Vic Anderson of the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers retired earlier this year. Like him or
not, it was Vic and people like him that kept the Keys from looking
like Miami. Perhaps Vic did spend an inordinate amount of time on
details that may seem trivial to some, but it's the incremental
degradation that eventually adds up to an environmental mess. Vic
tried his very best to hold the line on the destruction of the Keys,
at great personal cost. Vic is a man of principle and integrity, and
we were fortunate to have him as our environmental watchdog for so
many years.
As for the plugged canals on Big Pine, Ramrod and Little Torch...well
those canals were plugged because they were dredged illegally back in
the heyday of rampant environmental destruction and ruination of the
Keys. The plugging of those canals was the penalty for the illegally
dredging them. If there was any real environmental justice, the canals
would have been backfilled and the land restored.
Seriously, folks. Haven't the Keys seen enough thrashing and
development? How much more development do we as a community really
need? Lots of folks complain about government regulation, but they
sure like that vacant lot next to their house. Next time your walking
the dog and enjoying the peace and beauty of Big Pine, realize there
are plenty of folks that had to forfeit their dream of building so you
can enjoy your walk.
Think what the Keys would look like if every lot was developed. How
long would the lines in Winn Dixie be? Traffic anyone? Any fish left
in the sea? Would you still want to live here? Think it through. |

murderer. Yes, they do die on their own;
and yes you are allowed to trim a certain amount. The ones I
"gradually" removed were no bigger than a potted plant of average
size, altogether. Threats are so much fun. Thanks for keeping an

Re the ammo dump . Your
statements are fat and utter lies. KSTP St Paul Minn. Channel 5
news crew was with U.S. soldiers in Iraq as they discovered large
amounts of unguarded explosives just after the fall of Baghdad. This
has become a sensitive issue, since tons of explosives are reported
missing from that area and are possibly now in the hands of the enemy.
The news crew was with soldiers from the
101st Airborne division on April 18, 2003 when they checked out the
bunkers at or near Al-Qaqaa. Inside those bunkers, they found a
variety of explosives. The films of their visit are all over the
media (including CNN last night).
So, it wasn't gone before the US
arrived as Bush claims. Bush failed to secure the explosives and now
it is in the hands of terrorists.
The world is far more unsafe now. Thanks to Bush and his
colleagues. VOTE KERRY. |

Radagest beer or two (or three) at the Bohemia restaurant on
Flagler in K.W. With a name like that I thought it would be German,
but it was Czechoslovakian. What good beer and what old lousy food. I
think the food was left over from Tito’s era. |

her visor, body parts, you should be ashamed. Maybe the
"visor" keeps hair out of the food, maybe she feels
comfortable in it during her 15
hour day. Obviously, you must be perfect to pass judgment on
someone as dear and sweet as Sam, or maybe you are like the rest of
the mean-spirited people who are just plain jealous that you don't
look like her. I for one enjoy this web site but I was embarrassed to
read those entries. As far as the silicone, do you live with her, some
people are just born lucky. It takes hard work, excise and good eating
habits to look like that, So while your eating your twinkles and
thinking of who you can hurt next, why don't you take a jog or bike
ride and work on yourself. |

themselves to death. You work hard take care of yourself and are an
asset to this community and choose to where a visor while you are
doing it. Believe this the community of Big Pine Key is happy with

has the best damn baby back ribs you'll ever eat, I
never really noticed the lady's visor. There

pizza is not only nasty pizza but the cook is very
unsanitary. Picking his nose and then preparing food. They never use
gloves to prepare the food nor do they wash their hands. I'm not sure
the cook even washes his body. |

I have lived in BPK
only 4 years and I, too,
am against any fast food places coming to town. Once the first is
here then the rest will follow. I also think when the new
Paradise Mobil is built and the old one torn
down another piece of BPK will be gone forever. Take your pictures
now so the next generation can see what BPK used to look like.

I can't wait for Wendy's
to come to Big Pine. It's about time we get a fast food restaurant on
Big Pine. It is impossible to take a lunch break and get a good meal
cooked quickly leaving time to actually enjoy your food before you
have to go back to work. Why is it when you call ahead to pick up food
that they don't start cooking
it till you get there? That defeats the purpose of calling ahead.
Coco's is the worst about that. And they are so rude when you go in
and expect your food to be ready. |

I wish I could go through the Winn
Dixie checkout without the cashier complaining to me. I
personally hate grocery shopping to begin with and after spending
time searching every isle because they moved EVERYTHING in the store
and dodging rude people that walk right in
front of me like I'm not even there;
then I have to hear the cashiers complaining about managers, broken
registers, not getting breaks and whatever else is on their minds.
Keep it to yourselves. I don't
want to hear it. I have my own problems.
Just ring up my stuff and let me go. Oh,
and the self-check-outs
suck just like at K-Mart. Winn Dixie should have done their homework
on that one.

