The flea market on Big Pine has gotten totally out of control; it draws nothing but rude and obnoxious people. They go into a frenzy to buy nothing. I've watched it for the last 7 years, up close and personal having worked on Saturdays in the buildings around it. If it wasn't for the few close friends that I have working there, that need the money, it should be shut down. Some locals like the produce. Does anyone care to comment on the tax exemption of the owner or is that not true?

I’m leery of everything involving a republican government because in the late sixties we caught a government plant at one of our anti-Nixion meetings who was trying to constantly disrupt our proceedings. Beware of your government.

28

Talk about brainwashed. Why do the Amish kids stay on the farm when they surely must be coveting Nintendo, Dell and BMW. “...how you gonna’ keep ‘em down on the farm, when they’ve seen ol’ gay Pariee?” The Amish are a cult. How come there aren't "cult busters" out there trying to rescue the inmates?

Far be it from me to begrudge those less fortunate, however, it galls me every time I drive past our new Habitat Landing and see all of the nice shiny, new vehicles.  Both adults in my household work hard (a total of 3 jobs) and I doubt I will ever be able to afford what our less fortunate citizens can enjoy.  And this morning I overheard a conversation of one of the new owners complaining that they are not allowed to park their boats under the house.  How sad for them.  And our terrible unjust government won't let them use the land that was set aside for a park as a boat storage.  I just couldn't believe it!!!
28 Bush is responsible for signing foreign trade agreements as well as blowing the door off the hinges at the Mexican border. Limiting foreign trade or taxing such is the right thing to do. Not Bush! Gas is $2 per gallon. Cubans have taken over south Florida. Illegals use more teachers, get free school lunch, food stamps, free medical. Illegals work under the table- pay no taxes, take American jobs. Domino effect. Now Medicaid is cut 1.5 billion, leaving elderly sick Americans without meds- yet Bush sent 10 billion to Iraq! Bush= loser, at OUR expense.

The school board of Key West shouldn’t be allowed to select their superintendent because they’re just five bubbas sitting around and will select whoever toddies to them. All superintendents of schools should be elected.

No other president has ever had a direct attack on American soil by other than an American and if you check the records, the jobs lost were a direct reflection of those attacks. Why not ask the businesses that abruptly stopped the work why they let it happen?
Why not ask those same businesses why they sent and are still sending American high tech jobs to other countries... I don't agree with everything President Bush has done but he is not totally responsible for all that ails America.

In case any of you think of Japans attack on Pearl Harbor, don't, Hawaii was not a state at the time.
27
If Democrats are synonymous with Democracy, are Republicans synonymous with...Republic of China?

When they repave Key Deer Blvd everyone will want to go faster on such a nice smooth straightaway. As it is now, the bumps alone keep our speed down to 35.

No other president has put 2.2 MILLION American's out of work. No other administration has overlooked the price of gas exceeding $2.00 per gallon... that's all Bush! Puke!

What is a republican's best quality?  The ability to justify everything to his own purpose.  Amazing how republicans can do no wrong!!
26

Where does the extra money go when our local elected officials don’t spend it on their election campaign? Do they keep it? If an incumbent commissioner raises $35,000 and is un-opposed in his bid for re-election; he’d probably spend just a few thousand of it, wouldn’t he, just to look good. So, where’s the rest of the money go? I see this happening frequently in local elections.

What is the difference between the White House and the Capitol Building? I thought they were one and the same. I know they’re both white.

Ash Wednesday. Catholics get ashes from burnt palm fronds placed on their foreheads today.

Have you heard about the latest bumper sticker in New York?  It says "Run, Hillary, Run."  Democrats put the sticker on the rear bumper.  Republicans put it on the front bumper.

Bush far from worst President in History.

Liberals claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war.  They complain about his prosecution of it.  One liberal recently claimed Bush was the worst president in U.S. history.

Let's clear up one point:  We didn't start the war on terror.  Try to remember, it was started by terrorist BEFORE 9/11.
Let's look at the "worst" president and mismanagement claims.
FDR led us into World War II.  Germany never attacked us Japan did.  From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.
Truman finished that war and started on in Korea, North Korea never attacked us.  From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.
John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.  Vietnam never attacked us.
Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.  From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.
Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never attacked us.  He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing.  Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.
In the two years since terrorist attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Lybia, Iran, and North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.  We lost 600 soldiers, an average of 300 per year.  Bush did all this abroad while not allowing another terrorist attack at home.
Worst President in history?  Come On!
By the way, for those who haven't studied these facts in the public school systems, all these other guys were Democrats.

