $10 per car is a reasonable fee for over 100 miles of highway.  Locals could get a Fast Pass or use there evacuation sticker to exempt them from tolls. Workers coming in could get one at a reasonable rate.  Why does Dade want a cut of the pie?  Where does the money go when we ride on the Turnpike?

In all reality we could start the toll tomorrow by shutting off access while the stretch in under construction by converting all traffic to Card Sound road.  There we wouldn't have to worry about where the toll sits and how much traffic backs up.  We didn't ask the Feds to upgrade the stretch it was shoved down our throats.  In a hurricane the stretch should have been a two lane exit road and Card Sound could have been an entrance road into the Keys. For all the money put into the upgrade of the stretch we could have paid over 3 times for a new sewer system.

Doesn't this country benefit from the reef and the unique and fragile environment that would be saved by supporting us in our endeavor to install an efficient sewer system? Why is it in our history to slaughter the Buffalo, slaughter the Indian, and now slaughter the environment?  By the time the sewers come in there will have been too much damage to the reef to help save it.

Also you did not address the issue of other goverments putting taxes in place at an early time in order to help offset the cost of improvements.  Will you, in the future, consider this type of thinking in your desire to serve the people?

As far as the big three go I hope I am still here for election time.

[Sewer Lottery] Kudos to the thinking man who wrote “the county line toll booth exempting residents and environmental impact fees”.  My thoughts exactly, but I've also been thinking we should request the state to permit us to conduct a lottery for funds appropriation.  The money can be gathered without all this belly-aching and providence could smile on some individuals as well.  We wouldn't need to raise those taxes then.  It could literally be a win-win situation!

[Sealed Settlement] I dropped by the County Clerk’s office yesterday, to see what I could learn about the sealed settlement in the Duck Tours case. The settlement between Duck Tours and Ed Swift’s company, Historic Tours of America (HTA). It turned out to be a pretty interesting experience. GoodMorningKeyWest.com

The Boat Poker Run sounds like a lot of fun, but it starts too early. Why doesn’t it start at a civilized time like eleven or noon? If it started later I’d go and so would my neighbor. I’m sure there would be a lot of others who would like to enter if it was held latter in the day. i work all week and have a lot to do on Saturday mornings.

Satellite
TV is the only way to go in the hurricane prone keys. I run the dish receiver and TV on my toaster-size generator.

I think it’s cool that Commissioner Neugent and Administrator Willi take the time and care enough to have contact with their citizens through this forum.

[Canal critters] Are you people serious in Eden Pines? I have lived there for a little under a year now, and I sit on the seawall at night and feed my left over food to the crabs, tarpon, and, oh yes, nurse shark almost on a nightly basis. And we can’t forget the other small fish, snappers, grunts etc. They love it. So what do fish in the wild eat to survive—other fish! So please know what your talking about before you start your bitching about something perfectly fine. Sit on your seawall in the evening and look for longer than 3 freakin’ minutes. We have lots of sea life there and occasionally we throw our carcasses in the canal, but all you have to do is poke its eyeballs out, it sinks and the natural process of the underwater world takes place. Everything eats everything down there. Take half an hour to watch and then let us all know that you were wrong.

Put your politics aside.  This kid did a great job on this
video.

Has the Gambling boat stranded on the Saddlebunch Keys changed direction? It looks to be positioned differently since the fire. Maybe it is lighter and the recent high tides moved it.

[Dish or Direct TV]  I have had all three including Comcast, Direct TV and Dish Network.  By far, Dish Network is the absolute best!

I found this beautiful summer poem and thought it might help make your day.  It did me, and it's very well written.  Enjoy!  "Summer"  a poem by Abigail Elizabeth McIntyre: Shit, it’s hot!

[Dish or Direct TV]  I haven't tried Dish, so I can't comment on any comparisons other than the ones you can look up in their statistics.  I have had DirecTv for years and it just keeps improving and adding features.  Lots of options available, but plenty to keep you busy with just basic service.  The only weather related difficulty comes if a really deep cloud cover with dense rain moves into your direct line of sight from dish to satellite, and that rarely lasts more than a few minutes.

[Is Fishcutters really closed for good]   No they will re-open in early December.