Ed,
you haven't lived here long enough to give out island history,
you got some things right,
but Les used the
insulators to make stuff with. There
is still a pile of them in the woods near there. He
also used old broken black glass bottles and any other glass he
could find laying around. You
see, as a little kid, Les
used to let me sit and watch them work all the time. I
have a collection of things he gave me when they were still cooling
off. God blesses us with the
little things in life to remember.

is Mia and she isn't related to John and Dawn. She's married
to Robert. He's the guy you see cooking all the delectable treats we
go to Fishcutters for. They are a wonderful couple and you are right,
Mia does brighten up the whole place. |

I agree, let's
get rid of Theresa Axford.
She cares only about how she appears and not about what is best
for our children. The problem is that she feels like she owns the
school and anybody who opposes her gets the shaft. Either job wise or
the kids get it. Have any of you seen what she has done with the SAC
meetings? The people who want to run who would make a positive change
aren't even let on the ballots.
This isn't a fair or just system at all. Maybe she ought to move out
of the keys and take her "artist" husband with her. What kind of art
does he do anyway? Has anybody
ever seen him "do" anything? There are many parents who would like to
see the kids learn more that just how to take an FCAT test. How about
teaching our kids how to live and function productively in the real
world? That wouldn't get FCAT
money though. |

Re: Big Pine Glassworks. The owner was Les
Cunningham, a local legend at the time. He died in a head-on crash
with original refuge manager Jack Watson, Sr., back in the early
70's. They were looking for key deer poachers. Both
vehicles were running with
lights out at night on Key Deer Blvd. when the crash occurred.
Watson survived. Cunningham operated the glass foundry in the back
of the (Montego Bay) property with a small shop up front. I don't
know about the glass insulators, but I know he made a lot of
knick-knack stuff, paperweights, etc.

I remember the Big Pine
Glassworks only vaguely, as I was a little kid. I do have a
beautiful blown glass swan made by the guy that worked there. I
believe we had two in our family, it was news to me that it was a
practical job as well as an artistic pursuit. Does anyone else have
any pieces from there? I don't know if the guy had a side business or
was friends with my parents. |

Please do not ever let Corporate
America into Big Pine. That means no fast food chains, or
Wal-Marts. Winn Dixie and CVS is more then enough. You could
consider a little more space for small businesses, a county Group
Insurance policy so small business owners can afford health insurance
for their staff and a little bit more affordable housing. I recently
had to move from Big Pine because I discovered this great place a
little to late to afford a home and I never was able to afford the
cost of health insurance even if I was lucky to find a job that did
offer it. There are very few employers in the keys that can afford a
good benefit package for their people. The County is about it. Even
though my standard of living went down when I arrived in Big Pine
three years ago I was still so much happier there then any place I had
ever lived before. It was the people, my neighbors that made
the difference. I miss being a part of the Big Pine community. But I
will visit often and spend my vacation money at all the local places. |

be watched when the US moved in. An imbedded reporter for NBC was
with the soldiers when they arrived at the spot and reported it had
been emptied sometime before the US arrived there.
This story was first reported in April

cause a pre-election uproar.

duck, they are death on the buggers! But you will

If you have those
grasshoppers you want to kill them all. They
will not only kill your plants they will also kill your grass. I had
them about 10 yrs. ago after I
had planted all new sod. They were very pretty as babies black
& orange. They ate all my new sprouts plus a lot of plants. You can
hear them chewing away on the leaves of your plants! If you don't
like squishing them you can wasp spray on them.

When will they start?
I went to a meeting almost 2 years ago and everyone agreed to use
the Sugarloaf School field
as an alternative soccer field, that was 2 soccer seasons ago and
still nothing. I remember
Steve Miller working on this before I had children, my youngest is
now almost 11 years old. When will we get our park?
We need it, go check out Watson Field and how everyone is
using a corner of it to support all our youth activities;
and those who can't fit are over at St. Peter's practicing.
I think it's about time we all get together and find out what
the hold up is.

vote for R. Acevedo. If you vote for Mr. Padget, you
are voting against our teachers. He refuses to pay the teachers a
living wage, even though everyone voted to allow more money to go to
teachers salaries. I realize that he is not a conch and he is
"shaking" things up, but that does not mean it is necessarily good. He
is big business, look at all the people who gave to his campaign. Ed
Swift has given him tons of $$$, why do you think that is? You do not

Review: Mangrove Mamas.
Your simple job is to smile & say, “Hello & Goodbye” and seat
the customers according to their wishes. We ate dinner there early
Tuesday evening after walking in & saying hello to you, your only
reply was, “Two? Inside or Out?” After that
you threw the menus on the unleveled table & waddled away. We
requested a bigger table and your response was that it could be too
busy (not), but you
hesitantly obliged the customers. We would have ordered another
round of drinks and desserts, but the restaurant was freezing-cold
to keep the staff comfortable. Other diners were obviously chilly;
bundled-up and bolting out the front door. My glands are swollen!
The final blow was leaving & not hearing goodbye. They are more
hospitable in Blockbuster video than your mistreatment. I am going
to guess your family owns the joint from your dirty jeans and a very
bad attitude. The wait staff and the food are way too good for such
a bad first impression. The restaurant would be better served with
you in the back, washing dishes.