My family and I had the opportunity to eat at No Name Pub a few weeks back. We had heard so much about it. Boy what a let down. This was some of the worst pizza I have ever had. The crust was soggy and the cheese was full of grease.
There was a comment about Pizza Works and how the quality was based on who was cooking. I love how the place was cleaned up, but I agree about the inconsistency comment. Still need to keep the staff from smoking in the kitchen area.
 Big Pine Cafe. Love it!
 Cracked Egg. Rude
Robs. Like the home style cooking and low prices.
KD's.. Have heard too many rumors about what the menu says and what you are actually getting. Not that they are using anything they shouldn't, but rather listing one level of quality and giving you another.
24

Is Ralph Nadar trying to loose the Election for the Democrats again? He surely did it the last time. This country shouldn’t have too many political parties because they all erode each other’s base. That’s why the third world’s elections never have a clear winner because they have too many parties.

24 If you had bought $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now
be worth $49.00. With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original
$1,000.00. With Worldcom, you would have less than $5.00 left.
If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one
year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the 10 cent
deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above information, my current
investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle. This is my new retirement
program. I call it my 401Keg plan

How come in the manger scenes at Christmastime the figures are dressed like Afghanis?

23

One of my biggest fears is that they’ll knock-off Bush and we’ll have Dick Chaney for our president—a chilling thought.
Kerry doesn't seem much better, just another double-talking insider.

There are three religious truths:
1. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
2. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian faith.
3. Baptists do not recognize each other in the liquor store or at Hooters.

An example of the fine and fare politics at work in Monroe County is Sea Camp. As difficult as it is for the rest of us to get building permits for new construction, Sea Camp seems to have been able to impress the building department to such a degree they ignore the two ugly cesspits that are currently in use on that property. While Sea Camp continues to expand their facility under the guise of environmentally concerned, children and community oriented marine conservationists, educators and enthusiasts, their excrement infested cesspits continue to leach raw sewage into the water table unchecked. Cesspits are illegal. They pollute. To get a building permit, the rest of us must get a cesspit credit first. In other words, we fund the replacement of someone else's cesspit with a state of the art, environmentally sound system. And then, when we finally get to build, we fund our own with same. Little is known exactly what goes on at Sea Camp behind their gates. Few if any are allowed to venture there, and for good reason. I'll say no more...

More on the big pine restaurant debate. The only pizza worth anything here on Big Pine Key is Big Pine Pizza. Home made crust . Very consistent food, at least every time I get food from there, it's consistent. No Name has been living on it's reputation from 20 years ago when it was the ONLY Pizza place here on Big Pine.  Pizzaworks can be very good or very bad, depends on who's cooking. How about Big Pine Restaurant's ribs? They're great. Conch and Stein. Slow and I have a problem when somebody says slow rotated prime rib and you get a rib eye steak cooked under a broiler. To me that's a steak not a piece of prime rib. I'm not impressed with Robs either. Nothing I can't do at home way cheaper and quieter.
22
comment to feb. 11 regarding Square Grouper... The owners (Doug and Lynn Bell) have lived here forever and worked hard for years. Doug has the only electrical business worth anything here in the middle keys and has developed a great, hard and honestly earned reputation by sweating his butt off. Please don't start any unfounded rumors. Maybe the name was to remind us of those free spirited days when square groupers were something everybody looked for but very few ever found? I know the mane brought up fond memories of trudging through the muddy flats and getting stuck in the mud.
22
A response to the person that commented about the "Olde Road Cafe" on the 19th. You claiming to know what all the locals feel about a restaurant... How long have you lived here to claim yourself a local. 3 months, one year? Please don't go off spouting about what the locals think here in the Keys because truthfully, if you put two locals here together in a room, you would probably get three different opinions on any given matter. This is one of the wonderful things about the Keys. The one consistency with long term locals is that everybody's opinion is different. You know so much about the Keys that you don't even know the name of a restaurant that has been in operation for years. Even though long term residents call every establishment by the previous name, that doesn't mean we don't know what the current name of every establishment is.
22
I agree with the person talking about the ugly greasy spoon restaurants we have around here, but I have to say that I'm seeing a new change coming.  I have seen a wonderful change in the Big Pine Coffee Shop (by the post office), since the new owners took over a couple of years ago.  Wonderful food, reasonable prices...they offer sweet potatoes as one of the potato choices in the evenings and have FAT FREE dressings for salads, which seems to be impossible to get in most restaurants.