[Dish or DirecTV] I used to have DirecTV, but switched to Dish when they had a better deal on the High Definition receiver.  I have regretted going to Dish ever since, their help line is staffed by people from India and I can’t understand a word they say.  Also, the HD receiver goes down and has to be unplugged and plugged back in to re-boot which takes about 10 minutes (this happens at least daily).  I cannot get their web site to automate my payments, so I have to enter credit card info every month, and they don’t respond to e-mails.  I can’t wait until my 18 month commitment is over, so I can go back to DirecTV, as I would never go back to cable.

I can't believe it. After I tried to wake you all up to a serious problem the only thing that stuck in a poster’s mind was that you can't make a mobile phone call from an airliner (it is possible now).

I know most of you are hung up on this sewer BS. Let me tell you, if only the half of what I see is true, the best sewer system in the world will not be able to get you out of the shit that is coming down. You think Tom Willi is a crooked, useless bum? He wouldn't make a pimple on a gnats ass compared to the things that have been done already to you all. Not as individuals, but as a people. You say, "Well it doesn't affect me." On the long run it will, when all the good men have been pushed aside. Do something! Remember, in order for evil to succeed, good men just have to do nothing.

Does any one know what happened to Paul Carbonell? I heard that he was in an accident doing 100+ miles and hour. Did he live? I’m not home right now and I’m trying to get the scoop.

[Where does nutrient rich water go?] Where do you think it goes? Read this link http://www.keywestwastewater.com/future.htm Deep injection wells may not be the best if it is not done correctly. If done incorrectly it can dump the waste into the aquifer. This is obviously not good. But what we have is also not good.

[Mangrove Pie] After I read this I am even more excited about trying it myself.
Mangrove: Any of certain shrubs and trees of the families Rhizophoraceae, Verbenaceae, Sonneratiaceae, and Arecaceae that grow in dense thickets or forests along tidal estuaries, in salt marshes, and on muddy coasts. The term also applies to the thickets and forests of such plants. Mangroves characteristically have prop roots (exposed, supporting roots). In addition, in many species respiratory, or knee, roots project above the mud and have small openings through which air enters, passing through the soft, spongy tissue to the roots beneath the mud. Mangrove fruits put out an embryonic root before they fall from the tree; the root may fix itself in the mud before the fruit separates from the parent. Likewise, branches and trunks put out adventitious roots which, once they are secure in the mud, send up new shoots. The common mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) grows to about 30 ft (9 m) tall and bears short, thick, leathery leaves on short stems, and pale-yellow flowers. Its fruit is sweet and wholesome.

[Where does nutrient rich water go?] Deep injection wells. There are many hundreds of them in Dade county and the Keys. Common sense tells me that the treated water will eventually make it to the ocean.

[DirecTV or Dish] I have Dish down here and DirecTV on the mainland. Both have DVRs. I prefer Dish because the fast forward is faster; the repeat is faster; there is an option with Dish to start over. Dish also seems to give better channel choices although it may depend on the area and they give you more information in the guide such as the year it first aired and a star rating on movies. Overall, the Dish remote is more intuitive. When I got DirecTV they started to send me a stupid magazine then started to automatically charge me monthly for it. When I got Dish I asked about putting it on vacation. They said no problem. Then when I tried to put it to sleep they told me I couldn’t do it until I fulfilled my 18 month commitment. DirecTV also said “no problem.” We’ll see. And finally, it seems that I lose the Dish signal more often in cloudy weather than DirecTV.

The day a cable or satellite company offers the customers to choose their channels instead of giving me 180 stations of garbage, I will choose that company.

[irritating commercials] I think the stupidest commercial is the one with Sally Field telling how awful it is for her to "have to set aside time every week" to take her osteoporosis pill. That’s really aggravating to have to "set aside time" to take a pill! You only have to take the pill she's selling once a month--tremendous time savings. It must save 30 seconds a month.  I saw her on TV on her show the other night. During one scene she was sitting in a kitchen doing nothing. My wife and I both said at the same time, "Take your pill now, Sally.”

Someone wrote that we can use our oceans like an aerobatic septic system? Maybe in theory, but I believe a recent study found fecal bacteria at the reef. Other methods for non-FKAA citizens: aerobatic, the anaerobic septic those select individuals may already have and I bet there are other methods. Country folk without the possibility of FKAA should not have to hook up.