I just wanted to say how OUTSTANDING I
think our local community is for supporting little Brett
Cantler’s cause by showing up at the car wash on Saturday at
M&M auto. Everyone from the children who helped wash cars and sell
baked goods to the adults who handled the auction, the raffle and
washing all those cars. And,
boy, there were a lot of them.
These people washed 4 cars at a time, constantly moving them in and
out. It was really amazing.
Also, I think it’s wonderful
that so many area businesses donated goods and services to be
auctioned or raffled off. Julie Allen, your cookies were absolutely
beautiful and, boy,
was that biscotti with chocolate good.
I can’t believe you baked so much stuff for this bake sale.
You made it great. I was,
also, so amazed by the
numerous people who just stopped by and gave donations without even
getting there car washed.
Marine Bank did a great job with the food they sold. Everything was
really yummy and all proceeds went to help the Cantlers. This car
wash truly showed yet again how Big Piners take care of their
neighbors. I heard one man
say to another “ Big Piners always take care of their neighbors…they
donate and ask what is was for…later.”
How true. What a great place
to live. |

sick of election rhetoric I could vomit. Thank God
we live in a place that is unspoiled by the hustle and bustle of
mainland life. I don't know
which candidate will do more damage. It
gives one a lot of

Florida keys sunset and say a prayer for Jack Henry and Jerry

Restaurant Review: We've been ordering
delivery from China Garden for over seven years. They
arrive fast, and the food has always been excellent; the quality
hasn't changed throughout this time, although we miss the California
rolls that they offered years ago. The steamed dumplings and shredded
pork with garlic sauce are particularly delicious. Good Chinese
restaurants are rare, and we are fortunate to have them here on Big
Pine. |

forget to vote on Nov. 2. Still undecided? Consider: Kerry voted
for tax increases over 90 times. He has never supported a tax
decrease. He consistently votes against any military spending to
support our armed forces and voted against funding intelligence
gathering for homeland security just after 9-11. He claims to support
the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms but is a co-sponsor of
the most restrictive gun control bill ever introduced. (He accepted a
campaign gift of a shot gun and praised it’s quality yet it would be
illegal under his bill, if passed. His so called ‘hunting trip’ has
been shown to be a sham to pander the sportsman vote.) When
addressing autoworkers he bragged about his SUV’s but less than two
weeks later he denied owning an SUV while talking to an environmental
group. His distortions and lies go on forever and he will say
anything that his audience of the day wants to hear. He claims to
support the working middle class men and women yet, voting for more
than 90 tax increases doesn’t sound like support to me. He supports a
50 cent PER GALLON TAX INCREASE on gasoline. I guess he will be
supporting working people while they’re walking to work. Please vote
on Nov. 2nd. But, do so armed with the facts. Investigate
Kerry’s Senate voting record over his 20 years in office and look at
the legislation he has voted against and voted for. (Consistently
more big government, more taxes and less individual rights) You may
not like Bush for a variety of reasons but Kerry is a
frightening thought. |

I think they need to bring back the
hair nets. I was having a late lunch at the Big Pine Coffee
Shop and the girl with the red hair brought it out to me
with two hairs in the plate. That's
it for me: the she owner was so busy talking,

to Engineers for Dock Drawings. I recommend hiring
Sandra Walters Consultants, Inc. in Key West for the permitting and
Perez Engineering in Key West for the Dock Drawing. Big Piners work
at both of these companies, and I got my dock permitted through the
Army Corps when I hired Sandra Walters Consultants.

Who's butt did I kiss to be able to build a seawall? Well, let's
see. We started many years before by very gradually removing the
mangroves that were growing on the bank of the canal. Then we
applied for the permit. This was very expensive. Then we paid for
a biological survey. Then we paid for another elevation survey.
Then we waited and waited. Finally we had someone from the county
come by then we paid another firm to send all the letters required
to all the federal and state and local agencies and waited some
more. After about 18 months total we were granted the permit and
work commenced. At each step in the building process there were
more inspections until it
was finally finished and inspected for the last time. A lot of work,
but the day it was completed our property value increased by another
$50.000.00. There was no butt kissing. We just followed
the rules.

good reason that nobody has commented on the other Gulfside
restaurant on Summerland. I
ate there a few days ago and spent $10 for a fish sandwich
and a soda - and for my money I'd much rather eat at FishCutters
where I always leave stuffed for under $10. If you try one of those
hoagie fish sandwiches, you'll know what I mean.

