![]() Happy Halloween Everybody! Have fun, stay safe! |
| 31 | Another one bites the dust. I recently was let go from Rob's bar and grill. I am writing about the way the owner fired me. I was accused of claming one of his managers stole money from me. Funny that he should know about this even though I told no one about the two hundred plus that was missing on my shift; not even the manager that was on shift that is accusing me of blaming them. I was asked to clean something to get my attention; in my haste to impress I left my money were my manager on shift was left to watch over. When I returned I realized there were hundred dollar bills and fifties missing. I still said nothing. When I went in the next day for my schedule the owner informed me that the manager on shift that night had told him I was blaming him for stealing my money (which I never told anyone about on this occasion. I took it as a chalked-up lesson and it made me realize to watch who I trust. When I came to pick up my check the owner, in front of everyone, (employees, and costumers) accused me of blaming his manager for stealing and then fired me in public eye for everyone to hear. He did not ask or even let me say anything about the situation. So I am explaining now. I definitely do not plan to ever return. |

FORMER HEAD OF THE
ARMY CORPS. Seems to me that too many people here
spend too much time complaining about how they can't do things here;
and at the same time are happy the Keys are as they are. We live in
a very special place and just because more people are trying to move
here doesn't mean we need to change the quality of life we all enjoy.
That even includes the dirt bags that live from beer to beer. Many
of us complained when the first condo's were built in Key West along
the south shore of the Island, blocking the views of the sunset
many years ago. I am so thankful that we have the prohibiting laws
and guidelines we do have here in the Keys because without them, we
would have more Pritam Sighn projects coming up where the grass and
trees used to grow. Where once stood memorable places where Tinsley
Ellis used to play. Quit complaining and enjoy the pleasure of the
uniqueness of Big Pine Key and be thankful for the wildlife we still
have, even if you aren't a tree hugger and don't ever admire the
beauty of Big Pine Key. How about enjoying the fact that we still
recognize our neighbors here and that won't change too much. We are
limited in the number of houses we have. Sometimes the "regulators"
go too far, but at least they are there to prevent some of the "Miami-ization"
going on elsewhere.

Did you turn your clocks back? |
|
| 31 |
That is
the Breezeswept Hotel
(the Looe Key Reef Resort)
not the Mariner Resort
(the good old days were when it was the Vista
Linda Resort before the Kump's
turned it into a smugglers cove and started dumping cocaine onto
the island).
|
| 31 | The motel pictured was the Breezeswept Motel (Breezeswept Estates Subdivision-duh!). It is now and has been for some time the Looe Key Reef Resort & Tiki Bar. For a long time, it was the only fresh water pool in the area that actually welcomed well behaved locals. They had a liquor take out store long before Joe Glenn had the Tiki bar built. The Motel also had (still has) doors in front of each room, and doors out the back to the dock. How convenient in the old days of smuggling. The building looks nothing like the old Mariner Resort in any way. |
| 31 | I just read that Peg Leg's restaurant at the old Marina Resort was purchased with drug money. I didn't know that. My smuggler friends and I used to hang out there and we didn't even know that Mr. Pegg was also dealer. |
| 31 | I think you may be mistaken about the mangroves. I think you need a permit to "trim" and then it is only a certain amount but not to the point that they are "removed", no matter how small they are. Now, I personally don't care if you "removed" your mangroves, hell, come and remove mine, and the buttonwood also (sorry Maya). But when you claimed that you followed the rules and that if others would just follow the rules, life would be grand. And you say that you did something that myself and others believe to be not following the rules, you are going to get blasted. Lighten up, it was sanctimonious crap spewing. |

Did you vote? Vote
Kerry. Another 8 of our fine young
men died today. What a horrible mess
Bush has this country in. He is a Beast.

This
website should be kept for local issues not national, political,
issues. It
should not be used to bash good people who have had a moment or two
of bad judgment. You show
peoples' arrest photos,
but not their convictions. Half of
those arrests are thrown out.
You bash good people trying to make a living down here.
(Sam
& John,
Tara, Dave
& kids,
John &
Dawn Ward,
etc.) C'mon I
know where your skeletons are buried. Keep
on spewing your trash and you will end up seeing yourselves posted
one day.

I think a more appropriate title for this
section should be "Losers and Liars".
Good grief,
people, get a life and an education.
|
| 31 |
Apologies; I spoke too soon. The ammo dump story
is still being sorted out. Please stay informed and follow the
updates through various sources.
|
| 31 | |
| 31 | So let me get this straight. If you are a good looking women on Big Pine Key you get harassed for it. Then the guys complain about there not being any good looking girls on Big Pine Key. Are you nincompoops starting to get it yet. Duh! |
| 31 |
Sam and John
(BP Coffee Shop). You are fine, fine people and you and your
business are an asset to our community. We are glad you are here.
Don't change a thing.
|
| 31 |
The
first picture is of one of Flagler's
engines. It
is one of the first ever out
of the mold. Les (Glassworks)
gave it to me and one for each of my sisters. I
watched him make it. The
next picture is one of those
infamous insulators. It
is made by the Hemingray Co. I
collected a bunch when I
was young. I got cut on the
bottom of my foot bad collecting them, 24 stitches. Ouch. |
| 31 |
Hey,
Mr. Padget, want some votes from Big Pine? Ax Axford.
|
| 31 |
Vote
for John Padget. You
need a big change for the good of the children.
|
| 31 | The only way our children will be able to get a better education in this district is to elect an outsider. The local, good ol' boy, candidate Mr. Acevido will deliver the same ol' stuff that's placed our school system at the bottom of the heap. We really need a new thinker like Padget to get this school system out of that heap. |
| 31 |
No we
don't need a Wendy's here on BP. We
have too many restaurants that would be put
out of business. Which
means jobs are lost. No one
can compete with their
prices. In the shopping
center alone 3 places would be severely affected, excluding WD.
Has anyone formed a committee to protest like we did for
Walgreen's?
|
| 31 |
Cats.
I drove through the Avenues
yesterday and there were free roaming cats everywhere.
Don't those residents
realize that the domestic cat is an exotic predator whose instincts
cause it to hunt and kill indiscriminately, no matter how well fed?
I feel sorry for any wildlife that try to live or migrate thru that
area.
|
| 31 |
To the guy with the unstable
girlfriend: Do you think mental illness cures itself?
Your anchor gets heavier with time & it will continue to lower your
stock. Certainly you can do better than the current nutball you
have settled for. I feel sorry for you & everyone involved. Good
luck.

Vic Anderson of the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers retired earlier this year. Like him or
not, it was Vic and people like him that kept the Keys from looking
like Miami. Perhaps Vic did spend an inordinate amount of time on
details that may seem trivial to some, but it's the incremental
degradation that eventually adds up to an environmental mess. Vic
tried his very best to hold the line on the destruction of the Keys,
at great personal cost. Vic is a man of principle and integrity, and
we were fortunate to have him as our environmental watchdog for so
many years. As for the plugged canals on Big Pine, Ramrod and Little Torch...well those canals were plugged because they were dredged illegally back in the heyday of rampant environmental destruction and ruination of the Keys. The plugging of those canals was the penalty for the illegally dredging them. If there was any real environmental justice, the canals would have been backfilled and the land restored. Seriously, folks. Haven't the Keys seen enough thrashing and development? How much more development do we as a community really need? Lots of folks complain about government regulation, but they sure like that vacant lot next to their house. Next time your walking the dog and enjoying the peace and beauty of Big Pine, realize there are plenty of folks that had to forfeit their dream of building so you can enjoy your walk. Think what the Keys would look like if every lot was developed. How long would the lines in Winn Dixie be? Traffic anyone? Any fish left in the sea? Would you still want to live here? Think it through. |

I am the sanctimonious crap spewing, got miner, mangrove
murderer. Yes, they do die on their own;
and yes you are allowed to trim a certain amount. The ones I
"gradually" removed were no bigger than a potted plant of average
size, altogether. Threats are so much fun. Thanks for keeping an
eye out for me since you know who I am. I have a copy of the
overhead photos and will be happy to share. Have a wonderful
Fantasy Fest weekend.

