I've
seen no nasty comments about Iraq and our beloved president. What I
have seen is people voicing their Freedom to disagree with what our
government is doing. How is what we are doing in Iraq protecting our
Freedom? Am I not free to disagree with these things or should only
you have your right to voice your opinion? America is the greatest
Union ever created but the problem is our government and people have
gotten away from its roots. This country was created by men who
believed we have God given rights that can't be taken away. Yet people
in our government are taking those rights away. They have
been systematically taking them without your knowledge. Can't talk
about God in school. Why is the government concerned with that? Maybe
so your children don't learn about how and why this country was
created. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights.
Seems like we never learn from the past. In 1913 we lost control over
our monetary system. Our government gave it over to the FEDERAL
RESERVE a private organization (which is not federal and has no
reserves). Your income tax goes directly to them to pay off money the
government borrows from them. Of coarse it's a unlimited supply,
nothing for the government to complain about there. The federal
reserve tells the printers to print the money, than they, in turn,
lend it to us, the government, at a price. There is nothing behind
this paper money. No gold, no silver, only your labor! I
won't apologize for my long and boring exerpts. Just wake up America
and wipe the sand from your eyes. |

Does anyone remember when the Barometer was a
newspaper?
|
| 30 | I can't believe the cable lately. I mean, come on, we were right in the middle of watching Most Extreme Challenge-you know, the one with the Japanese people jumping on Styrofoam rocks/ pole jumping over water/ skipping over barrels, and AMAZING--they speak English over whatever they are really saying, and the cable kept cutting off. Channel 60 at 7pm. Want to forget your troubles and complaining? Just watch this show once, and you'll grow a smile! (If the cable doesn't cut out). |
| 30 | DENTAL SOLUTIONS: a few years ago, perhaps some of you even remember GREG that used to stand out by the water machine that used to be out front next to Coco's in the plaza I think he was a diagnosed excessive compulsive, well at any rate he really needed help, he lost his disability check for some months, because he had a job at Winn Dixie, but then lost it and he couldn't handle it, really, this guy needed the systems help , but of course he kept being rejected for a legitimate reinstatement of his disability check, I don't know what did finally happen to him, but he had a tooth that was causing him pain, and one day he took a pair of pliers you know the kind you get at the hardware store, and pulled out his own tooth, you may want to give that a try, please understand, that many of these health care professionals are in what is considered the upper echelon of our society, therefore they have astronomical expenses, due to there exquisite homes, new cars and their ungrateful children's' educations, therefore, they cannot necessarily afford to help you out, there may be exceptions out there, perhaps you could make a personal appearance, and beg, if you can swallow your pride, or maybe you could figure out a way to go to a third world country, where they have dentists that have been trained in Europe I've heard you can get dental work done there and take a vacation for the same money it costs you here just for the dental work. well just a thought I know how painful it must be, I am sorry for your suffering, for some immediate relief you might try going to Eckerd's and getting some tooth ache gel. |
| 30 | Re: Self-proclaimed Cynic. You are out of control and have a very bad attitude but at least you're not as boring as you were. Let me guess you have nothing and have spent your whole angry life blaming everyone around you for it. No matter where you go where you live and the people that you have come in contact with in your life you always have problems. If you even work, which I doubt, you probably get fired all the time. You are definitely not psychic and none of what you said about me is true. Your way-off Cynic. I have lived here a long time. I'm sure much longer then you. I never said I knew every thing and I never said you were wrong. What I said was your postings were long-drawn-out and boring which made you get all defensive. |
| 30 | BIG PINE SOLDIER: I salute you. congratulations on returning home with your life. I would be interested to know what your insight into the war is, that our war mongering President has informed us is over. Hey, I'm proud to be an American that believes in the Constitution and Bill of Rights, but this guy Bush is a war monger. His side-kicks such as Cheney and Halliburton sold arms to Saddam; and now are gearing up a new war machine, at the cost of young lives, I am grateful for your safe return, but this war is madness, so if by chance you read this, what's the real scoop amongst the troops over there? Are they gung-ho or is the realization of being a pawn setting in? Thank you for your courage and strength and your ability to think for yourself. |

You
guys are a bunch of bitches. From the chair to the speeders,
you're never happy. I will not punch-up to 35 mph on Key Deer
Boulevard because I don't want to murder an animal or a drunken
yahoo who uses a toothpick while at the dinner table in a
restaurant. Yes, I retired at 40 but have volunteered in the
community where I live. There is always something to do. When I
read bitchy "tomes" here and in the Citizen, it persuades me to not
volunteer within this community because you're a bunch of tattooed
cry-babies who don't brush and floss regularly. Sell your property
for a bunch of money and head on back to New York where you belong
& can speed & kill deer to your hearts desire. |

I thought there was
a link to the News/Barometer, but now I can't find it.
Ed: Yes there is. It's in the Business Directory. Just click "Newspaper". Viola!. |

Glenn Shaffer (US1 Radio), has
moved back to Maryland. He got a TV gig, I heard.

Sorry to report Dr.Troxel does not take
emergency patients; or any other dentist nearby.
I had an infected, or should say, abscessed tooth in
extreme pain and was referred to
the 3 local dentists. None could see me for at
least 2 to 3 wks. I had to go to my family doctor
to get medication. I went thru the yellow pages and
found Island Dental in KW. They gave
me an immediate appointment.

Hey... its been a few days since anyone had any nasty
comments on the president or the war in iraq. Does anyone out
their care that a soldier is coming home to Big Pine? This is
our local boy. To all of you who ever complained about the
skateboarders in our local parking lots: he grew up here and went to
defend our country; and we support our troops!
|
| 29 | Dear Tome, So I'm full of myself am I? What are you full of if I may ask? Which lies are you convinced are true? Look around you, deary. I am full of myself? I have almost nothing of worldly goods, and yet I am full of myself? Do you know everything about Big Pine as well? Oh let me guess; you are from colder regions, your a got-miner, and and have been here, lets see, 3 months. Am I psychic or what? Haven't you figured it out. I'm a CYNIC (look it up don't just guess you think you know what it means) and I'm proud to be one, Don't give me the "I'm so happy" routine--just because you have money. You're a greed-monger. Admit it! And you don't like yourself . |

