What is wrong with the term "civil union" for a gay marriage? All that is needed is insurance and other legal benefits, not a "marriage".

Everyone has an interest, mine is in getting the canals opened.  I am not alone in this and want to find out what has to take place to make this happen.  We live in a world of bureaucracy but this does not mean that positive change can not take place.  I just need to know where to start and how to take the steps to help it happen.  There are those who are complacent and allow others to do their bidding but only because they choose not to make waves or use their God given voice to speak out for the majority.  One person can make a difference and many people can make it happen.  Is asking for the canals to be opened that political?  If it is, then where are the rights of the voters?  And why would it be judged so?  P.S. I do not live on a plugged canal.

Thank goodness for the legislators of many Sates in this United States for finally recognizing that the gay community are as much a part of our society as those who consider themselves being straight. It goes without saying, "No one, including the Government, has the right to interfere with what goes on in the bedrooms of its citizens". Canada, among other forward thinking nations, has enacted legislation that allows same sex partners to marry, in line with the other progressive nations. I say to h**** with the religious right. May they fester in their own anti-"our way or the highway" beliefs.......
29 The Muslims have never, throughout history, enjoyed human rights. It is the women who have no freedom, and the men are not willing to give up control. Kill anyone who does not believe as they do. It is a matter of uneducated, lower mental capability that holds the Muslim's captive. They live in fear, anger and envy. Like a mad dog that has to be put down, there is no hope of converting the Muslim mindset.

They have a $2,000 refrigerator with an ice maker that still only dispenses a few cubes a minute. It’s much easier and faster to open the freezer and grab a handful. It’s also about $1500 cheaper. People are crazy with all these excesses.

28 Is this your phone number?
This only works for the seven digit phone number--no area code.
 1) Key-in the first 3 digits of your phone number into the calculator
 2) Multiply by 80
 3) Add 1
 4) Multiply by 250
 5) Plus last four digit of phone number
 6) Plus last four digit of phone number again
 7) Minus 250
 8) Divide by 2 at last

In 180 days Massachusetts is going to legalize Gay Unions. About time.
Religions should not feel threatened because this is only for legal reasons in order to give gay couples their civil rights. Isn't that the Christian thing to do?

The theory that the canals remain plugged because they are veritable cesspits and opening them would unleash thousands of gallons of untreated human waste into the ocean would be valid had the numerous water quality tests indicated high nutrient levels. But instead, the expert documentation indicates these canals are environmentally healthy and pose no danger to the ocean. The fact is, there remains on court record that the top representative from the Florida DEP stated that the canal system would never be opened. This statement was made before a formal permit to remove the plug was filed. This was a pre-judgment based on misinformation, personal bias of the DEP rep and personal ambition of the hearing officer.
27 Enough about the canals, get on with it! Some people seem to be more interested in human wasteland canals than their own souls.

Here is my theory on plugged canals versus free flowing -
Most homes in the lower keys have septic/aerobic/cesspit systems. According to sanitation engineers (I have talked to in the Keys - before buying my home here), these systems begin to fail the day they are installed. This is due to the extremely porous subsurface that is soaked with sea water. Every homeowners sewage merely is transported into the subsurface water before it gets a chance to decay in the 'imaginary' dry septic system. Another words - the water level in the canal is exactly the water level below the surface everywhere! Most canals (unless they are adequately flushed with fresh sea water) have become open cesspits we all marvel at. The EPA know that if the canals were opened, (this) would unleash millions of gallons of untreated human waste into the sea. They think this is bad. The Disney Cruise Ship, Celebrity Cruise Ship and others don't think human waste is bad. They dump it everyday a few miles off our coasts. It's legal. Human waste is not toxic. It's not DDT, or PCB, or radioactive waste. But instead, it is probably better to bottle it up in the canals and let it sloooowly leech into the surrounding sea water. This is more controlled and. Slower. Sewers could help. Sad to say, but the land in the Keys is similar to 'used' wet toilet paper.