Re the ammo dump . Your
statements are fat and utter lies. KSTP St Paul Minn. Channel 5
news crew was with U.S. soldiers in Iraq as they discovered large
amounts of unguarded explosives just after the fall of Baghdad. This
has become a sensitive issue, since tons of explosives are reported
missing from that area and are possibly now in the hands of the enemy. The news crew was with soldiers from the 101st Airborne division on April 18, 2003 when they checked out the bunkers at or near Al-Qaqaa. Inside those bunkers, they found a variety of explosives. The films of their visit are all over the media (including CNN last night). So, it wasn't gone before the US arrived as Bush claims. Bush failed to secure the explosives and now it is in the hands of terrorists. The world is far more unsafe now. Thanks to Bush and his colleagues. VOTE KERRY. |
| 30 |
Restaurant Review: I tried a Radagest beer or two (or three) at the Bohemia restaurant on Flagler in K.W. With a name like that I thought it would be German, but it was Czechoslovakian. What good beer and what old lousy food. I think the food was left over from Tito’s era. |
| 30 | Fashion Police: Ditto on the stupid visor. This isn't Pebble Beach Country Club. That women thinks she's the queen of Big Pine and we're all peasants. |
| 30 | To the person who wrote in about Sam, her visor, body parts, you should be ashamed. Maybe the "visor" keeps hair out of the food, maybe she feels comfortable in it during her 15 hour day. Obviously, you must be perfect to pass judgment on someone as dear and sweet as Sam, or maybe you are like the rest of the mean-spirited people who are just plain jealous that you don't look like her. I for one enjoy this web site but I was embarrassed to read those entries. As far as the silicone, do you live with her, some people are just born lucky. It takes hard work, excise and good eating habits to look like that, So while your eating your twinkles and thinking of who you can hurt next, why don't you take a jog or bike ride and work on yourself. |
| 30 | I certainly wish I had nothing better to do than complain of politics, notice a local restaurant owners irritating attire, watch my neighbors trim mangroves and some of the other bulls**t Piners consider worthy of making comments about on this website. For such a great community we have some very small people in our midst. Rise above it! |
| 30 |
Note to editor: Why
do you post the slams about people's appearance on here
(woman with visor?) (Ed: The only way to really know what a community thinks is to publish everything, even the crap. We disapprove of much of this stuff, but we are not censors. That's the whole purpose of Kudos and Whiners.) |
| 30 | Speaking of silicone, Dawn Ward (wife of John Ward of Fishcutters) has the owner from the Coffee Shop beat. Those tiny low-cut shirts she wears are hot!! |
| 30 |
To the women who owns the Big
Pine Coffee Shop. I hope you don't care what some obnoxious
low life scumbags who are obviously burning up with jealous say about
you. Those people are an embarrassment to themselves and this island
of Big Pine Key. Big Pine Key seems to have been a haven for those
types, most of us here wish they would just leave. Eventually they drink themselves to death. You work hard take care of yourself and are an asset to this community and choose to where a visor while you are doing it. Believe this the community of Big Pine Key is happy with what you have done and are proud to have you as a business owner, especially with your visor on! |
| 30 |
The B.P. Restaurant
has the best damn baby back ribs you'll ever eat, I
never really noticed the lady's visor. There
are more interesting protrusions on her anatomy.
Definitely Peg Bundy.
|
| 30 | I agree 2 for 20 pizza is not only nasty pizza but the cook is very unsanitary. Picking his nose and then preparing food. They never use gloves to prepare the food nor do they wash their hands. I'm not sure the cook even washes his body. |
| 30 |
Let's Ax Axford! Sugarloaf
needs a principal that cares about our kids not FCAT scores.
Our kids deserve better.
Get rid of her.
|
| 30 |
I have lived in BPK
only 4 years and I, too,
am against any fast food places coming to town. Once the first is
here then the rest will follow. I also think when the new
Paradise Mobil is built and the old one torn
down another piece of BPK will be gone forever. Take your pictures
now so the next generation can see what BPK used to look like.
|
| 30 | I can't wait for Wendy's to come to Big Pine. It's about time we get a fast food restaurant on Big Pine. It is impossible to take a lunch break and get a good meal cooked quickly leaving time to actually enjoy your food before you have to go back to work. Why is it when you call ahead to pick up food that they don't start cooking it till you get there? That defeats the purpose of calling ahead. Coco's is the worst about that. And they are so rude when you go in and expect your food to be ready. |
| 30 |
I wish I could go through the Winn
Dixie checkout without the cashier complaining to me. I
personally hate grocery shopping to begin with and after spending
time searching every isle because they moved EVERYTHING in the store
and dodging rude people that walk right in
front of me like I'm not even there;
then I have to hear the cashiers complaining about managers, broken
registers, not getting breaks and whatever else is on their minds.
Keep it to yourselves. I don't
want to hear it. I have my own problems.
Just ring up my stuff and let me go. Oh,
and the self-check-outs
suck just like at K-Mart. Winn Dixie should have done their homework
on that one.
|
| 30 |
Ed,
you haven't lived here long enough to give out island history,
you got some things right,
but Les used the
insulators to make stuff with. There
is still a pile of them in the woods near there. He
also used old broken black glass bottles and any other glass he
could find laying around. You
see, as a little kid, Les
used to let me sit and watch them work all the time. I
have a collection of things he gave me when they were still cooling
off. God blesses us with the
little things in life to remember.
(Ed: I stand corrected. Would you send some photos so we all can see these pieces? Thanks.) |
| 30 |
How long do we have to look at that eyesore that used to be
Montes?
|
| 30 | The Breezeswept Motel was the one at the Tiki Bar on Ramrod. It still looks the same |
| 30 | The Breeze Swept Motel is Looe Key now. |
| 30 |
I don't think that is Breeze Swept
Motel. It never looked that good. It looks to me like it
is from the old Mariner's Resort. The pool was out off the
Restaurant, Peg Leg's. Those were the days!
|
| 30 | That picture looks like the Looe Key Motel which used to be Breeze Swept in the 60's. |

Do mangroves not die on their own? Should they not
then be removed? This is an honest question, since I don't know
anything about them and haven't had any dealings with the situation.
|
|
I saw a reference to the Big Pine Key
Botanical Society a few days back. Where can I get
more information about this group and their activities? (Ed: Call Peggy 744-0241.) |
|
| 29 |
Kressler: 3 years prison would be plenty, if spent
suspended from the ceiling by the offending body parts.
|
| 29 |
To the person who asked why the woman
at The Big Pine Restaurant always wears the sun visor,
please remember that this is a person you are talking about, who has
real feelings. Samantha is a very nice person. I have gotten to
know her from going into the restaurant.
She & John have done a great job of cleaning up the place and
improving the over-all quality of the restaurant.
I think we are lucky to have them here.
|
| 29 | To the person asking about the Big Pine Coffee Shop owner wearing a sun visor. Get a life! Wahhhhhhh! |
| 29 | I know I should not be saying this but I cannot save myself, the she owner of the coffee shop wears that visor to cut the glare coming from all that silicone she has on the upper part of her body. |
| 29 | I would love to see what the person looks like that is passing judgment on the women in the coffee shop. |
| 29 | I have seen the lady that owns the Big Pine Coffee Shop with that visor too! She stands out with it on that’s for sure. I, too, think she looks a little ridiculous to be wearing it all the time. I thought I was the only one who noticed she wears it all the time. I think she kind of looks like Peg Bundy from Married with Children. |
| 29 |
|
| 29 | The sweet girl that works at Fishcutters is Mia and she isn't related to John and Dawn. She's married to Robert. He's the guy you see cooking all the delectable treats we go to Fishcutters for. They are a wonderful couple and you are right, Mia does brighten up the whole place. |
| 29 | I agree, let's get rid of Theresa Axford. She cares only about how she appears and not about what is best for our children. The problem is that she feels like she owns the school and anybody who opposes her gets the shaft. Either job wise or the kids get it. Have any of you seen what she has done with the SAC meetings? The people who want to run who would make a positive change aren't even let on the ballots. This isn't a fair or just system at all. Maybe she ought to move out of the keys and take her "artist" husband with her. What kind of art does he do anyway? Has anybody ever seen him "do" anything? There are many parents who would like to see the kids learn more that just how to take an FCAT test. How about teaching our kids how to live and function productively in the real world? That wouldn't get FCAT money though. |
| 29 |
Re: Big Pine Glassworks. The owner was Les
Cunningham, a local legend at the time. He died in a head-on crash
with original refuge manager Jack Watson, Sr., back in the early
70's. They were looking for key deer poachers. Both
vehicles were running with
lights out at night on Key Deer Blvd. when the crash occurred.
Watson survived. Cunningham operated the glass foundry in the back
of the (Montego Bay) property with a small shop up front. I don't
know about the glass insulators, but I know he made a lot of
knick-knack stuff, paperweights, etc.
|
| 29 | I remember the Big Pine Glassworks only vaguely, as I was a little kid. I do have a beautiful blown glass swan made by the guy that worked there. I believe we had two in our family, it was news to me that it was a practical job as well as an artistic pursuit. Does anyone else have any pieces from there? I don't know if the guy had a side business or was friends with my parents. |
| 29 |
I don't think the Glassworks
ever made electrical insulators.
They made art glass paper weights that were very beautiful,
but who needed expensive paperweights?
|
| 29 | We moved to Big Pine in '68. The Glassworks was here. I think they closed in '71, maybe '72. |
| 29 | Re: BPK Glassworks. Thanks for the info. Do you mean the building that was Margaret Wright’s real estate office? I bought a Big Pine Key Glassworks ashtray on ebay and it is very cool. |
| 29 |
Want to see the
most frightening thing this Halloween season?
|
| 29 | Brett Cantler has a disease called cycloid (?) vomiting syndrome. I had never heard of it and am not sure what it is, but he has been in Miami Children's Hospital since late Aug. That is about all I know. |
| 29 |
If you like hair in your pizza and want to find a piece of a roach’s leg underneath the crust of your pizza then 2 for 20 Pizza is the place for you! I ate there one year ago and got the hair on my pizza. I gave the place a rest then figured it was an honest mistake. So I gave it another go three weeks ago, and low and behold, a cute little ROACH’S LEG was under my nephew’s pizza slice. I will never buy another thing from this obviously unclean establishment. I think they should be inspected very closely by the proper agency. God only knows what people eat that they can’t even see from this place. Think again before you eat there. |
| 29 |
|
| 29 | Please do not ever let Corporate America into Big Pine. That means no fast food chains, or Wal-Marts. Winn Dixie and CVS is more then enough. You could consider a little more space for small businesses, a county Group Insurance policy so small business owners can afford health insurance for their staff and a little bit more affordable housing. I recently had to move from Big Pine because I discovered this great place a little to late to afford a home and I never was able to afford the cost of health insurance even if I was lucky to find a job that did offer it. There are very few employers in the keys that can afford a good benefit package for their people. The County is about it. Even though my standard of living went down when I arrived in Big Pine three years ago I was still so much happier there then any place I had ever lived before. It was the people, my neighbors that made the difference. I miss being a part of the Big Pine community. But I will visit often and spend my vacation money at all the local places. |
| 29 |
The ammo dump in question was listed by the UN inspectors as one to
be watched when the US moved in. An imbedded reporter for NBC was
with the soldiers when they arrived at the spot and reported it had
been emptied sometime before the US arrived there.
This story was first reported in April
2003 and conveniently recycled (minus relevant dates) in time to
cause a pre-election uproar.