Re: Idiot Driver: It's ironic that you should
mention alcohol and drug use. A person such as yourself with such a
problem should get some help and go to rehab.
|
| 29 |
If anyone has not yet noticed, there is
a white car with flames on it being driven by a young man
that is new to the area.
|
| 29 |
The slow driving San Diego couple have been here about an hour and already they are trying to tell us how to live here. Maybe if they set their auto pilot to 35mph like the rest of us they wouldn’t piss people off. They should be considerate to others and not try to slow traffic because they are retired and don’t have anything to do. |
| Wednesday April 28 2004 |
We just moved here from San Diego and LOVE it here and enjoy setting cruise control at 30 MPH on Key Deer Boulevard. It's not hard at all except some people tailgate and get uptight that we're doing the speed limit. Let's just enjoy our slow ride down this beautiful nature-kids-people-dogs-cats-birds-deer area. It's so perfect until somebody speeds by. Why aren't speeding fines doubled in a Nature Preserve? Happy to report there have been some Police giving out tickets down Key Deer Boulevard and some of them have tricky little stake-out areas all up and down the street. Tell everybody you know this is a heavy speed-trap and maybe they will slow down. |

Sorry,
but Gene Michaels was about as exciting as listening to dirt
grow. What happened to Glenn? I thought he was doing a great job
taking over. Steve Miller is too busy laughing at himself
for me...he was getting on my nerves.
That station has been way too political for my taste,
so I've switched my radio to 102.5...much better variety of music
than 104.1...they play 80's music like 104.1, but also 90's, and
current stuff, but not a lot of that rap music.
|
| 28 | Steve Miller needs no more encouragement to team up with women...hahaha. |
| 28 |
To the
person who "says" that Dr. Troxel "would not see me", you are
obviously deluded in your mental capacity. Dr. Troxel has been here
for decades and has a very good staff and is a very kind and caring
dentist. He is only one man, and can only see so many people at a
time. Probably, what REALLY happened was that you wanted to get in
immediately for a cleaning or something and was told you would have
to wait a while, which you interpreted (in your deluded state of
mind) that he didn't want to see you. It is a fairly known fact
that he tends to run several weeks in advance before you can make an
appointment. And as far as his secretary is concerned, you were
probably rude and demanding, which does deserve the third degree. |
| 28 | I agree the person writing those long tomes is very boring and after his comment I find him to be full of himself. |
| 28 | RE IDIOT DRIVER: Bravo! Now there's a girl lookin' out for her man. That's the way it ot'ta be. Are we dealing with a case of mistaken identity? Could there be more then one fire painted chariot on this island? Could there be more then one idiot driver on the Island? |

RE: “Idiot
Driver”—Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however, there
is a definite line between fact and fantasy. The gentlemen that drives
the white car with the flames has never been on Key Deer Blvd or
anywhere else at 6:30 in the morning. He leaves our house at 7:05am to
take our children to the bus stop one block away off Wilder/Ave B,
then returns to the house, has coffee, and drives to work at 8:30am on
Wilder. Also, that car hasn’t done 60 since before we moved here 4
years ago. Maybe you should lay off the drugs and alcohol until at
least noon, so you are coherent enough to know where you are and what
time it is and who is behind you. Oh, and if you were going to “chase
down my husband and beat the crap out of him with a lot of other
people,” then why didn’t you? Furthermore, I hope your manhood is as
big as your deceptive mouth is and that you are half as tough a guy as
I am a gal, otherwise it will be a short match. P.S. When you said “you jerk-off”—yeah, you probably do! |
| 27 |
Biz-Baz has been very dull since Gene
Michaels left, although Steve Miller is doing a great job on the Sat
show. I think Steve should be teamed up with the am women; and leave
Don with Bill Becker. Anyone out there agree or disagree? Lets hear
from Big Piners.
|

TOMES: thank you for teaching me a new word. I
apologize, for boring you. I am happy you find short blurbs, regarding
virtually nothing, more stimulating? I can relay a funny story of
course unless it's to much of a tome. Regarding Spanish for Big Pine,
now mind you my Spanish leaves a tremendous amount to be desired,
however I believe Big Pine is Pinos Grande, which leads me into
the following story ('tis true): A very notorious local sailor many of us know, but may be unaware of his tremendous intellect and wit, once upon a time sailed his boat over to Havana. Upon his arrival the local authorities wanted to know his point of departure. He says "gayo pinga grande" rather then cayo pinos grande, so you see he told the Cuban officials he was from rooster with a big PENIS rather then a cay with big pines. They found the whole situation quite humorous. As the true Cuban nationals are mostly an appreciative lot. Oh, and by the way, CENSORSHIP. I thought these postings from paradise were mostly exempt, but I am finding otherwise. Am I the only one? I'd love to hear from you, although I hate to spoil the fun by posting my personal E-mail. |

The words that were in the fence at Sugarloaf High School: “Honesty” and “Responsibility” What important concepts for us all. I’m glad they’re starting to teach those. How novel and original for Sugarloaf school to make a sign from plastic cups shoved into their chain link fence. I hope all those youngsters adhere to those words. |
| 25 |
Sundays’ Kudos were nice because there weren’t those long tomes that have been appearing as of late. |
| 25 |
I wouldn’t want to go to a rap concert mainly because I wouldn’t want to have to wave my outstretched arms above my head like they do and say” Yo!”. Do they still light their Bic’s? |
| Sunday April 24 2004 |
Would Big Pine be: Piňo Grande in Spanish? |
| 24 |
I could never be a biker because I don’t look good in basic black. Aren't they hot wearing all those dark colors? I see them dressed all in black leather in 80° heat and am glad I switched to boats. |
| 24 |
If you're not happy with the reception at Dr.
Troxel's dental office I suggest you try Summerland Dental. Dr.
William Tycoliz and staff are professional, caring and
qualified. I highly recommend them.
|
| 24 | Wasn't that photo of the soldiers' coffins bogus. They were actually an old photo of the remains of the Challenger astronauts? That's our media! |