As a regular follower of this site it seems to me that with all of the recent godliness that appears to flow from those who would have us all believe that HE/SHE is the salvation to all mankind. Surely with all HIS/HER earthly powers HE/SHE would at the very least clear the clogged canals that have festered such outrage. Let us pray that HE/SHE are up there listening to the outcries of we, HIS/HER obedient servants, who, for the want of something more interesting to debate, have brought upon themselves the need to create an avenue that will serve their personal interests and which are of absolutely NO interest to the vast majority of the residents of BPK - May the powers of the "Supreme Being" hover over you and bring blessings of clean canals to your doorstep. AMEN.......
24 By some of your readers' comments it looks like Buddhists are all bad people and are going to hell because they don't believe in God.
24 In response to the plugged canals versus free flowing, would free flowing canals help with the weed problem? Or just help change the water from a mysterious solid brown to a crystal clear green with weed as an accompaniment?

Belief in God makes one spiritually conscience. Follow the teachings of Jesus to see the light. Otherwise, muddle through life unenlightened.
23 Who was working with Joan Tucker to open the canals?  How would we go about starting a committee to open them.  Who has a reasonable explanation as to why they are plugged.  What purpose does it serve to open them or keep them closed.  Yes, you have 2 people that are very interested in knowing why the canals are not allowed to be opened.  There are many more that would support opening them, I am sure.  Who has the ultimate say in getting them opened?  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how we can rise above the politics and personal conflicts that have caused them to be closed?
23 To those new to the area who asked why some of the canals on Big Pine Key are not free flowing...? Well, I would hate to dampen anyone's enthusiasm for their new community... But the sad irony is, our lives and future are in the hands of incompetent quasi-politicians and wanna-be environmentalists who could never succeed or compete at that level anywhere else on the mainland, all with a Napoleon complex who, despite numerous petitions for the canals to be opened, despite numerous water analyses, surveys and studies that all indicate our canals are in excellent health, continue to oppose their being opened because of personal agendas, vendettas and misinformation. The plugs were initially partial earthen curtains temporarily placed at the openings of new canals to contain the silt and particulate matter that was stirred up during real estate development and dredging, from flowing into the previously dredged canal beyond the plug. Yet the earthen curtain did not completely restrict the transfer of fresh sea water and sea life. When the silt settled, the plugs were to be removed, resulting in a completely open canal system. But that didn't happen at Cahill Pines and Palms. For years our plugged canals have been crystal clear and flourishing with snapper, tarpon and other sea life. But recently the earthen curtain was replaced with dangerous construction debris and concrete, entrapping sea life and preventing the exchange of sea water. Try dumping that stuff into your canal and see what happens if you get caught. Dumping onto wetlands is dangerous, illegal and vigorously enforced, but not when the DEP is doing it. We're looking for a serious and committed interest in this matter and welcome any ideas. We want the canals opened, which is our right as property owners on canal systems.
23 Living in the Keys are both the closest to living in paradise and farthest thing from it. It is a paradox that perhaps you have sought here, and have found a refuge from the fast and furiously paced corporate world. the "Keys lifestyle" is evasive even here. Where there is money, there is power, and power corrupts. Where there is corruption, there is anger, and anger destroys. Those who feel powerless, exploited or lose hope become angry. They either turn their anger outward or inward. An educated belief in God substantiated in fact and not blind credulity, stripped away of human tradition, ritual, and dogmatic emotion that has nothing at all to do with God, is not a belief based on ignorant acceptance but one founded on accurate knowledge.  Belief of this type gives hope--which is an assured expectation of the reality to come. Belief is the result of study, contemplation and application of what has been learned and is certainly worth pursuing during these turbulent and uncertain times.

Where were you 40 years ago on Nov 22, 1963 when Kennedy was killed?

22 To the person who asked why some canals are not free flowing, from what I hear it's because of politics and personality conflicts on county and other governmental levels.  There have been many efforts on the part of a few dedicated people to get the plugged canals open, but to no avail.  One champion of this cause, Joan Tucker, recently passed away, and so now the cause has no clear lead or direction.  Anybody interested in getting the plugged canals open?