Key deer are not
indigenous to the Keys. They are white tailed deer brought from
upstate New York by Flagler for sport. Key deer are not inherently
diminutive. They were taken out of their natural habitat where they
thrived, and placed in a fragile environment incapable of supporting
their dietary and territorial needs. They are not an endangered
species as they are not a species in itself, but the result of
environmental conditioning. Like the albino deer at Argon Labs in
Illinois, they have been compromised by negative environmental
conditioning and over time, resulted in a degradation of the
species. You are being fooled by an illusion created for no other
reason than to justify government involvement, grants and funding
for redundant layers of bureaucracy and unnecessary jobs. Just try
building a dock, deck or porch in a refuge for bogus deer.

rules. Now here's a typical bit of advice coming from a
"got-miner". Get off your high horse and tell us who's butt did you
kiss? You don't even know the rules. A limited number of permits are
issued per quarter for new construction on Big Pine, so houses are
allowed if you're willing to put up with the ROGO and cesspit credit
game. And what a game it is; favoring the rich who have way too much
time and money on their hands. But those who bought their lots years
ago never realized they may never be able to build their dream
home--because the rules have changed. As a property owner you have
certain unalienable rights. Legislature that impedes these rights or
favors certain socio-economic groups should be questioned and
rigorously scrutinized. Fences also are allowed as long as they
conform to the opacity, height and setback requirements. But as I've
already said, perfectly conforming docks that follow the rules--are
still being prohibited by good 'ol boy Vic. Ah, but the plugged canal
issue has nothing to do with too many houses or key deer. It so
perfectly illustrates the strong arm tactics of the Army Corps of
Engineers and one Vic Anderson's hidden agendas. Do your research
before you spout off that sanctimonious crap. I bet you break rules.

Engineers: I agree with you about just ignoring them. If we
all ignore them, hopefully they'll go away. But for all practical
purposes, maybe there's a better way to remove the thorn in our
side. Vic Anderson is the problem and he'll fight for dear life to
keep his cushy job. He'll find reasons so obscure and absurd that they
defy logic and all rational thought. Why can't you build, why canals
can't be opened? It's an embarrassment to our community and an insult
to our intelligence. Someone ought to write a story, and publish it
nationally, about the abject stupidity, hypocrisy, bias and political
melee connected with the building and permitting process here in the
Keys. It's laughable, but unfortunately for us, it isn't funny. Or

Regarding the Army Corps.
If one would follow the rules these guys are reasonable. You can't
build houses because there are too many already. Fences on Big Pine
are a no-no because of the Key Deer. You should have known about them
before buying in a refuge. As for the dock, if you follow the rules
and spend the money and take over a year for the permitting process
maybe you'll get the permit. We built a wonderful seawall legally not
too long ago. Follow the rules. |

friends, the food was great, the service was great, the waitress was a
sight for sore eyes, the atmosphere was great. I went in having a bad
day and came out happy. I also had a chance to speak with the owner,

what a fantastic place! Delicious food with great specials. They
don’t whisk any plates away when only one of you has finished eating
(height of rudeness) and let you digest each course a bit before
bringing out the next wonderful plateful. Oh, did I mention the value
for money? Very impressive. My husband and I were sick to death of
the same old boring menus everywhere with their “if it’s not fried it
ain’t died” approach. Galley Grill’s food is generous in portion,
tasty and the staff are so welcoming and professional. Did I mention
the value for money bit? Oh yes, so I did…. |

Yes, you do all need a government health
plan. I have lived in many places around the world. I have
yet to come across another developed country like the USA with such a
3rd world healthcare system. If Americans think it will
mean no choice for them, it is complete nonsense. Even if there’s a
government health plan you can still opt out and get your own private
health insurance if you choose. The private health plans just open
the doors to privately funded medical institutions e.g. the BUPA
hospitals in the UK. They are by no means better equipped than the
government hospitals – probably the only thing better about them is
their food and they have carpet in the corridors to the private
rooms! In France you can get 2 pairs of eye glasses, all your dentist
visits and doctor visits free each year. Fair enough your taxes are
approximately 45% but it worked out to be a pittance compared to what
your American medical bills could reach if you dare to become ill.
Let’s face it, in the USA, unless you are a veteran of a war, have a
house to re-mortgage or have recently arrived over the border by land
or sea with no identification papers, you’re buggered! By the way, I
heard there’s a Medivan which comes to St. Peter’s
Church every week – can anyone give me the day and time just in case I
ever get sick because I can’t afford health insurance in the “land of
the free”? |