![]() My son just got home from Iraq He gets here on leave on may 6th Please everyone put your flags out Hooray Mike Cody is coming home 977th Military Police. |
| 24 | I'm glad someone finally printed photos of American Soldiers' flag-draped coffins coming home. The Bush administration has been trying to sanitize this war and hide the fact that our sons and daughters are dying. |
| 24 | My dentist retired and I tried to make an appointment at Dr. Troxels', but was given the third degree by his secretary. If I wasn't in pain or had a special condition he would not see me. I was pissed. |
| 24 |
To
the idiot driver who owns the white car with the flames on the side
and works at or was visiting Exit Realty on Big Pine: I see you
going down Key Deer Blvd at 6:30 in the morning about 60 miles an
hour, tailgating, with your bright lights on in all our faces making
everybody pull over so the hog of the road can get by. The next time
you make me pull over I will chase you down and beat the crap out of
you along with a lot of other people. You jerk-off! |
| 24 | So, you shift into PARK, unlock your
doors and jump out of your vehicle to remove that paper (or whatever
it is) that is obstructing your view...when you reach the back of your
car, that is when the car-jackets jump out of no where ... jump into your car and take off--your engine was running, your purse is in the car, and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME Just drive away and remove the paper that is stuck to your window later. |
| 24 | The Mosquito Control number is: 292-7190. You can call and request a spray for your area. |
| 24 | Now lets all get together about the swimming hole--we need to keep it. There is a letter in this weeks Barometer by a Mr. Kane that makes real good sense. Shall we get up in arms and protest the fill in? We will never see a park on BP I do believe the county has another plan up there sleeve, re: Mariners park. |
| 24 |
Re: Big Pine National Ad Yes, there is an ad
running put out by the TDC. Why? Where are they going to stay; or do
they think people are going to stop by on their way to Key West?
There were some tourist at the WD Plaza looking for the "deer
park". The ad was running. On ch 7.
|
|
Friday April 23 2004 |
Mosquito plane please! I’ve lived here long enough to know that there are too many mosquitoes. After that great rain they are breeding like crazy. I live in a low part of BP and can’t finish watering my garden. |
|
| 23 | Two reasonable people (in Orlando) have told me that they have seen television advertising for Big Pine Key on national cable channels (History channel, for one). Can anyone tell me who's producing and running these ads. I can't imagine it's any busy or government entity on Big Pine. Perhaps the TDC, though I can't imagine why. I'd love to see the ad myself, so if anyone has seen it and can tell me when and where it airs, I'd appreciate it. | |
| 23 | Dr. Troxel is the only good and gentle dentist and in the Keys and he is on Big Pine. You won't get an appointment right away so call now and get on his list. They do an excellent job on cleaning your teeth too. After all you don't want to end up like that guy with the rotting gum disease whose teeth are ready to fall out of his head and he wonders why he can't get a date. | |

The quality at Pizza Works in the BPK
shopping plaza has really gone down since it was sold. I
recently ordered a Philly Cheese Steak. The bread was terrible.
Tasted like it came from Winn Dixie's Bakery. Doesn't anyone in
this damn town know how to make pizza, bread or bagels?

| 22 | Overtime pay cuts being pushed by the Bush administration are slated to go into effect for millions of workers unless Congress acts to block them. These changes would erode the 40-hour work week and mean that if you receive overtime pay now, you might not in the future. Both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House voted to oppose the Bush overtime pay take-away. Ignoring the protests of millions of working families, President Bush pushed forward with his overtime pay take-away. Can you imagine the government cutting the pay of a NYC firefighters by thousands of dollars per year? Why should your pay be cut? | |

HAPPY BANK GIRLS: Bank of America. Isn't
that where you must leave a urine sample in order to cash a check unless you are an account holder, oh maybe its just your finger prints, something... at any rate , the girls at FIRST STATE: Now your talking, throw another shrimp on the barbi for me babe would ya, your ancestors surely came from the Mediterranean area, with that black hair and those light eyes of yours, AIR ITALIA? |

| 21 | In my last letter some of it did not make it, so I'll try again. We got to see the Gulf war on TV, how come we're not seeing the Iraq war on TV? Things you shouldn't know brought to you by G.W. and friends. | |

![]() Today is National Secretaries' Day. Be especially nice to your Secretary today. Maybe a little lunch or flowers! |
|
| 21 | Why does it cost 50 thousand dollars more to build a house in the keys? Those with money can and do get a permit to build a house ahead of people who don't have money. Is that the American way? Please step aside someone in back of you has more money than you do! Are these the things you want to teach your children? Seems the problem lies with the fact nobody gives a shit until it affects them. The Government says what you can and can't do with your property. Always changing the rules, all for our own good. We can't live down stairs. There might be a flood and the sky is falling, space men are coming, yet, your paying flood insurance not to be covered for anything down stairs. Hello! Is anybody out there? Maybe we should go back to the smoking topic at the gas station or maybe I should get the beam out of my eye before I look for the speck in someone else's. Watch out for the quick sand! | |
| 21 | From my point of view having lived on Big Pine for 39 years and I've seen a lot of change. Come lobster season and FantasyFest time I see a lot of empty houses fill up around the island. Now I know for a fact a lot of these people have rented these houses. They stay for a week usually with 2 or 3 other families .They think they own the whole block and think your there for their service. Then again, I thought there was a moratorium on building for the last sixteen years, but in that time I have seen more building on Big Pine than the 20 years before. So please tell me what's right and what's wrong? I'm confused and miffed. And that gentleman still hasn't lent me his rose-colored glasses. Seems to be a run of them at the flea market. | |
| 21 | Maybe you kids could post the names of the best Dentists in town, as we need to get our twice-a-year cleanings. The guy with gum disease could also start flossing, rinsing and clear up his problems and maybe I would date him! Some of us girls here have standards AND all of our teeth & we don't want to date fellas with funky teeth, or a big belly. | |
| 21 |
To the
cheapskate guy complaining about the toothless girls on Big Pine.
From the description of yourself you are absolutely right no girl
with teeth or even a decent set of dentures would go out with you.
Watch out for those toothless girls. It Sounds like your catching
Gingivitus. My suggestion to you is a heavy swabbing of Hydrogen
Peroxide and Baking Soda and call a gum specialist immediately
before your own teeth fall out. I'll bet you don't even have
enough money to go to Central America because your living off
disablilty checks. |

| 21 |
POLLYANNA: but don't you
see Big Pine is a pollyannaish little world? The same group know
as the "I GOT MINERS". Remember that Beatle song I, ME, MINE? How
appropriate, perhaps a group of Pollyannaish Big Piners singing a
chorus of I, me, mine, holding hands and swaying back and forth,
would do nicely at the chamber of commerce welcoming visitors. How lovely for Boondocks to have been able to procure the neighboring lot. I'm guessing due to the tremendous prices charged for those cute little cough syrup cups of liquor sold to the never ending flow of pound foolish pennywise patrons. To the person wishing to hear more on local issues, here's one: What is this stupidity about the swimming hole? Fill it in? Have we gone completely mad? OHHHHHH, liability issues? OHHHH, bite me you greed mongering politicians. How many years has that old swimming hole been there already? You are really of a sick mentality to return that to a native area? You are always taking away pleasure from the poor or average person. Make it a damn park for crying out loud. You can't even sit under a shade tree around here anymore. Oh my lenses just fell through the crack in the floor and down on to the dirt! |
|
| 21 |
The girls at the Big Pine Bank of America are the
best!
In fact, the entire community of Big Pine is the
happiest place we have ever lived. I just wish the people would
stop complaining all the time. Stuff happens. Be happy and try
to be positive instead of bitchy.
|
|
| 21 | They are making a park at the old Mariners Resort and the first thing they do is fill in the canal. Now they're making a park at the swimming hole so, or course, the first thing they'll do is fill it in. We need cool deep water in our new parks. | |