RE: KRESSER SENTENCE.
3 years State Prison and 8 years sex offender probation.
What a joke! I am a victim of rape which occurred when I was
9 months pregnant and as a result I lost a baby son.
RAPE RUINS LIVES! Not
only the victim's,
but also the entire family. This
predator should have been put away for LIFE! Hopefully he will get
his "DUE" while serving his time and will never make it back to the
streets.
|
| 28 | The last thing we want in the keys is a Wal-mart, you are only thinking of yourself, not the business people that operate busnesses and stores through the Keys. How many more do you want them to put out of business and work? It's tough enough down here as it is. |
| 28 | Out of all the fast food restaurants that could come to Big Pine, why Wendy's? I don't even eat fast food that often, but come on, I'd rather have a McDonalds. |

Kerry is
not worthy to be a citizen of the United States much less
our President. At every opportunity he is belittling our country
and our soldiers which is undermining our efforts and sending the
wrong message to the world. He betrayed our country after the
Vietnam war and even met with the enemy in Paris. How come he
wasn't arrested for aiding and abetting the enemy? 2. He testified
that heads and ears were chopped off and villages burned by him and
others. Again, why wasn't he arrested? The man is a criminal. I
don't know how he sleeps at night.
|
| 28 | My dear kind Sirs. I would politely like to point out that Mr. Bush and his collegues have not made us more secure. Among other failures, they have failed to secure the explosives and secure the peace in Iraq. The PBS Frontline show last night Rumsfeld's war: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/pentagon/ did an excellent job of illustrating how the current Administration failed to prepare for this war and have made the world far less safe. Please kind Sirs and Madams, consider a vote for Kerry/Edwards on Nov 2. Thank you, sincerely. |
| 28 | We need more than one president. We need a presidential council of 5 leaders. No one man should be on such an ego trip. |
| 28 |
Re
updates; Maybe add a time stamp to your date box?
I think you've already used that sometimes. There's plenty of room
in the box, but I don't know how much trouble it is to add. You'd
have to standardize; time sent or time rec'd or time posted. No big
deal, I thoroughly enjoy catching up in here no matter when stuff
shows up!
|
| 28 | I like the updates. Please continue, if you have the time. I get to see your advertisements more and it gives me something to do during the afternoon, when my boss thinks I'm working. Just be consistent. |

GREAT. Thank

ROCKY THE ATTACK CAT.
I love this cat! He used to

That bug looks like a former grasshopper. The best cure is a
duck, they are death on the buggers! But you will
have another mess to deal with. At least it's all natural.
|
| 27 | If you have those grasshoppers you want to kill them all. They will not only kill your plants they will also kill your grass. I had them about 10 yrs. ago after I had planted all new sod. They were very pretty as babies black & orange. They ate all my new sprouts plus a lot of plants. You can hear them chewing away on the leaves of your plants! If you don't like squishing them you can wasp spray on them. |
| 27 | Those grasshoppers are VERY common and very distructive. Get some garden bug killer; or try the old favorite that I keep finding more uses for... cayanne pepper. |

Anyone out there know what is going on with our
community park?
When will they start?
I went to a meeting almost 2 years ago and everyone agreed to use
the Sugarloaf School field
as an alternative soccer field, that was 2 soccer seasons ago and
still nothing. I remember
Steve Miller working on this before I had children, my youngest is
now almost 11 years old. When will we get our park?
We need it, go check out Watson Field and how everyone is
using a corner of it to support all our youth activities;
and those who can't fit are over at St. Peter's practicing.
I think it's about time we all get together and find out what
the hold up is.
|
| 27 | I must say this, please vote for R. Acevedo. If you vote for Mr. Padget, you are voting against our teachers. He refuses to pay the teachers a living wage, even though everyone voted to allow more money to go to teachers salaries. I realize that he is not a conch and he is "shaking" things up, but that does not mean it is necessarily good. He is big business, look at all the people who gave to his campaign. Ed Swift has given him tons of $$$, why do you think that is? You do not get something for nothing. Look around, ask a teacher they will tell you. |
| 27 |
How do we get rid of Terry Axford?
Sugarloaf Elementary/Middle school Principal.
She does not want to be an elementary principal anymore;
she wants to move on to High School.
She doesn't do much to earn her $140,000
plus salary. Parents, let's get rid of her and get someone as our
principal that has the best interests of our children in mind.
It's time for a change.

All you Kerry folks be sure and get
out there and vote Wednesday, November 3rd, okay?
|
| 27 | Ah, you didn't kiss butts--you followed the rules, eh? But, you just admitted to removing mangroves to make room for that delicious seawall. Did you not know that removing mangroves is illegal? YOU BROKE THE RULES. And you preach to us about following rules? Oh, if only Vic knew. If only he had checked those aerial photos ahead of time. You'd be whacking up that lovely seawall in no time and replanting twice the amount of mangroves you removed. |

Granted, the US has
a lot that needs fixing,
but it will be pretty hard to fix any of it if we aren't keeping the
terrorists at bay. Busy
running for their lives. I've seen Bush deal with that, I haven't
even heard a good idea from Kerry. However,
we do need some genius to come up with a flash of brilliance to deal
with immigration.
|
| 27 |
Has anyone noticed how the
Kerry supporters are so fanatical and rude in their
emails? Is this a requirement to be a Democrat? Is it learned,
or were they born with it? Inquiring minds want to know. They say
the Republicans are using fear to push their campaign. Yeah, right,
like the Democrats aren't doing the same thing? It's also amazing
that 9/11 is being blamed on the Bush administration, when he had
only been in office part of a year. When, in fact, most of this can
be blamed on previous administrations, such as Clinton's (not
grabbing Bin Laden when he had the chance?) Oh, but that's okay,
he's a Democrat.
|
| 27 | Our Constitution: They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, its worked for over 200 years and we're not using it anymore. |

Hostess
Review: Mangrove Mamas.
Your simple job is to smile & say, “Hello & Goodbye” and seat
the customers according to their wishes. We ate dinner there early
Tuesday evening after walking in & saying hello to you, your only
reply was, “Two? Inside or Out?” After that
you threw the menus on the unleveled table & waddled away. We
requested a bigger table and your response was that it could be too
busy (not), but you
hesitantly obliged the customers. We would have ordered another
round of drinks and desserts, but the restaurant was freezing-cold
to keep the staff comfortable. Other diners were obviously chilly;
bundled-up and bolting out the front door. My glands are swollen!
The final blow was leaving & not hearing goodbye. They are more
hospitable in Blockbuster video than your mistreatment. I am going
to guess your family owns the joint from your dirty jeans and a very
bad attitude. The wait staff and the food are way too good for such
a bad first impression. The restaurant would be better served with
you in the back, washing dishes.