[To be posted very low on the refrigerator door.]
Dear Dogs and Cats,
The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door: To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:
1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"nature.)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: In many ways, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3  Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a "gazillion" dollars for college.
And finally,
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

The one penny sales tax may be the easiest to apply, but there has to be something else to do? Do we have a tax that is collected for schools and new construction of schools? Our population is on the decline, we have several new schools. Could that tax be sunshined or retired and be funneled into the sewer funds? No new tax.

Think of the single mother that is trying to get her children ready for this school year. Books, clothing, lunch money, shoes, etc. A pair of jeans for her child would cost say for instance $25 for that one item, the cost of those jeans would be $2.15 in taxes (with the “easiest” tax increase). We need to look at this more ways than just the easiest way.

How many taxes that have been placed on us have been removed, retired or sunshined? I am a landlord, and this cost for sewers will not be passed along to my renters. I truly believe in employee housing and do my part to keep my properties affordable for our workforce people. The more money that goes into the coffers of our government the more they spend. There has to be a halt someplace, let that halt come from our commissioners. Let us look at other ways of finding a source of income for our sewer needs. Let’s all put on our thinking hats.

[sewer tax] At a time when Keys businesses are having a very hard time keeping and attracting quality employees someone came up with the great idea of a Tax Increase. Are we really that dumb to think raising the cost of living here will help in the search for employees? All it will do is mean that earnings for them will have to go up thus everything we buy will increase in cost. Sure we can save $5,000 now, but in a few years that same $5,000 will cost you more because you will have paid over that amount in the future because you raised the taxes. How short sided? A toll bridge into the Keys or guaranteed low interest loans over the period of a mortgage is the only fiscal responsible thing to do. Tax increases in an area that's already considered as high cost is a poor idea. In fact, its making you more dependent on Government and that’s never a great idea.

It's pretty sad when a major bank on Big Pine Key can no longer afford its Cable TV bill.

[Sewers] Anyone who lives in Monroe County or on this planet necessitates the need for sewering, so we all share that responsibility. The least number I have read or heard to sewer Monroe County is $200 Million and $500 Million. We are mandated by State to be done with the sewering in 2010. We will not reach or exceed the cost of the project by a toll booth tax. I do agree that we have overdeveloped and exceeded our carrying capacity for the islands that we call home.

If you really want to pay for a sewer system and make those that necessitated it pay for it. This is the only plan that makes sense. First of all, we will define those that necessitated it as the people who own businesses and developers that prostitute our limited precious resources to line their pockets with profit and the tourists they draw.

First, you put a toll booth at the county line and collect a $1.00 per person waste disposal fee (homesteaded residents and workforce families would be exempted by using an ID card or vehicle tag). Second, put a nominal per person environmental impact fee on hotels, dive operations, fishing charters and other direct tourism businesses. All the money would be pooled and set aside for sewer projects only. When revenues exceed the cost of the project, the excess funds would be used to update, repair and maintain the system for the long term. It’s the over development and excessive tourism that is partially responsible for our failing reef as well as farm runoff and other sources of pollutants.

Who are we to point the finger at others when we aren’t doing our part first?

I’m glad political activists and politicians read this column and sometimes post too. I would never contact one of them on my own. I don’t want any of them to know who I am. Monroe County citizens can be heard here without fear of being labeled a kook or pain in the arse. That’s why voting is anonymous too. Thank god for BPK.com.

[When peoples’ home insurance costs dropped did rents? No] I have rental properties and my insurance rates did not go down.

Remember when you are complaining about a $1200 a month rent that it probably cost the owner of the same apartment about $2000 a month to own the place.  You are not even paying the taxes and insurance, not to mention the mortgage payments.

I want a toll booth to pay for the sewers. I can’t afford the new sewer connection, but I can afford a dollar to come home. Don’t listen to the politicians. A true representative of the people will fight for us and not accept the BS Tallahassee spews. A toll booth will solve all our fininancial problems.

[Dish or Direct TV]  Throw out the boob tube and get a life. Out of 900 channels, less than 20 are worth viewing to me.