To Memphis Slim. I'm
really quite puzzled as to your obsession with News Barometer's
editorial policies. Since I write them, I'm quite well aware
of the stance we've taken in the last THREE years that we've owned
it, and most of the stances we've taken have been completely
middle of the road, asking folks to find a compromise that works
for the betterment of the community. Now, my memory may not be
great, but I don't remember a single time when the nerwspaper
editorialized in favor of vacation rentals. And I'm not that old.
Perhaps Memphis Slim refers to a story that was written, as a news
article, which didn't agree with his own stance, and therefore
becomes an editorial endorsement of the opposing stance. We get
those folks through the door on a regular basis. We've probably
had Memphis Slim through the door on more than one occasion only
to educate him about the difference between editorial opinion and
news dissemination. It would appear the lesson didn't stick. Oh
well. Can't be successful in every endeavor. But public discourse
is a good thing. |
|
| 20 | Sorry, but you are wrong. The property between Cruz Animal Hospital and Boondocks is registered by the owners of Boondocks. The petition, simply stated, is to support Dr Cruz and his wife in their quest to get the owners to plant a sufficient amount of trees to replace the ones that were illegally cleared by the owners of Boondocks, to create a noise and sight buffer zone. Nothing more, nothing less. Please get your facts straight. | |
| 20 |
I guess some people just don't get it. Dr. Cruz
and his wife DO NOT own the illegally cleared
land next door. BOONDOCKS OWNS
THE LAND!

TOOTHLESS GIRLS
ON BIG PINE: I suppose being a girl and toothless must certainly
have marvelous advantages to your male partners. Yes, you are
correct to some degree, I am far from what I'm guessing would be
your interpretation of the perfect man. I am not bald or even
thinning for that matter, but I am beginning to grey, and have two
teeth that are slightly loose. I'm guessing its gum disease, how
can I fix that? No, I don't hang out at those bars much. I find
them a total waste of time and actually find it mostly
unpleasurable especially those little plastic cups with mixed
drinks three for the price of a 1.75 bottle. Now that's a deal. I
prefer going out on the boat, guzzling gin, beachcombing, or
having sex on Munson Island. Something about those gumbo limbo
tree branches... oh, la la. (albeit a rare occurrence) I don't
live in a trailer, although I have before. I shower daily,
although if I don't, I have a tendency to smell, which may be do
to my eating habits. I like to eat meat-- some very, very rare,
actually raw. I hope I did not offend you, after all it's not your
fault that it costs a fortune to go to a dentist. Once again we
have come full circle to the greedmongering effect. Hey, where
else can you live and make a wage that you can not possibly live
on? Come now, tell me about the price of paradise; and how we
should all be entitled to perfect shiny teeth. False or otherwise.
Just another social injustice. Yes, yes, 'tis wonderful. I'm happy
your life is so full. Oh, I almost forgot, I don't see so crystal
clear without my glasses either! I don't drive a new car. I don't
own a $600,000 house. So you see, dear, I don't meet the criteria
required to qualify for you missy-prissy girls. |

Right
or wrong, we are in Iraq. We can't start and not finish. Even if
the media would only sometimes focus on the positive instead of
the continuous negative news and images we might have a chance to
help Iraq become a democracy. How do we convey to the media that
we are sick and tired of gloom and doom? The whole world should
sit down and watch the classic "Pollyanna" sometime. Should
be required watching for all children! |

Thank you
once again for printing my views, I would like to say that there
has never been to my knowledge, any protester shot in
the UK. A lot of these demonstrators are claiming social
security and have the greatest contempt for anyone who works.
We have an Islamic Cleric(?), who every week in London, has a
special police detachment to guard him, whilst he
advocates Islamic terrorists to bomb and murder British and
American troops and civilians and advocates the murder of all
Jews.
He
gets £1000 pounds (about 1500 dollars) a week from the social to
keep himself and his eight children. At the moment the
Government is trying to extradite him to the
US, where he is wanted in connection with 9/11.
It is estimated that it will cost this country £1,000,000 and
about seven years to accomplish. He is also wanted in
Egypt for murder, but Britain will not allow his extradition
because he faces the death penalty there. We had two so-called
British Muslims, burning the Union Jack and no action was taken
against them. So your correspondent who had a shot at me
for my anti-protester
stance, might forgive me for my views. Incidentally,
although the police do react robustly at times, I feel that they
are reacting to the yobs who throw bricks and fire bombs at
them, or is that permitted?

| 19 | ANGRY HATE MESSAGE for Sandman. Such a pity you can't play nice. See, you're just a victim of your conditioning and programming, Haven't you the ability to reason out and come up with a civil retort? I would like to hear what you may have intended to say, perhaps you might consider using a different choice of words to convey whatever angst you may be feeling. You know it is my feeling that nothing positive will ever be achieved towards the good with hatred. Maybe you'd care to try again. | |

the guy commenting on the toothless girls on Big Pine Key.
Something tells me that you are bald or balding don't believe in
deodorant or brushing your own teeth. You probably rent some dump
trailer and hang out in Coconuts every night and you are wondering
why the only girls that pay any attention to you are toothless

About
the deer: When
they were developing and trying to sell lots in Port Pine Heights
they had a petting zoo out there. They
had peacocks and small Japanese Suzuki
deer that they released in the early 70's.
Jack Watson also went up to the everglades and trapped deer
up there and brought them back to Big Pine
in the early 70's because to many people were coming down from Key West
to poach them for Christmas dinner. That's
how Les Cunningham
died (he used to own the Big Pine Glassworks
where Montego Bay
was.) He
was chasing poachers and had a head-on collision. There
was also a wild animal zoo on Ramrod.
They released them too. So
those stories of people seeing bobcats and panthers on the islands
years ago were true. And the
iguanas....I don't even want to go there. Thank Iguana
Jim from Summerland, its
taken 30 years for them to become the dominant lizard species in
the keys. By
the way, they taste like
chicken. Speaking of
chickens... I
need to borrow that gentleman's rose colored monocle. |

To the Jokester, if you are going to tell jokes at least tell us
a funny one. The political rhetoric seems to offend your ears.
Maybe you should just change your channel-- it's a free country,
thanks to people like Nikeman and Sailor. If you didn't read the
statement for Kudos it says, "Say
it!! Don't be a chicken! (but don't be hurtful)".If we are hurting the Jokester's ears maybe we could all tell jokes--at least funny ones. To Jim, our English friend, about those dirty unwashed vociferous detractors who are protesting the Iraq war. We had those same kind during the Vietnam war. (Opps, maybe I should of said conflict). The protesters
who were beat-up, put in jail and shot for voicing their
beliefs. Maybe it's not freedom after all! Seems Mister Kerry
was one of them. I guess money has a way of changing your
political opinion about war! Hey, maybe this one is different.
Not. We will all be paying for it with our tax dollars and
freedoms for a long time to come. Maybe the ones making the
weapons to fight the wars aren't making any money there just
doing it for freedom. Not. We as a nation seem to pay for it
all. What's up with that? Things you shouldn't know brought to
you by G.W. and friends...