I just wanted to say how OUTSTANDING I think our local community is for supporting little Brett Cantler’s cause by showing up at the car wash on Saturday at M&M auto. Everyone from the children who helped wash cars and sell baked goods to the adults who handled the auction, the raffle and washing all those cars. And, boy, there were a lot of them. These people washed 4 cars at a time, constantly moving them in and out. It was really amazing. Also, I think it’s wonderful that so many area businesses donated goods and services to be auctioned or raffled off. Julie Allen, your cookies were absolutely beautiful and, boy, was that biscotti with chocolate good. I can’t believe you baked so much stuff for this bake sale. You made it great. I was, also, so amazed by the numerous people who just stopped by and gave donations without even getting there car washed. Marine Bank did a great job with the food they sold. Everything was really yummy and all proceeds went to help the Cantlers. This car wash truly showed yet again how Big Piners take care of their neighbors. I heard one man say to another “ Big Piners always take care of their neighbors…they donate and ask what is was for…later.” How true. What a great place to live. |

| 27 | Okay. I had to go through the archives, back to August. And during August, it looks like you placed updates (other than morning posts) at the top of that day. Then during September and most of October the updates were below all the morning posts. Yesterday, the afternoon posts were co-mingled with the morning posts. I have probably lost two thirds of your readers at this point, and it is no big deal. Just bored without the cable. |
| 27 |
I, too,
have noticed the switcheroo. It's as if some posts
are answered the same day. How can that be?
|
| 27 | (Ed: You Pinees are too sharp! You've noticed the playing around with the postings. We're trying to figure out the best way to present updates; and if we should even have them.) |
| Tuesday October 26 2004 |
Ooooo. Scary! |
| 26 | I spoke with a Big Piner today who has mucho oleander around his house (and mucho deer) and he told me that the deer don't eat it. |
| 26 |
Great job with this page. I read it
every day. And see your advertisers every day also. But what is up?
Are you playing switcheroo on us also? First, you
put new (same day) posts above the old posts. Then, they are below the
old posts. Now they are co-mingled. Maybe trying to find the best fit
or just seeing if we are paying attention. (Ed: I don't see it. Try hitting F5 or the refresh button on your browser.) |
| 26 | Restaurant Review: We've been ordering delivery from China Garden for over seven years. They arrive fast, and the food has always been excellent; the quality hasn't changed throughout this time, although we miss the California rolls that they offered years ago. The steamed dumplings and shredded pork with garlic sauce are particularly delicious. Good Chinese restaurants are rare, and we are fortunate to have them here on Big Pine. |

Go Kerry. No More

Tuesday, November 2nd national celibacy
day. No Bush No
Dick. Go Kerry.
|
| 26 |
VOTE KERRY! If Bush is doing
such a brilliant job, why are boatloads of refugees
still landing like crazy. A terrorist could easily land right in
our backyards. Why are
people getting into supposedly secure airports
to stow away in hubcaps?
Why are professional
workers not able to get health insurance or meds?
Why, why, why?
I'm so scared of Bush being allowed, by the ignorance of voters
and non-voters,
to continue this nightmare.
Bush is only playing the game to frighten us. Believe me, if he is
re-elected, you will be a sorry human beings.
Change can only be a positive act at this point. Please vote
Kerry. You can vote now at
the Public Library at the Winn Dixie Shopping Center.
|
| 26 |
|
| 26 | Why don't we have a national voting system? The States aren't doing a good job and everyone has a different way of handling it. Thousands of lawyers are on standby for November 2nd. Worse yet, some of our troops aren't going to get their absentee ballots in time. All because of a lawsuit. Go figure! |
| 26 |
To all you Kerry loving, left wing bleeding
hearts out there, please listen up.
Your guy is not qualified
nor is he capable of running this nation in peacetime, let alone
what we are up against today.
George Bush did not ask for attacks on NYC & DC & Penn. He has done
EVERYTHING he can to stop it, and just based on how Sept. 11th was
handled he deserves 4 more
years!
|
| 26 | |
| 26 | Don’t forget to vote on Nov. 2. Still undecided? Consider: Kerry voted for tax increases over 90 times. He has never supported a tax decrease. He consistently votes against any military spending to support our armed forces and voted against funding intelligence gathering for homeland security just after 9-11. He claims to support the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms but is a co-sponsor of the most restrictive gun control bill ever introduced. (He accepted a campaign gift of a shot gun and praised it’s quality yet it would be illegal under his bill, if passed. His so called ‘hunting trip’ has been shown to be a sham to pander the sportsman vote.) When addressing autoworkers he bragged about his SUV’s but less than two weeks later he denied owning an SUV while talking to an environmental group. His distortions and lies go on forever and he will say anything that his audience of the day wants to hear. He claims to support the working middle class men and women yet, voting for more than 90 tax increases doesn’t sound like support to me. He supports a 50 cent PER GALLON TAX INCREASE on gasoline. I guess he will be supporting working people while they’re walking to work. Please vote on Nov. 2nd. But, do so armed with the facts. Investigate Kerry’s Senate voting record over his 20 years in office and look at the legislation he has voted against and voted for. (Consistently more big government, more taxes and less individual rights) You may not like Bush for a variety of reasons but Kerry is a frightening thought. |

School superintendent: I’ll vote for John Padget because he doesn’t need the job. The other candidate is desperate for work and has to have the job. Padget’s made more innovative changes in these last couple of years (and pissed off more tired ol’ bureaucrats) than all the others have done in their collective careers. Check the record. We have a lousy school system and with Duncan Mathewson on the board and John Padget running it things are sure to change for the better. |

Who's butt did I kiss to be able to build a seawall? Well, let's
see. We started many years before by very gradually removing the
mangroves that were growing on the bank of the canal. Then we
applied for the permit. This was very expensive. Then we paid for
a biological survey. Then we paid for another elevation survey.
Then we waited and waited. Finally we had someone from the county
come by then we paid another firm to send all the letters required
to all the federal and state and local agencies and waited some
more. After about 18 months total we were granted the permit and
work commenced. At each step in the building process there were
more inspections until it
was finally finished and inspected for the last time. A lot of work,
but the day it was completed our property value increased by another
$50.000.00. There was no butt kissing. We just followed
the rules.
|
| 25 | You followed the rules? I should say not. It is ILLEGAL to remove the mangroves, no matter how gradually. Be careful who you admit that to. |

| 24 | Actually the charges that Mark Kresser pled GUILTY to were from two separate people. It happened to me when I was 12 years old. He ruined my life. He deserves what he got and he should NOT have people defending him. Would you like your 12 year old daughter to have her breasts and vagina fondled? I didn't enjoy it and I WISH it didn't happen. Just because he didn't stick his penis inside me doesn't mean he didn't ruin me. HOW can I trust anyone now? If I can't trust to sleep at a friends house without being sexually molested. Key deer are not
indigenous to the Keys. They are white tailed deer brought from
upstate New York by Flagler for sport. Key deer are not inherently
diminutive. They were taken out of their natural habitat where they
thrived, and placed in a fragile environment incapable of supporting
their dietary and territorial needs. They are not an endangered
species as they are not a species in itself, but the result of
environmental conditioning. Like the albino deer at Argon Labs in
Illinois, they have been compromised by negative environmental
conditioning and over time, resulted in a degradation of the
species. You are being fooled by an illusion created for no other
reason than to justify government involvement, grants and funding
for redundant layers of bureaucracy and unnecessary jobs. Just try
building a dock, deck or porch in a refuge for bogus deer.