[Andrew Trivett's qualifications] He must be doing something right, his appointment to that position at the BOCC was prefaced by recommendations from 3 very prominent speakers (a builder/developer, a restaurateur, and a mobile home park owner.) They all worked with him recently and found him "easy to work with" and worthy of this promotion. I believe the vote was 5-0. Later at that same meeting, the same 3 speakers spoke favorably on another issue, re: the "Rezoning of Lucky’s Landing." Thanks to Mr. Trivet's "easy to work with" nature, Luckys Landing is no more. This group of 3 called "Crown Four" (?) will now proceed to build many high rise condos on the site. Lets face it, who really needs a resume or qualifications if your "easy to work with."

Why don't we abolish the TDC and use the money to pay for our sewers? I read that the TDC's budget is well over twenty million dollars a year to advertise for tourists. Obviously reducing or eliminating advertising budgets for hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. by using tax money that could be much better spent on sewers.

Hey, Big Pine Grind guy. Stop blocking me!

[When peoples’ home insurance costs dropped did rents? No] My rental properties’ rates didn’t go down at all!

Dam, that canal water in Eden Pines looks terrible lately. It’s so dark and murky I wonder how the fish stay alive in there. It looks like a septic tank.

Some really good photos. Aviation slide show

[What happens to the treated nutrient rich water that comes out of a central sewer treatment plant] It goes into a 92 ft (I believe that is the depth of Key Largo's deep injection well) for reuse.  That is what we hope will happen to our treated water. Sell it to County water trucks, fire department and people who want to reuse it to water lawns and plants.

[home repair contractors]  Keep in mind that landscapers and lawn service people are also contractors.  In this area we have a real problem with landscape bandits.  These are the people that drive around in old pickup trucks, cars, vans and whatever, with a lawnmower hanging out the back.  They, for some reason think that it is legal for them to provide lawn care without reporting their income, without paying taxes, etc. They are worst then illegal immigrants. They undercut the prices of the reputable companies (some of which are advertised on this forum). They even tell you to leave the payee blank on the check, (oh, I wonder why?)  Would you hire an electrician or plumber or carpenter who did this?

They do not carry liability insurance. Guess what happens when they hurt themselves or others or damage property?  You are liable for their damages.  Even if you can find them again you are still responsible because you hired them illegally. Use caution here and use the yellow pages and the Bigpinekey.com Business Directory to find a reputable company and save yourself a lot of grief later on.

[One cent sales tax would be the easiest to apply] So we should always go the easiest way? Don’t put the toll booth on Dade county property, put it farther south. I’m sure there’s more to it then I can imagine, but I tend to believe that’s why we elect county officials to do the hard work needed. Why not tax only specific services not everything we purchase? Add a tax to county fishing licenses, building permits. End the mini-season if the waste is not worth the trouble. Use a little imagination. The "easiest way" is something most of us tell our kids not to do. This is not intended as an insult;  it just means raising prices on everything is not the answer.

The commentator on NASA TV just identified 4 spacecraft currently docked to the ISS space station.  Two Russian Progress supply ships, 1 Russian Soyuz crew transport ship and, of course, our American space shuttle.  I guess it really is a space station.  I wonder how much valet parking costs?

[Weather resistant sewer systems] First, there is something called a generator. Second, with the technology we have and the innovation of the human race it is feasible. The question is will lazy, cheap politicians and shady contracts do a good job? If you feel what we have works there is no helping you. What do you think happens with your septic tank when there is excessive rain and storm surge?

I talked to a guy in Austin from India and he was telling me it takes months to get hooked up to the electrical system so a lot of people do it themselves, resulting in a lot of electrocution deaths in the process and a lot of fires from the home-made hodgepodge of connections.  This gives quite a visual!

What do you think happens to the treated nutrient rich water (effluent) that comes out of a central sewer treatment plant?

If you really want to pay for a sewer system and make those that necessitated it pay for it. This is the only plan that makes sense. I live in Eden Pines and had nothing but problems with Comcast.  Any time more than three drops of rain fell I would lose the signal and cable service would be down for hours.  A big storm would take it down for days.  Of course, by the time the service tech would get out, a day or two day later, everything was dry and they couldn’t find any problem.  I finally went to Dish 500 and don’t have any problems.  The video and audio signal is excellent and the only time I experience a problem is when we have a major storm cell over the island and then It’s only for a few minutes (maybe 10 or 20)  until the signal returns.  I recommend a dish system.