NIKEman: to answer your
question, I guess that's up to Bushmaster and his cohorts,
(BUSHMASTER a potentialy deadly snake in central america) Yes,
it is sad, and needless, the man speaks of evil, when he himself
is the purest form of evil. If you'd care to do some research
into these secret brotherhoods, etc. (as mentioned by Sand
man)... freemasonry and the likes you will find that their roots
go back into demonology and the worship of LUCIFER.
Unfortunately, loss of life to this man is quite insignificant.
So you see, dear chap, this is a very old program going back
thousands of years. The American bleating sheep continue to
graze upon there beliefs and indoctrinations that have been
programmed deep into their very souls. Lucifer has a nice ring
to it, don't your think? Sort of melodic.

Osama
Bin Laden was the first to apply his observation that the
Americans will not sacrafice many lives for their political views.
We value our citizens' lives above our politics. We have no
staying power when our lives are at stake. We left Somalia when we
started taking a few causalities, we bombed Bosnia for 78 days
instead of sending in any ground troops for fear of having any
dead Americans, we left the northern Iraqis after promising to
help them after the first Gulf war. The list goes on. We are
hypocrites on that score. |

am ninety-seven years old now. I do not do computers so I am having someone else do this for me. I am born and raised in the keys. I left the area when I was sixty-seven years old. I know for a fact that the Key Deer was introduced into the area for food as well as other animals. Many did not adapt. They were brought as small animals from South Central New York State and proliferated on Big Pine Key. Please let all know of this. |

A Cowboys' fan, a
Packers' fan, a Steelers' fan, and a Browns' fan. went rock
climbing one afternoon. They had been arguing all the way
up the mountain about who among them was the most "die-hard"
fan. Upon reaching the top of the mountain, the Cowboys' fan
proclaimed to the other three, "This is for the Dallas
Cowboys!" and promptly threw himself off the mountain as a
form of sacrifice.
Not to be outdone
by a Cowboys' fan, the Packers' fan jumped up and said, "This is
for the Green Bay Packers!" and then threw himself off the
mountain, again, as a form of sacrifice.
Refusing to be outdone by the Cowboy and Packer fans, the
Browns' fan rose to his feet and yelled at the top of his lungs,
"This is for the Cleveland Browns!" And without any
hesitation, pushed the Pittsburgh Steelers' fan off the
mountain.
For Sailor, Sandman,

Why would Holly and Steve Estes change their mind
about property rights issues just
because they now own their home? I would think
property issues are even more important
to them now. I'll take a vacation rental next to
me any time. The house next to me was a vacation rental. It was
always kept nice. You would never know vacationers were staying
there. When the owners were forced to rent full-term things
changed. Even though the people renting were professionals
they turned the place into a junk yard. Their attitude was that
they were paying rent and were not in the wrong.
Thank goodness they moved.

SEX SEX
AND MORE SEX everybody likes sex, right? I heard on the radio this
morning that this dude on Lobster Tail on Big Pine got busted, for
some prostitution thing. Something about a lewd act
(according to whose morals, of course) performed inside a car by
some 25 year old honey-dew-melon) hmmmmmmmmmm (literally or
otherwise). This got me to wondering, oh saintly ones, why is it
again prostitution is the oldest profession, and yet it is illegal
in the United States. Oh, praise the good Lord, this is not true
the world over! Do you think Jesus liked to knock off a piece once
in a while? Have you ever gone into Boondocks or the Tiki bar and
had a look around. PATHETIC 90% guys and maybe a girl or two,
missing their teeth.
Have you heard this one? How do you complement a girl from Big Pine? answer: NICE TOOTH BABY. And so it goes. These low scrubby islands, referred to as the Keys, have always been a living hell when it comes to finding a good girl. I challenge anyone of you to differ. And say, chaps, I know of a place, a virtual heaven as it were in Central America where there is this lovely little bar with about 150 girls to maybe 50 guys. It's really rough having them come up to you on either side. If you'd care for a little more insight feel free to post me back with your e-mail. I'm really wondering if part of the reason for domestic violence, escalated aggravation, road rage etc... is related to no sexual release. Wouldn't it be a good thing to legalize a shot of leg? I challenge you wobbly kneed ones. Respond NOW. It is the LORDS will . Do you suppose it is the Lords will as well, sailor man and sand man we are at war? Such needless tragedy and over what rotting dinosaurs? Please, please, please, I beg of you, do enlighten me, my dear dear friends. Iv'e cracked my precious rose colored monocle once again what shall I do? What shall I do? |

Dear Sandman: Bravo! I see
you have done your research and I congratulate you. However, I
will point out some minor details you weren’t inclined to include:
The DU in question is fired from only two sources, the C-130 gun
ship and the Apache helicopter. This limits the number of people
who are actually exposed to the stuff. Further, the DU rounds are
ONLY USED FOR SPECIAL TARGETS. So tell me, with such limited
exposure, how does it account for 160,000 cases of Gulf War
syndrome? I’ll tell you: IT CAN’T! The numbers simply don’t
add up. Ever think of contributing Gulf War Syndrome to the WMD’s
that do not exist? Food Contamination? Can you explain to me how
one of the densest materials in the world fired from the air into
the ground (and on average penetrating 10-15 feet) is
contaminating an IMPORTED FOOD SUPPLY? I’ll answer that for ya
too: IT CAN’T! Now, as for water, are you aware of the fact that all of the countries' water comes from a desalination plant, shipped either from Kuwait or the gulf coast? So, tell me, how are these DU rounds contaminating the water? I’ll even give ya this one: IT CAN’T. Now I’m sure your going to say, “What about the shavings or debris from the spent rounds?” Well, I’ll help ya there too. There isn’t any - at least none worthy of notice. As I mentioned before, it’s among the hardest metals known to man, if not the hardest. Now I’ll address what seems to be conspiracy theories you stated. First, no missiles took down any American plane on 9/11. To make such a statement dishonors the heros who gave their lives that day and I’m personally offended. As far as Skull and Bones, I saw that movie too. Name for me one president who wasn’t influenced by an outside group or secret society. You see, secret societies are fun for the camp fire, but I fail to see what it has to do with our debate. Now, our economic ties to the Middle East. You see, we have ties with OPEC. Iraq was not a member. We get our oil from OPEC, Venezuela and our own sources in Alaska and Texas. Most of our oil goes to the strategic reserve for a time of war. The economic tie I referred to was the $9 billion owed to Iraq by Russia (who repaid by sending outlawed weapon components) and the debt owed France that was collected by bypassing the oil for food program. Last but not least, I’ll address your comment regarding our policing others and not protecting ourselves. What do you think we’re doing in Iraq and Afghanistan? You don’t think chasing terrorists into their holes and exterminating them qualifies as protecting ourselves? The old idea of isolationism is no longer because, in our global society, it no longer works. I will, however, agree that we need to do a better job on our borders. Let’s deploy the army along the border and seal it up tight. That’s just my opinion. God Bless the USA, God guide our President, and above all, God protect our brave troops! A local voice from the Right, Respectfully, Sailor. |

