has gotten to the point of ridiculous. We are people,.........people
need our "funds" to. It's great to support animals. But let's not
forget our human animal friends in need. Pete's situation is exactly
the kind of fundraising event that makes perfect sense to support.
Pete is a kind, hard working local who was at the wrong place at the
wrong time. He needs our help,.....please support the fund raiser on
Sunday! You will feel good helping a fellow human animal you can
actually talk to!

businesses for an after release party. Everybody who lives here
knows the people who party here on Big Pine may not have food or a
real place to live but they always have plenty of money for
partying. Let's keep the fundraising for those who really need it.
We are starting to use the idea of fundraising the wrong way. We
have to make sure we don't become too used to the idea of
fundraising where we become complacent to those who really need our
community's help, like Pete who has lived here for over 20 years
and who was beat to within inches of his life. His fundraiser is on
Sunday. Much better to attend that than a fundraiser for a business.

To the person saying the Explorers and Cadets are
little Nazi's? Where is your opinion coming from? Have you ever been
to one or their meetings? That is one of the most off the wall
statements I've ever read. The explorers and Cadets give the kids
something FREE and fun to do. Helps build self confidence (something
so many kids are lacking), teaches kids how to avoid harmful things
like peer pressure and drug influences, and how to defend themselves
against unwanted attention. It also teaches kids the benefits of
community service. You who makes that statement about the Explorer
program, are you one of the kids who couldn't cut it? What are you
angry about? Or are you one of Big Pine's finest "got Beer and nothing
else" population. How can anybody with even a semblance of brains
think that empowering our children with knowledge and self worth is a
bad thing. I wonder, Do you have children and where are they? Do you

I have a mother raccoon and her babies
living in my attic. We trapped the male and he's been
relocated. Recently the female chewed through hardware cloth (unbelieveable)
on the roof vent. Animal control says I have to capture the female
and the babies which is difficult given they only have one trap to
lend me. The babies are now about 10 inches long (for some reason
she had one out on the porch). Will the family move out on its own
eventually? I want them out so if anyone knows of a local pest
company that will do it please let me know. Thanks.

doctors, who've billed the govt. for patients they never had and
everyone with a hang nail or headache overburdening the system have
left it in a bit of a sorry state. Now you're put on a waiting list
for surgery unless it's life threatening...right this minute. I had a
friend who had to wait 5 months for a triple bypass and kept herself
alive on Nitro pills. It does beat the fact that she'd either die in
the street here or have to sign her house over to the gov't. for the
privilege of them saving her life. So yes something would be better
than nothing. |

It's a sad day when the community comes together to support a
fundraiser that helps a really bad restaurant like Montego Bay. The
food was lousy. Even some Rotary members that met for their weekly
meeting, didn't eat the food. Why didn't anyone have a fundraiser
for the people that worked at Monte's when they lost all their jobs
because the owner had no loyalty to them after many years of
service? Why didn't those same people who supported the fund-raiser
for Montego Bay, show up and help the people who lost their HOMES
(they lost family pictures, clothes, toys personal affects and a
place to sleep) and donate to their cause? Those people lost more
than poor old Ed!!

officers are trying to do work at their own places or county buildings
without benefit of permitting and then busting others for doing the

I have lived here for over 2 years now.
I have not had any problems with any county workers. From code
enforcement (nancy dowling) to the county sheriff who helped when my
wife was in an accident,...they were top notch. Courteous and
helpful. I bought a house with lower enclosure issues. Nancy Dowling
is being just great with helping me get it in compliance. And guess
what that DIDN'T require a payoff, just a little respect for the
RULES!!!!

complaints about Big Pine could easily find another place to live and
then all of us that live here actually enjoying all that life on Big

world found Big Pine. It sure would be a whole lot quieter. My kids
were born here. My son actually can find something to do every day
that doesn't include drugs or alcohol. He dives every day that the
weather allows. I am always amazed how many people live here that
don't like the ocean or hot weather. WHY ARE YOU HERE? This is an
amazing place. We have nature here like no where else in the USA. We
have clean air. cleaner water than anywhere else along the shoreline.
We have always had a live and let live attitude here. and it should
remain so for many years to come. Remember, isn't that why so many of
you moved here? Yes we have characters here also. But all great places
have lot's of local color. It's all part of the glory of Big Pine Key.