| 24 | Re: Follow the rules. Now here's a typical bit of advice coming from a "got-miner". Get off your high horse and tell us who's butt did you kiss? You don't even know the rules. A limited number of permits are issued per quarter for new construction on Big Pine, so houses are allowed if you're willing to put up with the ROGO and cesspit credit game. And what a game it is; favoring the rich who have way too much time and money on their hands. But those who bought their lots years ago never realized they may never be able to build their dream home--because the rules have changed. As a property owner you have certain unalienable rights. Legislature that impedes these rights or favors certain socio-economic groups should be questioned and rigorously scrutinized. Fences also are allowed as long as they conform to the opacity, height and setback requirements. But as I've already said, perfectly conforming docks that follow the rules--are still being prohibited by good 'ol boy Vic. Ah, but the plugged canal issue has nothing to do with too many houses or key deer. It so perfectly illustrates the strong arm tactics of the Army Corps of Engineers and one Vic Anderson's hidden agendas. Do your research before you spout off that sanctimonious crap. I bet you break rules. Your type always do when there is personal advantage involved. |
| 24 | Re Army Corps of Engineers: I agree with you about just ignoring them. If we all ignore them, hopefully they'll go away. But for all practical purposes, maybe there's a better way to remove the thorn in our side. Vic Anderson is the problem and he'll fight for dear life to keep his cushy job. He'll find reasons so obscure and absurd that they defy logic and all rational thought. Why can't you build, why canals can't be opened? It's an embarrassment to our community and an insult to our intelligence. Someone ought to write a story, and publish it nationally, about the abject stupidity, hypocrisy, bias and political melee connected with the building and permitting process here in the Keys. It's laughable, but unfortunately for us, it isn't funny. Or maybe we can go over his head and get him fired for over-burdening the public with biased and highly flawed regulations that encroach property owners' rights to build and improve their homes, but sustain one's personal advantage and gain at the public's expense. |

I understand the
House of Music is going to have an open mike night for

| Saturday October 23 2004 |
Regarding the Army Corps. If one would follow the rules these guys are reasonable. You can't build houses because there are too many already. Fences on Big Pine are a no-no because of the Key Deer. You should have known about them before buying in a refuge. As for the dock, if you follow the rules and spend the money and take over a year for the permitting process maybe you'll get the permit. We built a wonderful seawall legally not too long ago. Follow the rules.
| 23 | Army Corp. of Engineers. Since many of us don't have the cash to pay-off the right people and they probably won't accept SEX as a pay off, why don't we just ALL ignore them and do whatever the Hell we want to do? When the code enforcers write us up, we will ALL ignore them. If entire communities disregard their rules, how can they prosecute everyone? Somehow we can vote them out of power. I want them off my property. | |||

I also know some of the people lately living in one of Rob's K.W. properties where he spent too much time. They were NOT the cream of the crop! If you read with both eyes, you would have seen that the posting said Rob ALLEGEDLY Od'ed on drugs. And if you lived here more than a few years, you'd know this wasn't the first ALLEGED drug OD in the area. In addition, any untimely death no matter the cause IS an unfortunate loss of humanity, especially when they are Good Guys, and Rob was one of the best I've been privileged to have known. Restaurant Review: The Galley Grill on Summerland Key – what a fantastic place! Delicious food with great specials. They don’t whisk any plates away when only one of you has finished eating (height of rudeness) and let you digest each course a bit before bringing out the next wonderful plateful. Oh, did I mention the value for money? Very impressive. My husband and I were sick to death of the same old boring menus everywhere with their “if it’s not fried it ain’t died” approach. Galley Grill’s food is generous in portion, tasty and the staff are so welcoming and professional. Did I mention the value for money bit? Oh yes, so I did…. |

Yes, you do all need a government health plan. I have lived in many places around the world. I have yet to come across another developed country like the USA with such a 3rd world healthcare system. If Americans think it will mean no choice for them, it is complete nonsense. Even if there’s a government health plan you can still opt out and get your own private health insurance if you choose. The private health plans just open the doors to privately funded medical institutions e.g. the BUPA hospitals in the UK. They are by no means better equipped than the government hospitals – probably the only thing better about them is their food and they have carpet in the corridors to the private rooms! In France you can get 2 pairs of eye glasses, all your dentist visits and doctor visits free each year. Fair enough your taxes are approximately 45% but it worked out to be a pittance compared to what your American medical bills could reach if you dare to become ill. Let’s face it, in the USA, unless you are a veteran of a war, have a house to re-mortgage or have recently arrived over the border by land or sea with no identification papers, you’re buggered! By the way, I heard there’s a Medivan which comes to St. Peter’s Church every week – can anyone give me the day and time just in case I ever get sick because I can’t afford health insurance in the “land of the free”? |

| 23 | RE: H. I don't know which floating condo out there is H's however I did take note the other day when out and about in the skiffaroo. There is a beautiful, rather large, BLUE one with tarps across topside washed ashore. Some shirts are hanging out in the breeze off the stern, long sleeved I think, on this mighty vessel. WRECK ASHORE MATEYS. I always thought it to be the one that Mr. Rojas lived on prior to his untimely demise; or unscheduled arrival to Heaven where his favorite little boys are playing harps. We live in a world of smoke and
mirrors and it is difficult to discern that which is real. I
believe that all who are in government are of the same club. All we
can do is vote for the one who represents less intrusion on
our lives. Less regulation, less taxes, etc. One day, we
will have someone who could care less about money and power and we
will know him by his works. This is not spiritual. Our forefathers
built a nation on integrity. We must take it back. It will take
baby steps. The time for an end of the bi-cameral system is at
bay. Common sense must prevail. How else will the world take us
seriously. We must lead the world through strength, but we can only
do this with a clear conscience. We are the land "for the people,
by the people", and we are the only ones who can claim this honor.
Let's all get together, and honor those with a dream.

| 22 | Re: ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS: I also have a serious and aggressive interest in debunking that brown-nosing chump Vic Anderson. His decisions have nothing to do with environmental concerns. His only agenda is personal gain and justification for his own job. Hey, if he didn't keep you from building docks and fences, opening perfectly healthy and beautiful plugged canals--that he ordered to be plugged with tons of construction debris and concrete--he would be redundant. Dumping concrete and rebar into pristine wetlands is illegal and damaging to the environment but it's perfectly legal for Vic Anderson--not for you. Even if your conforming dock was approved by all the other departments, you can be sure Vic will put a cabosh on it. I'm ready to go to the Miami Herald. I'm ready to go to Fish and Wildlife. Are there any attorneys out there who can help? Consider this. The canals already exist. Rip rap and docks already exist. Why are you being prevented from building and using something that others already have? How is adding another dock to an already disturbed canal shoreline cluttered with existing docks going to further degrade the shoreline? If you have any ideas, let's put our brains together. | |||
| 22 |
To
the person who has had a problem with the Army Corp of
Engineers. You
are not the only one. Vic Anderson is a dictator running a private
kingdom in a so-called free country. He has way too much power,
i.e., he is the only one standing opposed to the opening of the
plugged canals in Big Pine. His reason? He had a personality
conflict with the developer who originally dug the canals and said
they would be open, over his
dead body. This is not the
kind of impartial direction we deserve from our government
officials. Unfortunately Vic Anderson is not voted in or out of his
position. He is a dictator for life.
But, as you, and many others have seen, he abuses his power and has
private agendas. You weren't clear what your issue is with the Army
Corp of Engineers but there are several major issues that have been
in and out of court, but Vic's power always wins. We need to find a
way to go over Vic's head and, better yet, get him removed and
replaced with someone who really cares about the people he is
supposed to serve. Give us more details on your issue, and if
anyone else is interested in standing up to this guy, please post.
Especially if you're a lawyer looking for a challenge.

If it's about my Dear old friend Rob French, all I will say is I've known him a VERY long time and was privileged to know him in ways unknown to others and the last thing I would do is scandalize his name. My only thought was to awaken others (the Big Pine drug addict population!) and help stop the waste of lives. Re: Flu shot shortage. Paranoia soon will destroy ya, baby. Fact: Flu shots are nothing more than medical cash-cows. The flu virus has so many different strains that one vaccine couldn't possible cover all the types we come into contact with. Do you really think it works? Fact: Best way to avoid the Bug is to wash your hands and avoid touching your mouth & nose. I personally carry a small bottle of alcohol with me when out in public places to use immediately after touching doors, shopping carts, other hands, money etc. Now, as for the candidates using this as fire fuel, how pitiful can our leaders get? I mean, really! |

Fishcutters. Very good. We had the crab chowder which was thick,
full of stuff and full of flavor. As I write this I’m thinking, I
should have had three bowls of the chowder and come back again to try
the other things, it was so good. It was like going to a fancy restaurant for fancy food right here in a simple Ramrod Key fish house. The cooks really have their stuff together. They really know fancy food and how important quality ingredients are. This is no amateur operation. And, oh, yes, they have free draft beer! |

| To the person who thinks the poem meant anything to do with Rob French, you are sadly mistaken. We have known the French family for 34 years; and how dare you say it was drugs. Long live the Gang Plank. (a long defunct bar where the House of Music is now.) | ||||
| Wednesday October 20 2004 |
I had the pleasure of knowing Rob French
for 30 years. I had seen him rather recently. There is no way Rob

complications are common with diabetes.
Rob hadn't really felt great for the last several years. He did not
do drugs. That's the truth.