Lets take a look at how big business runs our
country. In 1893 a man named Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel
engine. It ran on vegetable oil. George Schlichten invented a
Hemp decorating Machine that stood to revolutionize paper
making. Henry Ford demonstrated that cars can be made of, and
run on, Hemp. A special Interest group that included the
Dupont petrochemical company, Secretary of the treasury Andrew
Mellon and the newspaper man William Randolph Hearst mounted a
yellow journalism campaign against Hemp. Hearst deliberately
confused psychoactive marijuana with industrial hemp, one of
humankinds oldest and useful resources. In 1937 Dupont, Mellon
and Hearst were able to push a marijuana prohibition bill thru
congress which destroyed the domestic hemp industry.
Think
about it, hemp can be used for clothing, building material,
paper, food; and cars can be made and run on it. It takes less
water to grow, requires no pesticide and grows in all 50 states.
There appears to be something wrong here; or maybe its just me.
It is also good for the planet, no toxic fumes like petroleum.
Why are we not using this resource? Could it be the big oil boys
and major paper companies can't control all the money with hemp?
A question to ask: who stands to gain from keeping it illegal to
grow and use? Just a little tidbit, industrial Hemp is not the
stuff you can smoke and can get high on. The Sand
Man.

Congratulations to Steve and Holly Estes, owners of the News-Barometer, who recently bought their first house. They have been renting in Port Pine Heights since they moved to Big Pine a few years ago. Their home is near the Blue Hole. They have editorialized for years FOR issues that hurt property values such as vacation rentals in I/S subdivisions, etc. It should be interesting to see if they change their editorial policy now that they have their own piece of the American Dream. --Memphis slim |
| 15 | Someone did not spend much time reading the petition at Cruz Animal Hospital. The intent of the petition is to request that Boondocks, who "scarified" the property illegally and without permits, to replant the native plants which they removed. There is photographic evidence that the lot contained protected indigenous species. Dr. Cruz and his wife have not violated any laws because they do not own that property and they did not clear it. |

The land between Boondocks Restaurant, on Ramrod Key, and the Cruz Animal Clinic has been almost completely scarified. If you have a pet that Dr. Cruz treats, you will see a petition at the counter when you go in. The petition, among other things, says that the undersigned believe that the photographs that County Code Enforcement have of said property prior to the clearing are fakes. To get my dog's medicine, I was requested to sign the petition. I resent having my pet's health used to force me to say that Dr. Cruz and his wife can violate the law as they see fit. I refused to sign the petition. This is another reason this county has been under the State's thumb, Area of Critical Concern, for more than two decades. Senor saber lo todo. |

OH DREARY
DAY: Sailor man, Sandman, my poor little brain is struggling to
digest, this latest argument. Depleted uranium on my cereal,
Sunnis, Shiites, Batth party, cutting against the grain to be a
leader, and oil. At this point I believe I shall get up and go to
the toilet and see if I can muster up a Shiite--there now much
better. If the argument does not have oil within the parameters of
the overall picture how will we run our cars?It may appear to be beating a dead horse, since its been around a while but the old nag can still raise her head. "The sky is falling. The sky is falling". Oh, I do relish the day mother earth stages her own revolt. Perhaps she will decide to shift upon her Axis of evil or otherwise and encourage a deluge to purge herself of the filth we perpetuate upon her. I'm not buying the madness. This government is on the verge of being out of control, and we are being controlled more and more as individuals until we are not. The world is growing to hate us Americans. As we fall into line, we need to regroup, not police the world. If you come to our shores to do us harm then we attack you in self defense; nothing more nothing less. What is taking place now is one of the greatest ploys of all time. Bush has already succeeded in doing irreparable damage. BRAVO man! its so obvious to me, we are relinquishing our lives--our very souls over to this new world order. All in the name of security. Anti-terror. Ya, we the people alright, Bush is balling up the CONSTITUTION and giving it a high powered flush. Enjoy the ride. My lenses are fogging up I must go clean them. |
| 14 |
Sail on sailor, as far as the depleted uranium goes according to
The Army environmental policy institute-- holding a spent DU round
exposes a person to about 200 Rems per hour or twice the annual
radiation exposure limit. Army training manuals REQUIRE anyone who
comes within 75ft of any DU contaminated equipment or terrain to
wear respiratory and skin protection. Also, it says that
CONTAMINATION WILL MAKE FOOD AND WATER UNSAFE FOR CONSUMPTION. Of the 697,000 US troops who served in the Gulf war 130,000 HAVE reported medical problems ranging from respiratory, liver and kidney dysfunction, memory loss, headaches, fever, low blood pressure and last, but not least, birth defects in their newborn children. The levels of radiation not as high? It only takes longer to kill. Hold your breath Iraq and be sure not to eat or drink. As far as others coming to our aid in a time of crisis, what crisis? A minor detail you overlooked. Everyone has strong ties to those middle east countries--they've got cheap oil! Yes, I said that OIL word again. We went to Iraq to free the people from Saddam, that bad man, who came to power with the help of the U.S. in '79 we supplied him with weapons, a minor detail you overlooked. If the crisis you speak of was 911,we had three airliners off course for more than ONE hour with no one checking on them! Standard operation procedure was to check. They checked on the golf pro's plane within 18 minutes. The plane over Pennsylvania was taken out by two heat seeking missiles fired from a military jet. Things GW does not want you to know. Hmmmmmm, food for thought? John Kerry is just another BUSH in sheep's clothing. George and John both belong to the secret organization SKULL and BONES, when asked about it they say they can't talk about it. Where does their allegiance lie? Sailor, I have never defended or even brought up his name until today! As far as the war on terror, we seem to be losing more freedom each day. Why does it happen that way? Why are we the U.S. policing these other countries and not protecting ourselves? We spend billions on our war on drugs to put our citizens in jail, yet we leave our borders wide open. FREE all those bad bad pot smokers from jail and we would have enough money to give to the FBI. (who just said they were under funded at the time of 9/11). More to come. Brought to you by The SAND MAN! |
| 14 |
Thank you Sailor. USA all the way; and president
Bush to stay!