A conscience does not come from a belief in God. I have a very strong conscience and do not believe in anything supernatural. I’m sure you’ll find that most prisoners do believe in God and they’re still criminals. Believing in God does not make a person good.

The bible judge with the 2-ton ten commandments put his religious beliefs above the law. That is the main reason we must enforce separation of church and state. People could choose myth over reality.

17 The Ten Commandments had to be removed from the courthouse, yet we have to swear on the BIBLE to be sworn in for court? Hypocrites. The anti-Christ are trying, along with the Muslims to destroy America. Our own courts are allowing this SATANIC travesty!

In regards to the letter from Mr. Beal from Skeeter's Marine.  We could afford to have a few less boaters out on the water, because of the damage they do to the area shallows.  Why don't you teach the idiots that  buy your boats, about boating and the ocean, maybe we'll have less prop tracks in the shallows.  A park will not make people forget about the ocean and leave, your prices will.
14 I shop winnd-dixie all the time and always have great service at the meat room anytime i want something cut no problem, the woman in the meat room (tall blond ) has always been a great help maybe she should be the boss because she's always on top of things and a great help does she need winn dixie housing or does she just enjoy her job good luck to her and i hope she makes more than 15.00 20.00 per hour because she deserves it.
14 I am passing this on to you because it has definitely worked for me. By following the simple advice I read in an article, I have finally found inner peace. The article read: "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you've started." Such simple advice. So, I looked around to see all the things I started and hadn't finished. Today I finished one bottle of red wine, a bottle of Jack Daniel's, my Prozac, a box of chocolates and a half gallon of caramel swirl ice-cream. You have no idea how good I feel......
14 We visited this summer & want to move over from San Diego.  Is this a Happy place for a single Mom, her 13 year old child and our three cats & a dog?  I hear that the nearest school is an 45 minute drive down to Key West & it's not that good.  The Keys look like the Caribbean & is much warmer than San Diego & The Pacific Ocean.  You guys have it REAL good over there!  See you soon.
14 Before you defend the illegals, WHO ELSE gets free medical and food stamps, all with NO taxes deducted from their undercover pay??? And do they spend that illegal tax free money here in the US? Before you complain about "illegals", make sure you are legal. Do you accept pay "under the table", and fail to report it? If you do, you are not paying taxes, either. Do you shop at the flea market? How many of those vendors pay sales tax? Try asking for a receipt showing the sales tax you paid. When you can save a buck, you probably do, what American wouldn't. How can you expect your so called "illegals" to be any different! Work to get "the system" changed if you don't like it. But, be careful of what you wish for, you may not like what happens.
13 Always check the expiration dates on meat- if it is expired that very day, it should be 50% off (ask for a markdown). It is safe to cook or freeze on the expiration date. Anything older- don't buy it. WD will lose on stale sales.

No kudos here. For the fifth time in six months I found multiple packages of out of date meat on
in the cooler at Winn Dixie. The first couple of times I notified the butcher , as that did not seem to have an impact I notified the Asst Manager. This to has not had any impact since as litlle as three weeks ago I found approx 20 packages of chicken out of date.
Tried to contact the Monroe County Folks in Key west and Marathon, they don't care and passed the buck to the state Department of Licensing who said I could fill out a complaint form and send it to them. I still have not received it. SOO it is up to you local people to police our own grocery store as the management there don't seem able to do it.
12 Anyone who wants to be on the SAC committee at Sugarloaf is more than welcome. You can nominate yourself and your name will be on the ballot.  On an average there are 10 people that show up at any given SAC meeting. (Most of them are school staff). Parents if you are mad about the way things are going.  GO TO THE MEETINGS!!!!!!! Your voice can only be heard if you are there.  As I said before nothing will change unless you say "I've had enough".  There are other things to cut back on beside a teaching position, for example - travel expenses, novelties that show the school logo, tee shirts for the staff, the list is endless.  When in dire straits a person can also tighten the belt a little more, they just might have to do without some things that they want or think they need.  And speaking about wasted money, $87,000.+ was received for the FCAT only 10% of that went to the school and the kids -- the rest went to the teachers.  NOW ARE YOU LISTENING!!  And one last thought, the 10% from the fundraisers is no longer an option, the community spoke loud and clear that this money belongs to the children.