To the person who wrote to the "Big Pine Drug Addict"
on the 19th. How dare you spread nasty rumors about Rob French's
cause of death. Are you our new county coroner. Or maybe you process
death certificates and his stated cause of death - Crack Overdose.
Life did NOT overrun him. He had a very successful Property
Appraisal business in Key West right up to the day he died. He was
in no way a horrible waste. You on the other hand, and I can
guarantee everyone who knew him will agree, should consider maybe
re-evaluating your sorry life. Just remember- Karma- this will come
back to bit you in the ass someday.

RE: FLU SHOT SHORTAGE:
I find it appalling and unbelievable that there has been no mention
of the shortage of flu vaccine on the BPK site! This is an issue
that affects everyone and yet, it is apparently more important to
sound off about the Winn Dixie parking lot, iguanas eating your
plants, or which restaurant has better food.
I am really getting so tired of the petty complaints coming out of
peoples mouths. Thank
goodness there are still some individuals who attempt to raise the
social consciousness of the BPK readers.
When the flu begins to hit the Keys, you can count on that
happening, and our hospitals begin to fill up with the elderly who
can't fight off the infection and individuals begin to die, I,
for one don't want to hear any complaints.
This shortage is a situation that NEVER should have occurred in this
wonderful country of ours.
Hopefully, the next time I check in to this site, I will read some
feedback on this problem.
Remember to VOTE SO THIS TERRIBLE PROBLEM WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN NEXT
YEAR!

| 20 | About health insurance. I live on Big Pine and commute to Key West to work in a government job in order to have health insurance. Believe me I don't do it for the money. Insurance was out of our reach otherwise. Being self employed my husband could not afford to have insurance and with a recent surgery ($50,000) I'd work for free just to have the insurance. What a shame all Americans aren't covered because it does make a difference in the quality and availability of care. Contrary to what most people think hospitals and doctors are not required to treat you anyway. | |||

To The "Big

not only sad, but also incomplete. You

the part at the end where you die a cruel and probably untimely
death. Ask the many former friends of one ROB FRENCH . 3rd
Generation Piner when I arrived there, many years a successful
businessman, husband
and loved by all. Divorce moved him to Key West

horrible waste of humanity on a long list you will probably added to

Mind that you haven't, but were pretty sure, or think you will, so therefore we should arrest you. Does that sound good to you?
| 19 | MEN IN BLACK: To you uninitiated one. Bush's war is not about terrorism being perpetrated upon us, it is about a grand accounting that is coming on us all. I am trying to make the point that our government is presently and has been working for a long time to come to the invasion of our personal lives and finances, medical records, and anything else implied in the constitution of the United States of America regarding our right to be safe and secure in our papers and personal effects. You plead my case nicely, as we are playing right into the hands of those individuals that would enslave us into the NEW WORLD ORDER. As history repeats itself the banks control government. Enjoy your new found life, and it's tighter and tighter restrictions on personal freedom. It doesn't really matter who you vote for, ultimately U.N. troops will eventually occupy U.S. territory just as soon as the job of balling up the Constitution and Bill of Rights and tossing it into the trash has been completed. | |||

To the person with
migraines. I have sympathy for them. I also went thru that.
Man, that is as close to Him as I ever want to get. I went thru the,
"here take this, take that, give yourself a shot", and bal blah blah.
I finally had a good day and I went to the doctor and told them I didn't need any more drugs to throw up. They talked to a neurologist and he put me on Elavil/Nortryptaline daily and I haven't had a migraine since and that has been several years now. Thank God. At first, about (three weeks) you are kind of out of it, but that passes and then you won't feel the Elavil any more, but it will be working. I wish you the best and I would mention this to your doctor. My regular doctor did not know about this treatment but the neurologist did.. So try a neurologist if your doctor doesn't have a clue. By the by, they cost about $20.00 a month. I would have paid five times that not to have a migraine. Good luck and God Bless. I will pray for you. |

To the migraine sufferer:
I find that inhaling peppermint essential oil and/or lavendar

works well. Inhale slowly and deeply. You can use either oil by
itself or mix the two, but be really careful not to get either of
them in your eyes! Also, I found this information on the web:

Hope one of these works for you.

It is not a rip off store, if you go to Publix or Albertsons you will see that a lot of their products are either just as expensive or more so. Publix and Albertsons have the same little store member cards just like Winn Dixie and if you didn't have them then you don't get the sale price. And I stand with my comment about the complainers. I have lived in this town a long time and believe me their are more good comments going on then complaints. Most people have the common courtesy to know when people are trying to make things better not to try to cut them down.

| 17 | Re: MEN IN BLACK. Apparently, you misunderstood my post. If you believe all your messages are intercepted and compiled so "they can take you away", then the security software sitting on the editor's mail server would do you no good. If someone wanted to capture the contents of your e-mails, they would be monitoring your computer and not the editor's server. However, if you think you are above accountability and impervious to consequences, then you're naive. I've already said that the "incident" is public record. What constitutes libel or slander is the malicious intent to defame and injure an individual's reputation (as in business) or otherwise expose him to public contempt. Libel is in the form of written or printed words, specifically a false published statement. Ah, but you say it isn't false. But it is if you're suggesting guilt, intent or making unproven accusations. Yes, you can be sued if the statement was made with actual malice and with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not. Stop this insidious evil now. | |||
| 17 | Re MEN IN BLACK. Of course, me silly? What is really silly is the lack of demarcation in your view of behavior. Where does "approved" behavior end and socially unacceptable behavior begin? And at what point does it become a public nuisance? Hey, keep doing it if you think you can't get caught. Ruining someone's reputation is OK, eh?? As long as it isn't yours. Mug shots are OK too, right? Consider this. You're a hard-working local guy trying to make ends meet in a high cost, tourist-based economy, trying to make your business succeed amidst grueling competition, trying to rebuild a life and go on, despite past setbacks. You've paid a high price for those past mistakes and you're relentless in your resolve to do right. And now you see your mug shot along with some really nasty personal remarks... plastered on this site. As you contemplate the potential consequences, you realize the gravity of your loss. Reform your liberal, isolationist, drug and alcohol saturated and Keys diseased brain because you will not survive here. Haven't you noticed from your shack on a stick in the woods that the demographics, as well as the attitudes here are changing? | |||

The next time drug companies tell you that drugs

Water park! We have the best water park in the world, it's called the ocean. Amen, sistah. Grab a canoe or a snorkel and go exploring. |

John Edwards hit it right. Stem cell research can save lives and cure diseases. Bush is too backwards and ignorant to understand stem cell. If Bush or his daughters suffered a spinal injury the money would pour in to stem cell research. We are no longer living in the dark ages.

19 year old Rebellious
one: I was astounded by your eloquent use of words. Undoubtedly your
friends In Iraq think they are doing the right thing and they will be
changed forever. The consequences of there choices. War is not sterile
like we see in the media. I don't think watching children die would be my cup of tea either. If Bush were convinced he was doing the right thing I would think the Bush children, perhaps the twins would be leading the pack, taking point, with their machine guns. Then the Bushmeister could feel free to continue with his verbal diarrhea about bringing democracy to the world. Not gonna happen, not gonna do it. How is it you can think this through for yourself and not buy into his rhetoric? Did you slip through the floorboard cracks on the deck of INDOCTRINATION? IMAGINE. Thoughts and choices to call your own. Carry on. |

19 year old who says he supports our troops. Thank
you. Now
want to really help?
I am starting to send boxes to Iraq again. I did it last year

need junk food (anything but chocolate), candy,
Christmas decorations for small areas.
Bug spray, batteries, games and anything that makes you
remember that you are an American.
Gather some things together and bring them to the Flea
Market. Just ask in the
front who sends to the soldiers and they will direct you to me.
You say you support them, now show it please.