[you can't make a cell phone call from an airliner]  Thank heavens for small blessings!  I get to hear enough half-conversations everywhere else I go, I'd hate to be hostage next to some cell-addicted junkie chatting up everyone they know on a cross country flight.

No new taxes guy.  Go get a low interest loan yourself and buy a house. Otherwise pay your rent increase.  We’ll rent to someone else.

The White Crowned Pigeons seem to like the dead pines to hang and look around. I’m glad someone has found a positive use for them.

[When taxes go up so do rents] What, $1,200 a month for a 1 room place isn’t enough? When peoples’ home insurance costs dropped did rents? No!

I'm tired of paying Comcast almost $100 a month for digital cable & DVR, so I'm taking a survey, Dish or Direct TV to replace it?  Please give me some feedback.

We haven’t raised the rent in a couple of years, but we’re going to raise it our newly vacated house by $200; and we’re going to put the money in a separate account so when the sewer comes due we won’t be in a bad financial position. And if we can get the state to pay for their mandated sewer we’ll use the money and go to Paris.

I, Mangrovejim of Cudjoe will attempt to make a mangrove pie, so that when it makes it to the food channel and Good Morning America and Diane Sawyer asks me where I got my inspiration, I can tell her it sure wasn't no burning bush on Tarpon Belly, but the good old Coconut Telegraph. Bake on!

[If they raise taxes rents will have to be raised] Good. If they raise taxes and make it more expensive to live here then salaries will have to go up. It’s hard enough to get teachers, policemen, firemen and others to afford to live here so you think raising the cost to live here is the answer? Then store prices have to go up, less things get sold and then we will need another tax increase. See the chain reaction?

No tax increases.

Since we are looking at all of Tom Willi's shady deals and actions, has anyone looked at Drew Trivett's resume?  Does he have the qualifications required to be Growth Management Director?  Is his salary in line with the maximum allowed for that position?  Both answers are "NO".  His only ability I see is he knows how to say: "Yes Tom".

Iraq was allowed to hang Saddam Hussein after they took his power away.  Can we fire Tom Willi and then hang him?

I have to agree on the stupidity of the TV commercial these days, but the one that irritates me the most is the stupid people on the one about NetFlix movies.  I can't stand to look at it and have to put the TV on mute or I'll throw something at them!

[Mile Marker 24 Band] We are pulling out of the Keys today and are so excited to start the next leg of our summer tour. It is a beautiful day in the Keys but we are heading to the Midwest where we hear it is wonderful right now.

[Hometown Democracy Initiative] I read an article from The Pelican, a newsletter explaining how many Boards of County Commissioners (all over the country, not just the Keys) are financially tied to big developers. It was quite enlightening. I mailed away my signed petition right away. Citizens should have a voice in what happens where they live. The website is  http://www.floridahometowndemocracy.com

Well you’re in luck, The Three, of which you speak, are all up for re-election in about a year.

Before I address the question on the Toll, please allow me to speak on renters vs the homesteaded population and property owners. To the Renter, you are exactly correct, although you don’t pay property taxes directly, you do pay property taxes indirectly. However, I do know that many property owners who have rentals, especially during the rise in property values which they benefited from (and also suffer from), have tried to hold off on passing that cost on immediately to the renter.

As for the Toll, Governor Bush asked me to pursue that issue shortly after I became a county commissioner. I can say that now that he is out of office, what I found out was that although it would produce revenue, the price of the Toll had to be so high to produce enough to matter it became cost prohibitive. The folks in Key Largo were not happy at all in that they felt they would be paying more than their fair share due to so many working in Florida City and Homestead; and those from those areas working in Key Largo. There were also many other hurdles to get over such as:  where do you put the Toll booth? How much traffic does that stack up on busy holidays? Did you know that 11 of the approx. 18 miles of the stretch are in Dade County? They wanted their piece of the pie? And then the Feds wanted a chunk of the dough for road improvements and on and on and on.

So, for me, it still looks like the one penny sales tax is the easiest to apply.