WOW! K'D's has good salads! God help this town! if you really think K'D's has good food you must love pig roast and also dine at The Sharks Reef! When K'D's was the Oyster House and Kim's father still owned it , wow was it awesome, the mistake was giving it to Dan, who knows NOTHING about running a restaurant not to mention treat his employees! and how you can claim the food is good when they just FINALLY started serving fresh fish after years of serving us frozen fish from Vietnam!! Alrighty Then!!

12 Thank you BPK for printing comments about things the KW Citizen is censoring- like comments about illegals. If the illegals want to live here, they need to pay taxes, get a SS card, and pay their own medical like American's do! And OH yeah, learn to speak ENGLISH!!!

Understandably a person needs time away from the day to day pressures, we as contributors have showered upon you from time to time; and with little or no consideration for your personal needs or responsibilities. I as a regular reader of "Big Pine Key.com appreciate the effort you put forth in allowing us the opportunity to express; and sometimes vent our pent-up frustrations and anxieties. Your work in this field represents the true meaning of democracy and the right to speak freely, a right that is absent in so many societies. Keep up the good work - No matter the cost.......
11 To the person who is worried about FEMA  and another hurricane. FEMA is a Dictator in a Democracy that is not suppose to exist.  More and more of these little puss head are popping up everyday and that's because there are to many gutless people like you around that won't standup to them.

To the person that thinks Theresa Axford is so great... Why is it she doesn't have to answer to anybody about how she spends money at Sugarloaf??? Why is it that the SAC meetings  minutes have been changed when she looks at them to reflect what she wants people to know about??? Why is it that the money that is earned from our children's FCAT scores does where the principal wants it to go and not where the parents want it to go? Why is it that we can vote for the people the principal wants on the SAC Committee and not all the people who want to be on the SAC Committee?
10
If you want a swimming pool on Big Pine Key, PLEASE partake in the park meetings for the proposed park at the end of Sands Road.  If those who want a park supported the idea and went to the meetings, we'd have a better chance of having a family place here on Big Pine Key. the only people who goes to the meetings are those who are opposed to everything and those who want improvements stay home and we end up with nothing here. Let the planning department know what you want or be satisfied with what we have now. We used to have a place to go swimming here on the weekends. When the Mariner was open so long ago, many locals would go there and spend the day in the pool. Who here remembers?  This isn't a new idea here.
10
At least KD's was tented. With the prices that properties are selling for these days, Maybe Dan needs to raise his selling price so he can keep up with the current rate. Didn't the montego lot go for almost as much money as the contract on KD's. that's a piece of Big Pine History. Who here remembers the Oyster House? How much change do we really want here? I'd hate to see that property leveled for a chain restaurant. When KD's leaves, so does the blackened beef tips and the seafood stew.
10 If you know you are going to the Winn Dixie, keep an extra pair of rubber shoes in the car.
10
Fish and wildlife is federal and answers to no one. They have nothing to do with the building codes we have to build structures by.  They can do whatever they please and we will still have to pay for the repairs even though they can build their structures with cardboard. MEANWHILE... our county commissioners are still taking our lives in their hands dicking around with the FEMA laws they've been skirting for 27 years. How many of us will suffer if we have another hurricane like Georges if we don't have FEMA funding?

They want to fill in the swimming hole on US-1. Forget that! Make it into a mini-park for the people. There is no place else to swim on BP unless you have a canal.  Lake Winn Dixi is too shallow.