built a nation on integrity. We must take it back. It will take

a serious and aggressive interest in debunking that brown-nosing chump
Vic Anderson. His decisions have nothing to do with
environmental concerns. His only agenda is personal gain and
justification for his own job. Hey, if he didn't keep you from
building docks and fences, opening perfectly healthy and beautiful
plugged canals--that he ordered to be plugged with tons of
construction debris and concrete--he would be redundant. Dumping
concrete and rebar into pristine wetlands is illegal and damaging to
the environment but it's perfectly legal for Vic Anderson--not for
you. Even if your conforming dock was approved by all the other
departments, you can be sure Vic will put a cabosh on it. I'm ready to
go to the Miami Herald. I'm ready to go to Fish and Wildlife. Are
there any attorneys out there who can help? Consider this. The canals
already exist. Rip rap and docks already exist. Why are you being
prevented from building and using something that others already have?
How is adding another dock to an already disturbed canal shoreline
cluttered with existing docks going to further degrade the shoreline?
If you have any ideas, let's put our brains together. |

the person who has had a problem with the Army Corp of
Engineers. You
are not the only one. Vic Anderson is a dictator running a private
kingdom in a so-called free country. He has way too much power,
i.e., he is the only one standing opposed to the opening of the
plugged canals in Big Pine. His reason? He had a personality
conflict with the developer who originally dug the canals and said
they would be open, over his
dead body. This is not the
kind of impartial direction we deserve from our government
officials. Unfortunately Vic Anderson is not voted in or out of his
position. He is a dictator for life.
But, as you, and many others have seen, he abuses his power and has
private agendas. You weren't clear what your issue is with the Army
Corp of Engineers but there are several major issues that have been
in and out of court, but Vic's power always wins. We need to find a
way to go over Vic's head and, better yet, get him removed and
replaced with someone who really cares about the people he is
supposed to serve. Give us more details on your issue, and if
anyone else is interested in standing up to this guy, please post.
Especially if you're a lawyer looking for a challenge.

Food Market and Winn Dixie. I ordered a Pastrami and Swiss
the other day and almost threw up after one bite. Later on that day I
was hungry since I couldn't eat my lunch so I stopped by Winn Dixie to
pick up something for dinner and got ripped off again on their 99 cent
bread special. They charged me the regular price. I was so tired
from working all day on an empty stomach that I didn't have the
strength to wait in line to get my money back. |

than medical cash-cows. The flu virus has so many different strains
that one vaccine couldn't possible cover all the types we come into

personally carry a small bottle of alcohol with me when out in public

Restaurant Review:
Fishcutters. Very good. We had the crab chowder which was thick,
full of stuff and full of flavor. As I write this I’m thinking, I
should have had three bowls of the chowder and come back again to try
the other things, it was so good.
The grilled snapper was cooked perfectly and had a cilantro mango
sauce over it. The grouper Po’boy sandwich was delicious and had a lot
of stuff on it. The filet was in a shallow bath of butter or some
other delicious oil and so was the fish on the Po’boy sandwich. It
might taste good, but it still will make me fatter and clog my
arteries. Most people order grilled instead of fried to cut down on
oil. I like my fish plain because I don’t eat fresh fish enough to
want to enhance it with anything. The coleslaw was good, but I’m not
too sure about the mangoes in it.
It was like going to a fancy
restaurant for fancy food right here in a simple Ramrod Key fish
house. The cooks really have their stuff together. They really know
fancy food and how important quality ingredients are. This is no
amateur operation.
And, oh, yes, they have free
draft beer! |

for 30 years. I had seen him rather recently. There is no way Rob
O.D.'d
on anything. You are a cruel one to say so. Rob was a diabetic and cardiac
complications are common with diabetes.
Rob hadn't really felt great for the last several years. He did not
do drugs. That's the truth.

RE: FLU SHOT SHORTAGE:
I find it appalling and unbelievable that there has been no mention
of the shortage of flu vaccine on the BPK site! This is an issue
that affects everyone and yet, it is apparently more important to
sound off about the Winn Dixie parking lot, iguanas eating your
plants, or which restaurant has better food.
I am really getting so tired of the petty complaints coming out of
peoples mouths. Thank
goodness there are still some individuals who attempt to raise the
social consciousness of the BPK readers.
When the flu begins to hit the Keys, you can count on that
happening, and our hospitals begin to fill up with the elderly who
can't fight off the infection and individuals begin to die, I,
for one don't want to hear any complaints.
This shortage is a situation that NEVER should have occurred in this
wonderful country of ours.
Hopefully, the next time I check in to this site, I will read some
feedback on this problem.