Thank you for publishing my last missive. I have been
reading with interest a couple of subjects aired on your website
and would like to comment.
We have in England a
place called Hayling Island and have a holiday home there.
The locals resent all change and all non-residents are called
Grockles. It is primarily a holiday resort and dies in
winter. Because of the attitude of permanent residents, the
Island is becoming moribund.
All improvements and
innovations are strenuously opposed to such an extent that the
local business community is withering on the vine. I give this
as an example, because I can see these same parochial arguments
running through some of the posted emails.
It is a fact of nature,
that to survive, all societies and species need to be dynamic.
New blood and genes must be introduced to survive. If this
change is not supported, the society or species will stultify.
I do not advocate all
change as being desirable, but it does bring new vigor, so
beware, if all change is resisted, you could be next on the
endangered list.
One other subject I would like to comment on is the pros and cons of the war in Iraq. We too in England have vociferous detractors, an awful lot of these critics are young unemployed and mainly unwashed. ( you can see where my sympathies lie)
News headlines scream about
sixty or seventy thousand protesters marching to vent their
feelings. Unfortunately there is no mention of the fifty-nine
million who did not protest. Too, there is the fact that the
majority of these protesters were born a long time after the
second world war.
Not for them the memory of
bombs falling and being machine gunned by fighter planes, ( I
experienced both as a child) If there had been someone
Like George Bush and Tony Blair to do to Hitler what they did to
Saddam, then millions of people would not have lost their lives
to that madman.
Yes, we were right to
topple Saddam, he obviously had W.M.D. He also ignored the
UN resolutions for years and never allowed the weapons
inspectors the freedom demanded. Why if he had nothing to
hide, did he give the U.N. the run-around?
Best wishes to all in Big Pine
JWH (Jim)

Thank you both for your replies (and
kudos for maintaining a sense of humor Sandman).
Regarding
DE,
depleted uranium does post a health risk - IF YOU EAT IT. I
know this from many years of working with such DE rounds (used
on Navy ships for our Close in weapons system - CIWIS). All
military weapons have an inherent risk associated with them, DE
is no different.
As far the Bombs dropped on Japan
- that was ENRICHED WEAPONS GRADE URANIUM. Totally different.
Now, our stance with the world?
Doesn't Brittan, Poland, Mexico, Japan, Australia and Spain
(among others) count as the world? You are concerned with the
opinions of those who lied to us and the UN. Russia and the
missile Gyros, France going behind the back of the world and
buying oil from Saddam as well as supplying nuclear engineers to
Saddam? (Now tell me, why would Saddam want such experts? Things
that make ya go hmmmmmm?)
You honestly care about the opinions
of countries who COULD NOT and WOULD NOT aid us in a time of
crisis? Those who deliberately deceived us? These said countries
had STRONG ECONOMIC ties to Iraq (a minor detail you
overlooked).
As for a one world government, I
would say it stands to reason that our willingness to act
unilaterally is proof enough that we have no interest is such a
thing. You see, we have made it clear that we WILL pursue our
interest first, regardless of world opinions or consent.
Ok, now for some fun :) Lets see,
listen to Kerry? I have. I do love to see where he stands on a
certain issues from day to day. That man has the consistency of
water. I know you can't tell me what Kerry's opinions are
because it seems he doesn't know himself. The "Republican
Talking Heads" have to put forth little effort to make
sport of that flip-flopping gentleman.
As for those uniting in Iraq against
us, again, they are a minority. The Sunnis and Shiites have made
it clear on numerous occasions that they will not settle for
only partial control of the new government. As for the bath
party, do I even need to go there? You are saying that the Iraqi
are neither willing, nor capable of thinking for themselves, and
are undeserving of the freedom that the majority so deeply
desires.
You make reference to our leadership
position in the world. A leader is one who is willing to go
against the grain and make the decisions he feels are right.
Your not calling for us to be leaders. It seems you are calling
for conformity. This is a dangerous and complacent attitude.
Many times true leaders are forced to make unpopular decisions
only they are convinced are correct. Fortunately, history tends
to vindicate these actions once they have past and all facts are
known. To conform to the will of the world is NOT what is right
for America.
Ok Sand Man. You asked why Iraq, Do
you forget (or ignore) the fact that we went to
Afghanistan first, then Iraq. Well, let's start with the fact
that Saddam was sending a check for $25,000 to the families of
homicide bombers. This alone doesn't justify a title of
proliferators? Would you wait until Iraq sold its WMD's to UBL?
Yes, my friends, they exist. Unless it was Fabreeze that killed
the 12,000 Kurds in Northern Iraq, what were they making with
their duel-use mobile labs? Easter Candy? Further, why
manufacture the delivery systems for WMD's, if you have no
intent of using or possessing them? This is in reference to the
multiple guided missiles found with an open payload compartment.
They were going to put something in there - hmmmmmmm? I wonder
what it was?
As far as your argument this is
about oil. That is such a weak argument, discredited years ago,
so not even the most left-wing people are using anymore. Why are
you? Anyway, since that is so utterly extinct, I won't waste
time explaining it to you.
Ok, Was Iraq responsible for the
first or second WTC attack? No - not directly. But it's already
been proven that Saddam was a proliferators, and an easy next
target in the Axis of Evil. Always do the easy tasks first. You
seem to yet ignore the benefits of our war on terror, i.e.,
Libya and North Korea. I directly challenge you to debate these
issues with me. And I further challenge you to defend Kerry.
Respectfully, Sailor
|
| 13 | OH DEAR! Partisan media. Skewed vision. Oh there, I shall place my framed lenses skewed upon my head, there, now I have the skewed vision part at least. I'm afraid I am inclined to agree with SANDMAN'S point of view thus far. If you were in Iraq and had a gun held up to your head, and someone telling you to accept and beeeelieve in our God, not yours, I'm guessing most would say "Yes, maaaser i's do whatevers you sez". So much for the sentiment among Iraqis. John Kerry or Georgie-porgie the second. Merely another puppet show. How about a puppet with only two strings instead of our, hmmm lets see we can stomp our left or is it right foot, and raise either our left or right arm? |
| 13 | The SWIMMING HOLE. You simply must understand, the reason the swimming hole has been roped off and placement of the dubious signs that are now present, would be due to the following: LOW LIFE individuals, not worthy in the eyes of those who hold to heart a higher moral conduct, in other words a persons who's droppings, as it were, have no odor, whilst the rest of ours might well reek of being putrid. Perhaps in the event of a higher social calling they may reopen the gates, but not for you fellow man. Don't you see a cause is needed? Validity, my friend, maybe some more whales? Social injustice. Ahhhhh nothing quite like it is there? Second only to hatred, then perhaps, some war, shall we also through in a batch of napalm? Your a beautiful lot! If you peer as deeply as you can into the depths of the old swimming hole, and the sun is just at the right angle, you may catch a reflection off a pair of rose colored lenses I once lost there, please would you be so kind as to return them? |
| 13 | You go sailor. too many bleeding hearts and liberals makes me want to puke. To put animals and plants on their chess board and use them as pawns. Seems to me these are the people who don't have to much to lose. When they get something worth keeping they change their tune quickly. GO BUSH, GO U.S.A. |