9 To the person commenting on the fundraisers at Sugarloaf School. The Principal is doing what she has to to make up this money instead of losing a teacher.  This deficit is something Mrs Axford has no control over this it was handed to her and she is doing what she can to cover the deficit without losing a teacher. Taking the 10% was just one option but since everyone is so upset about it she is not doing it now. I think more parents should come to PTO & SAC meetings so they will be more informed.
9 I had the worst day of my life yesterday then I went to Winn Dixie to pick up one item and the girl behind the check out counter where they sell the cigarette's yelled at me?  I couldn't believe it. Then I went out into the parking lot and ruined my new Berks stepping in the lake to get into my car. How many of you out there have been ripped off at Winn Dixie? Ever notice that the mistakes are always in their favor. Scratch off that stinking card they give you and it always says  "sorry,"  we just got you again and all you end up with is crap under your fingernail, wet shoes and more of your hard earned money stolen from you and your feelings hurt by some underpaid, bad attitude, assistant manager behind their check out counter. (Now I feel better:)
9 I love the  steamed clams at KD's.Your salads are excellent too and your French onion soup yum yum !!!!!   What a great deal too!  You are an asset to this community.
I hope you don't sell your place I want you to stay.  Why can't you open up your tiki bar outside?

Good news in the paper yesterday;  McDonald’s wife donated $200 million to public radio, Marijuana is good for you, and the Senate moves to remove travel restrictions to Cuba.

8 Loved the "edited" W. Churchill analogy targeting the never ending, U.S. TAX DOLLAR funded "huggers" vs. the annoying, so-called ignorant, refuse to give up, "common man" Piners.   Oh, by the way, how about that new stainless steel grill on wheels  U.S. Fish and Wildlife purchased for their functions!?!  One can only imagine how many deer would have died without it.
8 Canal Plugs constructed from concrete bags and blocks and other building materials are the same as dumping garbage onto wetlands, which is illegal. But plugs seem to be the quick fix-all for conservationists, environmentalists and tree huggers et nausium who argue against boats, seawalls and docks littering the canal shorelines. If they are so concerned about conservation and the environment, logic and reason dictate they should stand up and fight to get those trash heap plugs removed from the wetlands and return the canals to a natural state allowing a free flow of seawater and sea life.

It would seem by your many contributors that progress on Big Pine Key should remain a non-issue. It has been said "You Grow or You Die". That message should be a warning to all who would preach the gospel of conservation at all cost. It appears to me that we have matters that deserves our attention. To quote Winston Churchill, (although somewhat altered ) - "Never in the anals of human history have so few had so much to say about so little and thereby effecting so many". I'm sure Winston would agree if he were a resident and with us today.......
7 You have to scroll up beyond an area of blank space to see the "Kudos & Whiners" banner. I too, thought it had disappeared until I accidently scrolled upward!
Ed: Thanks for letting us know. I think I've fixed it. If I haven't please tell me.
latter today Ed: I guess I haven't fixed it after all. So far I've looked at it on 7 different computers and two different browsers (Explorer and Netscape). The Navigation bar is visible without scrolling on all of them. I'm baffled. Any ideas?
7 How is it that the biggest Big pine construction project is being done out back at the fish and wildlife place on Wilder road and without a permit or any of the engineering, impact crap that we have to endure? Why can the same people who have final say over our permits and lives just go ahead and do as they please? They move mobile homes in there as well to house their help. Try that at home and see what happens! Hypocrites....the worst crime of all.
7 To the girl bartender who has lung cancer.  I feel bad that you have this illness, really I do.   I don't know if you were a smoker.  I am not a lawyer or a doctor but I would think breathing in 30 or more cigarettes a minute for 8 to 9 hours at a time in a closed in bar room might have contributed to it greatly!!!!!!  Working under those poor conditions is probably against the "Employee's Rights Act." There are certain things that a working place has to provide and I would think oxygen would be first on that list.  What do you think?

Total Bummer folks,....
The sale of KD's fell through! What a shame, Dan will be real bitter, restaurant will be better than ever now!!!!

Did You all here that the sale of the Winn Dixie shopping plaza also fell through.
The people that were going to purchase first put in for permit to fix parking lot and the county denied the permit, so the buyers pulled out, why buy that piece of junk shopping plaza if you can't fix it up! So see all you folks that complain about the county and code enforcement not looking out for you!, they'll do exactly what you all bitch about, No Progression, YEA!!  Bye the way did you know that code enforcement and county bullshit is the same all over the country, and that’s because you all bitch among yourselves. It takes alot more energy than that to make change.