About health insurance.
I live on Big Pine and commute to Key West to work in a government job
in order to have health insurance. Believe me I don't do it for the
money. Insurance was out of our reach otherwise. Being self employed
my husband could not afford to have insurance and with a recent
surgery ($50,000) I'd work for free just to have the insurance. What
a shame all Americans aren't covered because it does make a difference
in the quality and availability of care. Contrary to what most people
think hospitals and doctors are not required to treat you anyway. |

My friend seriously injured his eye and went to
the VA who didn't have a specialist on duty so they sent him to a
Miami hospital, with an excellent specialist, who fixed him. He told
them he didn't have insurance and they said they had to treat
him anyway. |

Robert C. French, 58, died unexpectedly Oct. 10, 2004. A
longtime Key West and Florida Keys resident, he was a 1964
graduate of Stranhan High School in Fort Lauderdale, and was a
graduate of the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he
earned his Master of Business Administration degree. During his
residence in the Keys, he earned his private pilot's license,
Florida real estate broker's license and Florida certified general
property appraiser's license. He owned numerous businesses on Big
Pine Key and in Key West from the mid-1970s until his untimely
death. He was preceded in death by his parents, Parke and Elinor
French. He is survived by his brother, Fred French, of Cape Coral;
his sister, Lavina Smith (Doug), of Albany, Ohio; his uncle and
aunt, Tom and Carol Mears, of Boca Raton; and his cousins,
Jennifer Mears and Julie, Tucker and Tyler Morgan, also of Boca
Raton. He also leaves numerous extended family members and great
friends. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday,
Oct. 23, 2004, at Big Pine Memorial Gardens of the Keys. In lieu
of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robert's
memory to The American Heart Association at 9900 9th Street North,

migraines. I have sympathy for them. I also went thru that.
Man, that is as close to Him as I ever want to get. I went thru the,
"here take this, take that, give yourself a shot", and bal blah blah.
I finally had a good day and I went to the doctor and told them I
didn't need any more drugs to throw up. They talked to a neurologist
and he put me on Elavil/Nortryptaline daily and I haven't had a
migraine since and that has been several years now. Thank God. At
first, about (three weeks) you are kind of out of it, but that passes
and then you won't feel the Elavil any more, but it will be working. I
wish you the best and I would mention
this to your doctor. My regular doctor did not know about this
treatment but the neurologist did.. So try a neurologist if your
doctor doesn't have a clue. By the by, they cost about $20.00 a month.
I would have paid five times that not to have a migraine. Good luck

I find that inhaling peppermint essential oil and/or lavendar
essential oil (make sure they're essential oils, not fragrance oils)
works well. Inhale slowly and deeply. You can use either oil by
itself or mix the two, but be really careful not to get either of

Saw a TV news thing on
migraines; they've discovered a spot behind the
back teeth on the upper jaw that swells and can be reduced with cold
to relieves the pain. The picture
showed a wishbone shaped gadget that fits in the mouth
and refrigerates the areas while
in the dentist chair. Not sure what the home equivalent would
be, maybe juggling chips of ice in the way back of your mouth? At
least it's drug-free; just don't choke!

You probably don't check your receipt when you go to Winn Dixie
otherwise you would be as pissed off about this problem as well. Winn
Dixie has a major problem with charging the regular price on

there. Why don't they improve on that? No other super markets do

have been a nightmare
lately. They are trying to move forward. I can understand the business
point of view, but I am also
taking care of an elderly women. She
is taking chemo pills and her
daughter wants to pay for it with her credit
card. The store cannot do this because she lives out of state.
Eckerd's did not have a problem with this,
but CVS does. I do not call that progress. |

to the Winn Dixie employee, if you were commenting
on the last Winn Dixie comment before yours in which I think you
were. I am not an employee of the store. I am just someone who has
sat and watched them over the years slowly but surely trying to
improve themselves for the better. And this time I think they have
done their best. It is not a rip off store, if you go to Publix or
Albertsons you will see that a lot of their products are either just
as expensive or more so. Publix and Albertsons have the same little
store member cards just like Winn Dixie and if you didn't have them
then you don't get the sale price. And I stand with my comment about
the complainers. I have lived in this town a long time and believe me
their are more good comments going on then complaints. Most people
have the common courtesy to know when people are trying to make things
better not to try to cut them down. |

away", then the security software sitting on the editor's mail server
would do you no good. If someone wanted to capture the contents of

editor's server. However, if you think you are above accountability
and impervious to consequences, then you're naive. I've already said
that the "incident" is public record. What constitutes libel or
slander is the malicious intent to defame and injure an individual's
reputation (as in business) or otherwise expose him to public
contempt. Libel is in the form of written or printed words,
specifically a false published statement. Ah, but you say it isn't
false. But it is if you're suggesting guilt, intent or making unproven
accusations. Yes, you can be sued if the statement was made with

Oleander is a very toxic
plant, if ingested by deer or children. About 15 years ago the
necropsy of a motherless fawn showed that the cause of death was
oleander poisoning. Deer, bears, and probably other animals learn
what's good to eat from the smell of the plants on the mother's
breath. It was surmised that without its mother it made a fatal
mistake. That being said,I doubt that oleander poisoning of deer
occurs very frequently, but would check with Fish & Wildlife to see
if it's a problem. I would suggest going with native plants, but you
probably are looking for something colorful, and our natives are
mostly just green.