| 15 | To those continually slandering John Ward. Cease now. What you post is public knowledge and a closed case. Regurgitating the same old sh**t seeks only to destroy lives and reputations. Fishcutters obvious success is attributed to the owners' talent, foresight and ability to simplify the logistics. Result... Excellent food. Reasonable prices. Sadly, you fail to consider the potential consequences should the anonymity of your e-mails fail? Ignorance is bliss, right? Don't think that's possible, eh, chumps? Consider this. Software gurus have developed intelligent spyware--insidious programs that hijack your downloads and hide on your computer, changing registry settings, monitoring internet activity and uploading address books and IP addresses back to daddy. They have the ability to capture keystrokes as passwords and e-mails are being typed. How do you think that Viagra spam got into your inbox? Oooo... I can imagine the surprise on your sorry faces when lawyers come a knockin'. Or did you not know, you can be sued for slander? | |
| 15 | To the Winn Dixie employee with the smart idea. If all the customers who complained went somewhere else there would be no customers left to shop at your rip off store. You should go somewhere else so you can see how a real super market is run properly. | |

I'm the 19 year old punk that doesn't feel like giving my life up for some oil. How bout this, Stop getting on me about it. Like I said, if your so damn gun-ho about this war. YOU GO! I support the troops we have in Iraq, as a matter of fact I have many friends over there in Iraq, and I thank them every chance I get. My Grandfather served in the Navy for years, my other grandfather served in the Marines. So you can keep talking all your trash about how much of a "punk" I am, but when push comes to shove, I'll bet you don't have plans to go to Iraq anytime soon....CHUMP. Would you call your children punks for not wanting to go to war over something they don't support? Isn't that what the 60's were about? Isn't that were all the deadbeat hippies came into play? They didn't want to go to war anymore because so many people were dying. So tonight as you tuck your kids into bed and give them kisses and wish them sweet dreams, ask them if they would like to go fight for oil and a "punk" President. When they say, "no mommy, no daddy I don't want to go to war" tell them that they are punks. Just for the record. Girls in Canada are 10 times better looking. I hope when you read this it makes you very, very mad and you spend you whole day thinking about me. I know you will.....chump.

Oleander is a very toxic
plant, if ingested by deer or children. About 15 years ago the
necropsy of a motherless fawn showed that the cause of death was
oleander poisoning. Deer, bears, and probably other animals learn
what's good to eat from the smell of the plants on the mother's
breath. It was surmised that without its mother it made a fatal
mistake. That being said,I doubt that oleander poisoning of deer
occurs very frequently, but would check with Fish & Wildlife to see
if it's a problem. I would suggest going with native plants, but you
probably are looking for something colorful, and our natives are
mostly just green.

I've been told that deer will eat different things in different
neighborhoods, so it's an ongoing guessing game. I haven't had any

Anytime one of our locals gets
arrested I do think it should be posted. That is called public
humiliation. When someone
posts slanderous remarks or accusations about others, that's where
we learn the details. So for
the people trying to defend John Ward
I just figured that he had a bad nite with his wife
until someone else started slinging mud at everyone.
All the sherrriffs office crime photos are a true fact not
gossip. If you are there,

Ok,
I stand corrected. It wasn't three years ago that John was arrested.
Seemed like a whole lot longer than one year. I guess because I
don't dwell over other peoples lives because I'm too busy with mine.
Do know John personally? Have you ever dealt with him? Are you just
jumping on the Big Pine
bandwagon? Let's have a show
of hands of all the people that have actually dealt, or know Mr.
Ward. If you don't know him

digs your dirt up too. Remember,
everything comes back on you 10 fold.

We have all this water and no

some of those rich people that we have here can build us one here in
Big Pine at the blue hole. There is a lot of space there.
If It can be use for the whales it can be use also for our
kids. And it will give the
teens something to do. Maybe
if we ask the key deer permision I am sure that they will accept.
After all it is
because of us Big Pinners that they are all alive everytime we plant
some thing they all spread the word and they all come for supper.

| 14 | To everyone who has a problem with Winn Dixie. It is not the employees fault what is going on there. So when you go to the store have patience with them, they are just as frustrated as you are with all of the change and trying to get used to it themselves. Personally I think it is looking much better. If you are one of those people that just are not happy with anything at the store, then drive north or south or order your groceries online and save everyone the aggravation of your complaints. | |

| 13 | So here's the question that apparently goes unasked of all the Democrats who are sure it is President Bush who lacks intelligence: What would Zarqawi be doing now if he were not slaughtering people in Iraq? Selling used cars in Amman? Playing cello in the Berlin Philharmonic? The president has said from the beginning that a major reason for invading Iraq was to bring the war to the terrorists, and that if we don't fight them on their soil we will have to fight them on ours. Therefore, unless one posits that Zarqawi and other Arab sadists would be doing nice things elsewhere, their presence in Iraq seems to vindicate the president entirely -- that they would be busy in the West if they were not kept busy defending their very lives in Iraq. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/dennisprager/dp20041012.shtml | |
| 13 | The drug users are the good guys in my book. They’re only hurting themselves and are quiet neighbors even if they do stay up all night long. All I did was buy a piece of Big Pine real estate which has ruined my life. Winn Dixie isn’t the only one doing Bait & Switch. It was like I was gang-raped by every person involved in my real estate transaction. If you’re from out-of-town and are thinking of buying a piece of paradise use a VERY reputable, very busy realtor. Preferably a man. You will also want to bring along an attorney (man) to your closing. Half of the Big Piner broads are over-weight, starving realtors who pass vicious and untrue gossip. When they get their prey (you) they rip you to shreds because it’s only about extracting money from their one deal of the year. If you don't believe me, try to find available real estate attorneys. They are all really busy pursuing the unethical "business" people. Buyer beware. | |
| 13 | Kudos to the 14 year old who has lived on Big Pine their whole life. Did you know that there are still the same amount of Key Deer on this island since I have lived here and that's about 15 years. Same amount of deer no more no less. The only thing that has increased are environmentalists inventing jobs for themselves to save the deer eagarly raking in our hard earned tax dollars while you kids suffer. | |
| 13 |
More deer now: What a bunch of selfish clap-trap. The writer was wrong. There are more deer now than there were 15 years ago by about 500. He seems to want environmentalist to cease and desist so he can build his very own Miami and get rich at the cost of our way of life. |
|
| 13 | With five thousand Big Piners why don't we have a YMCA? This way the kids could have summer camps, basketball and swimming, etc. and the parents could have a gym and exercise classes. I love the YMCA & wonder what it takes to get one in our beautiful city. The teenager is right - there is only Watson Field and nothing else. Mine were busy in Scouts and Sports. Kudos to the Big Pine kids who are not fatties like the poor Marathon kids. | |

There are lots of worthy people in Big Pine that qualify but Steve's

I'm 14 and have lived on Big Pine my whole life and have felt the full impact how there is NOTHING ON BIG PINE for the teens to do. I mean the county spends more money on the key deer then making a teen center on Big Pine for the 100+ teens who live on the island. I think the county should stop worrying about the deer and spending money on them and start doing something for the teens that have to grow up around them.

Why don't you all identify yourself so we can check the skeletons that you have hiding in your closets? Don't we all have things in our past that are better left in the past? We live in such an amazing place here. Go out and enjoy the beauty of this place instead of thinking about ways to ruin peoples lives. We don't need your kind here. Find another place to live where your kind is appreciated. It's not here.

| 11 | To all of you that have nothing better to do than rag on people that live here. Please find another past time. That girl that works at the ice cream parlor I happen to have known since she was a little girl. Yes, living here on Big Pine Key. Longer, probably that most of you. She's a good kid and a great student. I don't see anybody mentioning anything about her sitting there doing her homework when she has nothing else to do. Well she does that. Give her credit. | |
| 11 | SPEEDING IN NEIGHBORHOODS IS INSANE. I do around 15-30 mph in neighborhoods. When I see people walking, I slow down to 5-8 mph and go to the opposite side of the road. When you see people walking dogs, do the same. Dog are like children, they are very very unpredictable. So would that extra 30 seconds be worth a life? I'm not saying I don't drive fast, I do in fact. There is a time and place for speed...and its not in neighborhoods when people are walking around. | |

| 11 | I'm the 19 year old that's "making threats" of going to Canada if Bush is elected. I'm not too keen on getting killed for oil and profit of the rich. If you're so gun-ho about this war...sign up! America needs you. Wait, I've got a better idea, send your children over there, That way there will be one less stupid person here. Come hell or high water I'm not going. Let's talk about patriotism for a second here, hmm lets see, Our government does not care one bit about us. They tax us all to death, and send 1,000 troops to their deaths, over what? Weapons of Mass Destruction. Nope. There are none. Oil? Yup. Yet, I'm still paying $2.10 for gas. So, please tell me why I should do anything for my country? Another thing I find pretty funny, I caught some of the debates after work the other night. Everyone that called supporting Bush stammered and stuttered more than him. | |

Oh,
I was under the impression that we on Big Pine had class.
I guess I was wrong when the best we can think of to talk about is
who gets arrested and for what,
which isn't that bad,
until you start putting pictures up.
Carl Brandt is a tragedy no matter how you look at
it. John Ward: Those

you would be pointing them at his wife.