To all tourists: Don’t take pictures of the deer with those tracking collars on—they don’t count, they're cloned.

While John Pagent is asking us to adopt a class, the Principal of Sugarloaf School is taking 10% of all fundraisers that the children are involved in.  She is also taking 20% off the top of PTO fundraisers.  Did she ask us??? NO!!!  Is this right??? NO!!  This children work hard for this money, it will offset cost of band trips, help support yearbooks and support the sciences.  It is time we all said "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take anymore!!!" Parents fight for what is important, the future of our country --Our children.
5 What's with you people! No one wants change except where it suits them. No Golf course but let's have mini put for the kids. No chain stores but it's sooo far to drive to get anything. Like I've said before, if it wasn't for change none of you would be here. Quit your whining and let's get on with it! And before you jump all over me...no, I don't want to see build out either...that's not why I live here, but some conveniences are nice.

I always knew Rush Limbaugh was numb, but now I know why.

Why can't the postings be done on Thursday nights for the Friday and Saturday Sales.  People should be able to send their emails in on Thursday so that they won't have to wait on Saturdays for the postings to come out.  Then all other sales from the telephone pole on Key Deer Boulevard can still be posted on Saturday mornings.
Ed: We will post them any day we get them. Up 'till now only one person has ever sent a notice of  a yard sale to us.

Hi:  What happened to the top of your web page, it's been missing for quite sometime now.  I can't get to anything except the business directory.  Thanks.
Ed: I don't know why you can't see the top banner with all the features. I've checked it out on different computers and it always shows up.

Rush Limbaugh is a hypocrite on a grand scale. His quote:”Too many whites are getting away with drug use. The answer is to...find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them, and then send them up the river.” He bought 30,000 Vicodin, Lorcet and OxyContin pills and was taking up to 30 pills a day while criticizing other celebrity dopers. Let’s put him right down there with Jim Bakker, the God-selling-embezzler and Rush’s good friend the gambling-addicted Bill Bennett, author of “The Book of Virtues” and “The Moral Compass”. Note: repeated doses of Vicodin, can cause severe hearing impairment.

To all the restaurants that hire the Russians: Have you ever noticed how bad they are treated when their pimp-daddy-slave-trader-sponsor comes to check on them and steal their paychecks? he stands in the parking lot screaming at them for God knows what. You all need to kick him off your property. They're terrible people. Somebody should do something.
3 Everyone thinks about adult things to do in the Keys, what about something a family with CHILDREN can do? A golf course on Big Pine? Another ADULT entertainment, but what about our children? Where do they go for entertainment? Winn Dixie and shop-lift games? Why not have someone purchase the Montego Bay property and put in a Mini-golf, where all can enjoy it. Where can a family in this area take their children for a night out other than going to a bar, restaurant or if lucky, a ball game? How many miles must we travel just to see a movie? THINK! Hey, "they" can spend the nights walking Key Deer Blvd! Did you go Mini-golfing as a kid up North? I did and I took my kids and had fun!
3 They think your only suppose to live in the keys if you you have a lot of money, Have your head up your butt, and like to play Golf. Could you imagine these people trying to do what you people do at Winn Dixie!! Sometimes it gets backed up. But I have seen so many people come and go there. You have mostly a good group now. Maybe we need Winn Dixie Housing!!!!!

Rents haven’t been keeping up with the cost of house purchases. Tenants get ready for big rent increases to go along with the inflated housing costs. Who can afford all this? They sure don't work for Winn-Dixie.

Does the word “Art” come from the word ARTificial? All art is artificial or, by default, it would be natural.

Besides plugged canals, dead-ended canals are just as unpleasant. Whatever blows in from the sea has nowhere to go and festers into a malodorous, putrid scum. Looks bad too.

B.C. (before computers) students had to remember things. Now they just do a simple Google search and get all the information mankind has to offer instantly. Encyclopedias are so passé.

Why do they have gates on the swimming hole on US-1? Did the whales poop too much in the canal?