I find The Square Grouper to be excellent too, and I have just recently tried Rob's several times and have been very satisfied every time, other than the acoustics are lousy.  I've heard the new Parrotdise (probably spelled it wrong...formerly the Sand Bar) is also excellent but haven't tried yet...pitiful name choice, though.

Coco's Kitchen is still one of the best...consistently good food, very reasonable prices.  Coco rocks!

All of these restaurants are very clean...at least, so far.  Let's hope the rest of the restaurants take note and follow their examples.  Some of the restaurants you mentioned I will not step foot in because of the filth.

A correction to the info on Bill the Plumber.  It was Joe the Plumber who died recently.  Bill the Plumber moved out of the Keys about a year ago to be closer to family.  We miss him (and Joe, too).
21 Years ago, No Name Pub had a reputation for great pizza with relatively successful attempts at gourmet and specialty pizzas as well. However, the operative word here is "had". Just as Pizza Works, Robs, the former KD's, Boondocks and so many of the local establishments so indiscriminately mentioned in this forum, No Name Pub too has joined the ranks of the ugly greasy spoon and the dreadfully dreary sports bar, serving up lousy food unfit to eat for painfully high prices. The old dollar bills hanging off the ceilings and walls are, well--old and do no more than add to the ubiquitous kitsch and the tacky hoi polloi that seems to prevail in Big Pine eateries.
21 Now lets talk about the Olde Road Cafe, the only restaurant I've ever known to succeed purely on the whims of the owners. Yes, they're open only during tourist and snowbird season, and only three nights a week. However, their food is consistently excellent, the portions are generous but not overpowering with an emphasis on a wide variety of well seasoned fresh vegetables and fresh local fish. The faire communicates it's creators' love of culinary excellence and presentation. But having to wait for the dreaded hoards to arrive, and then competing with them for space on US1 somehow diminishes whatever pleasure could be derived from a potentially wonderful experience.

To the non bible thumper, I agree that children need better examples of how to conduct themselves.  But, the majority of children are brought up by heterosexual parents (if they are lucky to have two of them together) and there is a significant amount of heterosexuals raising children that are VERY bad examples.  Whether you want to admit it or not, homosexuality is not a choice, and children of the world need to be taught love not hate. Your parents "era" of growing up was different from yours, as your children's will be different from yours and so on.  Remember that were not asking YOU to get married to a homosexual, we just want the option.  And, this does equate to civil rights, if you feel it isn't, then you are more prejudice than you realize.  How is this different from Rosa Parks not being able to sit in the front of the bus?
20 I think all this controversy about gay marriage and adoption has only brought more homophobes out of the closet.
20 Back to the Pizza discussion.  So what's up with No Name Pub's pizza?  It seems every time I go  there and order a pizza my pizza comes out not fully cooked.  Ever try the wings?  Same story. It used to be a place to get great pizza and wings.  Anybody else have the same problem?  How about taking some of those dollars off the walls and pay for some quality control.

To the individual that wrote in Sunday the 15th about Gay Marriages. How can you equate those marriages with civil rights? There is nothing natural or decent about same sex marriages. I am not a bible thumper but just can't see your point of view. The children need better examples on how they should conduct themselves.

The restaurant on Cudjoe Key next to Coco’s Cantina is only open during prime time. Locals resent that. A restaurant should always be opened. When I'm hungry I want to eat. I don't have to think if today's the day their open. They teach that in all restaurant classes. People won’t change their eating patterns to accommodate the restaurant. I won’t support a restaurant what only opens during the good times while others serve the community during good and bad seasons. Support their employees year round and support the community.

If you're going to the Islamorada Rotary's Nautical Flea Mkt. at Founder's Park this weekend (Friday thru Sunday), stop by the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys tent and buy raffle tickets on the beautiful King Size quilt made by the local quilters.  You'll be helping a local non-profit help local people.  Thanks

On the comment about Waste Management.  That chair has nothing on my old dishwasher that sat out by the road for 4 months . I finally got tired of calling them and looking at it and drug it into the middle of the bike path hoping they would get the hint , but it still took another month. Is this the lousy service I pay for? The county needs a code enforcer on Waste Management like the city of Key West does. Her job is to make sure they do there job promptly and to not use your can lids as a Frisbees.