Hello
all you good people out there in Big Pine, Perhaps you would allow an outsider a little say. I have read a lot of the views expressed by your correspondents in the Kudos and Whiners section of your web page. I find myself agreeing with parts of a lot of the opinions expressed and conversely disagreeing with other parts.
Having lived now
for sixty seven years, what I do know, is that all these
problems and disagreements will in time, disappear and if they
do not, you will.
In the great
scheme of things, who now recalls the atrocities committed by
our ancestors in the distant past? Now I am not saying
that these problems should be disregarded, but please do get a
sense of perspective, fifty years after you are dead, no one
will remember you.
I am a Brit
and have visited your beautiful area of America and can't wait
to get back. You are oh, so fortunate to live where you do, so
count your blessings. Do not stop whining though, because
that, apart from armed force, is the only way to get the powers
that be to take note, ergo the trouble with governing Iraq.
Changing the
subject, I love the recipe section and look forward to cooking
some of them, especial the chicken on a throne. I stayed
in Key West when I stayed in the Keys last time, but next time I
hope to stay about halfway down the keys, do you not have any
hotels etc; in Big Pine?
My name by the way
is James (Jim) and I live in Southampton, Hampshire, England.

Sorry to
disagree but there are a few things you should consider before
shrugging off the Sandman's
comments. For the first time in many years the Sunnis, Shiites
and Batth party members in Iraq are
uniting to expel us from Iraq.
Forcing a Democratic form of government on people who want a
theocracy form of government is anything but
freedom. It is taking away their
freedom to choose their own form of government. |

Sail on sailor to the
land of Illusion or Confusion!. Drop 250 times more depleted
uranium than Hiroshima and nagasaki on people in Iraq and
say they love us for freeing them???? [I Love you America] from
how many countries around the world can this be Heard?
About those returing troups; did you read or see anything about their health proplems from that depleated uranium in the news or on TV? Things Americans should not know brought to you by GW and friends! As far as my skewed vision is concerned, the world as I see it, is being munipulated into a one World goverment, owned and operated by the rich. Us being the workers them injoying the Fruits of our Labor! Every war fought makes the rich richer. $$$$ Everybody else pays with their life or childrens' lives. As far as preemption--I confess my Ignorance! (the right of purchasing before others) I did look it up! If sadam was such a bad, bad, bad man why were we dealing with him to begin with? Well I guess it's ok to buy oil or whatever from those bad bad bad dictators as long as it suits our needs. Well, thanks for all the imput sailor, Peace to you and yours. Signed the sand man |

I see Catherine Vaccarro is still alive and
writing in the News-Barometer. She came to the March meeting of
the Big Pine Key Civic Assoication. She was well received and took
copious notes. I may be too cynical (How is that possible?)
because I felt she was there to write a "hit-piece"; something
along the line about how the Civic Association was a paper tiger
now that those "bad" people, Kathy and Larry Sullivan, were gone.
Well, the meeting was advertised as just a potluck when it was actually a thank-you party for the Sullivans. Ms. Vaccarro, who writes, ON THE LIGHTER SIDE, found Larry Sullivan very charming and quite nice. I guess Steve and Holly Estes, owners of the News-Barometer, didn't have Ms. Vaccarro whacked, they just didn't let her say anything nice about anyone the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce doesn't like. After a six-week hiatus, ON THE LIGHTER SIDE, appeared on April 9, 2004 with a column about their cat dying. BOY, she must have had some really NICE things to say about the Sullivans. Am I the only one that notices the SMELL around here? And it ain't the seagrass! --Memphis Slim |

Have no fear, we won't let Wal-mart take over our
town. We want Big Pine to stay rustic. This is the reason most
of us moved here; to get away from concrete jungle, malls, super
duper market places. Most likely, if Winn Dixie sells,
Albertsons or Publix will take its place here.

| 10 | I think we'll be forced to change our community and allow chain stores to further take hold on our island. I feel this way because I'm sure there are more corrupt politicians out there like Jack London who'll sell out our charming community for a few bucks. The greedy bastards. |
| 10 | I enjoy reading this column every day but I think your comment after the crucifix was in poor taste. |

Dear Sandman - Regarding your post about Iraqis feelings toward us, it appears you have fallen victim to partisan media. And, as is typical with liberals, you refuse to see any side that doesn't justify your skewed vision of the world. As a military man, I'm blessed to hear multiple stories from returning army troops about how happy the people are about their freedom. What you see on TV doesn't begin to cover the MAJORITY of sentiment among Iraqis. You may have conveniently ignored the reports that most insurgents are FOREIGN FIGHTERS. Also, I guess you are so focused on oil, you neglected to catch the minor detail about PREEMPTION. Look at the reaction from Libya after our liberating Iraq. Try, oh try my liberal friend, to consider ALL the angles - not just the ones that suit your views. Signed: Sailor |

I have Found your rose colored monocle and put it
on. Behold! once I was blind and now I can see! I see my rights as
a citizen being taken away with homeland security and the Patriot
Act. You can be arrested, put in jail, held indefinitely, no bail,
no lawyer, no trial, no charges; only suspected of a crime. Where is that 14th amendment to the constitution? Mr bush said he would, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend. Signed The SandMan. |

In my opinion, a Wal-Mart would depreciate the value of my home on Big Pine Key. Is driving 20 minutes North to Marathon or 30 minutes South to Wal-Mart that hard? Have you ever noticed while shopping at Wal-Mart the continuous loud "bleeping" of the scanner at the register. I'd rather cruise on my bike and hear roosters in the parking lot at Winn Dixie than $$$$ registering at a Wal-Mart. Better yet, cruise on my bike and shop at the flea market to support our locals. There's a reason Islamorada is so charming. They let Key Largo and Marathon take on the BIG CHAINS. Take note Big Pine. |