The sun wind block Karen cited was on the legal tiki behind the Moose
Lodge - it was wooden lattice nailed on the up rights on the south and
west sides. The 2 that the county did are at Blue Heron park on
Litton's way. They put chain link fenceing around the bottom of the
main building and around an auxillary tiki that sits near the main
building. The Moose was cited because the lattice could collect debris
during a storm if water got that high, how ever the wooden lattice
would have broken away before holding much debris. The chain link the
county used will collect the same debris but would never break away,
the buildings would come down first. The county installed the chain
link with out a permit, they need a permit the same as the rest of us. |

get around this like everything else. If you have a good relationship
with the neighbors, they will tolerate most anything. My house is
never empty, either with renters or friends staying. However I have
rules, as in no music after certain hours, no children, and no more

If anyone wants to make a soup base, or what is
otherwise called "stock" do this: sautee chopped celery, carrot and
onion in real butter; this is the magic French "mirepoix". Do not
brown! Here are seasoning combos because space here is limited: garlic
is universal. with chicken use thyme and a little bay. With seafood
use garlic, thyme, and pinches of oregano and basil. Beef, use pinch
thyme, mostly S & P. "Badia" seasonal is great in all. Do not use
cilantro!! Use the cooked or broiled bones of beef or chicken, but
fish is different. After the mirepoix has sauteed, add the cooked beef
or chicken bones, cover with water, season and simmer. The
longer it cooks, the more it reduces (less liquid). If you reduce this
long enough, the liquid is called a "glace" after it is strained.
Seafood is a different story and for pointers tune in next week if

Why are the residents on Big pine Key
complaining about Walgreens Drug Store for opening a store on your
Island? Why don't you direct your frustrations at the BOCC, the
people you voted for to represent you? The BOCC is a Communist
Dictator Government that can do anything they want too. If they can
put everybody's life on hold for years at a time and control every
aspect of your life, then they could have stop Walgreens. I say this
in the nicest way it can be said.

Yes it's true that if no money has exchanged hands it's not for hire
BUT it's up to you to go to court and prove it. She can give
you a citation on anything she wants and you're not innocent until
proven guilty, rather guilty until proven innocent. Code enforcement

Here's one for you!!! It's now illegal to mow anyone else's yard
without an occupational license!!!! That's right, you can now be fined
for working without a license if you go next door to help the elderly
neighbor or you send your kids out to earn a few bucks. Karen Bass
made someone stop work and put away the lawn mower, while helping a
neighbor clean the yard, under penalty of a big fine...what's next
firing squad? This has gone toooooooo far folks! |

My neighbor and I both have been calling Mosquito Control to spray our
remote area to no avail. I guess there has to be a lot of calls before
they do anything, but there are only two homes in this area. i wish
this was an election year so we could get some response. |

Why do we need another park.
All you "Locals" that want to fill the Basin in at the Old "Vista
Linda" Motel... Why a Park why not make affordable housing for these
people that have grown up here trying to make a living being a
service to all these Rich people from up north. Put a fence up
around the basin and have these people somewhere to live that they
can afford.But make sure these people honestly have jobs and not
welfare housing. As I see in the Barometer tonight an ad for
affordable housing on Summerland at $345,000. PLeeeaaase what's up
with that? Leave the word affordable out. It really looks stupid.

belong to her... state, county, ROGO land- WHATEVER.
The fellow didnt want to do it... but
was terrified that she would attack him and his home if he did not