YES, having a smoking section in a restaurant IS INDEED like having a pissing section in a pool! I recently went to Chili's in N.C. to eat, the smoke from the pissing section ruined the dinner. I moved to another table, yet the odor remained. Never again will I eat at that skunk hole restaurant, even though the food would have been delicious! Florida rocks!

To the person opposed to gay marriages but not gay unions...were you also opposed to black people using white people's public bathroom's, but not opposed to them having their own bathrooms?  Did you also agree with the laws and traditions that women should not be able to vote?  Not all "traditions" that were developed from our history, are appropriate for today's changing world. Adhering to tradition is a great thing, it's comfortable.  But let's not mask inequality or oppression inside of tradition.  Love is the best emotion we have as a species, it is not biased.  Inter-racial marriages, used to be outside of tradition as well, and illegal.  Try to think outside the box, and thanks for your "support".
15 We appreciate your yard sale ad on this web site, but can this be done on an earlier date so we can plan ahead?

Ed: We'd like to print them sooner, but no one emails us their upcoming yard sales; so we have to go to the telephone pole each Sat. morning and copy the signs. Most of the signs are so crummy that we need enough daylight to decipher them--so we can't go earlier. The earliest we can get them published is by 7:30am.

Computer note: clear your browsers' cache so you get the most recent web pages. It fills up and you get the older pages stored on your computer. This speeds up your computer in many cases.
Open your browser (Ex: Internet Explorer). At the top click Tools>Internet Options>General Tab>Under Temporary Internet files>Delete Cookies>ok>Delete Files>ok>ok

If anyone uses Netscape let us know and we'll show you how to clear that cache.

Does anyone know what happened to James William Colbert, who had a business here as "Bill the Plumber"?  He was such a wonderful plumber, always very fair and honest.  I know he had cancer, but the last time he came to our house (well over a year ago), he was looking so much better.  I so hope he is okay.
Ed: Sadly, Bill passed away a couple of months ago. His son is now running the business.

How come Waste Mgmt. doesn’t pick up that metal chair on Key Deer and Lytton’s Way? It’s been there for months. Don’t they see it? The invisible ghost chair? Also, why do they have to start so early in the morning? Like 3:30 AM! Key West says they start so early to be done before the traffic builds. Well, Big Pine doesn’t have any traffic (except on Sat am). So let me sleep a little longer.

Happy Valentine's Day

I’m against gay “marriages” and for gay “unions”. It’s the word “marriage” that gets my attention. A marriage has always been between a male and a female. Just because some straight people take this view doesn’t mean that we’re homophobic, far from it. Many of us don’t think Gaydom is wrong or harmful, but we don’t want to change a tradition. I think that gay civil rights will be satisfied with the respectful phrase “gay union”.

I ate in a sushi restaurant in LA recently that had absolutely no ambiance, yet it was the best sushi I’ve ever had. They were so focused on the freshness of their fish that they closed on the weekend (restaurants’ busiest time) because the fish markets weren’t open. The rice was served warm! There was no menu. They just brought out different stuff until you were stuffed. Because of their lack of menu; on their chop stick wrapper it said “SHSUI Delicate snowflakes rest on warm, sweet rice beds--flavors intertwined. Translucent Jewel-(sliced) natural perfection-Slide into my mouth. TRUST ME!”
I’m getting hungry again. Needless to say, the place was full of Japanese customers.

Yup, Capt. Dan & the crew at the Key Deer Bar & Grill are one big family. and, like all family's are happy & work well together most of the time, but on occasion someone will holler. I guess I got over zealous & got caught. Please excuse me for that. I luv my crew & appreciate the constructive criticism from my friends and customers.

Item 2:
Pizza. At the Key Deer we make fresh dough every day. Approximately 35 lbs. We allow it to rise for the proper amount of time, which is very important. my kitchen staff  are all "into" what their doing. We have freshly prepared toppings each day. We have a great oven and that's why we have darn good pizza....   The party who mentioned the difficulty of making dough at sea level is correct. its tricky. at the Key Deer we have experimented  and its paid off. Anyone ever had pizza at the jersey shore? It's super! Oh, by the way, I came down here for the weekend, 30 years ago..still here & lovin'  and appreciating every minute of it...
Thank you, Capt. Dan McLaughlin

Being a free spirited individual I am interested in finding out more about the airline you posted February 10/04. If you know of a person or contact that could accommodate my needs it would be most appreciated. After all we are born nude and it makes absolutely no sense that we should conceal what we were endowed with, even though the endowments we have today are substantially varied from those at birth. Could the airline be "NUDE AIR" ? IE: If you've got it flaunt it.......