And, we’ve got to do this so that we can keep the “hook-up” fees as low as possible for property owners so that they don’t pass that cost on to renters.

Would you rather eat a tree mangrove pie or a fruit mango pie?

To everyone that goes out to Picnic Island with dogs, please make sure your cute doggy doesn't take a dump in the water when everyone is swimming around. Yesterday while a group of us were sitting by our boats a turd went drifting by. That's disgusting and the next time it happens I'm going to pick it up in a bag and empty the bag in your boat!
Oh yeah, on the subject of dogs. Shut them up so we don't all have to swim around and hear them bark while everyone is trying to relax.

It’s come to the stage that every Big Pine property owner should realize what's in store for them. It's no longer a commercial redevelopment issue. It's truly the taking of Big Pine by the government. I did not want to go public, but now have no choice, after finding out the true lack of concern for our island and it's property owners by our government.

RE: Monroe County / Caya Place / Skeeters Marine Redevelopment Emails

Susan (Grimsley, county attorney),
I truly don't understand. Just so you understand exactly, Dr. Feagin has interrupted the HCP multipliers to be something that is simply not defined within reason of the true use of my properties use. To be very clear, the entire HPC is only an overview. All I'm asking is for someone, anyone to review my properties existing use of the 20 plus years and consider just why we couldn't ask for a vote from all commissions DRC, PC, BOCC. Then we could take that vote to Fish and Wildlife as an approval for their review as the HCP states, and possible approval. As you know, or maybe not, my property has been cleared and fenced for a very long time.

If anything that was written in the Big Pine Master Plan is to become reality, just where is a better place to allow development than on US1 and completely fenced land?

Simply saying no to what I propose is not the answer as my entire life has been spent paying for the future. I have stated many times before, people who are not vested in Big Pine have no business controlling our future from afar. We, as property owners must have a say in our future. If government doesn’t understand the words "for the people" we are all lost.

Talk is cheap, action comes with people who want a real future for all, not just a select few.

Again, all I ask is to take it to a vote. If that can't be done, just rip up the Big Pine Master Plan and await the complete extinction of the working class and small business in the lower keys.

You stated, by violating the ITP, the county could have adverse consequences. Well it seems to me we are way past that point with the loss of the wonderful working people we have already forced to leave because of no quality of life and none possible in their future.

Let's do something about it now. --Richard Beal, SkeeterS marine / Caya Place

I want to remind everyone that this Saturday the 18th is the 1st Annual Boat Poker Run sponsored by the Big Pine and Lower Keys Rotary Club.  Come out an join the fun.  Registration begins at 9:00 at Dolphin Marina and the other stops are Bahia Honda, Old Wooden Bridge Fish Camp, Looe Key Tiki Bar (they will be opening at 10:00 that day) and the finale will be at Parrotdise Waterfront.  You can purchase up to 5 hands and they are $30 for the 1st hand and $25 for additional hands.

Don't have a boat?  That's ok.  Just come to Parrotdise between 2 and 3 to buy a hand.  Hands must be turned in by 3:00.  Hope to see everyone there. Bulletin Board

Bum Farto is not going to be taking anybody fishing any time to soon. Just how long have you been gone, Bimini Ray?

Here comes a bit of a blow
!  I sure hope it takes out a few of these ugly cookie-cutter projects spreading like a cheap hooker’s legs. Come on down Dean. Lower property values only help us poor working folks.

I totally agree that it is shameful that the County Administrator, Tom Willi of Monroe County, would do what he did. Are you emailing, calling or doing anything to get your point across to Tom Willi's bosses?  They are the 5 members of Monroe County BOCC. Call them and tell them of his behavior and your concern that something like this does not happen again?   Make sure you have a very good informed vote and get the word out to other voters here in Monroe County.  It is your privilege and duty to vote. That is what makes us different from other countries, so please make sure you cast your vote. Get informed the best way you can.

Weather resistant sewer systems you say. Up in Grand Rapids, MI, every time it rains any appreciable amount, their public system overflows raw sewage into the Grand River, only to be enjoyed for the next week by everyone living down stream. There is, of course, a fine that must be paid, but it is so low that the city government gladly writes the check instead of improving the system. A power outage and 12 inches of rain will likely have the same effect here.