SLOW
DOWN in Eden Pines and all of our Big Pine Neighborhoods!
This is the second time I have mentioned Palm Avenue and try to avoid
that street so I can live to see 100. There are many many arrests for
reckless driving down here and I am so amazed to see people driving 50
+ mph while I am taking a walk in our 25 mph neighborhood. One of our
neighbors got hit this year and passed away because of vehicular
manslaughter who has not yet been caught. We need a task force,
neighborhood watch and more Officers patrolling. There was a drunken
prowler in my yard early this morning and I am going to protect myself
& family, my property and my animals with continued surveillance and
vigilance. Will a paintball gun or some pepper spray get the bad guys
attention? What else besides a GUN could protect ourselves
while in our homes and walking down our streets? Is it legal to throw
a rock at a speeding car so no more people, deer and pets get murdered
by speeders? Going to get a big fence and a .357 for the home
invader. Don't mess with Big Piners. |

Speed bumps are inconvenient, but effective, and a
lot less trouble than a thrown rock. Now for home invasions; I
wouldn't argue with your ideas, but consult the cops about where the
invader has to be to be legally shot. Some states insist he be
inside your home. Texas has cleared people who chased one down in
the street to shoot him after the break-in,
but then "Texas is a whole 'nother country."

Lead guitar:

I
live in Eden pines and this past Wednesday evening around 5 o'clock
while walking up Palm Ave.,
I came upon a beautiful dead cat that someone had hit with a
car. I laid it to the side of the road and seen that it had died I
asked people in the area if they knew who's cat it was. I faxed US-1
radio on Big Pine,
but they never put it on. The
rude lady that answered the phone Thursday said why would you want
to put a dead cat on the radio? I told her I was concerned that it
was some ones pet. Well,
after many signs thru the neighborhood the poor beautiful cat lays
to rot. |

I agree this should be the

Those of us that have lived here long
enough don't see the "stairway to heaven" as a
landmark. A piece of unfinished business isn't a landmark, it's a
landmine. You want to talk about landmarks, we actually have had a
few of those here on Big Pine Key. Look hard enough and you will
find them. They are things with history behind them. One of my old
favorites was so badly damaged by hurricane Georges that it's only
half standing. It's history was from Harry Truman playing poker
there in the 40's. and then later it was an unbelieveable party
house with lots of unbelieveable memories held by many long time
locals. And huge spiders on the old banana trees out back. We called
them banana spiders. They are actually giant orb spiders that
haven't been seen there since hurricane Georges. That was a
landmark. Get over tearing down shoddily built steps.

this problem, if I am perhaps you have a suggestion as to how to
eliminate it. (Ed: I tried two machines and there's no blurry background. Try restarting your computer or hit the F5 key to refresh the current screen. If that doesn't work I think that your video card might need to have it's drivers updated. That's a start. I hope it helps.) |

There's an enormous and troubling disconnect between the situation on the ground in Iraq and the portrait of disaster hawked by Kerry & Co. — abetted by the media. The victims of this disinformation campaign are our soldiers, the American people and the law-abiding citizens of Iraq. How on earth have we sunk so low that a man who would be president is willing to undercut those in uniform, while encouraging our enemies to believe — against all evidence — that they're winning? The owners are courteous and I've never witnessed any harsh behavior toward employees. To all you dufasses bashing this excellent restaurant and seafood market combination, take your lard butts to Boondocks or Conch and Stein. But be sure to request they whack off the cod fat from your "grouper samich". And also, that tiresome skinny filet they pass off as snapper has a distinct resemblance to tilapia. America needs your vote.
America needs your money, not your vote. "An election is an
advance sale on stolen property."
Do not miss your chance to make a difference.
By voting you signify that you approve of the process by
taking part in it. By abstaining from the presidential vote
signifies you do not approve of the
process. Your vote makes
not one iota of difference to the Electoral College unless there is
a tie. Read the Constitution to see how ties are handled. Hint:
It's not your vote!
Your vote is very important in this
close Presidential Election.
Adding in the Florida "graveyard" vote and subtracting the
overseas military (lacked postmarks in the past election) makes a
huge difference. Otherwise
your vote is very unimportant. I will be at the polls only for the
local decisions. Were it not for these I would not wasting my
valuable time. It would be better spent organizing my sock drawer.

Two weeks ago, I got the oyster basket, and the few oysters I got were very small...mostly breading. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and just brushed it off as low inventory due to hurricane evacuation. This week I ordered the full order of seafood marinara, and it was much smaller than in the past. I even asked the waitress to make sure she didn't give me the half order and she said no. Rob, I hope you are reading this, and will take note that us locals do notice things like this. Please don't disappoint us again. |
| 4 | Restaurant Review: Fishgutters. The food is OK. Staff is nice. John and Dawn Ward are very rude to their employees and their fisherman. They need to learn how to treat people. |
| 4 | Dear Restaurant Reviewer: Quit thinking you are a Gourmet Taster. Stay home and review your own food. Keep the sour puss comments to yourself. Coco's are hard working people who give you fine food for your meager budget. You are so unappreciative. |

| 4 | I have not hesitated to drive to Key West or Marathon to shop for groceries over the last few years because of the disarray, unreliability of products, rotten veggies, long lines, etc. at Winn-Dick-Me here on BPK, but I had no choice on Friday and was pleasantly surprised at the new changes. Cleaning it up and bringing it up to the 21st century. Now, let's see if they remember to stock up because Fantasy Fest is coming and there will be tons of people shopping. Let's see whether price gouging occurs then as well. I'm hopeful now... |

FYI:
For those of you that couldn't
make it to Key West to see the fantastic movie, Fahrenheit
911, it will be available on DVD on Tues. 10-5. A must
see! If you have any question who the best man
to run this country is prior
to watching this movie, it will be clear as a bell after you see it.

Tussa revisited: To the person who stated
that if you don't have anything good to say about anyone, (Tussa,
Dave Allen, etc,) don't said anything. I guess that person has not
had Tussa ringing his door bell at 3AM with a lame story for
"borrowing" money. I have, and I have nothing good to say about
him. He belongs in jail.

As I recall an article in the Citizen several months back, the Stairway to Heaven was built by a young architect and his wife just after they graduated from college as sort of a dream project. Twenty years later they are divorced. The architect, still in business on the mainland, and his new wife have no interest in completing the project. In exchange for forgiveness of about $100,000 worth of fines and back taxes, he gave it to the county. The county has considered it a hazard, especially for kids - more so that the usual construction site because those stairs go up pretty high with no guard rails. The county is going to tear it down and I seem to remember something about turning the site into a park. |

Hiccup
Cure: When my oldest daughter was born, she was also
cursed with those horrible hiccups and her grandmother told me to
mix 1 teaspoon of Caro syrup to a 4 ounce bottle of warm water. Now
I assume that would be an infant dosage maybe you could try a larger
dose. It did work for her. Good Luck.

| 3 | Restaurant Review: I love Fishcutters on Summerland Key. The food is amazing and the people are so friendly there. It is a 100% improvement of Monte's and a great replacement. It's about time we had a top quality fresh seafood restaurant in the area again. I heard they are having a stone crab festival there October 17th. Sound like its going to be a great locals party. I hope to see everyone there. |

Restaurant Review: I think the Big Pine House of
Music is great. The food is very good and delivery is so quick.
Keep up the good work. I
cant wait for Coco's to open back up.
The rest of the restaurants on Big Pine have
been very disappointing lately. Food and service quality are WAY
down. You would think that in a slow time like this restaurants
would be a little nicer and appreciative to locals that are
supporting them right now.

Restaurant
Review: Can't wait for Coco's to open
back up? Why do you like
looking at sour pusses all the time? Talk about unappreciative!
Would it kill Coco to actually smile at a customer?
Those women are so nasty there and the food stinks.

| 3 noon | Restaurant Review: I cant wait for The Cracked Egg to Re-open. I hope they enjoy a well earned break, but I sure do miss my breakfast. Even though I like The Coffee shop for dinner NOBODY touches The Cracked Egg when it comes to breakfast. |

Go Kerry!
Funny head and all.
He's our only hope for this country.
No More Bush!

Anyone feel like they are in the
twilight zone.
First we get 4 hurricanes.( I am thankful they didn't hit the keys).
Next the 2 big stores (Eckards
& Winn Dixie) completely change everything. Can you find
anything? Next the channels
are all different on cable.
Some are even missing.
What's next?