Re: Culinary Wars. The worst pizza I’ve had is from 2 for $20 pizza. The crust was awful; like eating dry bread. They don’t even make their own dough. They buy it frozen. Next time I’ll try D’Giorno’s and save ten bucks.
Plus, I never saw any of the writers saying Little Palm's food was bad. They just were pointing out their small portions. You Little Palm apologists haven't even addressed the point.

Little Palm Island has been recognized and awarded time and time again for its food quality, incredible atmosphere and great service. In 2003, Conde Nast Magazine ranked The Dining Room on Little Palm Island as number 2 in the nation for best food. In 2004, Travel and Leisure Magazine rated The Dining Room on Little Palm Island as number 2 in all North America. Both of these awards were reader polls, meaning actual past diners voted these results. There are many great restaurants in the area and each of them stand out for different reasons. Big Pine Cafe has a great menu and wonderful people. I like the new look!!!!

Chicken Roundup. The Tourist Development Council should sponsor a “Chicken Roundup” event to control the chickens once a year. It would be fun, wacky and control the chickens at the same time. you could have someone there to process the chickens for food or ship them out of town (where they'll get processed eventually.) that's how FantasyFest got started. With a simple idea that blossomed into a big time money-maker for the City.

8 The http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gzasuwa/ website also has a broken link to the PDF page. I'm still attempting to get to that Canal Water Quality Report. Can someone provide a link that works? Can you e-mail the report to cahillresidents@yahoo.com ?

Hi!  I just wanted to let everyone know that if you want a really great Italian meal you should try Farella's Village Cafe in Marathon.  Their address is:  Gulfside Village 5800 Overseas Highway, Marathon, FL 33050    Phone: (305) 743-9090    Open 8am to 10pm

I absolutely fell in love with their Baked Ziti for $5.95  -- the bread was delicious.  I recommend them to anyone wanting a highly delectable Italian meal that is reasonably priced.

I told the waitress that they were soooo good that I was going to tell everyone about them and that I would be putting my kudos for them on your website.

Yesterday I heard two food editors on Miami NPR talking about FooFoo food and they mentioned Little Palm Island. Try the Brunch buffet.

6 Here is a site you can point users to get the plugged canal report. I can't believe that you can't create a link to a pdf file on your server. You seem to be able to do just about everything on your site!!

Otherwise they can go to my own homepage and pick it from there:

I am storing the pdf file - the link below pulls it from my site.

Found Floating Through Cyberspace
A major research institution recently announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science, tentatively named "Administratium". Administratium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons and 110 assistant deputy neutrons giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by a force called morons, which are surrounded by a vast quantity of peons.

Regarding tiny portions: Of course Little Palm’s buffet is a generous meal—that’s what a buffet implies. I’m talking about their regular fare being embarrassingly small on large plates.

Have you seen that big white Hummer around? It looks like an expensive mix between a tank and refrigerator.

5 How could anyone think "it's hard to make bread at sea level"???? How close do you think ITALY is to sea level? Does their bread stink?

Just what the Jackson family needs - "More Publicity". There are two things that come to mind - To my mind at least.
1. "If you've got it Flaunt it"
2. "One the size of a football and the other's a great big bastard".

66% of businesses fail in the first year mostly due to having no written business plan and under capitalization. People think they have a good idea and just jump into business with no real plan except to make money. What a waste of time and money.

What’s the theory behind the froufrou food served at Little Palm Island? They serve these miniscule portions on oversized platters with some syrups splatter around. I don’t mind paying the price, but I would expect to be satisfied after I’ve eaten. The portions are so small it’s insulting. I just hate when I have to take our out-of-town guests there. I get embarrassed when the food is brought to the table in those oversized plates; as I look around I see people’s expectations dashed when they see the tiny portions.

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes? You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote an appropriations. The House of Representatives does. You and I don't write tax codes and set fiscal policy. Congress does. You and I don't control the monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Bank does.( A Foreign Bank) Remember this when you listen to their campaign speeches. YOU AND I CAN VOTE THEM ALL OUT AND NEVER LET THEM GET A FOOT HOLD AGAIN.
Colonize the moon? Sure, send all the violent criminals, psychos, mutants, crooks & lying politicians. Oops..., sorry, that's redundant.

Sounds like the Flea Market on Big Pine is staying open till 3 now. For a while. I was there last weekend and they had some really neat stuff. I understand it is open all year round. Something different to do on the weekends. Lots of fun.