So here's the
question that apparently goes unasked of all the Democrats who are
sure it is President Bush who lacks intelligence: What would Zarqawi
be doing now if he were not slaughtering people in Iraq? Selling used
cars in Amman? Playing cello in the Berlin Philharmonic? The
president has said from the beginning that a major reason for invading
Iraq was to bring the war to the terrorists, and that if we don't
fight them on their soil we will have to fight them
on ours. Therefore, unless one posits that Zarqawi and other Arab
sadists would be doing nice things elsewhere, their presence in Iraq
seems to vindicate the president entirely -- that they would be busy
in the West if they were not kept busy defending their very lives in
Iraq.

The drug users are the good guys

transaction. If you’re from out-of-town and

use a VERY reputable,

will also want to bring along an attorney
(man) to your closing. Half of the Big Piner broads are over-weight,
starving realtors who pass vicious and untrue gossip. When they get
their prey (you) they rip you to shreds because it’s only about
extracting money from their one deal of the year. If you don't
believe me, try to find available real estate attorneys. They
are all really busy pursuing the unethical "business" people. Buyer

There are lots of worthy people in Big Pine that qualify but Steve's
the one. He loves Big Pine
with all his heart. He devotes his life to not only his children but
all our children, works hard at a great local business for Susan and
Dan, (also wonderful people), and gives all his spare time to making
Big Pine the great place it is. Small town politics is tough
business but we all know Steve can handle it.

decided to put in my 2 cents. I'm 14 and have lived on Big Pine my
whole life and have felt the full impact how there is NOTHING ON BIG
PINE for the teens to do. I mean the county spends more money on the
key deer then making a teen center on Big Pine for
the 100+ teens who live on the island. I think the county should stop
worrying about the deer and spending money on them and start doing
something for the teens that have to grow up around them. |

SPEEDING IN NEIGHBORHOODS
IS INSANE. I do around
15-30 mph in neighborhoods.
When I see people walking, I
slow down to 5-8 mph and go to the opposite side of the road. When you
see people walking dogs, do the same. Dog are like children, they are
very very unpredictable. So would that extra 30 seconds be worth a
life? I'm not saying I don't drive fast, I do in fact. There is a time
and place for speed...and its not in neighborhoods when people are
walking around. |

charges were dropped, and if you knew what you were supposed to know
you wouldn't be pointing

DOWN in Eden Pines and all of our Big Pine Neighborhoods!
This is the second time I have mentioned Palm Avenue and try to avoid
that street so I can live to see 100. There are many many arrests for
reckless driving down here and I am so amazed to see people driving 50
+ mph while I am taking a walk in our 25 mph neighborhood. One of our
neighbors got hit this year and passed away because of vehicular
manslaughter who has not yet been caught. We need a task force,
neighborhood watch and more Officers patrolling. There was a drunken
prowler in my yard early this morning and I am going to protect myself
& family, my property and my animals with continued surveillance and
vigilance. Will a paintball gun or some pepper spray get the bad guys
attention? What else besides a GUN could protect ourselves
while in our homes and walking down our streets? Is it legal to throw
a rock at a speeding car so no more people, deer and pets get murdered
by speeders? Going to get a big fence and a .357 for the home
invader. Don't mess with Big Piners. |

live in Eden pines and this past Wednesday evening around 5 o'clock
while walking up Palm Ave.,
I came upon a beautiful dead cat that someone had hit with a
car. I laid it to the side of the road and seen that it had died I
asked people in the area if they knew who's cat it was. I faxed US-1
radio on Big Pine,
but they never put it on. The
rude lady that answered the phone Thursday said why would you want
to put a dead cat on the radio? I told her I was concerned that it
was some ones pet. Well,
after many signs thru the neighborhood the poor beautiful cat lays
to rot.

Those of us that have lived here long
enough don't see the "stairway to heaven" as a
landmark. A piece of unfinished business isn't a landmark, it's a
landmine. You want to talk about landmarks, we actually have had a
few of those here on Big Pine Key. Look hard enough and you will
find them. They are things with history behind them. One of my old
favorites was so badly damaged by hurricane Georges that it's only
half standing. It's history was from Harry Truman playing poker
there in the 40's. and then later it was an unbelieveable party
house with lots of unbelieveable memories held by many long time
locals. And huge spiders on the old banana trees out back. We called
them banana spiders. They are actually giant orb spiders that
haven't been seen there since hurricane Georges. That was a
landmark. Get over tearing down shoddily built steps.