[Get another Waste Management System]  Ha, there is no other choice!

Place a bucket of clean, fresh water in your yard, then wait a week or two. It will be green and have all manner of bacteria swimming around. Turn off the filter in your pool and see what happens. It will help to get the water out into the open ocean as soon as possible where wave action will introduce oxygen to the mix and promote the natural process of decay.

The water at Silver Springs comes from an underground aquifer? Do you think? It's the origin of the water that is held in that aquifer that is in question. I'll bet you think the water in your tap has been there all along too.

Key West did not hire Tom Willi. Unincorporated Monroe County hired him. Murray Nelson was behind bringing Tom Willi down.

[Where did Mr. Mayor make that money] Mario DiGennaro has these businesses; all of them are in his wife's name. They are Global Health Connection; New Aquarius Trailer Park (located in Aquarius Mobile Home Park, 451 SE 8th Street, Homestead) American Ortho-Med, and Ortho-Med Europe.

[Hurricane Dave] He is back in Big Pine after a long recovery from his burns in the propane explosion. Go Dave!

Is Fishcutters really closed for good?  I heard they are not reopening? Does anyone know?

(Ed: The electricity is out this morning and we're publishing today with our new generator. Wowiee.)

[They don't have a clue where the water comes from]  I believe the water associated with most Florida springs come from a fresh water aquifer that lies under Florida. How can anyone accept any of your ideas if you are willing to post false information? Porous limestone and leach fields don’t mix. What would creating a hole at the end of the canal do? Allow the dirty water to reach the open water faster? The lush plant life associated with septic tanks and leach fields is one reason why people that live close to water should not have septic tanks. When the sewage that causes the grass to grow so well gets into the water it also increases the growth of algae and other aquatic plants we don’t want. The sooner we get a descent weather resistant sewer system the better. Homes without the possibility of FKAA water should be allowed to use some other waste management system. I don’t know what kind I have never researched them.

If you think renters do not pay property tax you are blind. When property tax goes up so does rent.

[Catholic churches stand is on Viagra] I’m sure they’re for it--anything that makes more little Catholics.

[Don't like a restaurant? Go somewhere else] Yes, we can do that, but isn’t it better if the restaurants would change the things that the public doesn’t like before they go out of business? Some restaurant owners actually listen to their customers and some don’t. The ones that listen usually succeed.

The grass between the taxi ways caught fire from the lightening and the fire dept had to put it out.  There were a few flight delays in progress.

Is it just me or does it seem that commercials on television are falling all over themselves for the stupidity award?

[took over half of my lane]  Part two of your proposed reaction sounds more productive and less likely to result in undesirable consequences.

I’ve never been to an area that has such a high transient rate as here. Some people leave and you miss them, others leave and its, “Ho-hum, they wont find it there either.”

Rue Paul, Ron Paul, our real presidential candidate is Bob Paul!

[Eden Pines canals] I don't know about Sharks, but I definitely saw a few gators in there a few years back.

Well it just goes to show you what hypocrites churches and the people that go to them are.  I am talking about the church that refused to host a memorial for a gay vet.  Why do people go to church?  So they can go out into the world and preach to everyone how much better they are then everyone else and how they are going to heaven and the rest of us heathens are doomed to an eternity in hell.  Before I got married which was 30 years ago I went to the Catholic church because I wanted to be married in one and the priest refused to marry my husband unless we went through 6 months of classes.  Well, we ended up going to a Lutheran church and 30 years later my husband and I are still together and will stay together till death do us part.  The most outrageous thing about the Catholic priest who turned us down chained smoked Bel-Air cigarettes blowing second hand smoke in our faces the whole time he was telling us we were not up to the Catholic church’s standards.

Tom Willi?  Are you nuts?  All that crap was going on in Davie when Key West hired him and you're just now finding out about it? You deserve him!

As an ex-resident of Summerland Key (rumor is T.W. lives on Summerland) and Davie, I was shocked as I read the daily papers and watched that loser ruin one paradise after another. It makes me question, does anybody down there read anything other than the mullet wrappers they give away in the bars?  Quit bitching about re-fills and read about the retards in office in this state.  I still read the papers online from where I used to live and just when I think I made a mistake in moving, I realize it was the best thing I ever did.