The comment I wrote about the ice cream

staff. The owners are courteous and I've never witnessed any harsh

John and Dawn Ward of FISH CUTTERS are very nice people. Of all
the years I've delivered to them they have been extremely nice. I've
heard nothing but good about them through all the years I've known of
them. Maybe you had one bad time, maybe
you have a grudge. The Fish Gutters comment was barley funny
considering the fact that you
do, in fact,
have to gut fish to eat them. |

people who like everything are the owners. And disgruntled employees
seem to have a lot to say too. |

Restaurant Review: I have to
say that I have been very disappointed in my last two visits to
Robs. I have bragged and bragged on how the portions
were so large. Two weeks ago, I got the oyster basket, and the few
oysters I got were very small...mostly breading. I gave them the
benefit of the doubt and just brushed it off as low inventory due to
hurricane evacuation. This week I ordered the full order of seafood
marinara, and it was much smaller than in the past.
I even asked the waitress to make sure she didn't give me the
half order and she said no. Rob, I hope you are reading this, and
will take note that us locals do notice things like this.

I have not hesitated
to drive to Key West or
Marathon to shop for groceries over the last few years because
of the disarray, unreliability of products, rotten veggies, long lines,
etc. at Winn-Dick-Me
here on BPK, but I had no choice on Friday and was pleasantly
surprised at the new changes. Cleaning it up and bringing it up to
the 21st century. Now, let's see if they remember to stock up because
Fantasy Fest is coming and there will be tons of people shopping.
Let's see whether price gouging occurs then as well. I'm
hopeful now... |

As I recall an article
in the Citizen several months back, the Stairway to Heaven
was built by a young architect and his wife just after they graduated
from college as sort of a dream project. Twenty years later they are
divorced. The architect, still in business on the mainland, and his
new wife have no interest in completing the project. In exchange for
forgiveness of about $100,000 worth of fines and back taxes, he gave
it to the county. The county has considered it a hazard, especially
for kids - more so that the usual construction site because those
stairs go up pretty high with no guard rails. The county is going to
tear it down and I seem to remember something about turning the site
into a park. |

Cure: When my oldest daughter was born, she was also
cursed with those horrible hiccups and her grandmother told me to
mix 1 teaspoon of Caro syrup to a 4 ounce bottle of warm water. Now
I assume that would be an infant dosage maybe you could try a larger
dose. It did work for her. Good Luck.

Restaurant Review: I love Fishcutters
on Summerland Key. The food is amazing and the people are so friendly
there. It is a 100% improvement of Monte's
and a great replacement. It's
about time we had a top quality fresh seafood restaurant in the area
again. I heard they are having a stone crab festival there October
17th. Sound like its going to be a great locals party. I hope to see
everyone there. |

The rest of the restaurants on Big Pine have
been very disappointing lately. Food and service quality are WAY

I stopped in HOUSE OF MUSIC out
of curiosity to check it out. My drink was served in a filthy
glass with some type of crust on the rim. When I showed it to
the bartender she just dumped it into a plastic cup and pushed it back
to me. UGH! Meanwhile there’s a sloppy low-life drunk at
the bar half passed out and another drunk couple engaged in an
argument. The place is a dump. And they want to charge $$$
to listen to some old, washed-up band. They’re never gonna' make

I’m grateful for how lucky we have all been to have been missed by all
these major storms. I’m
grateful that I woke up today feeling pretty good. I’m grateful
for my friends, my wonderful
co-workers who are actually somewhere between close friends and
family, my sweet, loving and one of a kind husband, my 3 beautiful
children. I’m grateful for life! |

A New Hurricane: The National
Weather Service has issued a warning for yet another catastrophic
hurricane following on the heels of Charley, Ivan and Jeanne. The path
of this hurricane zigs and zags, and is therefore highly
unpredictable. Experts predict that this one will cause the most
damage to the United States that we have experienced in four years.
They are naming this one Hurricane Kerry. Be advised,

general, have way too many drunks with tattoos and horrible dental
hygiene. The only reason we're here is the weather and the

er, Music. What a dump. I tried it out of curiosity and
got my short poured drink in a filthy glass. When I pointed it out to

I love the Big Pine Restaurant -- John and Sam have
done a wonderful job upgrading it and the food is great.
They work very hard and always make us feel very welcome.
Anyone can have a less than satisfactory experience at any
establishment -- things do go wrong -- but this is the kind of place
where you can talk to the owner and they will do their best to make
things come out right. Kudos to the John and Sam and staff at
the Big Pine Restaurant!

The
first picture is of one of Flagler's
engines. It
is one of the first ever out
of the mold. Les (Glassworks)
gave it to me and one for each of my sisters. I
watched him make it. The
next picture is one of those
infamous insulators. It
is made by the Hemingray Co. I
collected a bunch when I
was young. I got cut on the
bottom of my foot bad collecting them, 24 stitches. Ouch.
